selected passagesduring the winter of 2008, i stayed on the campus of a small college in vermont where i had previously recorded the material for a piece titled “intervals”.

when i first arrived i made recordings of a small radio which was in my room, i would listen to that radio throughout my stay and captured many different sounds from it. i also spent quite a bit of time both indoors and out recording the environments, and made recordings playing some of the pianos which are in various rooms and buildings on the campus.

i returned to my studio with these materials and after experimenting with various approaches to the recordings i ultimately chose only to work with the piano parts. to me these recordings, while only capturing the sounds of the piano and the room it was in, seem to speak about winter and quiet just as well as the sounds of wind and ravens, hushed voices, footsteps in the snow, weather reports, local djs and poor reception.

in the faint shadows cast by the last light before twilight, i like to roam unthinkingly through what the city becomes (…) as my feet wander i inwardly skim, without reading, a book of text interspersed with swift images, from which i leisurely form an idea that's never completed.

set.grey

the “set” series is a study in generative soundscaping, with an emphasis on reduction and elimination of unneccessary material. the pieces here reflect an aesthetic that jettisons any contextual framework readily perceivable as music, eliminating established references such as layering, blending etc, using purely generative and iterative methodologies to activate audible structures that the artist presents as “sonic sculpture”, or “audible architecture(archisonics).

this is the second part of an ongoing investigation series that began with “set.neutral (white_line, uk), and will end with set.noir (tba).

special thanks to heri at nvo for giving these exploratory works a home, also to mike at smallfish for love and support, maura for love, shinkei and turra without whom… yann novak, and all white_line supporters distributors and collaborators… you know who you are.

unter den linden
the “grundton” of this 30-minute composition is the recording of the concert given at snd studios sheffield (uk) in march 2009, entitled “why is there something rather than nothing?” by mark fell and powered with d&b speakers by tony myatt (mrc, university of york). the sounds of planes have been recorded in mallorca (spain) in 1987, and in pilat (france) in 2009. this music comes after hcdc, composed in november 2008 after the death of daniel charles – his last days were darkened by breathing difficulties, hence the overall presence of the “wind”. the last five minutes were composed in 1987 with telephone bells, a silo and a spanish garbage truck, under the name “unter den linden”. the piece is not related with berlin, but with jules massenet’s “sous les tilleuls(from “scenes alsaciennes” where bells are heard in a distance and thus modified by the wind), and evokes a peaceful atmosphere just before the bombs begin to fall.

christophe charles, september 2009

und transit

the conceptual framework of “und transit” was conceived while taking part in a 3 months artist residency in krems, austria (2008/09). while in transit (daily walks) to my studio, i was inspired by a particular passageway in minoritenplatz.

like most passageways, which are a means to an end – and are rarely treated as an end in itself – i was immediately struck by the loneliness and practicality of this space as well as the capacity of the users to ignore it on a daily basis. during the course of my residency i collected a number of field recordings in and around krems, in order to create a series of soundscapes based on minoritenplatz’s sound of emptiness through the means of a quadraphonic installation.

these compositions represent some of the pieces composed for “und transit”.

tim uses several boxes of speakers and seijiro uses a snare drum as a resonance box, with microphones. they put boxes for their music in another box = the space.

they create different levels of universe within the space. from micro to macro. always with one clear intention: to improvise listening and to organize sonic space together in a very delicate way.

as my previous work this work is also an intense examination of one specific instrument. with the album trac_[k]t i was trying to define my musical boundaries on the „hackbrett“.

in this work i am approaching the analogue synthesizer yamaha cs-40m. i built up the research in a journalistic kind of way. at first i made a plan of procedures, gave myself a problem formulation. in my first step i was looking for sounds that represent the „soul“ of this instrument. the next step was abstracting these sounds without losing the specific character of the instrument. an unconventional click sound was the result. this sound was then fed with additional information, field recordings, that supported that original sound and put it into new and different contexts. the third step was the analysis of the total information. i tried to maintain a basic sound character in all three tracks and also put it into form by overlapping the basic sound with field recordings and, despite my strong conceptual approach, let arise a musical structure that connects three tracks.

untitled (angle.1) is a stereo composition based on the eight-channel installation untitled.

