call back the giantsthe marianne” long playing record

kye press release...
call back the giants 'the marianne' lp (kye 23)

kye is proud to present the long-awaited new lp by folkestone's call back the giants. 'the marianne' takes the questing, narrative themes last heard on 'the rising' lp (2011) and 'incidents of travel' ep (2012) and extrapolates them into a three-part conceptual odyssey. set aboard the cruise liner of the same name 'the marianne' charts the epic voyage of capt fletcher and his patrons as they passage across the "sour ocean", through a prism of supernature and on toward an uncertain end.

'the marianne' arrives in a full color high-gloss chloe mutter designed sleeve, on sea-foam green vinyl in an edition of 400 copies.

james rushford / joe taliamanhunter” long playing record

  • manhunter (1)

  • manhunter (2)
february 2013 release ; ... was blind-sided by this tribute to the titular michael mann movie (one of my all-time favorite films, incidentally) by two of the melbourne new music scene’s leading lights :: repertoire pianist (and recent dumitrescu / avram collaborator) james rushford and percussionist / recording engineer joe talia (both of which have taken recent turns in oren ambarchi’s increasingly divergent recording & performance projects ; the former in his more “chamber” oriented paths, the latter in the free-rock zones) ...

... given their respective cv’s, an lp offering two side-length explorations of electronic moods & decidedly lurid timbre is a bit of a curve-ball, yet nothing about this seems calculated, or even less than fully-formed ; it’s a head-scratchingly confounding record that sits perfectly at home with similar “deep listening” outings by fellow countryman astor, label-mate darksmith, and the like ... highly recommended !!!
kye press release...
james rushford & joe talia 'manhunter' lp (kye 22)

manhunter is the brand new lp by australia's james rushford and joe talia. the duo's previous work, palisades (2009) and paper fault line (2011), showcased a gestural and timbrally rich music, bristling with keen detail and sharp edits. manhunter stands in stark contrast - an ebbing two-part suite for waning greyscale electronics, dehumanized drum machine, amorphous vocal fragments, and sundry devices, woven together in a fabric of despair. the exquisite bleakness of manhunter ties it to la mutazione, abandoned cities, theme from hunger, and other great downer classics of yore.

manhunter arrives in a full-color high gloss michael salerno designed sleeve, with complimentary labels, in an edition of 400 copies.

october 2012 release ; ... immaculate collection of hitherto unreleased magic from the duo of percussionist darren harris & guitarist graham lambkin (later aided by electronicist tim goss) active for but a brief decade-long blip (1993-2003) ...

... hard to understate the sudden relevance of this music (which, you can’t argue, has been gaining in zeal, zeitgeist-like, across the board over the past year ... can’t even recall how many hushed, late-night conversations i’ve had w/ folks over their recent discovery of this particular canon) ; trapped in a high tower with neither the drug-addled wastoid-isms of their siltbreeze-era peers (preferring the “men of letters” spec to a crumbling, post royal trux one) nor an easily streamlined accessibility (in truth the two / three have gone to great lengths to obfuscate even the who / what / why / how of this music, choosing a path that is neither straight, nor narrow ... even clearly outlined with signage, or even a well-lit treadway) ...

... ultimately that, of course, is why this is all so special ; there’s literally nothing else on earth that sounds anything like it (and with a spec so individualized & brazen as to defy comparison / cloning attempts) ; while this isn’t exactly the rosetta stone of the band’s recorded oeuvre, it does offer a fly-on-the-wall’s vantage point of the key eras in their existence, dealing a könig’s lösegeld in alternate-realities & thumb-nosed parallels to their “studio” ... “work” ...

... comes in a big gatefold with tons of great photos & a nice big poster (that’s mms logistics officer geomul straitharn showing off his cloud-chamber bowls) ; needless to say, but this is one of the major archival projects of the year, with superbly remastered audio (thanks to the ever-on-it jason lescalleet) only serving to highlight the clarity of sound & vision offered herein ... highly recommended !!!
kye press release...

kye 21: the shadow ring 'remains unchanged' 2lp

remains unchanged is the long-time-coming archival overview of the shadow ring. spanning the full decade of their existence, remains unchanged offers an alternate account of the group's labor, told through 20 never-before-heard tracks. from the lumbering monotony of 1993's squawk with me, to the funereal glory of 2003's and what if, remains unchanged grants the listener rare access to the secret history of cheriton's greatest underground export.

mastered from the original tapes by jason lescalleet, remains unchanged arrives in a full color high gloss gatefold sleeve, with fold-out wall poster in an edition of 1000 copies.

