hubblehubble drums” long playing record

  • nude ghost (10:33)
  • hubble's hubble (10:40)

  • glass napkin (20:18)
november 2011 release ; ... after fawning all over mr. greenberg’s recent nna tape, it’s nice to hear a more mass-market / fleshed-out version of his particular strain of repetitive / minimalism-inspired solo electric guitar music (a genre not often spoken about in excited tones around these parts) across three extended takes, notable for featuring, you know, actual live-played repetitive guitar patternage (as opposed to sample-accurate 1:1 digital cloning of said ; this makes all the difference) ...

dude can shred, no doubt, but i’m way more impressed by his ability to keep the propulsive / motorik chug while throwing just the subtlest theme / variation wrenches into the flowing mechanic ... ultra impressive.

artist: hubble
title: hubble drums
catalog number: ns 015
format: lp

street datenovember 8th, 2011

planned since hubble’s first live performance in september of 2010, hubble drums is an inspired record of new guitar music. equal parts shred-fi, cyber-dread and fried psychedelia, hubble drums marks ben greenberg (of zs and pygmy shrews) ’s first full-length recording and debut for northern spy.  recorded at python patrol and lovingly mastered at bonati mastering, the cd and 150g lp features original artwork by michael yaniro and ben greenberg.

hubble’s hubble” serves as the soundtrack for a video of nasa sanctioned cosmic imagery captured by the actual hubble telescope. possibly the most minimal track, ben produces sheets of sound that circle through 3 channels, panning left to center to right, creating an aural environment that reflects the space and movement of deep space.  “nude ghost” is based off the first tapping riff that ben wrote when creating music for solo guitar. the glacially emerging beat mixed into the track came from two days of hazed studio jamming with joe williams (white williams), jon leland (janka nabay, skeletons) and matt papich (ecstatic sunshine). ”glass napkin” highlights ben’s mastery of both guitar tone and hypnotic rhythmic patterns, as well as his energetic patience in the face of a void of his own devising.

artist: neptune
title: silent partner
catalog number: ns 013
format: lp

street date: october 11th, 2011

there’s probably not much to say about punk’s continued existence. like jazz or sitcoms or party politics, it just carries on eating and breathing and shitting and propogating. it’s only interesting when someone comes along trying to advance the form. like “arrested development” or dennis kucinich, they’re usually forgotten.

this would all be relevant if neptune were a punk band, which we’re not at all sure is the case. they create a sense of undermining the status quo, which is pretty punk, but then they screw things up by undermining the punk status quo. they’re not really a guitar band, although they do play guitars of a sort, handcrafted by boston sculptor and founder jason sidney sanford. but they’ve also covered the go go’s, which isn’t punk, not really.

recorded at machines with magnets, the same studio employed by battles, the psychic paramount, and the skull defekts, “silent partner” pushes neptune up to two dozen releases over 15 years, and finds them continuing to push their electrified, rhythmic sound while staying true to what has always made them evocative. they’re too musical to be a noise band, and yet the noises they make are never quite recognizable. having lost drummer daniel paul boucher in 2009, sanford and mark william pearson made the counter-intuitive decision to focus on making an album heavy on drums. with kevin emil micka (animal hospital) and farhad alexander ebrahimi (big bear), they envisioned a new sort of drum thing for neptune and devised a new arsenal of instruments – not least of which is a feedback machine devised out of a prototyped yoga ball. there’s also amplified bicycle spokes and drum-triggered oscillators.

and yet, it’s a tightly controlled sonic environment. the eight-minutecash mattress” might be a display of sonic creation, but when they come around to the simple rock of “canine spaces” the sound is familiar, even if the sounds comprising it aren’t. neptune is not dealing in willful avant-gardism. they are creating out of necessity. they’re crafting new rock where the old one won’t do. excitement’s at play.

