the one ensemble orchestraother thunders” compact disc

  • the beam (4:01)
  • the beacon (4:59)
  • the syntax (3:43)
  • the vapour (6:39)
  • the instructions (4:11)
  • the sun (3:49)
  • the dig (2:00)
  • the words (3:37)
february 2009 release ; first release from this new “orchestral” configuration of daniel padden’s one ensemble ...

the range on display here is much wider than the typical gypsy / folk-aligned forms on prior one ensemble output ; the beefed-up instrumentation lends an almost dmitri tiomkin-ian flair (listen to the sound-sample) with the massed choir & strings resonating strongly with each other as the band runs through takes ranging from minimal, gestural improv(s) to full-band drones and lurching, sea-shanty lineage ditties ... awesome.

the one ensemble orchestra – ‘other thunders’ cd

daniel padden’s the one ensemble began as a solo project and quickly morphed into a quartet with the recruitment of chris hladowski and aby vulliamy of nalle, and peter nicholson. with padden’s leadership, they developed a curious and strident brew of eastern european folk, chamber music and some kind of earthy psychedelic primitivism. their approach is given the blaze of full technicolour glory as they expand to a septet, exacerbating their collision of the formal and the tribal and oftentimes recalling the soundtrack and mood of jodorowsky's the holy mountain.

derek bailey / tony bevan / paul hession / otomo yoshihidegood cop bad cop” compact disc

  • no hiding place / softly softly (18:10)
  • morse (16:35)
  • the bill (6:47)
  • good cop bad cop (9:47)
  • flying squad (19:59)
february 2009 release ; essential set of free-improv from the one-off quartet of derek bailey, otomo yoshihide, paul hession, and tony bevan, recorded back in 2003 ...

oddly, while otomo’s presence is not as easy to single out, derek and paul hession are pretty much on fire for the greater duration, lighting off one round after another of tense interplay, with bevan bringing a raspy “fire-music” lineage energy to the proceedings ... highly recommended !!!

mouthus / yellow swanslive on conan island” long playing record

  • duke (13:47)

  • asheville (8:48)
  • chapel hill (8:44)
... volume one of the “conan island” sessions (bet you were wondering about the whole “volume 2” bit on the weird forest lp) jointly pulled from the warm north carolina night air back in autumn, 2006 by the mouthus & yellow swans duos ...

record delivers on a bunch of different fronts ; mouthus’ low-end zombie-percussion flare-outs thrill throughout, yellow swansring-modulated everything & guitar wash blaze a clean path through the middle of the frequency-spectrum (i’m thinking with a urei 565t one might be able to extract two separate mouthus/ys duo records out of the cleaner-than-average sounding murk herein) ... just killer.

mouthus & yellow swans
live on conan island” lp
vinyl album ~ label: no-fi ~ cat no: neu010 ~ released march 2008
limited to 500 copies

the ultimate east coast/west coast soundclash as oregon’s yellow swans and brooklyn’s mouthus present a smouldering document from their onstage interactions on their fall 2006 us tour.

the sound of mouthus’s splat & clatter percussion and sheets of severely altered guitar and voice noise paired with yellow swans’ raucous axe-mangling and sublime noise processing make for a gargantuan oil tanker of sound that can’t avoid enveloping the listener.

live on conan island’ is a range of monstrous caverns of free electro skronk, alt-percussion and wailing guitars from live collaboration between two of load's hottest noisemongers. gigantic !

with razor sharp black-on-white artwork by gms of yellow swans.

april 2008 release ; a lovely set of traditional folk idioms by cath & phil tyler ; cath’s expertise in weaving sacred-harp lineage melodies is evident throughout - phil’s clawhammer banjo & fingerstyle guitar are a joy to hear, and when the two get to singing in straight harmony there’s more than a bit of magic to be found ...

this one may be a bit outside of mms’ normal purview, but i’ll be honest with you, i’ve been listening to davey graham & shirley collins’ “folk roots, new routes” a bunch recently & i see this as a not-too-distant relative of that whole sound ...

cath & phil tyler
dumb supper” cd
cd album ~ label: no-fi ~ cat no:neu008 ~ release date: 11th feb 2008

=cath & phil have been stars of the north east underground scene for the last 3 years, sharing stages with six organs of admittance, papa m, charalambides and many more. cath is originally from new jersey, us and (as cath oss) was a long-time member of the renowned cordelia’s dad and io, and part of the shape singing quartet northampton harmony. cordelia’s dad had two of their albums produced by steve albini and shared stages with weezer, nirvana and others. phil is a well-known multi-instrumentalist on the newcastle scene, seasoned ceilidh player and core member of john peel indie scuzz favourites spraydog.

