z'ev - outwaard
korm plastics kp 3031
cd only - limited edition of 300 copies

for close to forty years z'ev has been at the absolute fore front of new musics. playing his unique brand of percussive music he gained a lot of attention, but in more recent years he returned to working with electro-acoustic manipulations.

since 2003 he has also begun a wide ranging series of collaborations, working with francisco lopez, stephen o'malley, david jackman / organum and oren ambarchi among others. one such ongoing collaboration is with frans de waard, with whom he released 'forwaard' in april 2007 and 'outwaard' is the next installment. whereas the sound sources used on 'forwaard' where of a varying nature, on 'outwaard' they were all made at a petting zoo in kleve, germany. these recordings which are 'recoded' by z'ev into a forty minute, densely layered pattern of musique concrete. many of the animal call like sounds disappear in the 'recoded' version and makes a particular strong work, but occasionally one returns and leaves a no less than haunting listening experience.

the cover contains field photography frans de waard and was designed by meeuw muzak. it comes in the 15x15 cm cover that korm plastics has used before.

jon mueller & martijn tellinga - brombron 13
korm plastics kp 3028
minicd only

korm plastics is proud to present the eleventh release in the brombron series. originally a co-production between staalplaat and extrapool, it is now hosted by co-curator frans de waard. in the year 2000 frans de waard and extrapool started the brombron project. two or more musicians become artists in residence in extrapool, an arts initiative in nijmegen, the netherlands, with a fully equipped sound recording studio. these artists can work in a certain amount of time on a collaborative project; a project they always wished to do, but didn't have the time or the equipment to realize.

jon mueller and martijn tellinga have started a collaboration to explore the musical dialogue between the instrumentalist and realtime computer-performer. their mutual interest in the outlining and structuring of improvisation, both in sonic properties and compositional shape, resulted in an ensembled playing that is partly responsive, partly autonomous.

during their residency at the extrapool studio in nijmegen, netherlands december 2005. during this residency they experimented with a system that consisted of live-sampling and processing of jon's playing, on top of a layer of pre-recorded soundmaterials taken from a previous session. crucial to this system, was that the actual triggering of the samples and processing in the computer during performance was also caused by that same playing; i.e., while jon was improvising he not only provided new sonic material for recording, but also triggered previously recorded events. the realtime manipulation and transformation of these events was done by martijn following that same structural order. this experimental system was developed to get to a musical body that can either blend into one (percussion and computer) or exist as two entities that function in an autonomous way (bypassing the triggering and playing the computer as a stand-alone instrument, using the same set of soundmaterials) and perform by listening and responding to each others input. this can be seen as an attempt to get beyond the many electro-instrumental collaborations where the computer-performer seems to function as a huge effect-processor of the instrumental input, and by doing that, reduces the instrumentalist to a soundsource for realtime processing.

jon mueller has been an active drummer and percussionist since the early 90s. whether utilizing bombastic minimalism, dense interplay, or electroacoustic practices, his approach focuses on a physical dialog between situation and material. he has been featured on numerous recordings and has performed throughout the u.s., japan, and the netherlands. he has performed/recorded with: aranos, keith berry, jarboe, tetuzi akiyama, jason kahn, asmus tietchens, jack wright, carol genetti, collections of colonies of bees, tatsuya nakatani, hal rammel, steve nelson-raney, jim schoenecker, bhob rainey, glenn kotche, pele, steven hess, werner moebius, lionel marchetti, adam sonderberg, tim catlin, matt turner, achim wollscheid, fred lonberg-holm's lightbox orchestra and others.

martijn tellinga (1974, netherlands) is a composer and sound-artist in the field of new electroacoustic music and sonic arts. his work shows a great care for textural qualities and eye for compositoric detail and seeks its identity somewhere in the overlap of formalized form and intuitive musicmaking. more than relying on melody, harmony and rhythm, these works are constructed from the fundamental building blocks of music: timbre, texture, volume and time-elapse. tellinga composes for quadraphonic- and multichannel environments, exploring both sonic directionality as well as spatial characteristics of the physical setting the work is performed in. currently he is pursuing a master's degree in sonology at the royal conservatory the hague - netherlands, studying with paul berg and kees tazelaar.

