dreyblatt only had one record nodal excitation (on the mostly post-aacm jazz label india navigation), before he packed and moved to berlin, were he concentrated on other activities, making only 2 more records over the next 10 years. but for those who caught the action, arnold was the man. he was more rock than any of the other minimalists combined, and he was also the only one to really tap into that massive proto-minimal sound that conrad had squelched out of his tin-contact mic violin in the early 60s.

indeed, in the early 70s, after being in school in buffalo, where conrad taught, dreyblatt moved into manhattan to work for lamonte young, where he witnessed first hand, and listened first-ear to those legendary recordings of the theatre of eternal music. he got interest in long string sounds, and bought a bass that he wired with piano wire. by hitting the strings instead of bowing them, dreyblatt was able to get those ringing overtones, but he also had added something new: pure rhythm...

so what you have here is dreyblatt's freshman record, a slice of minimal history that is as potent now, if not more, as it was then. it was a lighthouse that was aiming the wrong way when the tugboat came by, but now it's shining right in your face.

the wave field is located somewhere in a far away region of the ambient territory, close to the frontier with a swampy area where abstract vibrations from liquid rock are solved under noise-charged clouds echoing some electrical irradiation. 'wave field 5' and '6' were recorded to hard disk from the vibrating body of a fender jaguar wired through a morley wah, korg guitar synth (no synth, filters only), dod graphic eq, alesis reverb and compressor, ashly parametric eq and sansamp.

high water-mark in the dexter’s cigar catalogue; this reissue of a single long-form electronic work composed by folke rabe in 1967, initially issued as a split-lp with bo-anders persson (träd gräs och stenar / pärson sound)’s steve reich tribute “protoimperialism” on the flip (why this has never been reissued is beyond me...)

first issued in 1970 by the german label wergo, what?? (as we would call it here in america) was obscure even among the avant company it kept in; labelmates such as stockhausen, ligeti and cage overshadowed rabe from the start.

"about 85% of the material is made up of electronically generated tones, which however are never present in their static, original form. each partial has been specifically treated in itself, which can at times yield a very rich result. what?? was created in the late summer of 1967, and was realized by me in the electronic studio of the swedish radio...the second what?? is the same as the first, but at half-speed, ie. one octave lower. this may seem a lousy way to fill up a cd, but in fact through the years i have been using both versions in performances. with the kind of sound material used in what??, it does not simply sound half-speed. in a way it becomes another piece of music -- mellower, and the single events of course easier to distinguish.” - folke rabe

corrected slogans was the first lp to be produced and was worked on by art & language and red crayola founder member mayo thompson between 1973 and its release date in 1976. the album’s artwork, musical scores and other ephemera were shown in the room next door to the two videos and now for something completely different and nine gross and conspicuous errors (both 1976), which have a similar lyrical content to the album and which both contain ironic posturing that thinly masks an awkward energy brought about by the mixture of political anthems and rock and roll. of the two videos, nine gross and conspicuous errors best represents this experimental vitality.

unrehearsed songs are performed by groups of unsuspecting participants as well as the knowing core collaborators art & language’s michael baldwin and mel ramsden, with thompson on guitar and jesse chamberlain on drums. activist slogans, such as ‘we must ferociously attack so called institutionalized egalitarianism – it is a smokescreen, which attempts to replace activist content with liberal structures’, are chanted en masse and played out as theoretical quotations and self-mocking mantras. at one point ramsden sings the line ‘marx’s old chestnut “the philosophers know how to interpret the world, the point is to change it” is embedded in the nexus of dialectics’ and thompson makes a dedication ‘to ludwig wittgenstein, who said “you cannot be a philosopher and a communist at the same time”

mayo thompson's until now ultra-rare solo album. the album was produced in houston, texas in 1970 by thompson, frank davis and roger 'rocket' romano for the short-lived but nonetheless legendary texas revolution label of walt andrus. though pressed and advertised in the pages of rolling stone, the demise of the label meant the album went largely undistributed until the mid 1980s when glass records (london) gave it its first proper release.

coming as the sun set on the first psychedelic rock era, corky's debt evokes the early days of acoustic blues, but is already in the maelstrom from which punk rock would emerge just a few years later. the set features innovative performances by some of houston's finest musicians of the time playing eleven songs by thompson -- one with frederick barthelme, with whom he started the red crayola. they represent a broad range of expressive manners and forms.

made to stand with the finest comparable work of the period, corky's debt shows thompson at his most accessible. unique ballads, blues, rock and love songs flow one to another with style, grace and intensity, and the handling of diverse popular-music idioms and language that characterize his more widely known work in the red crayola are also to be found.

the line between genius and madness is very thin. the line between a million dollars and nothing is also very thin. had corky's debt been heard back then, today, if someone mentioned astral weeks, you might say, 'it does?' the beat lives on.
