ensemble economiquecrossing the pass, by torchlight” long playing record

  • everything i have,  i give to you
  • sparks exploding, splintering blackness
  • somewhere, anywhere
october 2011 release ; ... nothing if not prolific, starving weirdosbrian pyle has been dropping a fairly stellar set of idiosyncratic collage-pop lp’s & tapes for the likes of amish, not not fun, & agents of chaos over the past year (a huge body of work, most of it quite good) ...

... here he drops one for dekorder, getting closer to a “dancefloorsensibility than in the past (808 feet & a clearer motorik sensibility seem to dominate ... even if the more cinematic tracks are more engaging - listen to the sound-sample for but one) ...

ensemble economique
crossing the pass, by torchlight
lp

it's an exquisite feeling, to taste the truth, to let it wrap you completely, to feel it's ecstatic warmth, to let it ripple through you, to let you feel life with every breath, as if day and night are colliding, and sparks exploding, and the sky turning deep red, and night falls like a blanket, and the wind is a soft whisper, and the dune grass are like blades, piercing blackness.

ensemble economique is brian pyle of starving weirdos and rv paintings. his solo project (hence the slightly ironic moniker) has previously released a cd on digitalis in 2008 and two recent lp's on amish and not not fun records. his music is highly narrative and cinematic mixing synth loops and electronic rhythms with epic organic structures. crossing the pass, by torchlight is the culmination of pyle's previous works presenting his most refined album so far.

august 2011 release ; ... final installment in this “late (john has decided to put the project to bed to focus on other areas) xela trilogy, dealing a pair of ... well, “sublime” pieces for subtly transposing low-end thrum & eery mid-range chordal slither ... entirely glorious.

xela
the sublime
lp

this third and final part of a trilogy (along with the previously released 'the illuminated' and 'the divine'), 'the sublime' takes john twells' sound into the sickly afterlife, and dives into our misplaced perceptions of heaven and hell. while its predecessor was made up of voices and bells, 'the sublime' is an exercise in synthesis; with twells' arsenal of analogue equipment pushed into overdrive, wheezing and heaving over the two extended pieces. these compositions could be labeled as 'ambient', but 'the sublime' is ambience laced with a creeping torment and itching hedonism that is as impossible to ignore as it is dangerously inviting. swooping synthetic pads and crunching textures don't ever distract from the fact that you are soaking up music that has been carefully considered to drag your mind into an dampened opium-laced torture chamber. think early aphex twin or kevin drumm at his most restrained and you'll be half way there.

ghost lanes
lp

ghost lanes (the a side) was recorded during the first ever duo session that gareth and rutger had, at steim, amsterdam, june 2009. the two hadn't met before, but immediately there was a strange chemistry between them, and without much discussion, it was plug-in and play, and two albums and an ep were recorded. ghost lanes was then released as a very limited 3-inch cdr.

a year and a half later, they settled at steim again, for another fruitful session. that's when mackerel sky was recorded. a perfect match with the a-side of this vinyl and a cumulation of their shared progress.

gareth and rutger's music is all improvised. the slow paced pieces combine the rough loopings of rutger's guitar with the low-end rumblings of gareth's contrabass clarinet. a perfect soundtrack for some weird underwater world.

alexander rishaug
shadow of events
lp

shadow of events is the third album by oslo, norway sound artist, producer and musician alexander rishaug, following his asphodel cd possible landscape (2004) and 2001’s panorama on the smalltown supersound label.

the album was recorded over a five year period and mixed in berlin last year. not unlike his previous albums but apparently more refined shadow of events combines a warm and organic haunting quality blended with both abstract and concrete tones and subtle digital noises.

most of the tracks are developed from field recordings, instrument improvisation or live sampling. then processed and edited with the computer as the main tool. i’ve used sounds hailing from a dusty rhodes, a lovely guitar, a nervous radio and a lonely piano.

rishaug’s music is informed by classic minimal composers such as steve reich and terry riley as well as 90’s electronica acts such as the oval / microstoria axis and like-minded but more obscure artists associated with the mille plateaux label (remember neina?) but surely wouldn’t be out of place on a contemporary label like kranky or type.

repetitive and seemingly simple melodic patterns are combined with (and sometimes obscured by) decaying monlithic drone layers creating a hazy melancholic landscape slowly unfolding its beauty. granular shoegazy tones are building up in slow-motion recalling the patient yet precise and complex drone works of stephan mathieu, william basinski and machinefabriek’s dauw album.

alexander rishaug was part of the improv collective arm (1996-2006) with arne borgan and are mokkelbost (killl) as well as collaborating with lasse marhaug on a lucky kitchen release. he has remixed metal bands ulver and she said destroy as well as noise duo jazkamer and bjorn hatterud and conrad schnitzler’s recent collaboration.

pyramiden von gießen
2lp

datashock is a south-german collective of young punks pretending to be old hippies. they have released albums on qbico, textile, chocolate monk and their own meudiademorte label, and have collaborated with family battle snake, aidan baker and black to comm. pyramiden von gießen is their most psychedelic, mature, song-oriented and krautrock-infused outing so far (think kosmische kuriere, ash ra tempel et al). it's a vinyl-only double-lp in a gorgeous fold-out cover with liner notes by seminal german cut-up poet and novelist jürgen ploog (see below). mastered by pete swanson (yellow swans) and cut at dubplates & mastering.