first exhibited february 11 – march 13, 2009 at the art gallery of the university of maryland (usa), untitled is the unique first collaborative project between visual artist linn meyers and sound artist richard chartier, in an installation where optical and sonic patterns intersect. with an architectural transformation of the space, two fifteen foot long by eight foot high walls meet in an enfolding chevron, creating both a sound chamber and a drawing surface. the swirling pale lines and implied forms of meyers’ delicate ink drawing, made directly on the surface of the walls, fuse together with the sound piece by chartier, juxtaposing the organic and the digital into unified sensorial space. with eight audio transducers applied directly to the back surface of the walls, chartier’s stark composition modulates and transfers through the surfaces, echoing the seeping ink and visually vibrating and reverberating patterns. the extended separated audio channels loop in and out of sync over an eight hour period creating new sonic variations.

by the end of the 80s i produced my first vinyl release, “freebasing a for is me”. an album completely free of any preconception, built as an abstract expressionist soundsculpture. most of the releases after freebasing have been based on certain material or a working method or structural principles.

sometimes because i needed to contain myself within certain boundaries but most times because i had a certain subject of research in mind (like mono/stereo, or white noise, or the abstraction of human speech).

with this collection of compositions i return to the emptiness of “freebasing”.

every composition is just what it is. there are no thoughts other than their sonic relations within the construction. i travel from a hospital ward directly into the intestines of a harmonium. from a street with cafés into a busy railroad, into a lighter into, … et cetera. after the endless process of zooming in and out to get every sound in place i gave a lot of time to the production of this disc. new software (reaper) has given me better and more precise tools for getting the exact sound that i wanted.

about the track titles. i have always been intrigued by language, words and meaning. several of my seminal works are based on the human voice and on language. tom phillips is a british artist working a lot with letters, words and typography. one work particularly intrigued me. during the 70s mr. phillips worked on a book in which he reworked existing pages of books. by painting or drawing over the text he erased most of it but left certain word combinations intact. that way “poems” were created. while composing these constructions i learned about mr. phillips‘s work and felt a connection. i too cut parts out of a large “page”. that part of a much longer recording is set into a new context but still conveys the meaning it had inside the original context. that’s how i came to choose the text bits of one of these “humuments(no. 6 from the 1st edition) and use them as the titles for the tracks.

this music began as a collaboration between heribert friedl and me in spring 2006. we started with some hackbrett improvisations by heribert. i processed parts of these and added my own sounds. over time, as we sent files to and fro, it became clear that the two strands of sound – heribert's acoustic and mine electronic – weren't working together. so heribert's music was absorbed into my own. the hackbrett and the pace and shape of heribert's improvisations have left their mark on these pieces. however, this seed material has become something else.

ignaz schick & dawid szczesny met for the first time in 2005 when dawid was performing with sofie loizou in berlin. coming both from quite different backgrounds (hip hop / electronica and noise / experimental electro-acoustics) they decided to collaborate on some recordings.

the first session took place “live on radio” without previous rehearsals the first night of ignaz’ three weeks residency at radio copernicus in wroclaw in december 2005. the next very early morning they went into the recording studio and worked on the first tracks.

in early 2006 they did a short minitour with 3 concerts in germany and in the summer recorded more material at dawids house in wroclaw. in all tracks you can notice a certain jazzy feel, maybe coming from their shared passion for 1960s “jazz noir”.

in the mid-1980’s, rites of spring emerged from the thriving music community that was centered around dischord records in washington dc. their sound was raw, dense and emotional. it provided a soundtrack to a generation of veteran punks for whom introspection and renewal were increasingly necessary tools in the ongoing (re)construction of personal and political defiance.

drink_deep marks an effort to bridge the two distinct but inter-related milieus of the 80’s dischord era and the more recent practice of electronic minimalism, or microsound, both of which have relied upon aesthetic innovation and a modus operandi that is at once individualized and collaborative. aside from a piano that simulates a particular chord progression, all of the source material comes from the original r.o.s. tracks whose titles i have had the privilege of retaining.

as a whole, these compositions are, most importantly, an expression of the admonition to savor the depths of what life has to offer in the immediate moment, to embrace the paradoxical hazard of living gracefully and deliberately. herein lies, i would suggest, the continuing relevance of the original music, my interpretations of which are offered out of an enduring inspiration.

