bravo last visible dog, well done. here is a six cd box set (priced for less that most labels’ triple-disc sets) containing side-length suite from pretty much a who’s who from within the universe the label documents (contemporary finnish bedroom psych, new zealand cassette culture, etc...) just perfect segments from all; outstanders include geoff’s piece (way to go geoff!), the keijo piece(s) (intruiged; need to learn more), and those of loren chasse and renato rinaldi. consider this the lexicon that will ultimately unlock the door(s) to myriad avenues of contemporary musical thought... pure magic.
last visible dog press release...
lvd's second compilation and spiritual successor to drunken fish's harmony of the spheres box (ep length submissions), but instead of 6 artists, there are now 31. the set features all exclusive material, and the total running time clocks in around 7 hours and 36 minutes. this compilation, like the first invisible pyramid comp (2003), finds its inspiration in the writings of loren eiseley (naturalist, anthropologist, and essayist); for whom an elegy to the first victims of the still-escalating wave of man-made mass extinction seemed appropriate. each artist has dedicated their track to a recently extinct species (with a short bio), and jeff knoch (urdog) has written a substantial essay to accompany the set.

following the wire's declaration of the 'new weird america' and more specifically pigeon-holing artists as remote as jack rose, the jewelled antler collective, matt valentine, six organs of admittance and who knows what else into a genre they termed 'outsider folk', there has been an ever rising tide of new players delving into the arena of instrumental acoustic guitar. yet in that pile-up, the work of one matthew de gennaro has been completely missed. a web search will turn up virtually nothing, and when he does turn up it is as a footnote in the new zealand scene where, paired with alastair galbraith, he turned out a highly experimental performance on the legendary corpus hermeticum label.

all that said, matt is obscure for no reason i can understand. humbled down is about as good as this sort of solo guitar thing gets, with its pastoral shades and imaginative playing that might remind a few of roy montgomery's elegant temple iv (kranky) and songs from the south island (drunken fish).

acoustic guitar exploration; expansive with plenty of space, but also multi-textured, allowing a seemingly traditional 'folk americana' sound to hybridize with drone in a way that seems natural and compelling.

here’s a disc by root don lonie for cash head clayton noone (“no one”), a split release with the digitalis industries label, with practically gushing liners from friend/associate campbell kneale. musically, this record offers a suite of concise flanged bedroom guitar & soul-baring vocal numbers, inhabiting a space between early flying saucer attack and (wait for it...) jandek. simplistic almost to a fault, but ultimately charming in its minimum of means and full-on soul-baring...
last visible dog press release...
“a blather of fuzz and strum, tapedeck meltdown, edits seemingly performed by snapping the tape in his teeth... i defy you to find anybody that gives less of a flying fuck than cja. or more for that matter. these sounds don’t demand attention so much as they demand to be lived through. this is real. i’m talking real in all its mundane, apoplectic, divinity. the pain, the love, the wonder, the near-religious might. sometimes wrathful, sometimes somnambulent, sometimes talkative, other times saturated in a well of its own disinterest.

these songs have a life of their own and they plead to be allowed to live it. these little magnetic mountains and polycarbonate stylus-files retaine their totemic status round here and, over the years, have contamed the cassettes next to it my drawer with a spreading bile that seems to lessen anything placed in its presence. they are cjas’ black-eyed offspring: hungry, runny-nosed, and whining for attention. just love them.” - campbell kneale, february 2005

clayton noone is yet another one of the key players in the post hcorp nz scene; going back as far or farther than birchville cat motel; but where others have focused on noisescape and drone, noone has always been more confrontational. my first introduction to his music was another cja release, the appropriately titled 'headache' (look out! soon to be rereleased on cpsip!) where sidelong slabs of feedback assaulted the listener from tape start to tape end. elsewhere noone has operated under the title of armpit and accomplished much in the junk-noise vein. most significant however are his double cd release 'the tank' on pink skulls and his new art-punk project (for lack of a better genre pigeon-hole), the futurians.

among all this mess is ironclad; perhaps the safest of all places to start. melodic and often quite subdued, this is like a pleasant, even personal sit-down with clayton before all the shit breaks loose. everything you know about noone and his various projects is here, just kept at bay enough for the thing to actually resemble music a bit. well, i guess wel all need an album that isn't completely out of its mind. this one is only half out of its mind and subsequently might not piss everyone off.

here's what digitalis has to say about the release: cja sceams, "i am a fucking monster." shout it from on high. cja's master opus, "ironclad," reaks of monstrous minimalist genius. these songs are unearthed from a secret place, within the depths of new zealand's green pastures and jagged mountains. this is music that was destroyed and pieced back together so that it can destroy you. "ironclad" is a monolith. hell, it caused cja to stop making solo records. it is that good. don't take it from me, take it from glenn donaldson: "i've already set all my electric guitars ablaze in tribute to cja."

