derek bailey: chitarre elettriche & acustiche
andrea centazzo: percussioni

reprint in cd of the 1977 recordings of the duets between derek bailey and andrea centazzo, that originally were released on the lp drops issued by ictus records.this is considered one of the best performance of the period of the english guitarist for its explosive clarity, dialogic energy and overflowing imagination.

if this is true deserves a large merit the choice of the two musicians to work inside compositional structures, sometimes very opened, that channelled the creative energy of the performers. the many sides of drops are created by the restraint of performing limits with specific choices of timbres, dynamics, tempos for every track.

as centazzo points out in the linear notes «we explored some aspects of our improvisational art, gleaned the best elements from our baggage of music memories and exposed them clearly and confidently. therefore these are compositions of ... improvised music».

andrea centazzo: percussion, percussion synthesizer
alvin curran: synthesizer, piano, tromba
evan parker: soprano & tenor sax

this cd presents a live recording by three outstanding musicians recorded in 1977. centazzo had collaborated both with alvin curran in duo and with evan parker in duo, trio and sextet before this recording.

alvin curran, american composer living in rome, member of the ensemble musica elettronica viva (along with fredrick rzewski, steve lacy, richard teitelbaum a.o.) was related to the post-cagean school and to the improvised music.

evan parker, english, coming from the tradition of jazz, had developing a very personal style deeply rooted in the total improvisation.

the idea of centazzo to call them to form a trio was a very successful one. as a trio the group performed many concerts in italy and recorded several hours of music. the three different languages of the musicians found "a common ground of expression in which the stylistic elements from different musical backgrounds came together and created a unique blend for that era", as centazzo describes the experience.the three mixes the electronic sounds of analog synthesizer with the acoustic instruments producing a very special combination in which is very difficult to recognize the sources of the sound.

the cd is enriched by an unissued track. a second cd including music completely unissued will follow later on in this same series.

essential disc of reich’s early ensemble music , finally in stock !!!
new tone press release...
reich steve
four organs / phase patterns

musicians :
steve reich electric organ
philip glass electric organ (1)
art murphy electric organ
steve chambers electric organ
jon gibson maracas (1),electric organ (2)

this is the cd release of four organs / phase patterns by steve reich, originally issued on shandar records. with this new title we continues the print/reprint serie of historical works of the last thirty years of music, that includes the world premiere of the first two parts of music for 18 musicians (nt 6707), music for pieces of wood (nt 6714) by steve reich; terry riley's persian surgery dervishes (nt 6715) and peter gordon & lolo's geneva & extended niceties (nt 6706).

this is a important and peculiar recording. important because is the first available recording of a live performance of steve reich's music played by real musicians and moreover by an ensemble. up to then his main work it's gonna rain and come out for magnetic tape and the various "phase" (violin phase, piano phase, reed phase) for solo / duo instruments. together with steve reich we find here philip glass (today very well-known american composer) on keyboard, jon gibson, composer and saxophone player with the p. glass ensemble, on keyboard and maracas, art murphy, keyboard, also with p. glass ensemble during the '70s, and steve chambers, composer and keyboardist, first with the p. glass ensemble, then in solo.

peculiar recording both for the instrumentation: electric organs and that for the music. reich has used very rarely electric instruments in his music. the choice of four electric organs, here, gives a "strange" sound to the music, very different from other pieces of the same composer. at a superficial level it resembles very much to certain recordings philip glass in the seventies. last but not least the music is very special. in four organs (and maracas) it is presented, for the first time, the "slow motion music": the basic chord becomes longer and longer, resembling the movement of the pendulum that slowly reaches the quietness, the same for the composition that at the end acquires the ecstatic quality of indian mantras. phase patterns, as from the title, is based on the phasing process, here more complicated by the presence of four performers and anticipated the results of the following reich's masterpiece drumming.