featured artists:
jason sidney sanford: vocals, low-end guitar, railroad spike, bicycle crank arm, spoke protectors, spring, whistle, electronic noise generator, aluminum bowls and plates
mark william pearson: oscillator organ, baritone guitar, amplified toms, drums, percussion, suitcase, aluminum bowls and plates
kevin emil micka: drums, percussion, drum-triggered electronics, vocals, oscillators, radio, aluminum bowls and plates
farhad alexander ebrahimi: drums, amplified drums, percussion, amplified bell, voltage-controlled oscillators, vocals, triggered electonics, feedback membrane, aluminum discs and bowls

northern spy press release...

artist: haunted house
title: blue ghost blues
catalog number: ns 012
format: lp

street dateseptember 13th, 2011

the blues has grown up a lot in the last ten years, since guitarist andrew burnes left new york for georgia, bringing a de facto end to the powerful abstract blues of haunted house. in the time since, a new generation — sometimes referred to as freak folk or new weird america and spearheaded by tom carter*, jack rose and ben chasny — has followed in the footsteps of loren connors, john fahey and a handful of others who have long maintained that the blues is something more than 12 bars and a backbeat.

after the demise of haunted house, connors continued preaching the gospel, often with his wife — the enigmatic singer suzanne langille — to anyone who would listen, playing a slow, distorted, reverb-drenched blues as slowly the world began to come around. then, in the summer of 2010, the stars aligned just so: burnes was in town for a few days, percussionist neel murgai was available, and the brooklyn’s issue project room was booking matinee concerts in their courtyard. the band had only existed for a brief two years and had been absent for a decade, but they picked up right where they left off with only a brief soundcheck as rehearsal. another matter of months, and they were in the studio, recording at long last the follow-up to their 1999 erstwhile release up in flames.

looking back, maybe it isn’t that the blues has grown up. maybe it has reverted to its youth. after all, john lee hooker, son house and mississippi fred mcdowell weren’t beholden to any 12-bar fixity. nor was lonnie johnson, whose song “haunted house” gave the band its name. they all played it how they felt it. it wasn’t until the 1960s and the british blues revival (its champion, ironically perhaps, being connors’ beloved eric clapton) that the blues was codified into its current formula.

haunted house is an unusual band. with indian hand percussion and no bass, they don’t look like a blues band — and maybe they’re not. but they play it how they feel it. what more could you ask for?

artist: dan melchior und das menace
title: catbirds & cardinals
catalog number: ns 011
format: lp

street dateseptember 13th, 2011

catbirds and cardinals is the latest psychedelic album lobbed in to new world shores from dan melchior und das menace. coming down slow with a clear vision, it’s a sure hit. since the late 90s, shepperton, england native dan melchior has consistently delivered an avant-pop that is off-kilter and literate, with a sense of menace and a stronger sense of play. he’s a new jesus of cool, riding just about the underground like the antipodean chris knox. the sound of catbirds and cardinals is clean, lo-fi, deeply-engaging, and guaranteed to pull in new legions of fans. it’s a clever garage pop set that will lick your pate clean.

on catbirds and cardinals, dan melchior und das menace successfully meld a hodge podge of disparate elements into a cohesive whole, bringing to mind veteran uk and us underground bands like the swell maps, andrew klimek, chrome and alternative television more than they do old blues men or the tweedy garage rock conservatives of dan’s past.

catbirds and cardinals is probably the most overtly ‘poppydas menace release, with songs like ‘poison pete’s holiday’ and ‘english shame’ lodging in the cranium like carpet warehouse jingles. the recordings retain the overdriven quality melchior is known for but push the envelope sonically into some unexpected places, with the dream like synths of ‘crow radio number 1 showing a marked departure from the overall guitar grime.

northern spy press release...

artists: angels in america / weyes blood
title: split cassette
catalog number: nscs 010
format: cassette

chronicling the baltimore underground lo-fi groups angels in america (moppy pont and merv glisten) and weyes blood (natalie mering), this limited edition split cassette reaches for the depths of melancholy angst and is sure to mesmerize even the thickest skinned audiophile.

