just got some fresh copies of this, one of mms’ all-time best sellers, direct from mr. greg davis during his trip down the mountain for the 2nd entschuldigen nacht... get it while it’s fresh!

always a pleasure to hear greg in full-on electro-acoustic mode; here working in tandem with the fantastic chicagoland drummer/percussionist steven hess (see: bosco & jorge, his duo “on” with sylvain chaveau, the dropp ensemble, and on stage with black forest / black sea, aram shelton, etc...) the pair do their damnedest to emulate laotian insect-population buildup via hess’ pointillist tap & greg’s fft-smear. by far the most patient & abstract work in either of their respective canons, well worth investigating...

greg davis - laptop
steven hess - drums and percussion

all tracks are live improvisations recorded direct to mini-disc between february and june of 2003 at steven’s apartment. fades and minor edits were applied afterwords. track 2 is from a recording of a live performance at the empty bottle, chicago on 29 april 2003.

a truly fine and austere statement from our favorite electric troubadour and the percussive fog known as steven hess.

“steven hess has been a student of his record collection since the mid-'70s. comfortable playing in a range of settings - rock, jazz, experimental, steven currently plays with the post-folk unit bosco & jorge out of chicago. he tours throughout the united states and can be heard on recordings that are available worldwide. his philosophy on sound and rhythm: less is more. steven has played, or otherwise collaborated with, such artists as: ben miller (destroy all monsters), fred longberg-holm, jon mueller, matt turner, rob mazurek, cynthia dall, adam sonderberg, aram shelton, john and frank navin (the aluminum group), and greg davis, to name a few.”

adam sonderberg / paul bradleyanoxia” compact disc

  • (no tracklisting)
collaboration between longbox label-head sonderberg and colin potter/darren tate/jonathan coleclough/andrew chalk-axis (icr-axis? robot-axis?) composer/sound-artist paul bradley. typically huge low-end work, positively rattling. comes in a nice clear-ish thin-line amaray (i.e. dvd-case.)

francisco lópezwasps” three inch compact disc

  • wasps
early (1993) micro-epic from lopez, here in slow-arc mode. over 19 minutes pink/white noise filtered out entirely above about 430hz gets a little louder, stays there, then subsides. an interesting early peek into the mind of lopez, identity not yet fully formed? you be the judge...

composed and recorded at messor studios (madrid) in 1993.
remastered at mobile messor in 2002.

there is no better way to celebrate longbox's 30th release than by issuing a recording by this absolute sound practitioner. originally recorded in 1993, this is one of francisco's most sensual pieces. a natural high-end mist is contrasted by a dense, majestic and unrelenting bass rumble that sounds like swarms of it's namesake engulfing you in a warm aural glow.

“insects have always been an important element in my life. i worked on entomology for a number of years and when i recorded 'wasps', some ten years ago, i was still under the influence of a diffuse sense of inspiration from insects. this piece was originally 2-hours long and got a lot of the sonic droning textures i was playing with at the time. to me, it has an immersive quality that i pursue in all my work with sound environments. It doesn't give me the feeling of ambient-like stuff or repetition, but rather a flowing, endless presence of deep complex sound.” - francisco lópez

dropp ensemblethe empire builders (music for theatrical performance)” compact disc

  • introduktion
  • grå (1-3)
  • dessutom
very nice sprawling minimal electro-acoustic improv from a global group of collaborators featuring eric la casa, steven hess, brendan walls, wolfgang fuchs, adam sonderberg, and others; offered as the score to a chicagoland production of the titular boris vian play. hess’ close-mic’ed cymbal rupture is especially “on” throughout...

composed and assembled by dellaria/sonderberg, february - march 2003 in chicago, il. recorded by dropp ensemble (chicago, paris, sydney, vienna).

this disc features music commissioned for the play 'the empire builders' by boris vian. consisting of three long tracks, the music is quiet and meditative, due in part to the fact that it is a soundtrack, and to support the plot and action of the play. this plot and action though is not about comfortable ambience. rather, the sound clearly identifies the play's themes of paranoia, rising tension, and escape. the soundtrack focuses on the psychological turmoil that the play addresses via its characters. the quiet and dark spaces explored on the recording are a successful quest in transmitting the unspoken fear, the unknown, and the doom of complacency experienced by the characters, making the recording able to stand on its own beyond the physical viewing of the play.

“the more adam and i work together, the less involved we are in the sound producing elements on our records. most of what we did on "the empire builders" was assemby, that is selecting recordings from material provided to us by members of the ensemble. the bulk of "introduktion" was electonics, guitar and percussion recorded live in what appeared to be an old meat locker. "grå" is modified recordings of adam's boiler room. dessutom was assembled from recodings given to us by wolfgang, alexander and eric. ta da.” - sam dellaria

cp 1999/2002 longbox recordings.

this is an amazing solo piano recording from 1999 that was issued and then fell out of print. it’s now available again, in a new and improved form. hamilton cut and assembled these improvisations into compositions. some edits are noticable, most are not (the former is to help keep the context correct). a retelling of history from the not-so top quality recordings engineered by sonderberg/dellaria. imagine boulez, satie and a tape machine were to somehow be rendered down into a tasty bouillon cube and dissolved in a cup of hot water that was consumed by greg hamilton. in addition, a very fine solo organ piece - ala '60s john cale - concludes this modern day musique concrete classic.