nomadic sounds

sounds, what are they? where do they come from, where do they go to? they come from the space of nomadic sounds which surrounds the planet. they can dissolve without being heard, or they can temporarily fuse into bodies of sound and fly through the layers of the stratossphere, dancing like chimeras. they can rotate or make their rounds and penetrate heads and bodies. like shadows, falling down on invisible images. attempts to render sounds visible remain in vain. they avoid noise.

sounds densify to drafts and sketches pervading space. he who listens closely can use them for orientation. whereto? he wonders, in an effort to follow them, their image being too seductive. sometimes they betray him and he gets lost in an infinity beyond our grasp, where the soundless western lands are, the destiny of caravans of musicians, wise men and priests and where there are no road signs...where human creatures dissolve in the flickering of bells and sail out to the land of the dead.

the tonal outlines gradually fade and the gaze of the sphinx loses itself. the horizon is a line of shadows above which, glimmering in the backlight, pyramides of sound rise again and again, like fata morganas. behind all this, the desert turns into a land of shadows. a hint of silence glides across endless dunes. the traveller rides on waves of sound, while losing his last pieces of baggage, experience and the identity familiar to him.

he senses that perception becomes a vehicle by which he travels. he starts to live in it and with it enabling him to leave his body behind and to move in time. in this phase, his memories start to fade until they are extinguished and he dissolves in sounds and colours. he has entered the space of simultanities.

more and more mummies, enroute by package tour to the western land stay behind. some believe they could make it to space on their bicycles. they are called fellaheen of the future. they simply left the highway of monotony and loneliness, which they thought too cumbersome, in order to make it to the land of dreams.

flesh, the only weapon the traveller has left, becomes blunter and blunter with every step. it becomes annoying, like the smell of carrion floating around his thighs. in the sucking emptiness above the sand he can smell the fear. it is paraphrased by a hieroglyph for final solitude, which like a beast of prey can turn into a curse of malignance and desperation and, chase the hiker into the hopeless salt hills of the sekbha.

gradually the caravan of courtiers, musicians and artists stays behind. demons disguised as prophets or members to the cult of osiris. they travel with an astonishing armory of portable burial chambers and foldable pyramides, which they set up in no time when pilgrims turn up. sensually deprived are secretly offered pin-ups of alamut women, who are famous for their erotic aura and impatient to be brought to life by the biting smell of ozone of hassan i sabbah, while succubi and incubi from persia and india are chanting encouraging songs.

a man paints the tail of a comet into the sky. he knows that the comet, like halley, will miss the planet. “come with me, stranger, i will take you on a rocket trip.” in a dark valley the candidate is scanned with a radiometer by a virginal dragonfly. no written word is allowed on the trip. what is paper, after all? it is nothing but mutilated memory, says someone, who claims to be a pilot of dreams. he insists that he can leave his body with the help of sounds. with a click of the tongue, they take off into space, where the gaze fades away in a tepid trickle...

a current of air carries them onto the silent sea and into the solitude of sounds.

- jürgen ploog

stephan mathieu
to describe george washington bridge
10"

limited edition of 500 copies!

"to describe george washington bridge" is stephan mathieu's 2nd dekorder release in the 10" format (reflecting his interest in old 78rpm records) after 2009's sold out "the key to the kingdom", and, we're happy to say, again it features two of the composer's most outstanding short pieces. both are recorded utilizing similar methods as used on his most recent album "a static place" on 12k records yet they are presented in an even more condensed and melodic way. as source material he used transcriptions made from the marvelous 25x 12inch 78rpm set g.f. händel. "twelve concerti grossi" performed by the busch chamber players in 1946, and a columbia 10" record from 1912 with händel's usual smash hits from "messiah".

between 1928 and 1932 the earliest recordings of historically informed performances of music from the late gothic, renaissance and baroque era were etched into 78rpm records. i used some of these records from my collection, playing them back with two mechanical acoustic hmv model 102 gramophones. the initial soundwaves produced back then by period instruments like the clavichord, viols, lute, hurdy-gurdy are read from the grooves by a cactus needle to be amplified by the gramophones diaphragm housed in a soundbox. those vibrations travel through the tonearm which is connected straight to the gramophones horn, which releases the music to my space. here the sound is again picked up by a pair of customized microphones and send to my computer, to be transformed by spectral analysis and convolution processes. an imaginary room, inhabited by all the spatial information collected on the journey is created and will be projected in a final instance into the listeners space.

stephan mathieu is a self taught composer and performer of his own music, working in the fields of electroacoustics and abstract digitala. his sound is largely based on early instruments, environmental sound and obsolete media, which are recorded and transformed by means of experimental microphony, re-editing techniques and software processes involving spectral analysis and convolution; it has been compared to the landscape paintings of caspar david friedrich, the work of colorfield artists mark rothko, barnett newman and ellsworth kelly.

during the last decade stephan's music has been released on 30 cds and vinyl records, both solo and in collaboration with akira rabelais, douglas benford, ekkehard ehlers, janek schaefer, john hudak and taylor deupree.

i'm a collector of 78rpm records from the 1910s and 20s, the era of acoustic and early electronic audio recording. i love the way they transport sound.

