evil moisture: if you want to fuck the sky, teach your cock to fly

catalogue #: ideal083
format: lp
edition: 500
release date: 2010-03-04
notes: black vinyl.

evil moisture is andy bolus, operating from his base in a former mirror factory in north east paris. "if you want to fuck the sky, teach your cock to fly" is an old russian prison saying and very suitable to the sound of this lp. it sounds like it was recorded in a prison somewhere in siberia with super cold analog synths, cut-ups and loops working while a female voice (the one of brigitte bordelle - paris performance artist) is working hard scaring the living hell out of us.

bolus has toured a lot in japan and europe and was known to modify electronic toys but is nowadays more into changing synths and stuff into his own needs.

evil moisture is one of the hidden masters of today’s european noise scene. he has released tons of amazing releases on cassette, cd and vinyl on labels like tochnit-aleph and stomach ache and has worked with hanatarash (eye yamatsuka of boredoms) and others and is also active doing visual art and installations. he is active since 1991. bolus is legend!

organ [modified krumar organ], effects [feedback system, oscillators], synthesizer [korg 800dv], tape [revox] - andy bolus.
voice, recorder - brigitte bordelle.

mastered by henrik rylander.

altar of flies
"permanent cavity"

ideal081 2010
format: compact disc.
edition: 600
b/w digipack

altar of flies is the new power on the swedish noise scene, to be put on the underground throne next to sewer election. altar of flies is mattias gustafsson who has recorded stuff since 2006, mainly for his own cassette label hästen & korset but also high quality sub terrestial labels like cipher, husk, and nil by mouth. "permanent cavity" is his first more widely distributed album release.

altar of flies is extremely uncompromising, creating organic, dark, unpleasant extreme electronic music through tape loops, analog synths and effects. this is very physical music in every way.

so - discover the power of altar of flies.

cover by daniel fagge fagerström (the skull defekts).

sewer electionkassettmusik
cd album. ideal058 2008. digipack.

sewer election is dan johansson, based in gothenburg, sweden. he is most known for his extreme and nasty noise on often stupidly hot and limited edition cassettes and obscure vinyl and silver disc releases. what separates se from the rest of the wall-of-noise-heads is that he is actually very good at creating uncomfort and filth. to experience his stuff is like experiencing pure power and energy… but ”kassettmusik” is more than that and give us another side of sewer election. it’s still filthy but here the sources are decaying tape loops. they seem to be feeding on themselves. it makes you feel  uneasy and uncomfortable. if this is what you’re after – then ”kassettmusik” is your thing. when i first heard it i loved it and i still feel uncomfortable listening to it even after a hundred listenings. now, that’s quality for you.

moments captured and repeated in raw mono. contact mic, cassette loops + cassette amplifier. recorded april 2007. limited to 500 copies. comes in a sexy b/w digipack.

floodlight
compact disc album

kindly subsidized by the swedish council for cultural affairs.

electro-acoustic music is going to different places. longtime fylkingen collaborator mattias petersson is going somewhere of great importance ...

mattias petersson’s first album for ideal; “floodlight,” can be seen as a beautiful shadows of compositions that never were or almost became reality. echoes and shadows of melodies are cut up and hidden in layers of sound and noise. we are amazed over how well this is done and we just simply cant recommend this album enough to anyone who is interested in electronic music! it is a massive work and is succeeding to both include rough edges and friendly elements. another proof that the swedish electronic music scene is feeling all right at the moment ... carrying the tradition of composers like rune lindblad, akos rozmann and lars-gunnar bodin, petersson is amongst a new group of people that will be seen as very influential. check it out, ok?

biography

mattias petersson was born in 1972 and grew up on a small island off the south-east coast of sweden. when he was five, his mother took him to a christmas party, where people were supposed to dance around a christmas tree. during the party he discovered that a small ventilation fan were rotating just below the ceiling. obsessed with electro-mechanical devices and their sounds as he was, he started to shout: "everybody keep silent! i want to listen to the sound of the fan!'". of course no one paid attention to this shouting little kid, which made him very angry, screaming even louder. his mother eventually had to leave the party, because mattias stubbornly persisted in his impossible request. this is the background to a man who is living and breathing sound.

