borbetomagusthe rape of atlanta” long playing record

  • archie keens for a moister veronica

  • jughead's prayer renders betty senseless
2010 release ; ... another title in this mysterious campaign (although i’m looking for answers in a decidedly ... western ... direction from my desk here in ... eastern massachusetts) this time documenting the mighty borbetomagus’ performance at the 2004destroy all music” festival in atlanta ...

... right off the bat the firebombing ensues ; sauter & dietrich, bells both apart & together, channel the experience of being involved in a mid-air collision & the cone of miller’s guitar amp, thrilled at the break from having to produce “that perfect eric johnson tonebuckles, then extends roughly 14 feet across the stage, knocking several front-row worm-church worshippers unconscious ... but, for me at least, the highlight is the unusual section of almost gesturalcall & responsebaiting they latch into mid-second-side, before rebuilding the melée ...

great record ; encapsulates everything i love about the current reality of these guys (love hearing this music on vinyl to boot ) ...

you know that bit at the end of the monterey concert where hendrix sets his guitar on fire?

that's what we do. for a whole hour.

  • an der schönen blauen donau

  • jetzt wird's geil

  • kaiser ebersdorf (interview mit einem entwichenen)
may 2010 release ; to-the-letter repro (albeit, a paste-on ; but a nice one at that) of this scandalously kvlt 1971private press” lp by wiener aktionismus (aka “viennese actionism” or just “actionist) co-founder (along with hermann nitsch, günter brus, and rudolf schwarzkogler) otto muehl ...

starting with some rather inspired sound-poetry, the record whips along at breakneck speed through a bunch of different modes ; muehl is heard screaming about a variety of topics (“a terrible thought” alone covers a wide range of smut) before riding a piano around the room like a 3-legged donkey for a good 5 minutes (listen to the sound-sample for pretty much the whole thing) ... this is followed by a series of proclamations, a muddled bit of group insanity (ala the “aam 1” lp), further baby-speak babble-runes, & a long section miming, then crying along to the strauss’ “blue danube waltz” ...

... the second side continues in said fashion (otto whispers a little pillow-talk before sharing an orgasm or two with a female accomplice, admonishes us for listening ; a group sets out to properly emulate caveman rhetoric ; does his best bernard heidsieck tape-echo impression ; finishes with a round of his beloved shlager) ; at no point do the proceedings dip into also-ran modes - he’s pretty much certifiably insane throughout, pausing not for a second before creeping you out with further guttural grunts & demonic howl-wail(s) ...

absolutely seminal sound-art work ; the last missing piece of the whole actionist puzzle, finally issued for mass consumption ... highest recommendation !!!
no label press release...

otto muehl is an austrian convicted child molester, who is best known as one of the co-founders as well as the most exciting participant of viennese actionism. he's the sort of guy who might fuck a swan, and then scream a little poem about it. in the sixties his aim was 'to overcome painting on canvas through staging the process of its destruction'. he made rhizomatic structures with scrap iron ("gerümpelplastiken"), but soon proceeded to the "aktion" in the vein of the new york happenings. gradually, muehl began to distance himself from "aktion". he regarded the "happening as a bourgeois artform, mere art".

this is an exact reproduction of his 1971 "psycho motorik" lp, which documents that very departure.

february 2010 release ; picture-perfect reissue of this highly obscure(d) 1970 lp (originally released on the pre-caprice expo norr label alongiside sides by thorkell sigurbjörnsson, karl-birger blomdahl, and others) featuring a bunch of amazing field-recorded & tape-sound laced folk-psych instrumentals captured & channeled by solveig bark & tråd grås och stenar / (international) harvester / pärson sound’s bo anders persson ...

travelling throughout sweden that year (landing at many of the yearly festivals more famously worked by tgos & ih-offshoots ) bark & persson both documented & participated in an improvised array of ad-hoc violin, hand-percussion, mouth-harp and bass/guitar/harpjams”, captured in-situ (along with lots of environmental sounds ; children laughing, wind, crowds) with persson capturing everything in blurry detail on his portable tape-machine (the outcome of which makes up the contents of the music herein) ...

grayest-of-grey-area edition, with paste-on covers & a repro of the original insert (detailed below) ... anyone with even a passing interest in the whole swedish commune-psych crossroads with see this for what it is ; one of the last undocumented pieces of a highly fascinating puzzle ... highly recommended !!!
no label press release...

grey area exact reproduction lp of a swedish release from 1970.

a bit of confusion surrounds this release: the album has been credited to träd, gräs och stenar, but they aren't featured on it. bo anders persson did, in fact, in collaboration with solvieg bark, compile, edit and released this album. bo anders persson, was a member of the legendary swedish bands harvester, international harvester, pärson sound, träd, gräs och stenar. solveig bark was one of a few young composers that through the unm (young nordic music festivals) would become a contemporary of erkki kurenniemi, folke rabe, etc. "reportage: spela själv" roughly translates to play yourself. it contains field recordings of amateurs playing / making sounds. raga concrète, if you will. a fine, rare, and lovely piece to behold.

