“an architectural commentary is a form of ‘reviewing’ architecture in which functional, symbolic and aesthetic aspects of a building or a bigger architectural structure are analysed. inspiration for this cycle of compositions is drawn from architectural criticism, structures, buildings, involuntary cityscapes (‘architecture without architects’) and technological noise within buildings.

one special recording session took place at resonance fm, the london- based radio station, in june 2004. patrick mcginley of resonance fm and i recorded the studio equipment itself, the drive noises, ventilation, vibrations in the machines, the studio’s air conditioning, doors… this particular array of sound forms the sole and exclusive basic material for architectural commentary 5: some models for resonant behaviour and links the cycle to earlier music pieces i constructed with sounds from computer labs. this part was commissioned by resonance fm. in architectural commentaries i composed some structures (mainly in parts 4 and 5) loosely based on luigi nono’s idea of ‘isole musicali’. this means that encyclopaedic variations of themes are generated and often highlighted by silent breaks, like islands, between the individual parts, all different in form and size, but topologically similar.”

frankfurt-based behrens is presently best described as a ‘sound artist’, working across performance, installation and audio-visual recorded media. he also creates photographic works, designs record sleeves, and has even produced a bottle of white wine...

christopher mcfall is a kansas city-based composer. he works with field recordings and analogue tape, whereby the latter is physically treated prior to being processed on a computer. four feels for fire was composed during the summer of 2006, and represents the seemingly endless heat, grit and turbulence that is typical of that season in the mid-western united states.

these minimally-processed recordings of cable cars were made during a trip to the portes du soleil region of france, in les gets, morzine and les lindarets. the sounds have been layered to enhance the feelings 0f suspense and tension experienced during the journey.

bristol-based simon has been a musician for almost 20 years. in 2000 he composed and recorded the soundtrack to artist kathryn thomas' first solo london exhibition, and has continued to record music for her shows, as well as working on his own experimental pieces. simon's previous work, 'dark light audio tracks', was released by the online label filament recordings in june 2006. the work is a soundtrack to an exhibition, 'a dark light', which comprises paintings, photography and film taken on and informed by a trip to iceland in 2005.

helena gough's debut album consists of seven soundworks, conceived as spaces to enter. within these spaces sounds are born, then evolve, disintegrate and sometimes die. each is created usinga minimum of raw material, usually derived from recordings of small sounds and domestic noises. this material is pulled apart until its roots are severed and it becomes free from its original ties. efforts are made to find a balance between spontaneity and precision. rarely is there a resolution or a direct linear progression from a to b; often it is something closer to a into a - ideas turn in on themselves. textures appear to be still but are always in motion. this microscopic approach is a focus of the way in which sounds are treated.

this cd collects four previously available releases (e11, e13–e15). resistance cycle/invisible orchestra: the first track was recorded with a 1960s valve sine wave tone generator, the second one with records and turntables. trail of droplets: four tracks of filmic and melancholic electronic music by ben norland. engtevrees: peter smeekens’ work straddles analogue and digital technologies without being overly suggestive of either. engtevrees illustrates this well over its 20-minute duration; it’s composed entirely of a recording made at an underground car park in antwerp which was then manipulated with a computer, tape decks and effects. an absent–minded track: a powerful union of error and coincidence, captured onto tape via an erratic analogue keyboard emitting its last battery pulse.

six computer music compositions using dynamic stochastic synthesis—a technique developed by the composer iannis xenakis, which uses probability fluctuations to generate the successive sample values in digital wave– forms. a stochastic process is one whose behaviour is non–deterministic in that the next state is partially but not fully determined by the previous state. non–deterministic laws can be observed in nature, for example: the probability that a subatomic particle will disintegrate within a time interval at a given radioactive rate.

joe gilmore is a sound/installation artist based in the north of england. his music has been published by alku, 12k/line, and melange. he is co–founder of rand()%, an internet radio station which streams real–time generative music.

george rogers (sheffield, uk) is a sonic artist who also works with video and painting. past works have included interactive installation and live performance. he is currently working with exploratory synthesis techniques and digital video. he has performed and exhibited in the uk and at international festivals including lovebytes, ultrasound, termite festival, future sonic, short circuits film festival, and fishing-weissensee in berlin.

chad oliveiri and brannon hungness (figure) are friends who enjoy getting together to drink 40s, eat food, and make sounds with various instruments. all of those sounds are improvised, and some of them are recorded. celest is a collection of a few recent bits brannon painfully edited together in his bedroom.

chad is a journalist living in rochester, ny. a long-term self-taught guitarist, he began recording audio experiments to cassette while in high school. the advent of laptop computing allowed him to realise many of his ideas in a much more time-e?cient manner.

figure has recorded and released several albums and has performed extensively throughout the us and europe, either solo or with projects including oblivion ensemble, glenn branca ensemble, hammerhead, and kill myself on monday. he has also recorded with elliot sharp and tony levin, and has shared the stage with zeena parkins, phillip glass, amongst many others.

static. seven short electronic pulses. then - out of thin air - a woman's voice dictates: “...eins, zwei, fünf ...eins, zwo, fünf... drei, vier, fünf...” who are these voices, tirelessly reciting seemingly random series of numbers, phonems and words? and who are these cryptic messages meant for?

the messages are irreversibly encrypted, their contents unintelligible to anyone but the designated receiver. in 1997, british maverick label irdial-discs collected a selection of so called 'numbers stations' or 'spy stations' recordings under the title the conet project. this plays like a ‘best of’ of more than 30 years' worth of secret radio and contains fragments of american, german, swedish and russian transmissions. dutch-born belgian composer esther venrooy was given permission to work with the material and for the occasion of the celebration of 75 years of belgian radio created a highly personal interpretauon of the medium's secret history. using manipulated sound and collage techniques she manages to distill an abstract poetry of sounds and thereby succeeds in extracting some meaning out of these hermetic transmissions.

the title shift coordinate points refers to an excerpt from william s. burroughs' novel nova express. burroughs utilised the jargon of secret services and govemement agencies as a metaphor for systems of social , intellectual, and sexual control.

kallabris’ scientific research has always been outstanding: their north pole expedition, the chemistry of change than can be experienced in mocha, the ondadynamical theory as a clue for the explanation of mental phenomena - just to mention a few, well-known highlights.

this time they go for the core of it all: epistemology covered with ontological speculations. the apologia gives a rough, yet charmingly delivered sketch of the project - impressions and reflections performed with an impressing beat.

the corpus maior is a dance of condensed thought, a playful and enchanted rhythm that cheerfully leads to the epologus which, with its skeptical melancholy, makes plainly obvious how little is done when the answers are given. a tribute to the quest, but in no means to discovery.

this is the second part in canadian david payne’s series of recordings documenting the exploration of feedback loops as a primary sound source. this series focuses on a process of aural manipulation where the artist has very little control over the sound produced. all tracks were improvised directly to tape, with no overdubs or editing.