in the past years his work has been performed and exhibited at numerous occasions inthe netherlands and international festivals in belgium, france, germany, finland, uk, austria, swiss, italy, portugal, greece and usa. works have been commisioned by labels such as - korm plastics - (hol), - spekk - (japan), - cronica electronica - (portugal) and - stichting mixer - (hol).

tellinga has collaborated with several filmmakers, video-artists and autonome artists, providing soundtracks for animated - and short films and developing installation-like media environments. he has worked with a.o. finnish filmmaker and journalist sami kallinen, autonome artists jan robert leegte and sagi groner and is currently developing an integrated audio-visual performance with austrian video-artist dextro.

his ongoing project 'boca raton' particularly deals with the synthesis between concrete -unstaged- sound and synthetic sonorities. as it has never shown any steady state what-so-ever, the project develops over time according to the composer's ideas and capacities, within the flexibalised margins of this field of interest. together with dutch composers radboud mens and danny de graan he forms 'elmgar ten', building soundinstalltions functioning as performance-tools. furthermore he has recently started an electro-instrumental collaboration with percussionist jon mueller, to explore the musical dialogue between the instrumentalist and realtime computer-instruments.

in 1999 he started the platform for contemporary electro-acoustic music stichting mixer, having organised numerous events and released over 25 titles today. finally, he is programmer for the dutch new music radiostation 'de concertzender', being one of the 4 programmers for '230 volt', a weekly program focussing on historic and contemporary electro-acoustic music.

korm plastics is proud to present the eleventh release in the brombron series. originally a co-production between staalplaat and extrapool, it is now hosted by co-curator frans de waard. in the year 2000 frans de waard and extrapool started the brombron project. two or more musicians become artists in residence in extrapool, an arts initiative in nijmegen, the netherlands, with a fully equipped sound recording studio. these artists can work in a certain amount of time on a collaborative project; a project they always wished to do, but didn't have the time or the equipment to realize.

for this twelfth installment all the machines were switched off, microphones installed and duets for two acoustic guitars were recorded by tetuzi akiyama and greg malcolm. improvising along the way, along set theme's as well as new ones, they have come up with the most unlikely release in the brombron series thus far.

greg malcolm is an extraordinary guitarist from new zealand who has played everywhere on the globe and with all most everyone, including rosy parlane, toshimaru nakamura, tetuzi akiyama and bruce russell, as well as solo releases on his own label, corpus hermeticum, kraak and celebrate psi phenomenon

tetuzi akiyama plays the guitar with primitive and practical implications, by adding a desire of his own to the instrument's characteristic nature in minimal and straight method. he delicately and sometimes boldly controls the volume of the sound from micro to macro level, and tries to quantize his physical system.

bringing audiotoop back home. that is what this book is about. audiotoop is not 'just' a live event, held in a particular place at a given time. that's only one half of the story. the book is the other half. as much as audiotoop is not a radioplay, it's not 'just' an event either. audiotoop is like a biotop: it's an environment, completly packed with colours, sounds, people, and installations full of possibillities. that makes up the story that is brought to you.

right from the start, early 2005, audiotoop is a live event with radioplays, closely-linked artforms and a cd/book. early 2005 we invited various artists to present some form of radioplay, to be brought in a live context. how this is to be done, is up to the artists, but the visual element is to be reduced, not to be ignored.

on a given night, we see for instance a table filled with turntables, childrens toys, flutes, violin, drums, effects. or the findings of a scrap yard. people dressed up like english teachers. for instance. all to make the illusive sounds to create a world around the story. one or more persons sitting behind and telling a story, because it's the story that matters. sometimes the audience plays the (in-)voluntary role, taking part in a never practised dramatic murder play. sometimes the stories are illuminated by singing, drawings or simply a powerpoint presentation.