felix kubin & ensemble intégrales
echohaus
cd

this latest project by the hamburg-based musician, composer, and futurist, felix kubin i>(his second release on dekorder) is a collaboration with the contemporary music chamber group, ensemble intégrales, and the reknowned german underground pop producer and sound engineer, tobias levin.

echohaus was recorded in and around levin's electric avenue studio in the basement of westwerk, a former squat and cultural centre for non-commercial art and music in hamburg.  a special recording technique was developed for the project whereby the musicians played simultaneously in separate rooms, connected to one and other only by headphones. this was done in order to achieve a lively,“cinematic" sound that made use of the particular dynamics of the rooms and amplified mechanical details. the rooms, each of which had a different acoustic character, were used as natural echo chambers. kubin and the composer burkhard friedrich, former member of ensemble intégrales, provided the musicians with simple graphic scores or basic descriptions of the compositions; all subsequent material was developed on the fly. kubin was in the mixing room giving instructions and suggestions, while the musicians played and improvised, adding their own ideas to the project.

no artificial reverb or effects were added to the recordings. the different types of rooms and microphones, noises inside and outside of the studio, as well as the unusual interrelationship between the physically isolated players became part of the process. all the tracks were recorded in one take without any additional layers or track-by-track recordings. after a five-day recording session kubin and levin created various mixes which kubin then edited over a period of several months.

the final results mark yet another radical departure from kubin's trademark sci-fi pop sound, blending the aesthetics of academic contemporary music, film soundtracks and improvised music with a strong focus on room-specific natural acoustics.

felix kubin has released highly acclaimed albums on a-musik, dekorder and his own gagarin label. he has recently been featured on the front cover of the wire magazine, released his first short movie collection, directed several radio plays and is currently finishing the production on his forthcoming sci-fi pop album.

burkhard friedrich (born 1962 in berlin) is a composer of several musictheatres, film music and chamber music, performed by ensemble intégrales (d), phoenix ensemble (ch), the austrian ensemble (a) and others, saxophon player and improvising musician. he is regularly collaborating with video-artists and theatrical directors.

ensemble intégrales was founded by burkhard friedrich and barbara lüneburg. their repertoire includes classics by karlheinz stockhausen, john cage, iannis xenakis, alfred schnittke, giacinto scelsi, steve reich, alvin lucier, györgy ligeti, frederic rzewski, james tenney, morton feldman, cornelius cardew, mauricio kagel and new music from china, austria and the uk.

tobias levin is a german producer and engineer. the bands and musicians he has worked with range from pop to avantgarde, including kammerflimmer kollektief, charles curtis, to rococo rot, tied & tickled trio, christian naujoks, christoph kurzmann & john butcher, augsburger tafelconfect & lol coxhill or kreidler. he is also a founding member of legendary avant pop group cpt. kirk &.

the african twintower suite
lp

october 2005: seminal german director christoph schlingensief (r.i.p. 2010) shoots his latest feature film „the african twintowers“ in lüderitz / namibia with irm hermann, klaus beyer, robert stadlober, patti smith........

autumn 2006: schlingensief approaches berlin musician/composer hanno leichtmann (groupshow, static, denseland) regarding a soundtrack for the film. there were hours and hours of raw material; the concept being a movie with few dialogues and music throughout – a 90 minute psychedelic collage; an associative visual and sonic trip.

with the help of john nijenhuis aka sir henry as well as a trio of musicians playing indian music (tabla, sitar, tampura), they started to improvise in leichtmann’s recording studio projecting film sequences on a wall. within 4 days and nights an enormous amount of tracks had been recorded and several rough mixes had been compiled.

after a while though, schlingensief decided to shift the concept. the film transformed into an art installation with 18 monitors showing sequences simultaneously (presented at the berlinale and steirischer herbst), and later on, a kind of „making of...“ with 90% off-comments by christoph schlingensief and very little music was made.

thus, „the african twintowers suite“ represents a lost soundtrack; compiling the most interesting recordings, newly edited, layered, collaged, shortened and mixed between 2009 and 2010.

after a while though, schlingensief decided to shift the concept. the film transformed into an art installation with 18 monitors showing sequences simultaneously (presented at the berlinale and steirischer herbst), and later on, a kind of „making of...“ with 90% off-comments by christoph schlingensief and very little music was made.

thus, „the african twintowers suite“ represents a lost soundtrack; compiling the most interesting recordings, newly edited, layered, collaged, shortened and mixed between 2009 and 2010.

our love will destroy the world "i hate even numbers" lp
(limited edition of 400)

release date: october 15, 2010

parallel universes mangle and mash into a superheated cloud of galactic debris and non-recyclable plastic. after a slew of genre-confounding 7" releases, our love will destroy the world unravels his own history of nearly everything in this, the mere third full length offering under his world destroying moniker. smearing the already dotty line between twinkle-toed rave music and excoriating drone cacophony, "i hate even numbers" weighs in like a three-legged gargantuan in a one-man morris dance. blessed with a deep conviction that 'nowhere' is somewhere definitely worth going to, crippled, hobbling, clunkbeats and bubblepulses contest every frequency to the death underscored (overscored?) by mega-electrified guitar tuning exercises, shattering a passage to a brand new india. everything louder than everything else, everything dissolving in the powerful acid of the sound next to it a frybrained avalanche of audio m&ms. profound, elevating, and mercilessly, relentlessly up!

our love will destroy the world is the new one-man project by new zealander campbell kneale after disbanding birchville cat motel. in the past kneale has released albums on ecstatic peace, corpus hermeticum, last visible dog, conspiracy and his own celebrate psi phenomena label. he has colllaborated with lee ranaldo, neil campbell, bruce russel, john olson (wolf eyes), yellow swans, has toured throughout japan, europe, america and australia and also records und the names black boned angel and ming.