his father had an old reel-to-reel tape recorder with sound-on-sound capabilities. petersson used to play with this in his early teenage, recording casio keyboards, drum-machines, piano and other sounds. he also took piano lessons, and played a lot of classical music during this time. for some years this became his main interest, and later on actually resulted in a piano teacher exam. at the same time he listened a lot to obscure electronic music, and also discovered the music of stockhausen, steve reich, xenakis and others through the great record library at the university. but the urge to make his own music, instead of reproducing others, grew stronger on him and finally he decided to give up the piano playing, and became a full-time composer instead.

mattias petersson is now based in stockholm, where he studied electro-acoustic composition at the royal college of music. besides this formal training, the more anti-academic fylkingen community has had a big infuence on his works. in this context he has collaborated and played with a lot of other artists, as well as doing solo pieces in multichannel surround and other sound experiments.

his music has been described as a mix between ambient electronica, electro-acoustic, industrial and crackling noise. since the critically acclaimed debut album "mimer" (fylkingen records, 2003), which was based upon sounds from a defunct iron mine, petersson' s industrial soundscape has been mixed with piano and orchestra samples, treated through dirty filters, analog distortion and digital degradation. mattias petersson also released some cd-r’s on his own label "wickerwork recordings", and contributes with a track on the compilation "the post_pian02 open remix project" on the renowned label 12k.

2008 release ; “acoustic drone jazz” from this scandinavian quartet, led by viktor sjöberg ...

jazz in the “in a silent way” sense, i’m assuming ... this music by & large consists of long, slowly drifting pieces based around a single tonality / chord-shape, as if the more tenuous end of fennesz’ discography were played, in real time, by a group of musicians instead of a single laptop ... quite nice.

viktor sjöberg new jazz ensemble
do nothing ‘til you hear from me
compact disc album

we’d like to call this acoustic drone jazz. viktor calls it slow jazz on himself which might give you an even better idea on how this sounds. this beautiful album (viktor’s first one with this band) is sensitive and fragile. it is music filled with passion, warmth and love. it

invites you in and holds some dark moods and atmospheres which is perfect for some high quality time in your own company. a great late night companion!

viktor sjöberg started recording his music around 1995 experimenting with what hip-hop might be and become, and soon using field recordings and record sampling in his ambient activities. he is a member of jens lekman’s live band and is currently travelling the world with him.

let’s hear what the man himself has to say about the album.

words are kind of tricky. this might actually be one of the instances where words are redundant, but i'm on a train right now and the activities available are somewhat limited. so, here goes; jazz. :: by letting people know that you are not part of a something, for  instance a "musical movement", you are automatically letting yourself be controlled by the thing that you claim to have no connection to. in other words, a negated reference is still very much a reference and one should be aware of the fact that by making a statement such as "this is not one of those tired testosterone-fuelled free jazz records" you are inviting the connection between your work and the very thing that you are trying to avoid. perhaps even more importantly, you are letting yourself be defined by what you're not. this all sounds quite serious. i could follow this up by writing that "this is not a manifesto", but by now we all know that saying that would kind of turn it into one. yeah. the album that we have recorded is called "do nothing 'til you hear from me" and it contains five variations on one musical theme. it is a jazz album and i hope that you will enjoy it” // viktor sjöberg

aleph-1
»aleph-1«

cat. no. ideal048cd/lp
year 2007
format cd/2lp

aleph-1 is a project by carsten nicolai aka alva noto / noto. aside from his sound works under those pseudonyms, aleph-1 is electronic music with an acoustic sound aesthetics that was especially developped for the ideal recordings label. the concept of aleph-1 derives from the theories of the mathemtician georg cantor, who was teaching in halle, germany, a city, to which nicolai is deeply connected with through his family.