  • fossils - wider knowledge of man i-iii
  • fossils - snared on broadway

  • darksmith - anything that makes a man happy
  • darksmith - operating chair & voice / out with the evening trash
september 2011 release ; ... a split release, offering a pair of pairs of lichen-coated, rusted-out electronics from fossils (a crossing of the high level bridge as recorded through the hole below the floormat of a 1986 datsun 300zx - oscillator goes up - car falls of bridge - slowly - goes underwater - drowns - extremely slowly - ... - ring-modulated tape loops as proof whole incident was in fact a fever-dream) & “tomdarksmith (hell freezes over - water set to boil - generators are started - thawing begins - apparitions are released - assorted biblical shamanry - mental wall of hysteresis converted from ethereal to actual by sublimation - break for lunch - cleanup - 6rpm dance party / digestion aid ... listen to the sound-sample for the last 4 of those things) ...

comes in a striking negative-space addled sleeve ; best work i’ve heard from either party yet ...
kye press release...
million year spree lp (kye 14)

million year spree is the first in an occasional series of shared lps where two like-minded souls meet under one umbrella. hamilton, ontario's fossils have long been the reigning kings of no-fi acoustic sewage, producing an endless stream of outstandingly dire handcut confusion. calfornia's darksmith came to public attention last year via their peerless total vacuum lp (hanson). wilting electronics, floppy turntableism and sun-baked cassette protocol are combined and destroyed in a claustrophobic void. with additional mixing by graham lambkin and mastering by jason lescalleet million year spree is the last word on being and nothingness.

hand-numbered edition of 400.

moniek dargesounds of sacred places” compact disc

  • turkish square (9:12)
  • abbey sounds (12:23)
  • rain (7:08)
  • solstice sun (10:29)
  • three sunbeams (5:49)
september 2011 release ; ... remastered digital issue of perhaps moniek’s defining 1987 lp (originally issued on the storied brussels-based igloo imprint) ...

... five pieces recorded throughout the early & mid-80’s :: “turkish square(“soundscapes, voices, violin, n-dimensional oscillator system”) works a slowly morphing / heterodyning electronic pulse (ala roland kayn) under street-captures & sound-events in ghent ... “abbey sounds” is a collage-piece weaving location recordings & reflections on st. bavo abbey in ghent by david moss, john king, charlie morrow, guy de bievre, and others ... “rain(“voice amplified by larynx-microphone, soundscape of rain”) beats mama bär at her own game by about 25 years, with a dense layering of poly-rhythmic rain clicks & orgiastic / orgasmic inner-throat moaning(s) ... “solstice sun” is a superb musique concrète treatment of not just the klang of the “roland bell,” but it’s wooden arch-supports & surrounding mechanisms (listen to the sound-sample for a taste) ... finally, “three sunbeams” fixes contact-mic’s to the bodies of a series of nine bells, which are “gently stroked by mallets with a steady beat” creating a newring tone” ...

... an incredible disc ; if you’ve been taken with moniek’s more contemporary work (as heard via the two other discs on kye, both excellent) then you’ll find much to love herein ... highly recommended !!!

moniek darge 'sounds of sacred places' cd (kye 13)

new 2011 edition of this cornerstone sound art collection, originally published in 1987 on lp by igloo.

in most ethnic cultures, sacred places serve an important social function. the qualities, typical of these places, explain to western people the magic magnetism of these "holy grounds". during our international logos duo concert tours we have had the opportunity to visit quite a few of these places. uluru, the "shadowgiving mountain" of the aborigines, better known under its western name of ayers rock (australia), impressed us more than any other. the presence of water and an enormous monolith in the midst of the vast desert plain is given as an explanation for its magical appeal. but to the aborigines, each little place of the rock contains tracks of their ancestors, the "dreamtime people", who live in this mountain and speak to them in the sounds of the winds howling through the crevasses and rockholes. uluru is also the dwelling-place of the "world serpent", the most powerful totem shared by the surrounding tribes. sounds of sacred places attempts to transform the listener into a living witness of the sounds of similar places, not far away in any specific ethnic culture, but in flanders.

(moniek darge, 1987).

sounds of sacred places arrives in a high gloss 4-panel digipak with accompanying 16 page booklet of photos and notes. remastered from the original tapes by moniek darge at the logos foundation, gent.

edition of 500.

moniek dargecrete soundies” compact disc

  • magnesia (20:03) 2006
  • anemos (19:58) 2007
  • east crete (20:00) 2008-2009
april 2010 release ; second title in this (hopefully un-ending) series covering the work of belgian sound-artist / composer moniek darge ...

crete soundies” consists of three musique concrète pieces, constructed from materials gathered in the titular locale, constructed with a remarkable sense of musical logic while preserving the natural flow of recorded events ; i’m reminded a little bit of luc ferrari’s 70’spresque rien” work, but also such site-specific / cavernous works at françois bayle’s “jeïta” & some of annea lockwood’s recent “sound map” pieces ... yet retaining darge’s uniquely-hewn style (there’s a fine coat of tape-hiss & lo-fi gloss permeating the events throughout ; lends something of a “historical” lens to the proceedings) ...