"i hate even numbers" is the 2nd lp by this new project for the dekorder label (his 3rd altogether) after last year's monolithic "stillborn plague angels" album.

october 2010 release ; that right theres a nice hookup :: 1/2 of my favorite contemporary a/d hybrid live electronic wranglers caboladies, working his “mass marketdebut (originally released on in-house imprint smooth tapes, remastered by robert beatty & sounding quite “huge” here) for my of my favorite contemporary labels, dekorder ...

... while all-in-all there’s less electro-stomp than on his recent dnt trip (i.e. the split/not-split 2cs with bandmate chris “flower man” bush) the folio here holds more in the way of blasted, ecclesiastic borble & more solemn zones (the sound-sample, while quite viscous, is something of a red-herring) ... given that this was recorded almost two years back it makes sense ; and in fact this glimpse into his earlier working methods reveals a less overtly “fidgetymodus, allowing the sounds to bubble & boil in place ...

... glad that these guys are finally getting out there & into the world ; highly recommended !!!

carl calm "dayglo port" lp
(limited edition of 300)

release date: october 15, 2010

carl calm ist the solo project by chicago citizen eric lanham of caboladies. "dayglo port" was recorded and mixed over two days in the tiny back bedroom of the fact house (a house chris and eric of caboladies used to live and host shows in lexington, ky) in the fall with the windows wide open and gear eliminating any floor space.

in contrast to caboladies' extensive jam-heavy explorations "dayglo port" favors a more introspective and rural atmosphere recalling the mood of seminal home electronica classics such as nuno canavarro's "plux quba", sunroof!'s "cloudz" or microstoria's "init ding".

eric lanham started playing music in 2006. his then roommate and longtime friend ben zoeller got him going and they started playing together. they then added chris bush and formed caboladies. they were enthralled with the experimental music they saw coming through lexington, ky (where they were all living) and decided to go for it. it started with pedals and feedback mangling and they eventually moved to samplers and synths. they did their first tour in 2007 with three legged race (hair police). chris and eric moved to chicago in 2009 and continued caboladies as a duo. been grooving ever since....

although they are considered one of the spearheading groups of a new age/synth revival scene in the usa along with emeralds and oneohtrix point never, caboladies have always been equally influenced by the likes of francois bayle, gil melle, bernard parmegiani, and other acousmatic composers, which clearly sets them apart from likeminded artists.

october 2010 release ; third installment in this set of turntable / cut-up pieces from inveterate musical innovator giuseppe ielasi, “made in early 2010” ...

this series has been putting me in a great place, translating the lexicon of ca. 2000 a.d. dance music (sub-bass pulse, clipped plunderphonia) into a more free-timed, upper-poly-rhythmic axis that’s far more transfixing than standard 4/floor fare ... visionary stuff.

giuseppe ielasi "(third) stunt" lp
(limited edition of 400)

release date: october 15, 2010

"(third) stunt" is the final part of a trilogy started in 2008 with the "stunt" ep on schoolmap. the series only source material is one turntable and a large selection of vinyl records; pulses and rhythms being the main organisational/compositional principles. ielasi focuses on the (audible) physical gesture of actually playing these records, a technique borrowing heavily from turntablism in hip-hop music, in contrast to the more anthropologic sampling techniques of plunderphonia. the hands-on process is important and remains audible throughout the project.

aesthetically, the stunt series has been a refreshing departure from the music ielasi has previously been identified with. there's an unexpected emphasis on rhythmic pulses, and the balance between repetition and variation as well as the overall compositional structure is very close to the structures usually found in modern dance music, making these tracks a very personal and unique sample- and texture-heavy interpretation of skeletal deep house and asymmetric cold funk.

like all previous volumes "(third) stunt" has been mastered and cut by rashad becker at dubplates & mastering, berlin and the cover photo has been shot by italian artist amedeo martegani.

giuseppe ielasi was born in 1974. he made his first marks as an improvising guitarist collaborating with the likes of thomas ankersmit, dean roberts and playing live with phill niblock, oren ambarchi, martin siewert, jerome noetinger and many others. from 2007 on, his main interest has been in site-specific solo performances, sometimes still using guitars as a primary sound source but integrating microphones and multi-channel speaker systems in order to create complex networks for sound diffusion in relationship to space. in 1998 he founded the "fringes" label (closed in 2005) and he co-founded schoolmap records in 2006.

his major solo works have been released on the 12k and häpna labels.

may 2010 release ; excellent collaborative lp between neilastral social clubcampbell and the shadowy, domestic high wolf ...

while i’m a lifer for neil’s various transgressions, the recent high wolf tape on krayon was something a revelation, and here the two do go town via an assortment of pulse-oriented electronic fizzings, culminating in the epic, side-long patrick cowley megamix “dancing in the sun” ... exemplary work !!!