the haunting voices of angels echo along atmospheric landscapes while enthralling the listener with a sense of karmic doom and heroin-like bliss. on the flip side awaits the psychedelic neo-folk sounds of weyes blood, a throw back to what was once the sound of the drop-out revolution, now ringing like a bell of a new unsatisfied generation.

this split release will be limited to 100 chrome cassettes featuring original artwork by merv and moppy.

bird namesmetabolism: a salute to the energy of the sun

lplimited to 1000 copies
high quality virgin colored vinyl • pro printed jackets

the latest release by the fringe pop outfit bird names is another bright star in their galaxy of offerings.  the album, metabolism: a salute to the energy of the sun, was created meticulously over the course of many moons and spiritual awakenings in sunny chicago, il.  the band is a duo, of sorts, comprised of phelan lavelle & david lineal, though a cast of good souls have helped them along their travels. recently making athens, ga their home, they explore a pop sound that touches as much on the naïve as it does the borders of avant-experimentation. their new album, mastered by griffin rodriguez (icy demons, beirut, band of horses), is a lo-fi, boundary-pushing, pop experiment in the vein of the beach boyssmile. it is a fully-realized reflection on the sun and the fount of organic energy, or human energies, as the speech of the sun.

bird namesmetabolism: a salute to the energy of the sun

cd • 4 panel digipak

the latest release by the fringe pop outfit bird names is another bright star in their galaxy of offerings.  the album, metabolism: a salute to the energy of the sun, was created meticulously over the course of many moons and spiritual awakenings in sunny chicago, il.  the band is a duo, of sorts, comprised of phelan lavelle & david lineal, though a cast of good souls have helped them along their travels. recently making athens, ga their home, they explore a pop sound that touches as much on the naïve as it does the borders of avant-experimentation. their new album, mastered by griffin rodriguez (icy demons, beirut, band of horses), is a lo-fi, boundary-pushing, pop experiment in the vein of the beach boyssmile. it is a fully-realized reflection on the sun and the fount of organic energy, or human energies, as the speech of the sun.

in the tradition of long strange trips across wide open spaces, the colin l. orchestra arrived at the offices of northern-spy records via colin langenus previous project, usaisamonster. he’s exchanged his previous duo for a full-scale rock orchestra of his bestest buds on multiple guitars, drums, violins, keyboards. their first project, infinite ease / good god, is full-scale indeed, available as a double-cd or a deluxe fully re-mastered for vinyl version of infinite ease. though three years in the making, they flow as smoothly as an inner tube on a lazy stream on a summers afternoon. three years setting schemes and arranging sleeping dreams have culminated in two lush, flowing albums full of anthems and wee small moments. from the supple bass line that opens, you need sleep, to crunches of guitar shred melting into velvet strings on their way to a country ditty that would do graham parsons proud. here is a double-pleasure that re-envisions the jam band and, at the same time, indie rock, meshing together minimalistic repetitive jams, bright melodies, and loose, easy-going vocals all in the sole service of aiding your bliss.

sounds like rhys chatham jamming with the meat puppets.

oddly, what i’m reminded of the most are charlie nothing’s spacious side-long extrapolations, albeit a&a’ed here by tons & processing (mostly harmonizer & tape / looping) & rhyswoozy, lip / tongue heavy embouchures ...

neat stuff, nice to hear a full albumsworth of this side of rhys musical personality, which has lain dormant since the late 90’s (when he dropped a 12” of similar works for ... ninja tune i believe) ...

rhys chathamoutdoor spell

lp • limited to 1000 copies
high quality virgin vinyl • pro printed jackets

rhys chatham: voice, trumpet
beatriz rojas: cajón (on ‘corn maiden’s rite’)
jean-marc montera: electric guitar (on ‘the magician’)
kevin shea: drums (on ‘the magician’)

rhys chatham has trail-blazed a course through late 20th century music, equally aplomb in post-minimalist composition as he is in punk. not since roebling laid his span across the east river has there been an artist who builds bridges in both how we hear music and how we can appreciate art. his latest album, outdoor spell, is a further document in that direction. here has has eschewed 100 guitars, or even himself playing a single guitar, for the trumpet and voice, both electrified and dry. it is an earthquake island for the 21st century, tugging at the corners of new ideas, taking in forms endemic to a shared imagination and renewing the beauty there.