the sound pieces of aleph-1 deal with the idea of infinity in terms of structure and length. without actual beginning or end, they fade in and out. the pieces have a very logically constructed nature of overlapping tracks, which seem to be never the same thus could be extended into infinity. the album consists of eight rhythmic circles, based upon acoustic material, at first sight very minimal but always carrying pulse and melody. music you can loose yourself in.

for a deeper knowledge of the term aleph-1, here’s a short definition: 1884 the term aleph-1 was introduced by georg cantor into the mathematical world. since then the first letter of the hebrew alphabet, combined with a number has been used to represent the cardinality (or size) of infinite sets. the aleph numbers differ from infinity (?) commonly found in algebra and calculus. alephs measure the sizes of sets; infinity on the other hand, is commonly defined as an extreme limit of the real number line, or an extremal point of the extended real number line. while some alephs are larger than others, ? is just ?.

some thoughts on the aleph recordings, including a letter to carsten nicolai.

dear carsten,

i just want to remind your of the fruitful days we spent in geneva in august 2004, doing that 16-hours-interview that became the material for the essay i wrote for the catalogue of your exhibition the following year at schirn kunsthalle in frankfurt. the city of geneva was like a passage, leading us into foreign and complex territories of the mind, like the fact that you stayed in l’hotel carnavin, the same hotel that features in the tintin story the calculus affair – a book based on the fact that professor calculus invents a sound-device capable of destroying objects from a distance – or the strange encyclopedic thoughts linked to the fact that the argentinian master writer of imaginary fiction, jorge luis borges, died in geneva, in 1986.

it all comes back to me when i listen to these fantastic new recordings of yours, issued on the gothenburg ideal label, with their rhythmic variations on a most limited set of sound materials. here you use the alias of aleph, the first letter in the hebrew alphabet. but aleph was as well the name of a book of short stories by borges, published in 1949. the title story of that book presents the idea of infinite time and the experience of finding the whole universe contained in a single place. maybe this kind of connections and correspondences makes me a bit superstitious and hyper-interpretative, but it’s rather astonishing how well the sounds of the aleph recordings fit with the abstract freedom of the borges story. the music is beautiful and mysterious in the same way that borges wrote, with a precise alertness to the minimal changes of the material. you have to listen carefully. which is not a problem at all, but a feeling of possibilities.

the endlessness that comes out of these variations makes the music physically direct and ephemerally conceptual in the same time. the connection to your sculpture/sound work bausatz noto from 1998, with its construction of four technics 1210 record players playing a series of endless loops, seems very natural. and naturalness is the key to this music, i think. nature in the sense of complete and neverending wonder. i listen again and again to your new record, everytime astonished how fresh the music sounds, how clear and sensual. aleph is simply one of your best recordings so far. so thanks a lot, carsten.

all love from

heavily psychedelic. minimal. slow mindbending stuff... highly recommended, a future classic!

since wolf eyes formation during the end of the 90s up until today, their musical output has grown into an impressive oeuvre and gained them successes granted only a few bands. their style places them somewhere in the border area between experimental music, freeform, noise and harsh industrial. "black wing over the sand" is one long session (on vinyl divided on side a and b) that from the very first beginning lays bare the roots of wolf eyes: here is an evident presence of the industrial music of the early 1980s with bands such as throbbing gristle, maurizio bianchi (mb) and gary mundy’s cassette label broken flag.

instead of the harsh dissonances and compact walls of noise wolf eyes are well known for, the wholly instrumental piece moves slowly forward over a basis of silence. in that way black wing over the sand belongs to one of the band’s more accessible pieces of music, and is an excellent introduction to the dark cosmos of wolf eyes. with oscillating movements, wolf eyes conjure up short bursts of noise with screaming high pitched tones where a rhythmic deep and slow bass soon sets in, disappears, returns, increases pace, disappears and returns again. electric guitar, echo effects and sweeping sounds creates powerfully nerved effects over the slow rhythm.