  • untitled (5)
october 2011 release ; ... one-off collaboration between pete swanson & scottoperatorgoodwin, hedging pete’s claustrophobicwall of crisp” with scott’s psycho-acoustics & poly-rhythmic clatter ...

... while a couple of numbers touch on the sort of industrial techno machinations you’d imagine in your mind’s eye when such a meeting-up is proposed, this is actually a rather nuanced & quite spooky, allowing the ghosts embedded in the duo’s machines free reign to act at will ... an excellent tape.
no label press release...

really proud of this one. vepa is a tape of pete swanson and i playing music together for the first time. for eight years we've been pushing each other to make the best music we can make by exchanging honest critique on each other's music and generally musing over expensive beers about why we even do this music thing at all.  usually we were too focused on our own projects to really jam out casually, but we made time for some sessions before pete left portland for nursing school at columbia.

for vepa we attempted to combine some approaches we've both been working on lately, namely pete's tape-saturated echo / loop processing and some of the rhythmic density we'd been exploring in operative. it pairs really nicely with pete's recent, excellent man with potential, but is much more destroyed and laconically paced.

pete swansonfeelings in america” cassette

  • the fermata (16:34)

  • believers (6:30)
october 2011 release ; ... here’s pete’s “private” issue of the “feelings in america” lp, released originally in september 2010 on root strata & gone in a flash ... re: the music ::

... while the a-side blast continues the whole “skullflower meets maurizio bianchi” aspect of his recent solo work, i’m taken by the two segments where he dials back the excess just a little bit to let through a couple stray rays of sunshine & melody ...

... still think this is some of pete’s best solo material, with a certain loren-connors-meets-total lilt throughout ; very glad to have it available again in a pocket-friendly format ...
no label press release...

despite asserting that he "quit music in 2001 .. but kept recording in his basement because it helped him avoid interacting with others", pete swanson has been a very busy guy. as half of (the now defunct) yellow swans for most of the decade, swanson somehow found the time to collaborate with scores of folks (see badgerlore, maggoted, and sarin smoke for starters) while also slowly carving out his own bleak vision of loner sound.

'feelings in america' is the most recent salvo from swanson, and it's as blown out and muddy as you would expect from a damp portland basement. three tracks of guitar & vocals lost in a sea of white hot electronic overload that, according to swanson, "sounds exactly like his old band, but funnier in a depressing sort of way."

... an odd tactic, to handle this in such a hands-off matter, especially as this trumps a great deal of the band’s recent vhf-label output ; the kinds of melting twin-harmonium pump-action & modal vocal swirl the trio get up to herein (esp. the second half) are straight out of the la monte young / pandit pran nath playbook (of which these guys are clearly avid readers) ...

49 john wiese 'circle snare' cd

consider "circle snare" a hard-wrought souvenir. composed and realized in the midst of a comprehensive scandinavian/european tour in 2008, john wiese found himself tangled deep in dialogue with his instruments and ideas. wiese increasingly scrutinized his native tongue and vocabulary, seeking new forms of grammar and cadence, as only extensive dives in unfamiliar waters can inspire. his given electronic anatomy of drum machine, microphones, tapes, and msp folded out of their hard accustomed formations, breaking out into a more cogent and vital arsenal.

"circle snare" is the cumulative result -- a finely detailed and dimensional evolution of an already unique voice. those who have been stalking wiese all along -- through the landmark statement "soft punk," to the recent "dramatic accessories" lp -- will find "circle snare" to be a revelatory work. as wiese continues to travel and work relentlessly and restlessly, we have no choice but to keep up; the circle is a spiral from the side, and the greatest trap is standing still.

charlie nothingthe psychedelic saxophone of charlie nothing” long playing record

  • the psychedelic saxophone of charlie nothing (18:15)

  • in eternity with brother frederic (14:20)
november 2009 release ; near-exactrepro” of this 1967 takoma sub-label release, centering around 60s capsule-intaker & dingulator inventor/philosopher charlie nothing ...

