robert horton
sleep, wake, hope, and then cd [mf31]

sleep, wake, hope, and then are the most recent pieces by robert horton, striving to create an album full of recordings that shimmer and change the light.

on two pieces horton enlists the magic of gong-ologist and percussionist dean moore. dean is a hidden treasure who lives and plays in seattle and is a member of the group yuan, along with horton, michael shannon and edward guerriero.

the rest of the pieces are horton conjuring spirits with his homemade instruments, teasing objects with contact microphones, squeezing tones till they splinter into high harmonics and weaving webs of fractured bytes into modal vodka.

horton's has performed and recorded for almost 30 years in a variety of outlets. he founded the appliances, part of sf's first wave of punk bands in 1979, and formed the tribal noise drone group plateau ensemble in 1983. since then, he has been a prominent contributor to the last two revolutions in home recording, both the cassette culture of the 80s and 90s and the cdr zeitgeist of the 00s.

robert records under his own name, egghatcher, and future ears. he is currently a member of kyrgyz, beautiful friend, infinite article, broken mask, and the duo with tom carter.

mike tamburo & his orchestra
the ghosts of marumbey cd [mf27]

mike tamburo is back again picking, droning, buzzing and rocking with the biggest line up of the universal orchestra of pituitary knowledge (his backing band). collaborators on this project include ken camden (meisha), keenan lawler, brad rose (north sea, etc.), jeff komara (arco flute foundation, air guitar magazine), matt mcdowell (nux, arco flute foundation), pete spynda (meisha, arco flute foundation, air guitar magazine), bryan camphire (bloody panda), blake mcdowell (bloody panda), wilson lee (fathmount), john fail (lied music, etc.), tusk lord, nick schillace, charlie vinz (head of femur, stmonroe, bobby conn band).

the ghosts of marumbey were born in a dream. most interesting things are implanted in our minds, intentionally or not, signposts pointing to anywhere. mike tamburo has spent the last few years searching for marumbey in every nook and cranny of this fucked up beautiful country, and in other places, too. under the rugs and behind the couches, out back behind green gardens and underneath gray-gold branches of sunkissed forest. or maybe it was just here all along, invisible to the touch but breathing the lives of so many that have come before. this is the sound of a place that never existed but still pulses with bubbling, mutating life. this is a ballad for a battle never fought - a dream never-ending” - lee jackson.

co-released with new american folk hero.

rameses iii
matanuska cd [mf26]

the uk's rameses iii hail from a place where subtle drifts are priceless. these insular drones are highlighted by rich acoustic depths, adding so much contrast that it's heartbreaking. recordings of birds add a natural grace, and in the context, this trio is freed. within these digital walls rises something majestic, extracted from the soil.

with their latest full-length release, rameses iii build upon their burgeoning reputation as architects of beautifully striking soundscapes. matanuska invites metaphor, conjures atmosphere and envelopes the listener in its shroud. waves of strings and keyboards create ambient sculptures that eventually find release in a blossom of bucolic folk. matanuska will appeal to fans of stars of the lid, eyvind kang, brian eno, thomas koner and richard youngs.

keenan lawler
ghost of a plane of air cd [mf25]

r.keenan lawler has spent the last 25 years developing his own personal sound world, constantly pushing himself in new directions and developing new techniques, while remaining completely focused on his vision. his experiments on 1930 national resonator guitar are the stuff of legend you sometimes hear from town to town by someone who may have had the good fortune to witness one of his performances. words such as cosmic, monolithic and deeply american have been used to describe the experience of his music. he has worked with other like-minded musicians such as matmos, pelt, rhys chatham, john butcher, charalambides, ignaz schick, philip samartzis, my morning jacket, david watson and lukas ligeti.

in 1999 he self released ghost of a plane of air, it quickly went out of print and has since been heralded by many as a minimalist masterpiece. it is now available for a larger audience. lawler here pushes the bounds and very definition of the resonator guitar: bowing, picking, scraping, knocking and combining it with electro-acoustic manipulations and on site recordings. the sound that pours from the speakers is dense, affecting, cavernous and like no other, often delving from delicate picking into a flurry of notes and ecstatic drones.

ghost of a plane of air is the sound of a man looking deep into his soul and coming out the other side changed, scarred and poetic. this reissue has been remastered, and includes a previously unreleased song recorded during the same time period.

arco flute foundation, the
everything after everything after the bomb is sci-fi cd [mf19]

the arco flute foundation formed in 1999 when two-thirds of pittsburgh’s minimalist drumless rock trio meisha moved to edinboro, pa to attend the small state university located there. with little else to do in this sleepy farm town, mike tamburo and pete spynda devoted themselves to this new band with matt mcdowell and jeff komara. komara provided the drums meisha always purposefully lacked, giving the new band a distinct identity, both leading the sound into massive rock bombast (like mogwai or kinski) and into expansive, earthy drone and clatter (like no-neck blues band or franciscan hobbies) while never straying from the crystalline, hypnotic guitar interplay that so identified meisha.

over the next four years, the arco flute foundation toured the united states several times and released three full length albums (the second lesson in new era time as well as the third and everything after the bomb is sci-fi, all three on cenotaph audio). live performances were usually against a film backdrop, with tamburo’s hand-painted films covering the band. their improvised moments included guitar, electronics, bells, and various inventive percussive elements.