cath’s also a renowned teacher on the sacred harp singing circuit: sacred harp is vigorous community singing of a particular collection of four part harmony hymns (from the 19th century book the sacred harp) for fun and not usually for performance. its been described as 'like a cross between gregorian chanting and bluegrass' and elements of its stylings appear in the duos recordings.

cath and phil originally met some years ago when phil was helping arrange a uk tour for cordelia’s dad. they fell in love and married, cath relocating to newcastle, and they now make beautiful music together. literally !

cath & phil’s music beautifully blends the hard edged traditions of primitive americana and english folk, using guitar, banjo, fiddle and more, all topped with their searing vocals and sublime harmonies. their songs speak of grit, blood and guts, tenderness, love and death.

cath & phil believe in folk retaining its original storytelling function, passing on tales through the centuries. in their words: “these songs came to us by way of lena bourne fish, hattie hicks presnell, homer cornett, eleazar tillett & martha etheridge (anne & frank warner collection); the sacred harp….we changed some of the words and wrote some of the tunes.” all the songs on the album are adaptations of songs they’ve unearthed or have been passed onto them through family members, musical collaborators and their own love of the original information highway, folk music.

cath & phil tyler’s take on folk is a very welcome antidote to much of the current tide of fey/faux folk and acoustic whimsy, reinstating grit, virtuosity, authenticity and mesmeric, powerful performance to this timeless genre.

look out for cath & phil playing the voices across the world festival at the royal opera house, covent garden and supersonic festival in july, green man festival in august and other uk festivals over the summer.

jazkamer / mark durgansplit” seven inch single record

  • jazkamer - tonal protest (6:59)

  • mark durgan - the roots of beech trees wrapped in moss (5:51)
april 2008 release ; split single by jazkamer (the time-tested lasse marhaug / john hegre lineup here augmented by moha! / noxagt’s anders hana) & mark “putrefier” durgan ...

jazkamer’s side : a crispy room-recording of guitar/electronic banshee-wail - exactly what you love/expect from these guys ... but, for me at least, the real treat / surprise is mark durgan’s side : an almost musique-concrète study using cracked electronics, bird-sounds, and the kind of anti-music moves he undoubtedly picked up whilst collaborated with richarn “tnb” rupenus (aside from the lovely & o/p birthbiter lp, mark was one of the shadowy figures who fleshed out the tnb ranks @ atp a few years back ...)

this no-fi 7” series is one of the best things going @ the moment ... a bit on the pricey side, yes, but so worth it ...

jazkamer / mark durgan
split 7”
released by no-fi ~ cat no: neu006 ~ released march 2008
limited to 500 copies

another vital instalment in no-fi’s growing and collectable vinyl catalogue, this 7” sees the head-on collision of two major acts in the european noise circuit.

norway’s jazkamer is the electronics and guitar duo of lasse marhaug and john hegre, best known for their ‘metal machine music’ death metal concept album but also for the searing blasts of electricity that typify their more noise-oriented work. marhaug is a major figure in international noise, well-known for having more releases to his name than many people have in their collections. for this release, they also recruit fellow norwegian and multi-tasking guitar-mangling prodigy anders hana (noxagt, moha!) - as if they needed any help to kick out the jams on this jawdroppingly raucous live recording.

in contrast, the flip side features something significantly more serene from mark durgan (who you may also know as putrefier and who is rumoured to have been part of the mystery line-up of the new blockaders at thurston mooore’s all tomorrows parties). subsonic rumbles and birdsong dominate the surface of this track, but the devil’s in the detail – poke your attention through the thin surface ice and you’ll easily fall through to hidden depths.

this is another of no-fi’s trademark hand-stamped jukebox sleeve 7”s, with stunning centre label art by lasse marhaug.

great to look at, amazing to listen to !

sunburnedweekend at burnie’s” seven inch single record

  • smokescreen

  • the queen of midnight
  • jesus
may 2008 release ; a three-song (actually ; the second side descends into a series of short, weird vignettes that could right be called “songs”) bumper from the contemporary sunburned lineup, co-released by the newcastle-based promoter/label no-fi and the band’s own manhand ...

as always, the music is veiled in a mystery-void of plunderphonic/tape-sounds under which a series of “happening” bassline/drum riffs bubble ... glad to hear the band is back to both their instrumental origins (after a few all-electronic outings) & their one-mic practice-room fidelity following their (misguided if’n you ask me) dalliance w/ kieran “24-track” hebden - the fuzz dwelling between the spectral cracks is ultimately what makes this stuff so singular ...

