| june 2008 release ; the debut outing on bruce adams (formerly 1/2 of the kranky empire) new label & the first thing ive been able to grip by virginian black-metal force wrnlrd ...
extremely gratifying blast of home-recorded, anti-social din ; tin-foil-thick guitar buzz in the upper-registers, drums being played with bones (possibly by a caveman, or at least one of his descendants) & what could almost be called vocals, were they not buried so deep in the mix as to add only an extra layer of fuzz / texture to the overall morass ...
but then again, all is not as it seems ; war opens with an atonal acoustic guitar round ; plus the intros & outros are fog-thick banks of guitar-derived drone-sound (listen to the sound-sample) on par with anything from the andrew chalk cookbook ...
its an odd comparison to make, but i feel the same way about this wrnlrd fellow as i did the first time i heard six organs of admittance ; theres that same sense of pulling apart a genre w/a set-in-stone set of rules (metal, here, vs. chasnys folk) ... sure, its vicious, but in a kind of desparate / exasperated / personal way ...
comes in an absolutely luscious no-expense-spared edition ; full-gloss gatefold sleeve w/ a bright-yellow obi (translating the impenetrable black-metal fonts for those of use w/ocular maladies) hides a thick-ass 180g pressing, ensuring proper transmission of any/all audible anomalies/subtleties from wrnlrds master to your receiver. highly recommended !!! |

it is an honor to inaugurate the fss label with the sixth album by the supremely cryptic, singular black metal entity wrnlrd. beginning with the self-released mask of hate under its order of the cloven eye banner in 2005, wrnlrd has bent black metal to its will. working with guitar, bass, fiddle, banjo, synths and samples; wrnlrd throws metal, industrial, noise, dark ambient and folk musics into a blackened and bubbling cauldron. a potent stew indeed.
wrnlrd records spontaneous, wordless vocalizations and details the lyrics later, improvises massed guitar tones, buries samples deep into the mix and brings the disruptive and unpredictable elements of improvisation and chance into recording. wrnlrd albums have referenced the science fiction novels of cordwainer smith, surrealism, automatic writing and the arcana of washington dc. oneiromantical war is a trudge through tangled thickets of sound. the album was mastered by bob weston and will be available in a limited edition of 500 lps on 180 gram vinyl with a gatefold sleeve.
wrnlrd can be pronounced any way you like. i prefer wern-lerd. oneiromancy is a system of dream interpretation that uses dreams to predict the future.
