sir richard bishop
while my guitar violently bleeds
locust90
cd

this is an essential document by one of america's most original and inventive unaccompanied guitarists working today. while my guitar violently bleeds is a splendid three piece gem in which the good sir branches out & nods to points west, east & otherworldly. classic spaghetti western tinged spidery fretwork (“zurvan”), fushitsusha style feedback drenched psych decay (“smashana”) and a brilliant lengthy raga epic (“mahavidya”) round out the proceedings by the sun city girls master musician.

silmaril
the voyage of icarus
locust 87
cd
2007-03-05

awash in fuzz boxes and acid trips, the dozens of other overlooked groups from the psychedelic era bear little resemblance to silmaril. while others buzzed within the hippie epicenters of haight street and the lower east side, silmaril formed in haunted, industrial milwaukee. other bands might have met at a love-in; silmaril were friends from a catholic youth retreat bound together by a doomed figure in the eccentric madman tradition of syd barrett, roy harper and mel lyman by the name of matthew peregrine.

the voyage of icarus captures the dark, mysterious, and achingly beautiful acid folk & christian themed psychedelic sounds that emanated from 1973’s privately pressed album, given time... or the several roads, and their dormant, unreleased follow up no mirrored temple.

locust 84 cd/locust 71 lp
cd / 180 gram lp
2006-09-12

ceiling songs are made from the ground up. here is what they are made of. mostly taped up player piano rolls, broken music boxes, stringed instruments, feedbacking squaky speaker birds, holy holy afternoon sunglight, self serving computer interruptions, archaic mechanizations, and all the sad and happy people everywhere...they made me do it....

ethan rose is a musician and sound artist based in portland, oregon whose solo activities focus on the disassembly and reconstruction of familiar and forgotten noises. by making use of found objects and automated musical instruments as source material, his work is an exploration of order and accident; meandering consonant sounds that stretch the confines of the object's original intention.

to date, rose has produced two small run multiples for locust: 2004's miniature & sea & 2005's the dot & his first fullength ceiling songs. initailly issued as a vinyl only gem at the end of '05 (locust71), you folks who put away and / or never acquired a turntable have a chance to get the drift of it.

locust 83
cd / 180 gram lp
2007-07-24

coach fingers is serious about having fun and with the debut long player no flies on frank, no one is spared from the plentiful good vibes frank has to offer. packed with more hooks than a ship crowded with one armed pirates, no flies on frank is a meaty affair of giddy but bearded late '60s/early '70s outlaw boogie rock & roll prominently featuring three members of the new york free noise whatsit collective the no neck blues band -- coach jason meagher, dave nuss & dave shuford -- along with meagher's brother sean on keys and -- future guitar god worshippers take note -- the coach's secret weapon, master shredder george devoe.

so come on, friends, it's time to join the fingers friends & family in the beaujolais revolution; take a sip from a glass full of ronnie lane's boozy rock, the charming laissez-faire balladry of kevin ayers (circa joy of a toy & whatevershebringswesing) & a whole lot of crazy fun.

2006-08-22

steffen basho-junghans approaches the great american landscape - it's ripe and bountiful mythologies - with his wooden guitar in much the same way that his german countryman wim wenders has with his camera.

last days of the dragons is a terrific, freewheeling collection of 8 six & twelve string unaccompanied guitar pieces by belin based guitarist steffen bash-junghans that seems to pick up where he left off on his contribution to the locust wooden guitar compilation that got the ball rolling.

henry flynt - electric violin
c.c. hennix - pandit pran nath tamboura

although native north carolinian cum downtown new yorker henry flynt maintained associations with celebrity artist yoko ono, performed with john cale & lamonte young, sat in with the velvet underground and took part in numerous happenings throughout the 1960s, for some 30 years the violinist /guitarist /wild man vocalist feverishly produced and documented a perplexingly large body of work in relative obscurity. save for an art ghetto style cassette release by a german gallery in 1981, henry flynt's many-headed musical vison went largely unpublished until the 21st century set in.