to expand on the idea of stories, several installations were presented, such as the abstract band of freek lomme: 'bass, bass, drums, bass, guitar, bass'. perhaps without the involvement of any living person, such as the mummified drums, complete with dancing nails and hair, as presented by quinten dierick. extrapool becoming the biotop of audiotoop when it all turned black and white, complete with noise and fluorescent paint.

all gone and not to be repeated. the book is the same biotop: it presents an environment of it's own. with it's studioversions, live registrations and especially designed artworks and texts. a big 'thanks' to everyone who participated and for now: open the environment, step in and enjoy.

this book (17x19 cm) has 28 pages, printed in full color by knust, of texts and collages by the various artists. the cd has eleven tracks by jana & bertin, jan schellink, the bohman brothers, freek lomme & remco van bladel, quinten dierick, jorg piringer & elffriede, jeroen kuster, lem & lemoineau, marten de wind & tamar frank and vernon & burns.

texts in english, german and dutch and sometimes even no text.

korm plastics is proud to present the eleventh release in the brombron series. originally a co-production between staalplaat and extrapool, it is now hosted by co-curator frans de waard. in the year 2000 frans de waard and extrapool started the brombron project. two or more musicians become artists in residence in extrapool, an arts initiative in nijmegen, the netherlands, with a fully equipped sound recording studio. these artists can work in a certain amount of time on a collaborative project; a project they always wished to do, but didn't have the time or the equipment to realize. since 2002 worm, a rotterdam based music organisation, is also taking part in brombron and this new release is the first to emerge out of their studios.

many years ago, felix kubins uncle walter knoth was looking for a composer to musically illustrate some of his old- fashioned brilliant schlager texts. naturally, his first choice was his own nephew felix - but obviously this young guy did not have the versatile qualities to manage such a thing on his own.

walter placed some big advertisements in all the important german music mags. after a long period of auditioning madonna- lookalikes, wanna-be-genesis-p-orridges and bearded kraut rock acidheads, dutch pop mogul frans de waard showed interest and decided to take the rotterdam group coolhaven into the boat - an ecclectonoclast trio consisting of dorn, fregge and guy simons. this menage-- quatre was supposed to record another top-selling album for de waards brombron series.

due to budget reasons the musicians were only given a period of one week to work on their songs in a dirty old studio in rotterdam (studio l6s - for all your special projects). nevertheless, the hyperactive quartett managed to record about 18 hours of rough material which was finally melted down to 42 minutes of sheer brilliance. under the influence of strange instruments, dusty corners and atmospheric pain, the recording resulted in a fruitful mixture of german weirde welle optagonism, conservative hiphop, stockhausen schlger, no improv mixing and gabberpop. the mixing was done in long sessions (the longest being 36 hours) where everybody could have his say. thats why it took 18 months to release the bitch. but here she is; suppe fr die nacht. have some. and don't ask questions.

korm plastics kp 2024

korm plastics is proud to present the ninth release in the brombron series. originally a co-production between staalplaat and extrapool, it is now hosted by co-curator frans de waard. in the year 2000 frans de waard and extrapool started the brombron project. two or more musicians become artists in residence in extrapool, an arts initiative in nijmegen, the netherlands, with a fully equipped sound recording studio. these artists can work in a certain amount of time on a collaborative project; a project they always wished to do, but didn't have the time or the equipment to realize.

colley and lescalleet had never met before their grey week in nijmegen. though neither of these melancholic composers were prepared for the conflicts and compromise of this collaboration, they found common ground in rejecting the need for deep meaning or complex concepts.