black wing over the sand is yet another proof of how wolf eyes, simultaneously looking backwards and distinctly lets themselves be influenced by the hidden musical undercurrents that lies most close to their heart, with little means and creative craftsmanship succeeds in creating something altogether new, exciting and always unexpected.

black wing over the sand, now released on vinyl (limited to 900 copies) and shortly on cd, is a co- release from kning disk and ideal recordings. the album cover and inner sleeves features art illustration by andreas nilsson, fredrik söderberg och alivia zivich.

the atmospheric impact of the collaboration of bjnilsen and z’ev is massive. their genius is the power of drone and the beauty of trance. they build atmospheres that are at the same time disturbing, meditative and enjoyable. the atmosphere i am talking about is of course deep and dark, and it’s hitting the spine hard. it’s hard not to listen to the album in it’s full bloom. we’re hearing killer drone music here.

in ’22.22’, we see something natural happening. i want it to continue. i don’t want it to stop here… it’s too intense and beautiful to stop here. maybe it is that feeling that makes this album so great to me. the fear of this is it.

bjnilsen is a true master of the drone and together with z’ev’s magical percussion – the ’22.22’ album is no less than a true contemporary masterpiece. ideal is proud to be part of such beautiful work…

22.22’ is building. filling space. making it all worth while.

2008 release ; something of a “comeback” album from former american idm producer chris douglas, now dealing in masterclass-level electro-acoustic composition & frozen drone-scapes ...

much of this reminds me of xenakis’ tape-piece bohor (a personal touchstone) ; mainly in that there’s a constant field of dry crinkling/ringing trinkets & natural-rhythm elements all but buried under a huge wave of looming electronic dread ...

immersive stuff, great for deep listening ...

o.s.t. "waetka"
cd album. ideal042 2008. digipack.

an important album by one of the hidden masters of the contemporary electronic music scene! o.s.t. is berlin-based christopher douglas and ”waetka” is his long awaited return after a five years hiatus, a time he spent hidden in the darkest shadows. step into a world of advanced electronic composition, static ambient soundworlds and a document of a hurt soul. this is how it sounds to survive.

"waetka" is advanced post-techno - where the beats are replaced by the darkest of atmospheres.

learn more …

christopher douglas (b. 1974) began releasing records as o.s.t. in 1992 as a result of needing an outlet after growing up surrounded by extreme forms of constant, shifting confusion. “douglas time has been a series of trials and confrontations where facts bore no truth and the present resides outside his creative musical energies.

his crew consisting of jonah sharp (spacetime continuum), shobhan, billee and the holographic clothing collective spacetime was the first to throw techno and ambient music parties in san francisco in 1990 which he started to dj and record his own stuff . their parties and the crew changed the club climate in sf that was at the time dominated by house and disco by being involved in the invitation and introduction of live sets by artists such as ritchie hawtin, u-ziq and many others in the like mind. when douglas moved on a spontaneous invitation from richie to detroit in his late teens (only to return to sf some time later) he met up and became friends  and worked briefly with mad mike banks (co-founder of underground resistance and killer techno producer) and james stinson (of the legendary detroit electro mystics drexciya r.i.p.) and lived in the legendary downtown lofts “1217 griswold”. he released his first ep in detroit on switch records.

chris douglas continued to release high quality works as o.s.t., rook vallade/valard and also began to remix as spacetime continuum and released stuff on labels like plug research, diskono, worm interface, emanate, and astralwerks, participating on comps with artists like autechre, carl craig, squarepusher and boards of canada.

in 1999 douglas released the very interesting and ground breaking ”death notice” album on thousand/phthalo. in 2001, o.s.t. was invited to open for autechre on their us west coast tour promoting their ”confield” album and he soon after released the ”seimlste” album on his own now defunct qlipothic label. a beautiful study of  loneliness and despair and a sort of electronic music therapy.