iibiis rooge
s/t
lp

iibiis rooge is the new superastral duo team bringing together the mysterious high wolf (not not fun records, winged sun) with the seminal talents of mr. neil campbell, better known these days as astral social club (fat cat, vhf, qbico, important, textile, bottrop-boy and countless other labels around the globe) and (ex-) member of vibracathedral orchestra, a-band, and other obscure/legendary outfits.

the new self-titled lp is the debut album of the band (don’t call it "project") combining modern psychedelic high wolf jams with the fucked up yet refined electronics and techno-infused beat choppery of the astral social club – the result being a lot more then you might have expected from the two, transcending their combined talents into a multicoloured supernova. the strength of the album is an unexpected pop sensibility and airiness, while still being tighter and more consolidated than their regular solo outfits. even the noisier elements are embedded in loose song structures with a carnivalesque air dominating the whole atmosphere.

while the duo’s solo outings are often camouflaging any melodies in oodles of electronic noises or lo-fi psych jams and hiss this is a fairly different affair with simple melodic textures always dominating the four tracks. the defibration of structures is still apparent but the music is constantly pulling itself together again. where the astral social club is sometimes willingly losing himself in electronic soundscapes and the high wolf’s short & sketchy songs are rarely fully formulated by nature, all the positive aspects of their respective works are combined and complemented in iibiis rooge.

a visible proof that online dating can be prosperous.

the divine
lp

limited edition of 500 copies!

"the divine" marks the second phase in the trilogy proposed by john twells aka xela. crawling out of a castle dungeon in pursuit of its predecessor, "the illuminated", this lp finds itself trapped in an abandoned church somewhere in a damp southern wilderness. church bells chime and rattle through the record’s first piece, echoing and distorting through a fog of chattering voices and prayers. tape loops stumble over tape loops and the solemn, ecclesiastical drone slowly decomposes into thick, crackling noise. through the mists choirs sing, heralding the introduction of the second side of "the divine" which takes the human voice into cavernous and smudged, yet strangely alluring territories. there is almost a basinski-like charm to this work as the choirs effortlessly degrade into an unrecognisable mud of harmony and abrasiveness. this is music informed by a religious world; xela has edged from the scriptures of cults and secret societies to the spires of organisation and power. god is in the detail.

king kong ding dong
youth culture index
lp

after an extended period of dormancy, king kong ding dong returns with their first full- length album, youth culture index, recorded in various bedrooms, basements, and other amorphous dwellings over a lazy year and a half period of musical indian summer progeny. this collection of eleven tracks incorporates pieces built around samples, guitar tunings, and field reverberations. the music within relies more on pulsing percussion and sonic textures than on lyrical content.

using samplers, de-tuned guitars found in the trash, and stand-up drumming with random melodic percussion, philadelphia based group king kong ding dong make tribal, dreamy/nightmarish music with hints of pop. the music incorporates drone experimentation, whammy bar tone bending, and 4- track sound manipulation. the group shares members with a sunny day in glasgow, but does not share the same sound, instrumentation, nor set musical concept.

these are the perfect summer jams and the cd-r release has already been made "record of the week" over at aquarius records and praised by a bunch of influential online blogs. this is rock music reduced to it’s core: euphoric, charming, effortlessly smart, unstrained, willingly unhip, and unambitious in the most positive sense, summoning echoes of drag city-era early pavement or a heroin-less juvenescent royal trux with mdma replacing the opiate infusions, combined with the diy aesthetics of several not not fun and woodsist related bands.

the group has performed with:
ponytail, health, high places, the mae shi, man man, yacht, lucky dragons, these are powers, tickley feather, double dagger, soft circle

recommended for fans of:
sonic youth, the raincoats, liars, this heat, the swirlies, jandek, the monks, boxes of kittens

may 2010 release ; first widely attainable issue of raymond dijkstra’s immaculately conceived music since the self-issued / le souffleur-label 4lpverzameld werk” set from a few years back ...

l'opus l'h
lp

limited edition of 300 copies!

dutch artist/musician raymond dijkstra is one of the most radical and original composers around today. with a clear diy ethos and self-imposed restrictions he has created a singular universe all by himself. in the past 7 years he has (self-)released countless lp's, 7" , 5" & 3" vinyl releases in very tiny editions on his le souffleur label, all packaged in carefully edited artworks made by dijkstra himself.

"l'opus l'h" will be one of his first widely available releases since 2003's collaboration with timo van luijk (af ursin, noise maker's fifes, in camera, nurse with wound) as asra.

dijkstra is using a minimal set-up for all of his compositions: harmonium, scraping metal & glass, and, exclusively to his "opus" cycle the addition of tuba, strings and audio effects. he's exploring these small parameters in an improvised and highly personal, often trance-like, ecstatic setting comparable to "automatic writing" or "surrealist automatism" techniques. by offensively restricting and repeating his methods he is able to profoundly explore the depths of the particular sounds and, not least, of the player/composer's psyche itself.