if you’re a fan of the hand of the band, this is a nice short (actually, the b-side clocks in @ over 7 minutes) aside ; others - this is as great a toe-dipper as any ...

sunburned 7" finally released.
27 may, 2008

we're delighted to announce that we've finally taken delivery of the sunburned 7" 'weekend at burnies', and what a long strange trip it is! its another vital instalment in no-fi’s growing and collectable vinyl catalogue, this 7” sees massachussets’ freestyle kraut funketeers sunburned hand of the man condense their name and a whole album concept into 7” of vital vinyl.

side 1 is inhabited by the murderous bossa nova of ‘smokescreen’, with its loping bassline and trapped-in-a-box vocal paranoia. then flip over for 7 more unhinged instalments, through the found-sound and minimal psych of ‘the queen of midnight’, the faux cult frenzy of ‘jesus’, oddball sampledelia and a looseness that conjures a mental image of the band simultaneously lauding and ridiculing out-rock’s greatest clichés.

this is a slice of classic sunburned, with their trademark lo-fi stylings and added low-rent moondog-esque rhythm programmes giving it the air of a secretly recorded jam session at the manson ranch. or is it a spoof? or a spoof of a spoof? you never quite know…

this is another of no-fi’s trademark hand-stamped jukebox sleeve 7”s, with classic centre label art by sarah o’shea. there are only 500 copies and its gonna go quick, so get your orders in !

burning star corewsbc/sss” ten inch single record

  • white swords in a black castle (11:06)

  • sun starved skyscrapers (7:45)
  • to spread your dying flower one last time (3:21)
may 2007 release; the second in this series of 6 10” records reissuing c. spencer yeh’s prior cd-r & lim-run output. i know the price sucks; u.k. vinyl is never cheap... but then again spencer does more with 10-minute sides than most do with their 120-minute triple-lp ‘epics’ ...

this installment includes “white swords in a black castle” (colossal wave of distorted chordal activity done in collaboration with iovae and hair police & issued as part of a double cd-r set on dronedisco; reminiscient of pita’s “get out”), “sun staved skyscrapers” (looping free-jazz/psych overload with robert beatty, trevor tremaine, dana hamblen, and jeremy lesniak from a since 1972 tape), and “to spread your dying flower one last time” (three minutes of doom-drone; initally spencer’s half of a split w/mike shiflet on gameboy)

burning star coreamelia” ten inch single record

  • i wanna make a supersonic woman of you (6:06)
  • homing pigeon (4:46)

  • the point of departure is not to return (11:15)
first in a series of six ten inch single records reissuing classic burning star coresides” recorded between 1996 and 2005; some of which were on that double-disc set on cenotaph, a bunch of which are being released here for the first time...

the three pieces on this volume all use a similar sound-set; janked/circuit-bent electronics in pulse/seek/destroy mode, yielding some nice floating electronics puncutated by a regular rhythmic grid & a bit of tape/disc manipulation.

as with just about every emission from spencer’s cincinatti lair these days, this is killer stuff; one of my favorite artists working in contemporary sound...

november 2006 7” single - the second on the fledgling no-fi label (run by the folks what put on loads of amazing concerts in the newcastle uk area - thanks lee !!!) featuring vtb in full-on out mode - piloting an a-10 warthog right into the gates of the crystal castle...

volcano the bearbirth of streissand’ 7" neu001

second release from the new newcastle-based no-fidelity label, after the first recording from scene-legend sir richard bishop (of the sun city girls) sold out in a whistle. something a bit special. having built their career upon a reputation for incendiary live appearances and a heap of self-released cd-rs and cassettes, leicester’s volcano the bear have slowly been gathering steam, becoming one of this country’s most exciting experimental improv outfits.

this startling new 7” for no-fi showcases the group at their most abstract, the a-side a sinister brew of creaking violin and string plucks. it sounds something like no-neck blues band collaborating with wolf eyes on a re-take of the saragossa manuscript soundtrack. the b-side goes further down the path paved by olsen and co. with some metallic clanking and utterly gnarled noise eruptions.

  • space prophet dogon
  • esoterica of abyssnia
just fantastic - i’d been lamenting my oversight of this, the first release on the fledgeling no-fi label back in june 2006, as by the time i’d heard about it it was already unattainable... and in fact it is... ‘cept for the ‘rediscovery’ of some 100-odd copies at the pressing plant, ultimately leading to the scant few copies skimmed/put aside for mms.

again; this is long gone folks. rick bishop recorded live @ newcastle’s legendary morden tower (check yr 60s/70s poetry journals / 80s tnb discography) covering two chestnuts from the vast scg songbook. excellent stuff. yes; a tad on the pricey side, but better than no price at all...
