| | second-and-final album from adam, yoni, and dave. to reiterate, the first clouddead album, along with the doseone and boom bip “circle” album, make up the core of a reactionary stance to hip hop proper (all while remaining fairly nestled within the inner rungs of said). these guys wear their flying saucer attack fan club badges right and center on their shorts, and i’m always a fan of anything that mixes two seemingly disparate movements in a highly sensible manner. |
| | | upon release of clouddead's self-titled debut, journalists around the world attempted to describe the unmistakable clouddead sound. three years, numerous solo projects, and a break-up (or two) later, the trio returns with a most impressive followup. on ten clouddead builds on all the elements that defined their debut: razor sharp vocal interplay, quirky found sound samples, ambient drone dreamscapes, lyrics that walk the line between observational and confessional, and a fair share of odd nosdam's drums slowed to a growl. whether scorning america's gun culture, using a car crash as a metaphor for stardom, or describing a tour van window view that includes oil drills and a dead deer, doseone and why? never take the cheap way out. their lyrics may range from blurry and buried to sharp and surfaced, but each and every line has meaning. the music and production are collaborative, featuring doseone's knack for articulating emotion, why's self-taught multi-instrumentalist efforts, and odd nosdam's flair for borrowed genius. individually, doseone, why? and odd nosdam are as prolific and fearless as anyone in new music today, but together as clouddead they create music that captures all the promise of their individual talents in an unequaled sound. ten is clouddead's crowning achievement. |