"l'opus l'h" is the second title in dijkstra's series "the advantages of schizophrenia".

all my work is highly autobiographical, highly subjective and highly emotional. in this sense my work is the complete opposite of that from most musicmakers out of the experimental corner who's work is mostly without any emotion.

the reason for me making music is to strengthen my connection with life. for me my music is not experimental, simply because it was never made to experiment.

there is a bit of a problem with most experimental musicians, who are mostly only touching the surface of a subject after which they go beyond to find another experiment. i feel more connected to painters and sculptors who delve deep into the subject and explore it thoroughly, going into every possible direction, to really connect with their world. even more interesting i find it when one connects with ones own genuine personal world. just to come home to his self, instead of going out for a journey, what experimenting often is.

november 2009 release ; incredible lp of mutant psycho-junk from jani hirvonen ...

jani’s one of the few “prolifics” i can get behind ; over 7 years & dozens of low-run editions he’s mapped out a detailed floodplain of whistling bells, garbled vocals, and transcendent string-snap that’s restlessly flitting from one idea to the next, rarely staying still or rehashing older idea-sets in favor of continuous linear-path development ...

this one stays the course while delving into some nice, almost sound-art lineage combinations (listen to the sound-sample for a fine bubbling water & solemn chord-shape study) ... very nice !!!

unexplained objects
lp

limited edition of 500 copies!

"unexplained objects“ is the 3rd vinyl-only lp by finland’s uton for the dekorder label, like his previous dekorder albums released in a strictly limited edition of 500 copies in a beautiful full-colour heavy duty sleeve designed by hirvonen himself.

while the last albums explored rural soundworlds from the outer reaches of this planet and hidden places of the inner human (and animal) mind, he has finally left planet earth completely and is now reaching out for outer space and alien communication. hirvonen seems to have traveled the spaceways, bringing home folk music and field recordings from faraway planets and alien cultures. erich von däniken beware!

uton is the one-man project of jani hirvonen originally hailing from tampere. hirvonen is one of the most active musicians of the finnish underground scene that has recently presented us the likes of kuupuu, kemialliset ystävät, islaja, paavoharju and lau nau and a seemingly never-ending stream of beautiful and highly original record releases.

uton has previously released dozens of cd’s, cd-r's and cassettes on a myriad of labels including jewelled antler, pseudo arcana, last visible dog, digitalis, ruralfauna and his own ikuisuus. he has collaborated with amon dude (avarus), anla courtis (reynols), antony milton (black boned angel), ben reynolds, peter wright, phil todd (ashtray navigations) and jan anderzen (tomutonttu, kemialliset ystävät) among others. the latter collaboration (under the hevoset moniker) has been released on lp by dekorder as well.

lp

belonging to a world that is at once pre-millenial and post-apocalyptic, wooden veil’s music is the drumbeat of an ancient yet technological past channeled through the sounds of a post-human race. masked and costumed, the players invoke a musical force as a shaman would a ghost. collecting rhythm like wind collecting a storm, wooden veil gives grand form to noise – they make it an event. drums, drones, harmonies and screams clamor in their songs, erupting now and again into a plainsong that rings just long enough for a melody to take shape, before it dissolves back into sonic entropy.

- carson chan, program – initiative for art + architecture, berlin

...

playing like a semiotic mist, wooden veil approach their performances as handmade, patchwork quilt-like structures with emphasis on showing the lines of assembly, sewing together mythologies, traditional song, craft, ritual and acoustics.

- steven warwick (heatsick, birds of delay)

wooden veil is a berlin-based art group formed in 2007. inspired by the shared hauntedness of their respective homelands, they combine elements from forgotten and misremembered traditions to create a microcosmic world which only wooden veil inhabits, complete with its own symbols, clothing, food and shelters. performances, installations and videos are characterized by an expansive wardrobe of ritual dress, and the creation of shrines, relics and talismans used to create music.

the group consists of artists marcel türkowsky (also a composer, founder of snake figures arkestra, cones, uuhuu, collaborations with datashock and christoph heemann), hanayo (known for her solo work as a photographer and singer, collaborating with the likes of christoph schlingensief, merzbow, red crayola, and kai althoff), christopher kline (valkenburg hermitage, †, night music, and soft peace), dominik noé (member of krautrock legends lustfaust),  and jan pfeiffer (songs for rocks, soft peace, purple).

richard youngslike a neuron” long playing record

  • tapes of bothwell

  • alpha blue
june 2009 release ; despite all of the fore-warning (below) i’ll admit to being completely blind-sided by this new richard youngs record - not a collection of somber autumnal dirges, nor a collection of gauzy string drones, but in fact a collection of chicago house anthems, albeit with the regular 4/4 pulse replaced by an entirely free-running rhythm-grid ...

this succeeds wholly in throwing a coup i’d personally tried (in vain) for 10 years to perpetuate ; it treats the rich sound pallette of 80s / 90s dance-music merely as source-material, stripping away the robotic anchor, the melodies, the false sense(s) of euphoria and ennui, leaving only a shambolic array of twisting, dissonant string-synth lines and mis-matched chugging arpeggiations ; the ultimate miasma ...

for me this has been the jam of the summer ; highly recommended !!!

richard youngs
like a neuron
lp

richard youngs is a prolific british musician (located in glasgow) with an extremely diverse output. his new album for dekorder might not be a surprise to anyone following his career. still, a self-proclaimed all-electronicecstatic house record” comes somewhat unexpected. with a line of distinctive synthesizers often used for techno/house music youngs recreates the energy, euphoria and frenzy of these styles without ever trying to recreate the music note by note.