this is one of the first releases by clayton noone to be available on cd in the us, alongside soft abuse's release of the futurians.

renato renaldihoarse frenzy” compact disc

  • (40:10)
one continuous 40-minute piece from renato rinaldi, previously known for his duo with giuseppi ielasi as “oreledigneur” (three records on bowindo, fringes, and fusetron.) a completely gorgeous mix of “concrète” atmospherics (each instrument was recorded in a different setting; bird & wind sounds mix with ringing telephones, etc...), minimal prepared/processed acoustic guitar playing, harmonium drones, and muttered vocals; all coming from a mind-set not too far from the jewelled antler universe (specifically the blithe sons.) awesome.
last visible dog press release...
renato rinaldi is hoarse frenzy.
giuseppi ielasi plays outdoor acoustic guitar in the first section.
manourin string trio plays harmonics on violin, viola and cello in the last section.
other instruments are acoustic and unplugged electric guitars, dulcimer, harmonium, organ, piano, objects, microphones and vocals.
often the tracks of each section are recorded in different places.

recorded during the summer of 2003 in oreno di vimercate, vienna and italy in various places very close to the slovenian border.
mixed in medves in october 2003.
thanks to giuseppi ielasi, daniela toneatto and all the medves people.
very special thanks to michael moser for his piano and house and to loris vescovo for his guitar.

“mass-market” reissue of a fantastic july 2003 cdr by antony milton, a highly prolific artist with scads of releases on his pseudo-arcana label as well as wire bridge, foxglove, pink skulls, humbug, apoplexy, and celebrate-psi-phenomenon. this disc is anthony working in “sound art” mode; some it sounds like a cassette-bound rafael toral, other recordings inhabit a distant morricone-esque space, while others still come across a tape-hiss laden “cinema pour l’oreille” of ghost-voices and scraped string noise. highly evocative...
last visible dog press release...
antony milton is one of the new important voices to appear from new zealand in the wake of the dead c and the mid-90's 'free noise' scene. milton is at all times an intelligent interpreter of what's come in the last two decades--this is after all the same islands that brought us xpressway records and the clean.

nether dawn is arguably milton's take on free noise, though it feels less abstract (and off-putting) than the likes of handful of dust and flies inside the sun, utilizing instead a warm, broken drone not unlike 'wreck small speakers on expensive stereos" (ajax); that is to say, this is a more mellow, intimate drone experience for one and guest. there may also be a hint of influence from finish collaborator uton (who is the modern master of shortwave-drone-bliss.)

"slow motion atmospheric improvised electric drone 'blues' recorded after midnight in the midst of winter. the nether dawn is the newest of antony milton's solo projects. electronics and field recordings (of rain swept streets) mix with 'gestural' instrumentation and amp rumble. evening music."

reissue of two late 90s albums by antony milton, both originally released as cassettes on wirebridge, then cdrs on pseudoarcana. these mostly consist of close-breath songs, often whispered in the same runaway tenor as david “michael” tibet. mic stands are kicked to produce kick drums, microphones are bitten to produce snares; it’s all perfectly laden with that “can’t do” spirit that makes most of the nz-scene so “real.”
last visible dog press release...
an essential cd for those into the outsider nz 'pop' scene--you know, the one that includes the likes of this kind of punishment, pin group, victor dimisich band/terminals, wreck small speakers on expensive stereos...in fact, if you know the xpressway sound (that label bruce russell ran back in the day) you should know what to expect here. that should translate for most of you as: really fucking great. buy now. add to cart. etc. but not everyone thinks like i do. milton's music comes just half a decade too late to be part of the classic xpressway sound, but it is totally there. in my world this is what pop music would sound like!

here's a short write-up from antony about the origins of sirens:

sirens was recorded in an old cobb-cottage on an orchard in central otago. i was working there and would record after picking and on rainy days (which were quite frequent that season). i spent most of my teenage years in central otago and had returned there because it loomed so large in my own personal mythology that it felt as though the place was somehow hardwired into my identity. despite all the rain central otago is renowned for being dry and hot. its like a mini arizona or something (i'm guessing having never been to arizona...)- a high plateau in amongst the mountains of the south island. the whole place is a golden colour from the tussoch, with turquoise blue rivers threading through rugged hills and weird rock formations like the bones of the land exposed.

at the time of recording sirens i had been living in christchuch, the largest city in the south island, playing and recording music, working for a potter. i'd also been reading too much and going to too many art galleries. i was ready for one of those hard swings back toward a kind of feral mysticism (a terrible pendulum to be caught up on) and that was one of the reasons why i had chosen to go work on the orchard. i cycled there with my 4 trk and violin in my pannier bags and my guitar on my back.