46 minutes remain after harsh judgement from two perpetually dissatisfied artists.

but what does it sound like?

amidst the detritus of yard sale junk and old, broken equipment, colley and lescalleet engage in the pursuit of resurrecting the essence of sound and exposing beauty that others discard. locked away in the recording studio of geluidwerkplaats extrapool for ten days, they found music in the natural process of decay. these compositions seem weathered and eroded. rather than aiming for excitement or dazzling expression, colley and lescalleet embrace the tedium of everyday life as something beautiful and compelling. this is music with a slow absorption rate and a high toxicity.

korm plastics is proud to present the eigth release in the brombron series. originally a co-production between staalplaat and extrapool, it is now hosted by co-curator frans de waard. in the year 2000 frans de waard and extrapool started the brombron project. two or more musicians become artists in residence in extrapool, an arts initiative in nijmegen, the netherlands, with a fully equipped sound recording studio. these artists can work in a certain amount of time on a collaborative project; a project they always wished to do, but didn't have the time or the equipment to realize.

"i was introduced to giuseppe ielasi over email in 1999 or 2000 (i don't remember presicely), by a guy who ran a music magazine in italy called blowup. he was writing about cds on my label, intransitive, and suggested that i get in contact with his friend giuseppe, who was starting a label called fringes in milan. giuseppe and i exchanged some cds of our music, corresponded for awhile, and discovered that we had much in common.

giuseppe came to the us to promote his "right after" album with domenico sciajno, and we got along immediately. we're about the same age, have a similar temperament, play a similar sort of music, are from a similar kind of background, are excited about records, we love to eat, we're both kinda nerdy... yeah, giuseppe is my kind of guy! we had spoken about collaborating at a few points over the years, but somehow it just never happened, probably because we're so busy with our various projects and labels. so when i was offered a brombron residency, i thought it would a perfect opportunity to spend some time hanging out and playing music with giuseppe.

the method we chose was to first proceed to the closest coffee shop for a breakfast of cheese and meat sandwiches (me) and cookies (giuseppe), then we'd record improvisations for a few hours until lunchtime. i primarily used cassette tapes and giuseppe used a guitar, but we also both played synths and electronic doodads and microphones, and i made some tape recordings around the city that i brought back in to our improvisations. our minds were open, and we experimented without deciding in advance what sort of album we might be making. we'd then take a long walk, go to the nijmegen record shops (where plurex records are still cheap!), have some lunch, maybe also a snack, and then start to edit out the good bits from the morning. we'd also add some effects and change some parts, use the recordings as source material in a small way. then we'd return to the record shops to buy the records we hesitated on in the afternoon, have some dinner and relax. the next day, we'd wake up, have coffee, and do it again. our pace of working and comfort matched quite well. for the final few days of the residency, we started to piece together our bits until they worked as compositions. then we edited some more until the album emerged.

about the title.... we gave a duo concert at extrapool as part of the requirements of our residency. there was an art opening happening at the same time, so the gallery was packed with people. it was a lot of fun, but it also made us both feel a bit strange; we're somewhat awkward in social situations, and didn't know anyone at the extrapool party except for frans and roel meelkop, who drove out from rotterdam. after our set, we split to go get more fried dutch snacks. along the walk, we talked about how we used to go out to parties more often when we were younger, but now we aren't even so old and we generally enjoy staying at home where it's quiet, listening to records and reading. giuseppe was reminded on the song by arthur russell, "losing my taste for the nightlife". maybe we are. or, maybe that's just how we felt on that evening. it doesn't matter, really, i suppose.

ralf wehowsky/johannes frisch tränende würger
kp 3021 - full length cd

1) johannes frisch
works since the late 1970s as a performer, composer and improviser of contemporary music between experimental rock, free jazz and other openminded styles. on his main instrument, the double bass, he works for more than three decades consequently on an individual expressive language. he played with lot of musicians of the international scene of free improvisation and all experimental fields - among others lol coxhill, maggie nicols, johannes bauer, le quan ninh, paul hubweber, michael vorfeld, misha feigin . compositions for theatre, film and dance theater actual projects: kammerflimmer kollektief; home of the beast, with peter hollinger und helmut bieler-wendt; ensemble sondarc, music for six double basses; rat'n'x; trio with paul wirkus & mikolaj trzaska;. concerts & festivals all over europe.