new tone press release...
reprint in cd of the 1977 chatham square lp by jon gibson . this is the second recording realised on newtone records by jon gibson, after visitations (newtone records - nt 6747) and presents five pieces, three of which are unissued. cycles, for solo organ, uses a seven note melodic progression in four-part harmony exploring various technique on the pipe organ. untitled, for solo alto flute, is a long melody where the note sequence is indicated while the other elements of the performance (duration, phrasing, tempo, ...) are left to the player choices. both these compositions combine elements of the written structure with elements of improvisation. then there are three unissued compositions. melody iv part 1 is part of a series of «melody» pieces that use the same melodic material in different contest. another piece of the «melody» series is melody iii, for yamaha organ, built around the number 36 and his possible divisions. close the cd song 1 for quartet that echoes, in the sound and instrumentation, a string quartet with soprano sax, violin and two cellos. the inspiration source is almost traditional and the result is very charming and nice. on cello on this track there is the great american composer and performer arthur russell who died few years ago prematurely. this release offers another possibility to discover the music of composer jon gibson and, more in general, of another side of the american minimal music.

jon gibson, composer and woodwind player is worldly known for his own works and as one of the founder of the philip glass ensemble . his composer's activity include a very wide body of works for solo and ensemble. his compositions have been recorded by point records ,lovely music ,einstein records and earrational records . as performer he has played and recorded with all the most important american composers including lamonte young, steve reich, terry riley, philip glass, moondog, christian wolff.

reprint in cd format of the first lp (originally issued by philip glass' chatham square in the seventies) by the american composer and saxophonist jon gibson. this cd version presents the original material appeared on the lp remixed and edited by the composer and some more unissued material. the original tracks were two long compositions: visitations i - ii, that gibson describes as 16 multi track-textured environmental soundscape. the music presentes several layers of sounds, mostly natural, that create a very unique environmental soundscape. the two tracks are different mixing of the same tapes. in a moment of re-discovery of the ambient music this add an element of interest: the possibility to hear recordings that anticipated the philosophy, and often the results of today most trendy sounds. the third track on the cd is the world premiere, recorded in london in 1972, of one of the most important of gibson's composition thirties. the material is entirely unissued and presents gibson performing with other players that are important composers on their own: gavin bryars, christopher hobbs, david rosenboom. here the accent is mostly on the rhythmic insistence of the composition.

jon gibson, american, composer and saxophone player, is one of the most important exponent of the american minimal music school. his music has been recorded by lovely music, ear rational, einstein. as performer gibson took part to several very important world premieres, such as drumming by steve reich, in c by terry riley and einstein on the beach by philip glass. he is a founder of the philip glass ensemble. under his name gibson recorded a cd, in good company (point music), presenting compositions by the most important minimalist composers, some written for him.

charlemagne palestinestrumming music” compact disc

  • strumming music (49:50)
click the play button to hear an excerpt of "strumming music"
much like the garlo disc, this and the terry riley set below are two other perennials ... this being palestine’s most well-known work, and arguably his best. finally back in stock after being sold out for two years !!!

just an unbelievably great long trance-inducing solo piano piece, rife with overtone clusters, composed and performed by mr. palestine. if you had to pick one entry point into his sound-world (a middle ground between adult-child overtones/stuffed animals and the ‘serious’ avant-gardes), i’d recommend this one uncategorically ...
new tone press release...
charlemagne palestine is probably the less known, and the most legendary, among the great masters of the american minimal music, but he is not, for this reason, less important.

differently from la monte young ,terry riley ,steve reich and philip glass charlemagne palestine, after a first phase of intense research to definite the musical language that in the late seventies will be called minimalism, preferred to dedicate his creativity in the visual arts field presenting very personal installation with exhibition in many important galleries getting a very successful response. this choice cut him out of the musical world, his carrier as pianist and composer was interrupted and he never succeeded in getting the public recognition his musical activity deserved.

it exist in the world very few recordings and records by palestine, strumming music is probably his first cd. luckily in the recent past palestine is rethinking about the music and is preparing a coming back; among other works he is completing a string quartet for kronos quartet.