is methodically based upon a technique invented by the surrealists entitled «exquisite corpse». a method by which a collection of words, images or sounds are assembled collectively in sequence, either by following a rule or by delivering and making visible the «ending» of what has been created previously. this procedure has a resemblance to an old parlor game entitled «consequences», in which the players write alternately on a sheet of paper, fold it to conceal part of what they wrote and pass it on for further contribution.

based on this process a series of compositions by schurer > steinbrüchel was presented in september 2006 as an eight channel surround soundinstallation at the kunsthaus zurich, accompanied by a four channel visual contribution by yves netzhammer. the version on this cd documents a condensed, slightly more composed and therefore differentiated form of folding.

«man kann (...) die teilung des kontinuums nicht mit der des sandes in körner vergleichen, sondern mit in falten gelegtem papier oder stoff, so daß es unendlich viele falten geben könnte, die einen kleiner als die anderen, ohne daß sich der körper jemals in punkte oder minima auflöste.»

the title intrinsic motion emphasizes the movement connecting these four aural compositions, which also share similar interests and aesthetic negotiations. each work emerged from the combinations of various sound sources such as field recordings, found sound appropriations, contact microphone play, feedback, and studio processing. the works in this release explore the communicational diversity of surrounding sound fields, time, pitch, physical acoustics, and the sensory encounter that conveys human experience. each piece is the outcome of an empirical interaction, and a significant response to the material found within the intermittent activity of listening.

the product of a definite convergence of ideas as well as my own nascent french, the title á travers le bord can be interpreted as both a ‘crossing through’ a material edge or border and a liminal move from exterior to interior, or vice versa, in terms of, for example, flesh, or more generally, selfhood. a happy accident. though i would never presume to attribute any central meaning to music, such border crossings are a constant in my life and most likely inform my composition process as it unfolds in front of the laptop, moving or being still, listening, inside or out. it’s a delightful paradox, the ongoing flux that finds its faithful correlate in the pull towards a relative silence and calm. also delightful was my good friend and collaborator dean king’s willingness to contribute sound material for this piece, in addition to a much needed critical ear. after a few limited edition cd-r releases as eto ami, we were due a joint project. many of these sounds i processed further and set about composing – a long and sometimes arduous course that prompted its own numerous excursions through borders. most importantly, however, i was reminded of the pleasures of camaraderie, even at a distance.

the most striking characteristic of trans~ is the use of a field recording of a group of three small power transformers i conceived as a kind of improvised piece, changing microphone positions to cull different sounds and overtone spectra from the transformers' intense hum. the field recording became our basis track for trans~, and is exceptionally well and seamlessly embedded in the piece.

heribert plays his amplified hackbrett (cymbalon or hammered dulcimer), i play my electric cellotar, a self-made bamboo flute, and three harmonicas (two vintage hohner bluesharps bought in the 70's and a hopf 'golden hit'). unlike on ataraxia, the flute took the back seat this time because the harmonicas' overtone spectrum blended so well with that of the transformers, and helped creating the harmonic richness of the piece.

when asked to describe the piece, the first expression that came to my mind was 'music like weather' – a series of changes and transformations, a myriad of details that unfold according to their own intrinsic logic, but to no intended purpose, and invite the listener to follow their constant becoming and vanishing.

this cd contains tracks that are based on works for specific spatial and temporal conditions. sound installations are very different from compositions for cd, because circumstances differ widely from one situation to the other. in general, my approach to sound installations is more conceptual and systematic than my approach to sound works for cd. the spaces and events involved demand a more specific response to composing than the loudspeakers in my studio and living room. sound installations are often multi-channel pieces, designed to fit in a certain space (in most cases an exhibition space in which they have to coexistwith other works of art) whereas works for cd are composed for regular use in a regular situation (in most cases most likely the living room). to turn sound installation pieces into something more regular is not an easy task and i have been pondering about this for some time. in the end i decided to just give it a try and with careful editing i was able to come up with a satisfactory translation. the result is this cd: it gives an overview of some of the installations i have done in the last eight years. some tracks are basically the same as the installation, others have been transformed into works that fit better the medium it is presented on.