while the band grew tremendously during those four years, increasing their use of experimentation both in composition and musicianship, reaching their peak in creativity, this peak also coincided with graduation and separation. tamburo currently lives is between homes, and is actively making solo recordings, while much of the rest of the band has relocated to pittsburgh and has begun again as air guitar magazine. everything after everything after the bomb is sci-fi is exactly what the title states: all of arco flute foundations best recordings - both live and in their home studio - since their third album was recorded, documenting the most creative moments of this artistic collaboration.

spiderwebs / mike tamburo & matthew mcdowell / keenan lawler
strands formerly braided cd [mf15]

when you unbraid your hair, the strands remain curled and contorted for some time. the act of braiding the strands together affects the structure and fibers of the hair, taking days or even weeks for the hair to relax back into its natural position. this relationship between strands in a braid is similar to relationships between people. each interaction, especially ones with close friends, affects and influences the interactions you have later on. thus, strands formerly braided is a fitting title for this edition of the music fellowship's triptych series because the three featured artists have a long history of improvisation and collaboration.

spiderwebs is the duo of tom carter and sandy ewen. carter is best known for his work with the landmark drone group charalambides, which he formed with longtime creative partner christina carter. since 2002, carter has begun collaborating with a wide range of other artists, from his work with 60’s australian folk poet and songwriter, pip proud, to his improvisations with psychedelic stoner rock band bardo pond. for this release, he teams with sandy ewen who has a long history of improvisation as well, from her membership in houston's meca improvisational ensemble to her performances in the nameless sound collective concert series and austin's no idea festival.

mike tamburo has been a member of the pittsburgh avant garde music scene as an integral part of crystalline drumless drone rock structures of meisha and the more-free flowing ethnic apocalypse music of arco flute foundation, as well as countless spontaneous performances and post-gathering improv sessions. for this recording, we present one the best efforts of these spontaneous performances, reteaming tamburo with matthew mcdowell of arco flute foundation for a minimalist, pacific 23-minute drone.

for over a decade, louisville's r. keenan lawler has been quietly evolving a highly personal and exploratory language on the resonator guitar which has been called "cosmic, monolithic and deeply american". his music is informed by sources ranging from carnatic classical, charles ives, albert ayler, blues, minimalism and non western trance musics. although primarily a solo performer he is best known for his collaborative work. the keyhole ii album he recorded with pelt and metal worker eric clark is one of pelt's most beautiful and memorable recordings, and the recording of his guitar playing in a sewer pipe in louisville is featured on matmos' the civil war. he has also performed or collaborated with a wide range of musicians including rhys chatham, john butcher, charalambides, my morning jacket, kevin drumm, and lukas ligeti. for this release, we present an exclusive recording from lawler, featuring his trademark national steel resonator guitar and his unique method of playing with sound.

1 mile north / colophon / the wind-up bird
conduction. convection. radiation. cd [mf14]

named for the scientific terms that define the three methods of heat transfer, conduction. convection. radiation. is the third edition in the music fellowship’s triptych series, which combines ep-length recordings from three like-minded bands on a single cd. electronic, minimalist, and post-rock music is much maligned for being ‘cold,’ implying the style of composition is more rooted in technique and complexity than the heart. conduction. convection. radiation. combines three artists who destroy that stereotype.

1 mile north is jon hills on guitar and mark bajuk on synthesizers. hills' ability to shape subtle melodies out of abstract structures blends beautifully with bajukís masterful playing of a diverse collection of analogue synthesizers.

colophon is the solo project of tarentel’s jefre cantu. colophon’s music builds off cantuís droning guitar work in tarentel, but deconstructs it, leaving only the bare essence.

the wind-up bird is joe grimm sometimes accompanied by jeff smith. on their 2nd album, whips, on the music fellowship, grimm used his powerbook, guitar, vocals, violin, and horns to musically interpret a post-breakup voicemail message, creating a luxuriant dark dream and a revelatory song suite.

franciscan hobbies, the
walls are stuck cd [mf13]

san francisco's the franciscan hobbies return with their fourth full-length album (& second proper cd) of cooperative folk-noise & abstract nature processionals. based around thuja-explorers glenn donaldson, loren chasse & rob reger, this free-form musical body also encompasses another half-dozen friends from likeminded bands such as the muons, the buried civilizations, leaf yard & the shitty listeners. the title walls are stuck was inspired by a quote from pandit pran nath: ìinside, walls are stuck; outside, ideas fly in all directions.î the hobbies have been known to put this into practice by taking their junk folkñinstruments, boomboxes & mini-discs outside, gathering in canyons, creek beds, backyards, and on porches & beaches.

the franciscan hobbies are part of the expansive jewelled antler forest of bands & projects. jewelled antler co-founders glenn donaldson & loren chasse have been involved in creating over 25 cd-rís, cdís, records & tapes, ranging from straight field recordings to multi-layered psych-pop music to rumbling drones.

glenn donaldson also appears as the ivytree, the birdtree, the skygreen leopards, the blithe sons & a dozen others, recording for such labels as catsup plate, jagjaguwar, fat cat, family vineyard, emperor jones & 267 lattajja. fellow blithe son, loren chasse records as of & is also a member of the child readers & coelacanth, with releases on anomalous, mallard lake, emperor jones & family vineyard.