in 2003 o.s.t. was invited by autechre to perform at their curated  all tomorrow’s parties, in the uk.  he was featured on the comp cd and record that was released in connection to the event together with gescom, bfc (carl craig), pita, earth and others. this was where he met joachim  nordwall of  ideal and they decided to work on an album for the label – this is what became what you now holds in your hands – ”waetka”!

after a tragic event he was forced to relocate to berlin where he took a much needed time off until 2007. starting with a dvd for berlin heads shitkatapult, ”synken”, together with transforma.

forthcoming in the year  2008 - new album titled "ideom" under his dalglish guise for record label records. a limited vinyl release of an autechre remix of  "ou" taken from the album seimlste , and a digital only release for online label ”adozen” containing many outtakes from dvd  “synken”. an dalglish album for the london label highpoint lowlife and an visual ep to be included on the label  upcoming dvd ep release, a proposed idea of a "directors cut" of synken, is in the works. douglas is still also compiling an  album  of o.s.t. being remixed by autechre, pita, merzbow and others. to finally tackle the long proposed idea to reinterpit album “death notice” with acoustic instruments. christopher douglas is back!

rylander & elggren are kings of uneasy listening and chaos! but hidden within is beauty. this is a powerful experience of sound and two of sweden's most uncomfortable artists...

henrik rylander (ex-union carbide productions, also active in the skull defekts and leif elggren (krev, firework edition and the sons of god) at spire live in masthuggskyrkan. curated by mike harding of touch. part of gothenburg art sounds 2005. this long piece was executed at an extreme volume and it was seriously painful to experience the damned thing! but here it has mysteriously become very listenable and pulsatingly rhythmical. it is a truly powerful piece by two of swedens finest cutting age sound artists. the cd also features two remixes by the idealst and sound terrorist c.p.u.

about the artists:

henrik rylander is a gothenburg-based sound and visual artist working in the fields of noise, intense avant garde rock and photography. he was the drummer of the infamous and retarded garage rock band union carbide productions and is currently in the newly formed primal rock band the skull defekts. his photography is clinical and documentative, and as clinical is his feedback solo works - as heard on the "traditional arrangements of feedback" album for ideal.

leif elggren is based in stockholm and king of elgaland-vargaland together with cm von hausswolff, and is running the firework edition for the most brave swedish sound art on tasty cd's and vinyl and is also publishing beautiful books and prints. his own works are extremely focused and is ciruclating around themes as power, religion, life & death. together with kent tankred he is one of the sons of god, a great performance and noise duo.

»organic universe« is the second full length album of the new alchemy; the sounding output for multi-faced artist per svensson, born in gothenburg in 1965, now based in the beautiful south-west of sweden. svensson is comfortably moving between sound art and noise experiments, poetry, psych-rock, installation- and conceptual art. the borders are cloudy and unimportant. this is all as important to the world you are to know as the new alchemy.

per svensson was since the very early 80’s involved in the gothenburg punk scene and bands like rabies and also in the legendary society garageligan. he has slowly created an artistic language of his own and since 1987 he is earning his living as an artist. active in the circuit surrounding the radium organisation he was inspired by people like cm von hausswolff, freddie wadling, jean-louis huhta and leif elggren. soon – svensson’s work was picked up by elggren’s label firework editions which has been a very important base for his alchemical experiments in sound and image.