he's made his mark with his brand of ecstatic north indian raga inspired minimalism on c tune (locust3), the full bodied experimentalism anthologized on raga electric (locust6) and the avante-hillbilly bumpkin fiddle joyride on the two volume back porch hillbilly blues volume 1 & 2 (locust 16 & 14), & last year's agro punk i don't wanna ? with his 1966 garage rock protest band, the insurrections (locust39).

purified by the fire is the 6th in locust music's ongoing archival releases of henry's work.

the psychedelic sounds of musical pioneer henry flynt's drone works with collaborator c.c. hennix are quietly becoming the stuff of legend. over some 40 plus minutes, we are treated to a true tour de force that's part hindustani inflected musical miasma and part warped hillbilly vibrational swing that sways in and out of auditory focus. this is vertiginous music for the third ear.

last year saw an explosion & all too welcome interest in a vital, tightly knit scene of artists from finland. out of the communal circle of prodigious finnish musicians comes this lovely 10 song debut solo outing of abstract folk, stray kiss lullaby & plucked blues by laura naukkarinen

sung in her native tongue, kuutarha intimates a secret language outside traditional word speak into something utterly beautiful & unrestrained. melody is suggested through the contours of voice, guitar & violin and arrangement has less to do with the placement of things than with lau’s comfort in letting sounds fall where they may.

locust press release...
after a stellar performance on mushi-no-ne , no. 9 continues to indulge in childlike whimsy on micro films -- a small story in sound and pictures of the entire world of plants and animals.

this is organic music that evolves with time -- like the memory of a good movie or book -- and, as the album title suggests, with just a little light & magnification, dazzling new audiovisual vistas are opened up to the naked ear.

micro films is a tour de force of animated mellow electropop encompassing downtempo, pop minimalism, ambient glitch drill'n' bass and acid jazz, where the rhythms of insects and the scurrying impressions of city life on the tokyo streets are one in joe takayuki's design.

packaged with a beautiful collection of 13 illustrations by 13 contemporary japanese artists.

on a single october evening in 1959, fabled people's poet kenneth patchen and vancouver's alan neil quartet made a little bit of history. together, they cut one of the first jazz-and poetry recordings to disc - fiery, spontaneous and free of pretensions, where hard bop playing wailed neck-and-neck with patchen's scathing, slurred, rabid vocalizations.

today, many see jazz in canada as among the very first truly beat documents on record - preceding efforts by kerouac, ferlinghetti & ginsberg. this new edition features original notes by alan neil & new retrospective notes by rock'n'roll poet of the san francisco renaissance david meltzer.

bnsf

inspired by natural cycles of texture and repetition, bnsf creates music with an organic momentum. building music from the melodic noise and polyrhythms of industrial activity, bnsf exists between aleatory structure and song form, music and noise.

adam diller, jason e anderson, and matt crane met through their involvement with open music workshop, an offshoot of the recent explosion in seattle's improvised music scene. a sense of purpose was established during the first improvisations of the trio, spurring the formation of bnsf. meeting at their practice space near a train junction in downtown seattle, they realized the importance of the environment's influence on their music.

drawing on their surroundings, bnsf took their name from a passing train car. they began experimenting by playing in construction zones, under a highway overpass, through a huge metal tube in a shop yard, and next to unloading freight trains.

matmosrat relocation program (met life 6 / location sound series 1:6)” compact disc

  • rat
  • rat relocation
matmos here providing the last entry into the locust “met life / location sound series” series with their unadorned recordings of a captured street rat (track 1), then their krautrock-centric response piece...
locust press release...
a street rat was breaking into our apartment, eating our food and chewing holes in our clothes, skittering across our kitchen in the dark, scuttling inside our walls late at night. since we already had a pet rat, the prospect of trying to kill one rat while feeding another struck us as intolerable hypocrisy, so we bought a non-lethal "have-a-heart trap". after several days of luring the invader closer and closer towards and then inside the trap with peanuts, we captured her. the first track is an unedited recording of the rat protesting its incarceration. the second track is our response, in which the timing and duration of the rat screams from the first track have been preserved. the following morning we took the rat to a wealthy suburban neighborhood and set it free.” - drew daniel

the dynamic hybrid electro-rock duo matmos strike again with this zany, completely mesmerizing 2 track contribution to the met life series of field recordings and ingenious sound responses.

