having caught jack completely immobilize a room full of partially-to-wholly inebriated concert-goers a few weeks back doing this exact set of music, i can safely say he’s committed to the art-form long-term (can’t even count how many meehan-acolytes i’ve heard breeze through town, only to pop up again backing some schmuck playing “hypnagogic chillwave” a month or two later) ; as a rule, silence is golden & jack uses it here to maximum effect, with each stray session of agitated snare-drum surface cut with a good buffer of “reflection time” in either direction ...

works beautifully as a record (thanks largely to bhob rainey’s sympathetic mastering job) ; haven’t heard a more patience-requiring record in a minute, this one delivers ...

may 2010 release ; ... essentially an lp of off-color songs written & produced by zx spectrum computer-game programmer mel croucher in the early-mid 80s, mainly to augment (or “soundtrack”) a few of his company’s more inspired titles (with names like “piromania”, “olympimania”, “morris meets the bikers”, “go to jail”, etc...) ; many centering around a post pac-man character of his own devising known only as “pi-man” ...

naturally, the “outsider” aesthetic that all but drips from this music has found a great match in ted lee’s feeding tube ; clearly ted’s gone all out to do this project justice, with the record housed in an eye-popping gatefold sleeve (with tons of liner notes & contemporary reflections from mel croucher) along with a printed inner-sleeve with a cut-out pi-man mask & a reproduction of the automata u.k. catalogue, and a huge double-sided fold-out poster ...

this is definitely one for the early home-console game ultra-nerd, or even fans of the private-universe british minimal-synth sound ... not for everyone, but highly recommended for those who “get it” ...

the crown jewel in the feeding tube catalog. the music on this record was recorded from 1981-1985 as the conceptual soundtrack for computer games released on cassette by the british software house automata u.k. ltd. combining primitive synthesizer tones and meandering psychedelic blues guitar with cryptic, off-color lyrics about the multi-colored piman and his pals, this is unlike any other "computer music" you know or have imagined.

ultra thick gatefold, comes with cut-out mask, extensive liner notes and poster.

this is mostly a conceptual single about a crawlspace. i can imagine they rehearse in someone's attic or basement and there it was... that creepy tiny door that leads to the crawlspace. or the pull down rickety ladder in the ceiling. that abandoned place in the house where you can't even really store things, it's just an empty area where all kinds of things/people could live. it's inherently scary.... it's exactly what you've been looking for for years... it's completely insane... a suburban wasteland masterpiece.

october 2009 release ; once banished to the realm of myth & magic, proper lp releases from the hjuler / bär duo are now dropping with frightening regularity & at increasingly reasonable price-points ...

here we get one from just over the hill in western ma ; on one side a “collage of us-american sound poetry, collected by jean-francois bory” presented / remixed by the duo (let’s face it ; most likely fabricated as well) ; this is, naturally, a batshit-crazy affair, with the two absolutely howling over the purported “legacy” materials (through a fender princeton from the sound of things) - it’s both terrifying and oddly inspiring (which sums up most of what makes this stuff so ... engaging) ...

the other side’s a solo mama affair, with two sound-on-sound collages taking in beeping kitchen appliancery, plundered tv audio, stray flute playing and all of the compulsory tape-mangle / bias-laced pause-button antics we’ve come to expect / love / fear ...

classically “terrible” cover / back art seals the deal ; highly recommended !!!

june 2009 release ; i’ve been enamored with the work of skot “id m theft able” spear since catching a one-man play about/by him a coupla years back at the piano factory space - something to do with henri chopin & jean tinguely’s ghost(s) uniting future & past wal-mart employees into a unionized agglomerate, which then takes over the herman goelitz candy-corn factory, converting it into a multi-use, multi-disciplinary art-space / slash / inter-dimensional travel-vehicle spare-parts facility with a very liberal casual-friday practice (needless to say, it was all very confusing and even now only makes a modicum of sense) ...

lo and behold skot returns here with an incredible side-length piece incorporating many of these themes at a million-edits-a-second pace, incorporating his sound poetry, self-built instruments, and pause-button tape antics (seriously, 21 minutes in this guy’s hands shows more ideas-per-capita than the entire 5-disc run of the “archives grm” set combined) ...

on the flip there’s a series of wasted, buzzy germs reconfigurations by the cave bears - fine and all - but the action’s most definitely on the a-side ...