... accompanied by the occasional bongo-jamming (c/o “brother frederic”) & what sounds like a continuous wash of soft-malleted cymbals (more likely the artifact(s) / “dingulations”of stand-mounted dingulators ; bizarre, hand-crafted guitar-like instruments of charlie’s own devising, built from junked american automobiles, pictured here as played by mid-70s agglomerate “the superfabulous dingulators” ::

... some with up to 21 strings ; playable by fretting, tapping, or by hitting the bodies ala percussion instruments)
, charlie (né charles martin simon) absolutely blows his guts out in a freewheeling stream of sax improvisations, in spots recalling braxton’s “for alto” but far less informed by jazz modes ...

this has long been a cult record, rare as hen’s teeth (even many die-hard takoma completists are w/o a copy) ; so this picture-perfect replica (replete with full-color spray-glue-on covers & accurate repro labels) is a real treat ... highly recommended !!!
no label press release...

charlie nothing
was not born. did not die. does not, did not, will not exist. charlie nothing is the artist.

charlie nothing the artist is a subdivision of charles martin simon the writer. some writers have no problem doing art. for example, henry miller was somewhat of a painter. charles martin simon, however, could not, can not, will never be able to do art. when his wife the artist died, he inherited her art supplies and so he had to try, but the experience proved futile, painful, and produced a psyche fragmentation, which he, having been reduced to nothing, named charlie nothing.

charlie nothing could do art fabulously, did and does.

charlie nothing creations span a wide range, the pinnacle being the guitar sculptures made out of american cars called dingulators. dingulators are the ultimate rock and roll art, which makes charlie nothing the ultimate rock and roll artist. fitting for a guy who doesn't exist, although, non-existence may very well be a criterion (based on the total life performances of so many characteristic artists of the genre).

charlie nothing instrument sculptures play with unique sound.

a photo detail of one of charlie nothing's dingulators appears as the back cover art on the very important and very big fine art book by jake jacobson, hearts & minds, musical instrument makers of america and also as the cover art on the "the western region" section of the book.

charlie nothing had many dingalation bands during the 60s, 70s, and 80s. dingulations ranged from very well received (after one performance in l.a., charlie nothing was offered a ton of money to take a tour to viet nam with bob hope to entertain the troops. he declined, figuring he was more likely to get shot than get the money.) to being spat upon by human beings who could not tolerate the disrespect that dingulation represented to the hamster hierarchy of respectable entertainment.

charlie nothing has had many art shows in very established galleries which are no longer in existence. one of the first canvases he ever produced was purchased by the san francisco museum of modern art circa 1963, after being featured in a show called new york artists. he has performed in many places and times, including an official and very exclusive concert in the los angeles museum of modern art. he has written many songs which were anthologized in the "big dingulator song book," which is unavailable. he composed and produced records and tapes as far back as the late 60s. one of his lps "the psychedelic saxophone of charlie nothing" was produced and released by tacoma records and achieved an infinitesimal degree of infamy in europe under the category of new jazz, which, of course, it was not.

charlie nothing quit performing in the 1980s, believing he had evolved past the entertaining-monkey-jumping-up-and-down-on-the-stage stage.

charlie nothing came back to performing in 2004, realizing he was in fact a monkey jumping up and down.

charlie nothing characterizes himself as a philosopher/clown.

i’m a little light on experience over the past few years (damn, i miss the no fun fest) but a set of matt’s that i caught up in burlington, vt in a non-place (literally ; a roofed alley between two buildings) was amongst the finest sets of noise-performance i’ve ever seen, simultaneously calling to mind zsf-era merzbow, the brittle scrap-metal whistle of prime tnb, and a whole host of folks whose music got me into the genre back in the early 90’s ...

this is quite beefy, well-produced stuff ; yet it manages to encapsulate the chaos (and the danger !!!) that makes noise music great ... check this out if, like me, you’ve been somewhat un-inspired with the current state of things ...

angst hase pfeffer naseseashard (elongated)” c40 cassette

  • seashard (elongated) (1)

  • seashard (elongated) (2)
september 2010 release ; label-free, self-issued gem from fat worm of error’s chris cooper, heard here exercising his considerabledigital composition” chops over two side-length constructs ...

i’m gleaning that much of this stems from chrisguitar playing ; but really the source-sounds could be just about anything, micro-edited down to whiz-bang zaps & little room-tone addled improvisations ... all with heavy post-processing (the stereo range is all over the place) bringing it closer to a hecker-styled pure-math extrapolation that anything decidedlymusical” ...

criminal that this isn’t out on vinyl via a label with a wider dispersion-net, but for now we’ll take chrishome-brew edition ; highly recommended !!!