comes in a glossy, highly-detailed digipack with liners and tons of crisp photos linking sounds to place ; highly recommended !!!
kye press release...

kye is pleased to announce the release of crete soundies, the major new work by moniek darge, and the follow-up to last years soundies (1980-2001) cd. crete soundies presents three new pieces - magnesia (2006), anemos (2007) and east crete (2008-2009). these works were born from two years of levka ori sound research, and an additional year in east crete in collaboration with fellow sound artist francoise vanhecke.

moniek darge was born in bruges, 1952 and studied music theory and violin at the music conservatory of bruges, painting at the ghent royal academy of fine arts; art history, philosophy and anthropology at the university of ghent, belgium. she is active as composer, violinist, performer and audio artist and has built light and soundsculptures, installations, musical instruments and for many years has been constructing a series of alternative music boxes, with which she also performs. darge has specialised in both soundscapes and live-art performances in which visual and musical aspects are combined and in interactional improvisation on violin. since 1970 she has performed around the world and has been active on stage, first with the logos ensemble, then with logos duo (together with godfired-willem raes), and more recently with the m&m robot ensemble. she also founded logos women, a small group specialised in intermedia improvisations performing their own compositions for various instruments, voices and music boxes.

she's often invited by international artists to collaboration. in 1986 the third program of the national belgian radio broadcasted a series of programs about her concerts and performances in new york city and about some artists with whom she collaborated there. a similar program was made about her music experiences in kenya and rwanda. and later on also about japan, china, bresil, australia, new zealand etc. she herself also realised radio programs about women artists over the world. in 1997 she received the title of cultural embassador of flanders for the logos duo. moniek darge published several journalistic and literary essays, amongst which "inter media myths, auto-author" (1986), an art edition, combining poetry, drawings, scores and pictures (toronto, art metropole-catalogue no.12) and the book "lijf tegen lijf" (body against body, kritak, leuven, 1982). she's general editor of the 'logos-blad', the monthly magazine of the logos foundation, which appears already during more than 30 years and in which she also tells her international music travel experiences. many international magazines published her articles. besides her many concerts and performances all over the world and besides her activities as organiser, moniek darge is assistant professor at the "hogeschool gent" where she teaches 20th century art history, audio art and non western art studies at the fine arts department and an introductionary course in ethnomusicology at the music department.

crete soundies comes housed in 6-panel digipak, in an edition of 500, and is released with the support of the flemish government.

  • caete (6:11) 1997
  • verbondenheid (11:48) 1999
  • turning wheel (8:53) 2001
october 2009 release ; wonderful collection of mid-period sound-art pieces from the logos foundation’s moniek darge (often mentioned alongside her partner-in-crime godfried willem-raes) - the first new issue of her work since the 1995 experimental intermedia (xi records)logos works” disc ...

... starting with the electronic drone & punctual, pointillist percussion of 1981’ssand(erupting into a terrifying fury of howls & screams just when you get in the “zone”) & continuing on through “stormfugle’s” low-end hiss & errant electronics, “fairy tale’s” vocal pips & scratchy violin ... even the relatively contemporaryturning wheel’s” in-transit interplay (which sounds remarkably like something komissar & mama would do, btw) it becomes clearer & clearer that ms. darge has been on the true path lo these past 30+ years, wading not in the traditional sound-art or electro-acoustic compositional waters, but inhabiting some nether-region grounded in happenings, self-built / experimental instrument culture, and site-specific performance scenarios that are squarely hers & hers alone ...

excellent, essential work & telling as the first non-graham lambkin / shadow ring-related release on graham’s young kye imprint (who promises a series of releases by moniek in the near-future ; joy !!!) ; highly recommended !!!
kye press release...

moniek darge soundies (selected work 1980-2001) (kye 05)

moniek darge has been active as a composer, violinist, performer and audio artist since the early 70s. she is most widely recognized as one half of the pioneering new music group logos duo alongside her partner godfried-willem raes. the logos duo, which operates under the umbrella of the logos foundation, have been celebrated both at home in their native gent, belgium and on the international stage. they have performed their work in countries as diverse as brazil, new zealand, japan and the us. however, moniek's solo work has been harder to locate, the last published collection being sounds of sacred places (igloo records, 1987).

soundies is the first in a series of releases from kye that aims to bring moniek's solo material before a wider audience. soundies contains the following work: sand (1980) - for two percussionists with tape (electronics) and one participant from the audience / stormfugle (1981) - for two performers, voice, tape (electronics and voice), slides, film, clarinet and violin / fairy tale (1983) - for vocals, violin and tape (koala sounds and dog-growling) / harpje (1995) - for harp samples and performance / caete (1997) - for soundscapes, live musical objects and duo / verbondenheid (1999) - for voices, turkish turtle and live musicians / turning wheel (2001) - for voice, live violin and soundscape.

comes in an attractive 4-panel digipak graced with original art by moniek.