the matmos boys stretch an ominous canvas with the bare sounds of an incarcerated rat ensconced in a friendly trap and paint an unlikely response. rat relocation program is a heavily elevated, gleeful electro-rock epic that combines matmos' patented blend of humor, drill & bass with cinematic krautrock reminiscent of the animated cult fantasy sci-fi film the fantastic planet. volume 6 of our location sound series, met life.

attractive twofold in that it’s a mantra-riffic solo split acoustic guitar/banjo recital of basho-tic proportions and that it was released on mr. zonked henry jacobs’ mea label back in the day.

truly inspiring long-arc solo instrumentals (most peaking with a good 5 minute bit of static raga-murk) from these two bay-area dwellers.

especially effective in enlightening those only now drawing parallels between late takoma/early windham hill raw guitar gestures and the sort of “highbrow” minimalism practiced by palestine/flynt et.al (ignore the grateful dead ties and you’ll rest easier).

cut in the mid-1960s, intensifications is an obscure and illuminating slice of marin county raga folk, a taste of latter day deltadelica that s a must for fans of the acid folk sound old and new. together, estribou and pickens each cut a side of brilliant, meandering unaccompanied instrumentals:  estribou on acoustic guitar and pickens on banjo. this single document has only ripened with age and should make it clear to anyone who ventures to give it a listen that both estribou & pickens deserve their place in the inner sanctum of charismatic acoustic guitar legends. originally released on henry jacobs mea label.

locust press release...
israeli psychedelic pioneer danny ben-israel was born and raised in tel aviv, beginning his music career while serving in the israeli defense forces' northern command alongside future pop stars gadi yagil and koby oshrat.

while still in the idf he enjoyed a series of israeli pop hits, and following his discharge he continued his music career, appearing in several musicals in addition to writing and recording for films. in 1968 ben-israel toured europe, briefly settling in austria and recording an lp, happy birthday, rock'n'roll ; according to legend, while in austria he experimented regularly with drugs and immersed himself fully in the burgeoning countercultural movement, returning to tel aviv in early 1969 intent on spreading the psychedelic gospel.

upon his arrival home he befriended guitarist shlomo mizrahi ? acclaimed in some quarters as "the israeli jimi hendrix " ? who led the power trio ha'bama ha'hashmalit ( the electric stage ). together they recorded 1970's bullshit 3 1/4 , one of the first and most acclaimed israeli psychedelic efforts ? a singular document wedding ben-israel's soaring, dramatic vocals (recorded in hebrew) with distorted guitars, tape loops, and other studio experiments, the album was harshly criticized by the local media, making a negligible commercial impact despite its esteem among latter-day collectors.

ben-israel and ha'bama ha'hashmalit then reunited for an english-language session ? intended for release on a small american label that went bankrupt prior to the album's release, the resulting tapes languished in the vaults for over three decades, finally seeing release as the kathmandu sessions. - jason ankeny

espers are a boy/girl/girl trio from philly featuring singer/songwriter greg weeks, meg baird and brooke sietinsons who combine the elemental sound of acid-folk with the baroque arrangements of late 60s chamber rock.

fully versed in the sumptuous vernacular of drug music, the cradle of appalachian song, and the succinct truths of the three-minute pop ballad, their full length debut is an irresistible collection of sweet and subtle songs essential for fans of fairport convention, pentangle, jackson c. franck, bread, love & dreams and bert jansch.

espers are the sound of the new weird america the way it should be heard -- with the ease, infectious grace and absolute beauty of an ever expansive trio bound for ever greater pastures.

dragons 1976 is the chicago horn-bass-drum trio of aram shelton. jason ajemian & tim daisy. cool, steady and swinging, on cortez is a perfect tonic for the modern jazz lover in search of a shady retreat from the hot coals of fiery free jazz. these boys make a catchy, flavorful music - let’s call it noir jazz.

dragons 1976 turn more corners with their brand of infectiously tight grooves and cinematic twists than a screen gems tornado roaring through the heart of downtown los angeles.

