looper / john tilburymass” digital versatile disc

  • oslo
esquilo press release...
looper
john tilbury
mass (dvd)

nikos veliotis - video, cello
martin küchen - saxophone
ingar zach - percussion
john tilbury - piano

region free, pal, 55 mins, 2 different audio tracks

first release on esquilo's new dvd series, incite series, featuring audiovisual works of contemporary electroacustic improvisation and composition music and video art.

mass is a collective intermedia project, featuring looper (nikos veliotis, martin küchen, ingar zach) and john tilbury, which integrates image and sound to reach a deeper conceptual level that brings open questions about human thoughts and beliefs to the foreground.

the visual side of mass is realised by nikos veliotis and consists of religious images gathered from websites that advertise religion, any religion. the pictures are overlaid and animated in a soft pendulum motion, attempting to somehow detach religion from its obsessive quest for absolute truth.

mass' audio material counterpoints the visual content in terms of constant long and lowercase stretches of sound, interspersed with soft chords and silences, paradoxically retaining a certain religious resonance. the musicians engage in a dialogue by producing a subtle sonic environment, providing the spectator with a suspended situation in which to submerge himself, dislocating him from the casual perception of time and space.

the dvd contais 2 audio tracks recorded live in oslo and stavanger. bonus features include 3 video excerpts from the stavanger onstage performance.

this edition comes in a gatefold black deluxe cardboard case with golden letterwork.

limited to 500 copies.

günter müller
live & replayed (2 discs)
limited to 300 copies

günter müller - i-pod, electronics

in the second instalment of esquilo’s instant series – focusing on improvised music live recordings – comes a new solo album from swiss electronic improviser günter müller. despite having an impressive career and releases list, and being one of the most important cornerstones of international improvisation, this is only müller’s second solo album in almost 20 years.

the first disc – live – consists of three live recordings captured in kyoto, paris and sydney. the second disc – replayed – was entirely based on the original live recordings of disc one: parts of the live tracks were processed in the computer and put as several loops on two i-pods later used to create new studio improvisations (kyoto_replayed and sydney_replayed). one track on disc two was also created exclusively on the computer (paris_remixed).

both discs demonstrate günter’s unique ability and exciting creativity to craft a wide range of intertwined electroacoustic soundscapes, but while ‘live’ is more organic and unpredictable, ‘replayed’ tends to focus on small sonic details and from them depart to complex evolutions.

not to be missed by anyone interested in electronic / electroacoustic improvisation and composition – a true work of great mastery.

comes in a cardboard panels case with original hand-screened art by günter müller himself.

long awaited follow-up to their albuns in rossbin and creative sources, the portuguese / spanish trio shows up here stronger than ever, with a refined view of their improvisational structures. juggling with tension, dynamics and abrasivness, the musicians find their way through instruments like the acoustic turntable, the trumpet, the accordian and found objects. this record is composed of 2 discs: a studio disc (recorded in barcelona) and a live disc (recorded in paris) better displaying the trio's abilities and contradictions in both settings.

wolf eyessix arms and sucks |live in porto|” compact disc recordable

  • intro | 02:27
  • improv song | 29:32
  • 2 songs | 15:20
occasionally someone will write, offering a wolf eyes thing in an edition of 20 or whatever and i always bite and order like 75 because fuck that whole exclusionist / planned obsolescence / resultant ebay aftermarket thing; micro releases are only good & fair when they sate all possible / interested parties (i.e. people shouldn’t have to bend over backwards and resort to guerilla tactics to acquire the music and support the bands they love...)

...which makes what luis has done here quite remarkable: he did a wolf eyes thing in a small edition, then, when it sold out in like 2 hours, he re-pressed it. i know that doesn’t seem like such a vanguard move, but in this day & age it is ...and i’m glad because there aren’t many decent-fidelity board-recorded documents of w.e. shows that aren’t filtered through the gunk-bank/micro-cassette of the group. not to mention that there aren’t that many wolf eyes things that filter their sensibility, graphically speaking, through the mind of another; making the beautiful wood-cut-collage sleeve-art of mr. soopa that adorns the textured kraft-stock gatefold cd-sleeve so striking (esp. the three bearded warriors pictured in the gatefold...)

the first track’s got some great anti-uk olson/connelly comedy-banter before slipping into an excellent 30-minute minimal/rising improv of scraping metal and fizzing electronics that, in spots, is on par with the recorded output of such “classic” live-electronic spell-casters as david tudor, m.e.v., gruppo nuova consonanza, etc... not exactly the deep-vein throb we’ve come to expect from the connely/young/olson line-up. this gives way to the “medley” of wolf eyes “hits” (‘stabbed in the face’, etc...) that makes up the last 15-odd minutes...

considering all things this is a pretty damn unique entry into their discography-grimoire. i have a ton of copies, so no rush to get this into your stronghold/outbox... it’ll be around and available from mms to any & all takers for quite a while...

wolf eyes
six arms and sucks
|live in porto|

recorded live in porto this release shows a different side of wolf eyes. clearly uncomfortable for playing to a sitted audience, the band throws an unsetting 30 minutes long improvised track ranging from quiet moments – where scrapped metal, electronics and horns melt – to the most explosive harsh noise and guttural vocals.

but this was not the end. without warning, wolf eyes start a 2 songs medley. both well know for the wolf’s concert goers. minimal beats, distorted guitars, cracked-up electronics and noisy vocals fill the remaining 20 minutes.

this edition comes in a gatefold cardboard sleeve with silkscreened original art designed by soopa

limited to 200 copies.