2) ralf wehowsky
founded the group p.d. (in 1981 renamed p16.d4) and the label wahrnehmungen (in 1982 renamed selektion) in 1980. p16.d4 were one of the most influential groups of experimental industrial music. they developed concepts of materialaustausch long before the term remix was even coined. for their live appearances they were equally at home at punk and no wave festivals as at the holy grails of academic avantgarde like the ferientage neuer musik, darmstadt. since the early 90s wehowsky worked under his own name (rlw). the quiet, highly complex style of composition, based on artifacts of instrumental and electronic lateral noises, evolving out of his collaboration with bernhard gnter was influential for numerous artists in the fields of electronic and improvised music. some reflections on his work can be found on tulpas, a 5cd- box-set, featuring more than 50 artists performing their versions of rlw pieces (incl. jim o rourke, brume, achim wollscheid, toshiya tsunoda, john duncan, antanas jasenka, ryoji ikeda, john watermann a.o.). the new decennium started with a surprise for many as first releases showed a new approach of integrating improvised music and composition (as can be found on the cds views and sights, the latter w/ long-time collaborator bruce russell).

3) tränende würger
is based on free improvisations by the frisch/wehowsky duo, reworked with electro-acoustic means. the compositional process did not intend to mask the nonlinear nature of the improvisations. quite on the contrary their organic character has been emphasized by crystal- clear sharpening of details. you ll find complex structures and dark atmospheres, not unlike those on some p16.d4-, this heat- or mnemonists- releases, though absolutely rooted in the 21st century. beauty and posoning are not far from each other.

'tränende würger' comes in a plastic bag, 15x15cm with the artwork on six seperate sheets, dealing with poisenious plants.
design by meeuw.

full length cd

the thirteenth installment in this series is the first full length cd in this series, being a split by richard chartier and boca raton. their approaches to sound are similar, so it would be a good idea to combine them on a split release.

richard chartier (b.1971),
sound/installation artist and graphic designer, has created critically acclaimed recordings for labels such as 12k/line (usa), trente oiseaux (germany), spekk (japan), mutek_rec (canada), and fallt (ireland), including collaborations with artists taylor deupree, william basinski, coh, and *0 and has appeared on numerous international compilations. his digital minimalist work explores the inter- relationships between the spatial nature of sound, silence, focus, and the act of listening.

chartier's sound works and sound installations have been presented internationally including at the exhibits sounding spaces at icc (tokyo, japan), i moderni / the moderns at castello di rivoli (torino, italy), 2002 biennial at the whitney museum of american art (ny), resynthesis at the art institute of chicago and with the travelling sound exhibit invisible cities created by digital media curators fehler as well as solo and collaborative installations for fusebox (dc) and diapason (ny). he has performed his work live across europe, japan, and north america at mutek (montreal, canada), deaf (dublin, ireland), observatori (valencia, spain), transmediale (berlin, germany), lovebytes (sheffield, uk), the leeds international film festival (leeds,uk), the rotterdam international film festival (ne), garage (stralsund, germany) and other noted digital art/music festivals and at exhibits such as frequenzen [hz] at the schirn kunsthalle (frankfurt) and a minimal future? art as object 1958-1968 at the museum of contemporary art (los angeles). the conceptual performance piece chessmachine, a multimedia collaborative work by chartier, ivan pavlov and video/installation artists evelyn domnitch and dmitry gelfand recently premiered at the opening event of the 2004 mutek festival.