one (sunny) day-off i went for a bike ride away up into the hills. there had been an intense edge to the day from the moment i'd awoken. for some time i'd been trying to address the issue of 'faith', faith in self, faith in the appropriateness of unfolding reality- whatever... that day in the hills was one of only 2 times in my life that i have succeeded in 'surrendering to the moment' in anything even approaching a complete way. i stepped off my bike and walked without questioning wherever 'impulse' dictated. i climbed rocky bluffs crawled through thorny briars. the 1st thing i found was a hawk feather that had somehow imbedded itself to grow like a flower out of the dusty ground. the next thing i found was a ring of psilocybe mushrooms that i collected (but didn't consume..). it was very hot and the sun was glaring down. i was out there for hours and it was only when a hunter opened fire on me as i was crawling on hands and knees through a rosehip briar that i really came back to myself. he had thought that i was a (big..?) rabbit and got as much of a shock when i yelled out and stood up as i had when he started shooting at me. we were miles from anywhere and such a meeting was remarkably unlikely. after that i 'came back to myself' (got sane?) and climbed on my bike for a speedy descent back toward the orchard. when i got there i went straight into my room and recorded the trk 'i was almost killed'. so thats kind of the (psychogeographical) context for the sirens release. 'and where the coloured planes are rafts' was recorded a year or so later on stradbroke island in australia. a lot of that is about dreams of new zealand, but some of its about australia as well.

2003 release from celebrate psi phenomenon artist stephen clover; almost sticks out like a sore thumb from the c-psi-p pack for being quite hi-fi (in comparison at least.) most pieces here are concerned with very thoughtful processing of guitar sounds; there’s a very nice 11 minute invocation of fahey’s ghost via fingerpicked acoustic guitar over some mean low-end square waves (not unlike something jim o’rourke would have done a few years back), a few almost mille-plateaux-esque resonance studies, and a bit of prepared acoustic sound-gathering... not to mention the guitar-free pieces, which combine field recordings and found dialogue with musique concrète-lineage collage work. listens/reads more like a composers’ album than a collection of home-studio after-hours experiments, might be the one to start with if’n that’s your proclivity...
last visible dog press release...
while the post-corpus hermeticum sound may seem a different beast altogether than your copy of le jazz non, the change, with inspection, is at best superficial. minimalism and drone remain, but while 'maximalist' minimalism has dissapeared, minimalism itself remains with heavy sound sampling and warped (ie destroyed) electronics. seht is most certainly one of the newer generation to rise out of the ashes of hcorp, and much to his advantage, since the ensuing silence seems more his tool than the blare of guitar feedback. here a sensitive ear is lent to even the most mundane field recordings, yielding this recording, a mix of acoustic guitar improvisations, drone, field recordings and electronics.

full-on creep-out from smolken & co. (this time, “& co.” means jewelled antler mainstay glenn donaldson, aka the ivytree.)
last visible dog press release...
album released on cd by last visible dog. this is the first dead raven disc in a format other than cd-r. settings of poems by charles baudelaire, hilaire belloc, rainer maria rilke and a.a. milne, two instrumentals, and a taint meat cover. sevaral contributions by glenn donaldson.

smolken was born and raised in cracow, poland, where he absorbed peasant folk music, cabaret music and underground anti-communist sung poetry. his family was asked to leave the country for political reasons in 1986, and he eventually ended up in texas. he played death metal in high school, later dabbled in mediocre noise and miserably failed improv, and eventually formed dead raven choir in 1996. garlic yarg was a 2004 side project which recorded four albums of primitive improvised music. in august of 2004, after two cd releases and over twenty cd-rs, smolken decided he's accomplished whatever there was to accomplish in the field of creepy barbaric folk and abruptly ended all dead raven activity.

shuji inabathe rapture of being destroyed is the flipside of the misery of destruction” compact disc

  • (9 songs w/titles in kanji)
posessed/shamanic quiet/loud dynamism in the form of one-man-against-the-world folk music from this contemporary japanese artist. very much in the kazuki tomokawa mold, and like tomokawa, not understanding the words themselves does not hinder one in appreciating their meaning.
last visible dog press release...
“inaba is a folk-singer & guitarist from shimane prefecture, a mountainous region that borders hiuroshima in the southwest corner of japan. he sings mostly in his native tongue, but even without understanding the words, they form a kind of phonetic poetry in my head. i hear anger, sadness, & sometimes regret in his jagged melodies, but far from depressing. this is inspiring, cathartic. his acoustic guitar playing can be savage or tender, slow sparse notes & chords that can erupt in thorny jabs & whirlwind strums. inaba wisely builds his music up around silence & respects its purity. the results are not mere musical dynamics but something like a calm landscape punctuated by sudden bursts of thunder, a wave crashing on the shore, a gust of wind in the canopy.” - glenn donaldson, winter 2003