cd
2004-01-20

our man flynt shatters the categories once again with this surprise collection of his short lived basement rock protest band, the insurrections, from 1966. let there be no doubt in anyone's mind: flynt's version of protest music isn't your cultural-commissar school of folk posturing. it's aggro and flynt is an unhinged showman on helium induced vox and the electric guitar (his teacher was none other than lou reed).

imagine a mix of sky saxon (of seeds fame) with a dash of roky erickson thrown in on vocals, a little bit of the cramps' scary monster dramatics thrown in for good measure & the swamp chugalug laziness of vintage pussy galore and you get an idea what flynt was up to at this phase in his non-career. features legendary sculptor walter de maria on drums, confirming our hidden suspicion that in every great artist there's a desire to rock & beneath every fine gallery, there is a basement. photos by george maciunas.

...

although native north carolinian cum downtown new yorker henry flynt maintained associations with celebrity artist yoko ono, performed with john cale & lamonte young, sat in with the velvet underground and took part in numerous happenings throughout the 1960s, for some 30 years the violinist /guitarist /wild man vocalist feverishly produced and documented a perplexingly large body of work in relative obscurity. save for an art ghetto style cassette release by a german gallery in 1981, henry flynt's many-headed musical vison went largely unpublished until the 21st century set in.

he's made his mark with his brand of ecstatic north indian raga inspired minimalism on c tune (locust3), the full bodied experimentalism anthologized on raga electric (locust6) and the avante-hillbilly bumpkin fiddle joyride on the two volume back porch hillbilly blues volume 1 & 2 (locust 16 & 14), & last year's agro punk i don't wanna ? with his 1966 garage rock protest band, the insurrections (locust39). purified by the fire is the 6th in locust music's ongoing archival releases of henry's work.

the psychedelic sounds of musical pioneer henry flynt's drone works with collaborator c.c. hennix are quietly becoming the stuff of legend. over some 40 plus minutes, we are treated to a true tour de force that's part hindustani inflected musical miasma and part warped hillbilly vibrational swing that sways in and out of auditory focus. this is vertiginous music for the third ear.

matt bauder / jason ajemianobject 3” compact disc

  • normal (31:08)
locust press release...
two of the young lions on chicago’s new emerging scene of improvising musicians came together one starry night and cut a beautifully mellow duet for bowed bass and tenor saxophone on the back porch of their home. bauder and ajemian produced a wonderful, concentrated dirge with the soft rhythmic ambiance of crickets in the background. the first half of their single piece, "normal", is a composed long tone work. during the first half of their performance, two minidisks recorded each musician. while recorded, friends monitoring each minidisk track marked the recording and split up the long tones. 1?2 way through the piece, the minidiscs are put in playback on shuffle, while jason and matt continued playing on top of arbitrarily cut up and spliced tones.

collection of material from j.d. robb’s two folkways lps; “electronic music: from razor blades to moog” (1970) & “triptych & other electronic musical compositions” (1976). excellent, library-music feeling material, short pieces consisting of rhythmic etudes, scientific-discovery-lineage tone combinations, and a few instrumental studies (“les ondes martenot” is especially nice...) categorically awesome.

in 1941, at the age of 49, john donald robb walked away from a successful international law career, headed west, set up shop in albuquerque, new mexico and later founded the rio grande electronic music laboratory. robb dove head first into a career as a composer, ethnomusicologist and an early electronic music noodler whose bizarre & singular electronic music recordings are short on same old same old and long on quirky, propulsive beat audacity.this collection of vintage electronic experiments is a true pleasure to the inner sanctum of the outer ear. newly remastered compilation combining the best cuts from his two folkways lps with totally off the wall photos.

nice little ep single thing here, a precursor to mr. 9’s forthcoming us debut album on locust. had a lot of fun with the remix (esp. as joe and i use the same hardware sampler, taking all of the bite of constructing millions of programs in order to do the remix). bundy’s remix is very, very beautiful. and the original is a fine slice of contemporary electronic digital pop. very cool...