in 2000 he formed the recording label line and has since curated its continuing documentation of compositional and installation work by international sound artists and composers exploring the aesthetics of contemporary and digital minimalism. the premiere release on line, chartier's series as awarded honorable mention in the category of digital music by the prestigious prix ars electronica, 2001 (austria).

boca raton is an ongoing musical project started by martijn tellinga (1974, amsterdam, netherlands) in 1999. it hovers at the edges of synthesized and concrete-acoustic soundworlds. the abstraction, or rather reflection, of concrete sources through electronic synthesis and manipulation creates an alias in sound which shares the associative and narrative character of the everyday soundtrack that surrounds us. by using elements of both worlds, its musical form shows the integration and co-existence of natural - unstaged - sound and its artificially created reflection.

more than relying on melody, harmony and rhythm, these soundworks are constructed from the fundamental building blocks of music: texture, volume and time-elapse. a composition is made by arranging and re- arranging elements, magnifying their charac-teristics, outlinening tendency and by emphasizing the intrinsic value of the material. as well as displaying an autonomously excisting sonic object, these environments are as much a carrier for the compositional form and musical gesture.

the first solo-works of martijn tellinga have recently been commisioned by labels such as spekk - (japan) and absurd - (greek). since september 2003, he has been studying sonology at the royal conservatory the hague, netherlands. in 1999 he started the platform for contemporary electro-acoustic music stichting mixer, having organised numerous events and released over 25 titles today.

kodi & pausa - brombron 07: in one week and new toys to play

korm plastics kp 3018

korm plastics is proud to present the seventh release in the brombron series. originally a co-production between staalplaat and extrapool, it is now hosted by co-curator frans de waard. in the year 2000 frans de waard and extrapool started the brombron project. two or more musicians become artists in residence in extrapool, an arts initiative in nijmegen, the netherlands, with a fully equipped sound recording studio. these artists can work in a certain amount of time on a collaborative project; a project they always wished to do, but didn't have the time or the equipment to realize.

natalie bruys (kodi) is foremost a visual artist who studied at de rietveld academie in amsterdam, where she graduated with the production of a vinyl record with her own music. she then moved temporarily to berlin where she continued to produce her own unique blend of soundscaping, plunderphonica and techno.

lukas simonis (aka pausa) has his roots as an instrumentalist and musical 'activist' in the industrial music and noise rock of the eighties ( throbbing gristle, the residents, pere ubu, sonic youth and beyond). being a part of the rotterdam jazzbunker scene (a collective that consisted of heavy drug induced punk rockers, freejazzers, early electronic musicians and pre-postrock combo's) he discovered the delimited world of improvisation. in the meantime he played in bands like dull schicksal, trespassers w and morzelpronk. at the same time he was writing for underground magazines like trespassers w, opscene, mondain den haag and the koekrandt as well as organizing concerts, events and films, first at the jazzbunker in rotterdam later on the dissonanten festival, the dissidenten festival, popifilm, dodorama and finally worm, a multimedia centre for experimental art. at the moment simonis plays in coolhaven (with peter fengler and hajo doorn), liana flu winks (with nina hitz and wilf plum), apricotmylady (with the bohman brothers and ann laberge), the static tics (with henk bakker) and vril (with chris cutler and bob drake). this sounds like a lot of work (and sometimes it is) but these bands and projects all exist only a few weeks or months a year. (so time enough to sit at home).

on 'in one week and new toys to play' kodi & pausa combine their totally different background of rock and techno, playing the studio's analogue synth collection (aka the new toys to play) but also guitar, banjo, rhythmbox and a touch of the city's sounds through their use of field recordings.

frank bretschneider/peter duimelinks - brombron 10: fflux

korm plastics is proud to present the tenth release in the brombron series. originally a co-production between staalplaat and extrapool, it is now hosted by co-curator frans de waard. in the year 2000 frans de waard and extrapool started the brombron project. two or more musicians become artists in residence in extrapool, an arts initiative in nijmegen, the netherlands, with a fully equipped sound recording studio. these artists can work in a certain amount of time on a collaborative project; a project they always wished to do, but didn't have the time or the equipment to realize.