the final outcome sounds like recordings made by aliens who have received transmissions about house music but never listened to the music itself. the album reminds of the sound of hallways/corridors inbetween large house parties where you can hear the music from several floors collide. while it’s an emulation, interpretation or replica of house music, it’s still managing to evoke similar feelings even though some might find it difficult to dance to the music.

in the past, youngs has released several albums on a dozen labels such as vhf, jagjaguwar, table of the elements, gipsy sphinx, majora, chocolate monk, celebrate psi phenomena, fusetron and his own no fans outlet. he has collaborated with neil campbell (aka astral social club), matthew bower, simon wickham-smith and many others and was a member of the a-band and has performed live and in the studio with sunroof! and skullflower. additionally, youngs played bass for jandek, appearing on three of his live records/dvd’s.

june 2009 release ; finally, the debut album from danish musician mikkel moir pihl, after a series of mini-cds for the dekorder label, strewn out over the past decade ...

i have a soft-spot for this sort of non-denominational electronic pop music ; while certain passages remind me more than a little of anthony manning’s string of excellent bedroom “modern composition” albums for irdial, this is by-and-large in its own orbit, rarely touching down to any known genre-maps ... one minute it sounds much like the ventures’ “live in japan ‘65” played on an mpc by hand, the next a warp-speed take on the kind(s) of synclavier-worship most commonly associated with the liquid sky soundtrack ...

either way it’s pure win ; one of the more oddly compelling records i’ve heard this year ...

voks
astra & knyst
lp

voks aka mikkel moir pihl from copenhagen, denmark is a household name on dekorder, being signed to the label since its inception six years ago. though keeping a low profile with only two 3" cd releases in all these years he won over some dedicated fans such as the late john peel, who shortly before his death played a different voks track every week for several weeks in a row.

now voks is finally presenting his first full-length album (though only 30 minutes long this is epic in voks' universe - both 3"cd's included 10 tracks each within 20 minutes). while keeping his trademark style of hyperactive and nervous high-pitched twisted pop songs a newborn interest in (italo-western) movie soundtracks seems to be evident. the sound of super fast surf guitars is colliding with what seems chinese opera samples, world music is combined with children's whisteling tunes. think raymond scott, joe meek, ennio morricone or carl stalling collaborating with the residents and then getting an 8-bit remix by the aphex twin.

a surprising & amazing record, really! it will leave a huge grin on your face (and a few question marks as well)....

xelathe illuminated” long playing record

  • black scripture (19:57)

  • gilted rose (20:02)
february 2009 release ; amazing misc of minimal, bell-laced drones & swelling black metal from johnxelatwells ; reissuing the titular digitalis tape ...

despite the recent en masse embrace of the coffin-scratch production spec (razor-thin guitars, lumbering drum machine, a general over-use of multiple gain stages) none of this comes across as anything other than a love letter to the form ; the marriage of the more “psychedelic” layers to the thin mist never forced ... excellent !!!

xela
the illuminated
lp

the music of xela is not easily described. the alias of type records main-man john twells, he has over the last decade moved through a dense fog of musical styles from abstract electronics to rusty soundscapes. in recent years his output has allied itself with darker realms, taking a liberal dose of influence from norway's darker exponents, but retaining a deep and measured experimental focus.

"the illuminated" was originally released on cassette, a format very fitting to the gloomy, waterlogged sounds; but having sold out in a matter of days it now recieves the much needed deluxe re-issue treatment. taking cues from the cracked black metal of burzum and striborg and fusing this with heavy, synthesized noise "the illuminated" is possibly xela's darkest, most spine-chilling work to date. we are taken through chiming nurse with wound-inspired soundscapes into middle eastern marketplaces and through caverns of thick, buzzing synthesized noise  on the album's first piece. entitled "black scripture" this takes the dank religious themes of "in bocca al lupo" and goes even deeper into the church dungeons, digging up lost artifacts and the angry spirits that accompany them. the flipside extends this heresy with a throaty  vocal and distorted electric guitar, leaving blackened corpses and the traces of a sleepy village in its wake. devastating and dark material, listen if you dare ...

our love will destroy the worldstillborn plague angels” long playing record

  • stillborn plague angels (10:30)
  • pink hollow paradise (9:30)

  • chinese emperors and the army of eternity (11:45)
  • over prehistoric texas (8:15)
february 2009 release ; debut full-length from this new, post-bcm project from campbell kneale ...

while the prior dirty knobby single was full of looping idm beats, they’re nowhere to be found here ; instead the familiar mix of late-period birchville’s crushing drones & the scorched-earth peal of black boned angel’s harsh guitar walls is in effect, yielding inarguably the harshest set of pieces i’ve heard from campbell yet, akin to a more orchestrated take on hototogisu’s approach ...

a marked improvement from the aforementioned single, one of of the best sides i’ve heard from cambpell in recent times ...

our love will destroy the world
stillborn plague angels
lp

the gates of birchville cat motel crack, creak wide, and crash, unleashing a gush of soul-fried bleakness and love-damage stained with a defiantly metallic pose. that’s "metallic... as in, has the surface qualities of metal" not "metal... as in, has the surface qualities of metallica"... step back you fucking freaks.