»organic universe« is alchemic rock with an honest power. there’s a lot of nerve, and svensson is allowing time to evolve the songs… there’s echoes of rock music from the 60’s and on. and echoes of mysticism, alchemy and occultism – colouring the music and the lyrics of course.

timeless music. but also simply, a fucking good rock album from the new alchemy

the second full-length for ideal by gothenburg's dead letters spell out dead words offer us a journey down the depths of a hurt soul. recorded during one year of emotional turmoil, from pitch black depression to something resembeling happiness, »old ghosts, new ghosts, all ghosts« combine ekelund's penchant for treated field recordings, monotonous soundscapes and epic drones. this album is a must for anyone in to dark drone music. there are traces back in time as well as a very personal sound on this album, which consists of 19 tracks, divided into two parts, the first one being the darker of the two. some peices carry titles, others not. they are there to take the album forward, perhaps to tell a story of how it feels to be down and out. to lose hope. to lose love. to be left behind. »old ghosts, new ghosts, all ghosts« is as beautiful as pain can get.

thomas ekelund (b. 1977), based in gothenburg, sweden does what others fail to do - he gives life to his machines. his sound is very organic and real and should appeal to everyone interested in deep listening, ambient noise, as well as the human psyche.

this is seriously deep.

this is without doubt one of the best recorded and coolest sounding advanced-experimental music records we have laid our ears upon. it's a document of the true power in sound and noise recorded at the swedish national radio. in the hands of mats gustavsson, dror feiler and lasse marhaug sound and noise are getting vital again. three true masters that whip the cream and blood outta their equipment, taking us to unknown territories of music, challenge and sound. a modern power trio, and debut album by this proud line up.

about the band members:

mats gustafsson (b. 1964) maybe the most important and well-known improvisational musician in sweden today. since the late 80's he has collaborated with such names as peter brotzmann, sonic youth, otomo yoshihide and ken vandermark on a regular basis but is also known for his exciting solo projects for solo saxophone, most recently the amazing "slide" album for firework editions and "catapult" for doubtmusic. he is also playing with ingebrigt haaker-flaten and paal nilssen-love as the thing and with thurston moore and jim o'rourke as diskaholics anonymous trio, amongst other shapes and forms with different artists.

dror feiler (b. 1951) dror feiler is based in stockholm and have since his arrival to the city in the late 70's become a very important figure for the swedish modern art & music scene. feiler is a very political person and is very outspoken and sometimes controversial. he has been a key figure for many years at fylkingen in stockholm and is working with visual arts, electro-acoustic composition , noise, opera, ballet and compositions for orchestras. as an improviser, he is infamous for his group lokomotiv konkret who has blown audiences away since 1977.

lasse marhaug (b. 1974) lasse has over the last ten years been one of the leading forces in the so-called norwegian noise scene. as a performer and composer he has over a hundred releases to his name, as well as extensive touring and performing in europe, asia and america. in addition to his solo work, marhaug plays regularly in projects jazzkammer, del, rishaug marhaug and a duo with frode gjerstad. past projects include origami replika and lasse marhaug band. he has collaborated with several artists in his own field of music, but has over the years also worked with artists in the improv, free jazz, drone rock and extreme metal scenes, as well as theatre, dance and video.

contemporary punk unit is joel brindefalk, an electronic composer who lives in karlskrona in the south-east of sweden. he has been composing music since the late 80's when he was first attracted to stuff like die form and skinny puppy. soon after this he discovered both electro acoustic experiments like the one's by rune lindblad and the world of dub through lee perry. you might say c.p.u. is the natural bastard child of these inspirational sources. with the mentality of dub he speaks the language of hi-tech electronics. now, 2006, c.p.u. is focusing on his noisier sides. most recently on cassettes on white tapes in brooklyn, nyc and ufo mongo, sweden. we hope he will get his head together long enough to make us the album we have waited for since 2003.

hardcore improvisation. extreme, sharp and filled with burning energy - no more music (at the service of capital). this is a beautifully painful record recorded in oslo, brussels and strassbourg in early 2006 by the duo of  argentinian lucio capece on saxophone, often feedbacked through a mixer and basque computer improviser/feedbacker/ destroyer and thinker mattin, both based in sunny berlin.

"universal prostitution" moves in the wastelands between extreme reductionism, noise and focused improvisation. the message is very political. a fist in the face of the capital. get into the void. cover image by gustav klucis. only free software were used.
