toshiyuki tsuchitori "johmonko" (cd)
publisher: japan traditional cultures foundation vzcg-686

the j mon period of japanese history began between twelve and thirteen thousand years ago and to continue for ten thousand year. it acquired its name, which means "rope patterns", on account of the presence of various braided rope patterns on the surfaces of excavated earthenware attributed to this age.

the middle part of the j mon period was an age of high cultural development: many artifacts providing a vivid description of the spiritual world of the time have been uncovered, and it is during the mid-j mon period that we come across the earliest musical instruments to be found in japan.

this cd featured performances on an unusual earthenware object through by scholars to have been a large drum and on reconstructed versions of earthenware flutes and bells. two flutes discovered in excavations are also used. this is the first ever recording featuring musical instruments uncovered at leading archaeological sites.

recorded in 1990.