first up, is a new cd ep by no.9 (joe takayuki) featuring a fine cut, “where come from? and where to?” from his fortcoming debut full length, mushi-no-ne. no.9 is an unsung electropop mastermind from tokyo’s invigorating onkyo scene whose knack for melodic pop, jazz grooves and stuttering rhythms recall the cinedelic scores of umiliani, tv spy jazz & the wistful hooks of 60s pop. this ep features two generous remixes by boston’s hrvatski (aka keith fullerton whitman) & chicago’s ken (bundy k.) brown (directions in music, pullman). hrvatski locks “where come from” into a galactic rub a dub mix of typically high quality tom foolery & ken brown cuts the caffeine & checks in with a mellow hypnotic drifter’s soundtrack.

our fifth installment of our "met life" series of city field recordings and responses brings us a tongue firmly in cheek offering from the rapid cut up techniques of seattle's chris delaurenti. simply put, it’s a little exercise on waste and getting wasted. this field recording documents the removal of waste at a transfer station in seattle and the response rides the pun to its excessive extreme as delaurenti quickly becomes a participant in the flailing and drunken fanfare at a party, raising the ever important question "what on earth are we all doing!" no doubt, it's this style, edgy humor and raw guerrilla techniques that make delaurenti a sort of fellini of the audio underworld.

being an inspired excursion into the creases and folds of modern deltadelica and a loosely worn blues by four unaccompanied guitarists doing their thing and going it alone for a really long time.

a simple title with a simple idea, wooden guitar brings together some of our favorite guitarists for a fine tour de force of unaccompanied performances. germany's steffen basho-junghans, seattle's sir richard bishop (the sun city girls), japan's tetuzi akiyama and virginia's jack rose (pelt) give us a fresh look at a very old instrument with a handful of gloriously stretched out solo compositions in the spirit of the great takoma gatherings of years past. this edition is a hand pulled, embossed silkscreened package in a numbered edition of 1,000.

helvacioglu is a tremendous electronic music talent based in istanbul, turkey whose contribution to the “met life” series captures the energetic day to day activities of an istanbul market where one can hear the sounds of hawkers buying and selling things, children running about, traditional music in the distance, cell phones abuzz and get a feeling for the very texture of place. his response is like an enriched memory of that place that both musically retains much of that raw earth feeling one initially encounters but also elevates the source material into a highly rhythmic, infectious piece that transforms everyday voices into a rich, layered chorus.

keith fullerton whitmandartmouth street underpass (met life 1 / location sound series 1:1)” compact disc

  • dartmouth street underpass - 3pm - july 12th 2002 (18:21)
  • dartmouth street underpass - reply piece - 3pm - august 4th 2002 (17:53)
2003 release containing a raw field recording of a glass-walled tunnel (track 1), then a “composed” reply piece...

quite excited about this release, finally out (a little behind schedule) but otherwise perfect. many of you know i’m an avid field recordist (the volume of my personal field recordings archive might scare more than a few people). i’ve called boston my home for the last 10 years or so but have given little back (other than working a constant ministry to the boston ‘scene’ during my travels).

i discovered the dartmouth street underpass almost by mistake when i was in college, and vowed to someday return with proper documenting equipment to capture to mood and sound-space in digital. my approach was to camp out exactly hafway through the tunnel, armed only with a minidisc and soundman okm headphone mics, waiting for that special moment. and it came, 3 hours into the session, when a group of tough city kids, upon discovering the space, started clapping their hands and singing jefferson airplane’s ‘somebody to love’. strange enough in itself, resounding throughout the cave-like tunnel, very odd. when this was followed with a brief announcement echoing into a 15 minute buzz from the faulty wiring of the station’s pa system, i knew this was what i was waiting for...