the music consists of a single track of approximately 45 minutes per solo piano played by palestine. a composition very strong and intense, the acoustic sound of the piano, thanks to a great technique and a very strong physical force, becomes the sound of an entire orchestra full of harmonics.

from the historical point of view gives the opportunity to discover the music of one the pioneer of the minimal music. it is the reprinting, in cd format, of palestine's most known composition: strumming music, originally issued in the contemporary composer series of shandar records . the packing, as before for the reprinting of terry riley - persian surgery dervishes - nt 6715 and steve reich - four organs - newtone rdc 5018 respect completely the original one, just one thing has been added a joan la barbara review of a live performance of strumming music of 1975.

...

charlemagne palestine was born in brooklyn, new york in 1945. his formal education includes music and art high school; mannes college of music; the new school for social research and new york university. from 1964.1970 he was carillonneur at saint thomas church, nyc. he was composer in residence at new york university and has taught at california institute of the arts ano nova scotia college of art. his works have been performed all over the united states, canada and europe. apart from his music he is also known for his body~art, video and purely visual works

strumming music is a work developed over the past five years utilizing a note alternation technique with the sustain pedal of the piano constantly depressed. this technique allows the undampened strings to resonate and compound with each other creating complex mixtures of pure strummed sonority and their overtones. no electronics or special tunings are utilized; only the finest instrument available to day, the rolls royce of pianos, “bosendorfer" of vienna, all of mr palestine's piano works have been composed especially for this marvelous instrument.

charlemagne palestine
the idea warehouse
22 reade st.
ny

the idea warehouse space was quite dark at 9.00 sunday night, setting a quiet mood for charlemagne palestine's performance of his «strumming music». several red lights illuminated the bosendorfer piano, adorned with the teddy bears, monkeys and cognac bottles, which has become charlemagne ~trademark. (solo performance is a lonely experience;~ the extreme highs and fears can be fully appreciated only by oneself and private comfort can come from many sources.)

charlemagne appeared in the red-lit space, dedicated the series of concerts to his brother, howard sue palestine who died recently, clarified that the microphones inside the piano were only to record the concert, and turned off the remaining red lights, leaving the space lit only by light from the street and scattered cigarettes.

beginning with a single tone, played as softly as possible and then adding the fifth above, palestine began playing a slow tremolo on the open fifth, varying the pressure attack on the keys to make some notes stronger and to bring out differences in tone color and timbre, giving a sound spectrum spread from bright and metallic to soft, rich and round. the particular sound qualities of this instrument are an important part of the music and palestine accentuated its tonal idiosyncrasies, making us conscious of the texture and shape of sound as it flowed in waves from piano, and reminding us how much music comes from 2 tones. (it is our language which is inadequate, not our music).

someone in the~ corner began to dance and others gave in to this impulse throughout the evening, most of them choosing to spin. i noticed the shadow patterns on the ceiling caused by the street lights shining through the window panes and was reminded of light-shapes from my childhood. (i thought of marina zazeela's lacey design projections from last year's kitchen dream house and decided they now seemed inadequate approximations city nightlights.)

keeping the persistent rhythm intense and steady, palestine added tones gradually dealing with sound clusters rather than melodies and acoustic properties rather than traditional rules of harmony and rhythm. added tones appeared as voices or distant horn calls, all created by the piano and variation of physical weight on the keys. (palestine deals with body control as part of the music~ arm strength is needed for duration and muscles spasms and tension are used to vary intensity and tempo.) he is concerned with the beauty of sound, almost as an object, and his audience is duly enthralled. performacne seems the most abstracts of arts, existing as it does in the very present tense. a piece may be repeated but will never be exactly the same in any two performences. it is an experience a performer shares with an audience - the enactment of a particular piece )in this case music, of music) which can be altered by the state of the performer's mind and the quality of decisions made each time it is re-enacted.