frank bretschneider is one of the vital producers in the global electronic network. a member of the raster-noton collective, he also has releases under the names komet and produkt. bretschneider has created some spacial electronics of the late 90's and 00's, unlike so much output in the microscopic music scene, his music has always flourished with activity. precise sound placement, volume levels and the contrast of tones in bretschneider's production makes his compositions captivating. bretschneider goes beyond the plug-in or plug research electronics. he redefins the genre by rendering the parameters playable, reentering the musical domain with unprecedented ease. bretschneider discovers the complexity of the virtual: microtonality, clicks, complex rhythm textures, melodic fragments.

peter duimelinks' music activities date back to the mid eighties, in a time in which he co-founded the musique concrete group thu20 with a.o. roel meelkop and jos smolders. working with thu20 was of vital importance to duimelinks and it shaped his ideas and concepts about sound and how to work with it. traces of this period can still be heard in his more contemporary solowork, which usually consists of field- recordings sometimes heavily reworked but mostly used in it's pure form, and then organised into a composition. he is also a member of the improvisation trio kapotte muziek and electronic pulse trio goem. in the last 15 years he has also collaborated extensively with visual artists, film and video makers and contemporary dance choreographers, and has had several exhibitions of sound installations. he runs the v2_archief music/sound label and the audio.nl label.

in their playing together bretschneider and duimelinks go back to the core of minimal, click related techno music, to the early days of komet and goem. minimal but engaging music, always with the heartbeat pulse at the bottom.

various artists - 'epitaph for john'
kp 3016 full length cd

over the course of his life john watermann worked with almost every conceivable artistic medium. in many ways, he was the epitome of the "total artist"; almost every element of his life being in some way his own artistic project.

as a young man in his native germany he worked as a photographer and documentary filmmaker, also etching, painting and writing. his experience as a youth in germany in the second world war influencing his work from then right through until his death.

following his move to australia watermann worked as jeweller, opening a number of shops in sydney with his longtime australian partner barbara heath (an accomplished jeweller in her own right) and meanwhile continued to write, paint and even sculpt. eventually, after traveling the east coast of australia in a self-built sailing boat, watermann settled in brisbane and began to produce his music.

he first released his music in 1989 in the form of the album "warmth is the fifth room". like most of his releases, the cassette appeared in a run of very few copies on his own label "nightshift", and was consequently almost impossible to find.

over the next 10 years he released numerous albums and contributed to a number of compilations, both under his own name as a solo artist, in collaboration with others (such as merzbow) and under a number of pseudonyms (including radio mull, spinal machine and total disease). also, apart from his music, in the 1990s he created an interactive cd-rom work "rose is a rose" and published the webzine "lean yellow supporting".

sadly, on april 2nd 2002 john watermann died suddenly of an infection resulting from his ongoing treatment for cancer. having in the final year of his life returned to painting and writing (alongside a burgeoning interest in cooking), he still had vast plans for future projects.

among these unfulfilled projects were plans to collaborate with frans de waard on a new release. although only preliminary discussions on the collaboration took place and watermann never completed any work towards the project, watermann's source material that was to be the basis of the work now serves as a basis for this tribute release.

despite his vast artistic output, watermann has been known almost exclusively for his music and even then his work remains largely undiscovered, perhaps for no other reason than its sheer unavailability. in many ways watermann could be considered a classic example of the artists' artist, his work influencing many far more prominent sonic alchemists. and perhaps then this release serves as a record of watermann and his influence, documenting the respect he reserved from his peers and, hopefully, introducing his work to a new audience.

