| ...one of my favorite 2007 discoveries has been the groovy records catalogue... three records released by pete shelley & friends in 1980, two of which appear on the “nurse with wound list” ...
the first, and arguably the best is a little number called “£3.33” by the free agents; a troupe led by eric “random” ramsden here with barry anderson, pete shelley, and francis cookson in tow; who in 1980 laid the london ymca to waste with their brand of raw oscillator gurgle and messed-up live-dub extrapolations...
while this set doesn’t contain that particular bit, it does offer a bunch of art-damaged early 80s uk-electronic weirdness, ranging from the liquid-sky-esque harmonized-vocal grump of “dow chemical co”, the mutant drum-machine funk / plunderphonics of “23 skidoo”, etc... if the early 80s home-recorded synth-spectrum ogles your wardrobe, this could be good for you... |

| ltmcd 2437 eric random | subliminal 1980-82
double-cd from cult manchester electronica pioneer eric random, best known for his early post-punk recordings for new hormones and crepuscule, and collaborations with pete shelley (buzzcocks), cabaret voltaire and nico. as an original member of the tiller boys with pete shelley, random injected a healthy dose of krautrock into the dour manchester post-punk scene in 1978/79, before going solo the following year. his early singles included dow chemical company, subliminal and that's what i like about me, the latter an nme single of the week in 1980. his first album, earthbound ghost need, arrived in march 1982, and features guest contributions from richard h. kirk and stephen mallinder of cabaret voltaire. these early records are variously informed by electronica, loops, jazz, dub and mutant funk.
this digitally remastered set features the first three eric random singles on new hormones and les disques du crepuscule together with two rare compilation-only tracks for touch and plurex, with the 1982 album earthbound ghost need on the second disc. all of which adds up to a total playing time of 105 minutes of sinister, sonambulent random music. the artwork is based on an original image by claude stassart and the booklet features liner notes and archive images. |