jooklo duothe warrior” seven inch single record

  • primitive power (4:23)

  • fire liberation (5:26)
november 2010 release ; now that’s what i’m talking about ... after being whispered about in the most hallowed of halls, the duo of virginia genta (whose recent rooftop duo set w/ chris corsano on 8mm was an out-and-out slayer) & david vanzan finally get a “mass-market” edition ...

hot on the heels of gigs w/ sabu toyozumi & sonny simmons ... and a week-long run at the barbican in london (where they performed musical accompaniment to merce cunningham’s final piece, alongside takehisa kosugi, john paul jones [!?], and sonic youth) comes this devastating blast, equal parts ayler-lineage “fire music” and borbetomagus-styled carpet-bombing that’s as powerfully psychedelic as it gets ...

comes in nice screen-printed sleeve (c/o eli keszler’s rel studio) on some bonded stock, with a b/w insert ... one of the singles of the year afa my own sensibilities are concerned ; highly recommended !!!

not since albert ayler stalked the hamnar of stockholm and reverberated his fire music off the walls of les tenements has there been an avant-garde jazz saxophonist who can all out wail like virginia genta can. don’t let her calm presence fool you. nor should david vanzan’s taller stature lead to believe this is not an equal opportunity free jazz freak-out. from when their poles first were converged by the cosmic force in 1999, italy’s (with finnish godparents) jooklo duo has been winning hearts and brains worldwide through jaw-dropping performances and a series of limited edition releases keeping at bay ravenous fans only long enough to get to the next gig. now, for their first u.s. release, northern-spy records launches its own assault on an as yet unsuspecting public with the 7, the warrior.

recorded october 11th, 2010, at troglosound home studio, it’s as compact and complex as a leather-bound book of esoterica ready to haul you off to the most hidden lands of universal energy.

to have walked into k dorm at the lefty college out in olympia, wa in 1995 was to experience an immediate assault on the senses. the slap of the stench of dancers writhing: hippies and scenesters, post-nirvana poster-childs and riot grrls. and there was a good chance that at the far end of the floor bowing under the weight of bodies, the sons of uterus and fire, old time relijun, were in charismatic glory.

their first recorded output, songbook vol. i, long out of print, is brought to revival by brooklyn’s newest indie imprint, northern-spy records. over the course of 7 albums, frontman arrington de dionyso (malaikat dan singa) and upright bassist aaron hartman (girls in trouble) have established an indie rock avant-garde with elements of the naive, the spiritual, international folk sounds and shake your ass funkiness. yet, nothing since has ever captured the rawness, the train wrecks and crocodile piss recorded by diana arens at dub narcotic back in those early days.

mastered for the first time, northern-spy presents this cd digipak release, a classic from its artist, arrington de dionyso. also, for you 7" aficionados, 4 little gems from the album -- sabertooth tiger, mirror, and the 4-track versions of baby dragon and lion tamer -- are a little crown for you to own on their own. the tent’s going up, the bibles are being passed around, it’ll all burn down before the end of the night. don’t miss out.

overview
it’s been a long journey for northern-spy artist colin langenus and tom hohmann, like floating stoned on the back of the turtle that carries the world. or primal scream therapy. that trip culminates with r.i.p., the group’s final release, and the first of brooklyn’s newest indie label. a swan song of a group at the top of its form, flowing with ease through psychedelia, stoner rock, prog, native american mythos, and even political disintegration.
r.i.p. was mixed by sludge-riff wunderkind, max hodes and features local nyc luminaries such as jeremy danneman (parade of one) and matt mottel (talibam!). graced by tom hohmann’s original cover art and pressed both on high quality vinyl and cd digipack, it will be a small treasure to carry forward for both the band’s fans and those just discovering this fascinating group as they embark on their next journeys.