- ben byrne

this cd contains the original soundwork sent to frans de waard by john watermann, reworkings thereof by asmus tietchens, ralf wehowsky, merzbow and freiband.

in april 2002, kapotte muziek returned to the usa for their second tour (the first one was in 1993), this as a trio of frans de waard, roel meelkop and peter duimelinks. on stop was at the rural city of easthampton and the audience that night was rather small, but among them were scott faust, gregory whitehead and thurston moore. that particular concert showed kapotte muziek in probably their most fluxus element: the process of making music was made audible. the amplification of the opening of the bags, searching out objects to play and from there built the concert was a new, and as of yet, unrepeated, idea. for the 12th part in our series of 'kapotte muziek by...' we asked thurston moore to expand on this idea and in a totally free setting of piano, guitar and small objects, he recreates the concerts by removing the concert and replacing it by his own playing, where the original recording serves as a score.

thurston moore is a well-known improviser, having played with nels cline, loren mazzacane connors, tom surgal and william hooker. besides all of that, he also plays in rockband.

this is in many ways a break with tradition. normally toshiya tsunoda writes detailed descriptions of what he does per piece, but in this case it is just said he reworks an old cassette by kapotte muziek, called 4 stukken. this is the second break: up until now musicians involved in this series used live recordings, but tsunoda is the first to use a studio recording by kapotte muziek. like the cassette there are four parts, corresponding with the original release and they are reworked in the best tsunoda tradition, involving field recordings and strange and unusual on-site recordings.

the sound work of japanese artist toshiya tsunoda represents a radical rethinking of the concept of field recordings. rather than being documental or naturalistic, his pieces appear as unique music compositions concerned with the relation between space and cognition, rendering the vibration of objects audible, revealing with the meticulously scientific approach of a cataloguist, tsunoda captures the depth of the landscape, the vital breathing of things.

toshiya tsunoda is a yokohama, japan based artist who studied at the tokyo national university of fine art and music. since 1994, he has been operating the wrk label, which he co-founded with minoru sato. he has released work on staalplaat (nl), selektion (de) and hapna (sw). his work has been shown at the icc, tokyo, and the kawasaki city museum, among others.

stephan mathieukapotte muziek by ...” compact disc

stephan mathieu - kapotte muziek by
korm plastics kp 3012 cdep

original recordings from a kapotte muziek concert from august 1996, im eimer, berlin, germany. reworked by stephan mathieu at pixelland, schafbrücke and pullover, falkensee between february and october 2002. published by freibank.

bio

born in 1967 in saarbrücken, germany, stephan mathieu spent the '90s in berlin as an improviser playing drums. in 1998 he returned to his hometown to "become a family man," and began working with a computer. since 2000 he has taught digital arts and concepts at the university for arts and design hbk saar in saarbrücken and at the bauhaus academy in weimar. a composer, performer, and installation artist, mathieu has created sound installation works for the cultural heritage völklinger hütte, germany, and elsewhere, and has released more than 10 albums for labels such as orthlorng musork, ritornell, lucky kitchen and fällt, both solo and in collaborations with ekkehard ehlers among others.

track note

i like the basic idea of the computer being a machine that works for you. my main applications are like organisms -- living creatures. once you've made friends with them you can rely on them and become a team.

thats what my work since 2001 is based on: a certain trust in my software, and not too much control to the composer. with my rework for the dutch band kapotte muziek, this concept topped itself out. i spent eight months processing raw material, resulting in the usual several gigabytes. when it was about time for me to finish the piece i returned to my files to edit them down in protools (mac os9).

i re-listened to everything, made some adjustments, and then rebooted in osx to work in soundhack. after a little while my machine crashed, hard -- so hard that all i could do to restart it was to take out the batteries. when i finally rebooted in osx it did nothing else but play this music for 30 minutes, a medley of my kapotte muziek material, finished by the computer itself.

kapotte muziek, ironically enough, translates as "damaged music." the live concert i remixed took place 1996 in a berlin club called "im eimer" - that's "in the bucket," a funny way of saying "out of order/damaged".