and here it is, digitally transferred from minidisc to uncompressed 16bit-44.1k, slightly remastered here in the mathlab. the reply piece takes only the electronic buzz as its source, adding birdcalls from the reckankomplex porch live into the mix as i ‘performed’ it in the laptop one balmy august afternoon. a proper documentation from a time & place quite dear. enjoy...
locust press release...
with the release of dartmouth street underpass, keith fullerton whitman inaugurates our met life series. for his efforts, whitman sat in on the acoustic world of the tunnel that connects boston's back bay station to copley plaza under dartmouth street. the sounds are a combination of pumped in muzak, children's voices bouncing off the glass walls, the sudden rush of commuters, and the glorious, rumbling low end buzz and rattle of the train ushering in and out of the station. whitman electronically processed elements of the field recording on his porch and devised a brilliantly conceived thing of beauty that slowly and effortlessly unravels into an entrancing long form drone .dartmouth street underpass has been celebrated as "a work of beautiful transparency" (ken hollings, the wire), "an evocative, stand-alone work that gains resonance with repeated listens" (matt pierce, splendid e-zine),and "as monolithic and complex as a phil niblock piece." locust music continues its foray into the many sided head of henry jacobs with the rerelease of his coveted 1955 folkways debut. culled from hours and hours of bits from his weekly radio program "music & folklore" which originally aired on berkeley's once revolutionary kpfa radio station.

radio programme no. 1: henry jacobs' music & folklore is a stunningly surreal sonic goulash of brilliantly conceived, tight rhythmic loops & tape collages, ethnic and experimental musics, twisted satirical interviews with shorty petterstein (henry's beat hipster alter ego), phony academic authorities (the muttering jocko on raga and politics, imagined hebrew scholar sholem stein waxing bogus on the subject of calypso!) to berkeley field recordings of kay dunham (nephew of the legendary katherine dunham) and friends getting lost in an informal drumming session.

an essential document in the annals of early american oddball recordings.

allen ginsberg is probably one of the best known contemporary poets in recent history. he was born in 1926 in newark, nj and recieved his b.a. from columbia university in 1948.

like many other artists, ginsberg held a variety of odd jobs before becoming an established writer. his employment history includes work on various cargo ships, a spot welder, a dishwasher and he also worked as a night porter in denver. he has partcipated in numerous poetry readings, including the famous six gallery event that occured in san francisco.

in 1954, san francisco painter robert lavigne introduced his model and companion, peter orlovsky to ginsberg. soon after this first meeting, orlovsky and ginsberg became lovers and moved in together, defining their relationship as a marriage. despite periods of separation, this arrangement remained intact until ginsberg's death in april 1997.

ginsberg was the recipient of numerous honors and awards during his lifetime including: the woodbury poetry prize, a guggenheim fellowship, the national book award for poetry, nea grants and a lifetime ahievement award from the before columbus foundation.

in addition to the almost epic poem howl, ginsberg has authored numerous books, too voluminous to mention here. many of his writings were interpreted as contrevertial and even obscene. the reading of howl resulted in the arrest of lawrence ferlinghetti, the owner of city lights books, on obscenity charges. the authorities objected to ginsberg's openess concerning his homosexuality as well as the graphic sexual language. many of his other writings deal with subjects such as narcotics and the experiences on has while under their influence.

however, many other prominent writers, including jack keroauc, william carlos williams and kenneth rexroth, realized ginsbergs importance. ginsberg was greatly influenced by keroauc's spontaneous and carefree style and often worked in a "stream of consciousness" manner until he completed a work. ginsberg also once, influenced by williams, arranged some of his poems "according to how you'd break it up if you actually to talk it out" and the latter was greatly impressed by the feat.

like many of the writers of his period, ginsberg had a desire to attain the mystical. the metaphysical poets of the nineteenth century, including william blake, were perhaps his greatest influence. it was the desire to expand the mind and reach the spiritual that inspired ginsberg to experment with substances such as marijuana and benzedrine. he claimed that many of his writings, including howl were written while he was under the influence of drugs.

ginsberg's theme of politics was once described by rexroth as "an almost perfect fulfillment of the long, whitman, populist, social revolutionary tradition in american poetry". many of his writings contain a war motiff: subjects such as the nazi gas chambers and viet nam are the topic of many of his poems.

ginsberg is perhaps one of the most respected and revered beat writer's. his work is definitely worth a glance even if the writers of this period are of little interest to certain readers. after his recent death, city lights had a celebration of his work which included the playing of some of his taped readings.

ginsberg's writing has been compared to thoreau, emerson and whitman and has been said to contain "that old gnostic tradition".