although the broken bricks of bcm are still plain to see amid the burning wreck and ruin, 'stillborn plague angels' represents the first fully formed sentence in a new chapter of campbell kneale's ongoing tome of star-spangled, psychedelic, noise-om. cholesterol-shaving guitar peeks over the trench to survey an adrenalised landscape of endless roaring catastrophy... everything louder than everything else!

our love will destroy the world is the new one-man project by new zealander campbell kneale after disbanding birchville cat motel. in the past kneale has released albums on ecstatic peace, corpus hermeticum, last visible dog, conspiracy and his own celebrate psi phenomena label. he has colllaborated with lee ranaldo, neil campbell, bruce russel, john olson (wolf eyes), yellow swans, has toured throughout japan, europe, america and australia and also records und the names black boned angel and ming.

stillborn plague angels“ is the debut lp by this new project.

october 2008 release ; you know, i’m really starting to come around re: this zuydervelt fellow ... this is an impeccable set of pieces, really nicely done waves of drone-sound with tons of added crackle & almost imperceivable background movement, rife with the same sorts of “off-centervibrato / warble that made us all fawn over those boards of canada records all those years back ...
dekorder press release...
[029] machinefabriek "dauw" cd

machinefabriek is the alias for rutger zuydervelt currently residing in rotterdam, the netherlands. since 2004 zuydervelt has unleashed an uncountable number of self-released 3"cd's (his format of choice) in lovingly designed sleeves (all made by himself). in the past years some of these releases have been compiled into amazing albums such as "slaapzucht" on the root strata label, "weleer" on lampse, the "cello recycling" 10"/cd on type records and "bijeen" on kning disk. recent collaborations with stephen vietiello (on the 12k label), freiband, steinbrüchel and other likeminded artists have expanded the horizon veritably. machinefabriek's music has been remixed by the likes of xela, lesser, svarte greiner, alva noto, pita, kim cascone, ben frost, black to comm and others.

only few machinefabriek material has been recorded specifically for an album release but these have always been stand-outs in the vast catalogue. both "marijn" on lampse and "ranonkel" on burning world records were classic recordings, squeezing a large amount of what people love about zuydervelt's music into one album, at the same time giving him the space to expand on new ideas. likewise "dauw" is one of zuydervelt's most subtle & quiet yet refined works. mainly built around small but gorgeous melodies of piano and guitar playing and the crackling sound of dusty vinyl samples, these songs slowly build into intensive hymn-like angel choirs of sheer heavenly beauty.

zuydervelt's output often has drawn comparisons to the likes of fennesz, godspeed, arvo pärt, basinski, tim hecker, phillip jeck, mogwai and earth, which is certainly not all wrong and some of these have been influences in the early stages of his career but he has since developed a strong and individual language all of his own.

mastered by giuseppe ielasi with elegant artwork by zuydervelt himself; metallic print on grey cardboard stock.

[026] daniel padden "pause for the jet" lp

since 1995 daniel padden has been a member of volcano the bear, with several highly regarded album releases on nurse with wound's united diaries label, textile and beta-lactam ring records. after his move to glasgow he started the one ensemble of daniel padden as an outlet for his solo recordings with releases on catsup plate, secret eye and textile. when the one ensemble slowly metamorphosed into a band of its own, padden started to record his solo output under his birth name, with last year's "the isaac storm" on the ultra exzema label being the first seminal result.

over the years padden has developed a strong fascination for obscure musics from all over the world (re his recent "epiphanies" article for the wire magazine): mouth organ love-songs from thailand, the ramayana monkey chant from bali, khene pieces from laos; so-called world music from burundi to bulgaria.

combining these interests with his love for british folk and art rock (this heat, robert wyatt), kraut rock (faust), free jazz, the surreal collage techniques of nurse with wound and the odd humour of the residents, he has developed a totally unique and highly personal musical vision without ever sounding overambitious or directionless. gorgeous song-writing is seamlessly transformed into pure fuzz or string drones, suddenly interrupted by some improvised reeds or collapsing percussion, all within the blink of an eye, and never losing its natural flow, "pause for the jet" is already an auspicious aspirant for our "record of the year".

[025] uton - straight edge xxs  lp

"straight edge xxs" is the 2nd vinyl album by finland's uton released in a strictly limited edition of 500 copies on the dekorder label. it comes in a gorgeous full-colour collage sleeve assembled by hirvonen himself. while uton's last dekorder album "alitaju ylimina" (and most of his other recorded works respectively) are hazy lo-fi drone masterpieces for the most part, this is a completely different affair.

recorded straight to tape within one month, right after returning from a 6-month trip to india, these songs (if you could call them songs) are completely out-of-this-world; very short and crazed sketch-like pieces sounding like a nonesuch explorer lp of long lost field recordings from an as yet unexplored continent. or is it world music from an unknown planet recorded by those sublime frequencies guys from mysterious short wave transmissions? well, it is all that and more. it is pure ecstatic expression channelized through psychedelia, free jazz, noise and rural ancient folk music from all over the world in a completely naked, predominantly acoustic setting. one of the purest forms of music you could imagine; while all the familiar uton elements remain evident in a hazy backcloth.

uton is the one-man project of jani hirvonen originally hailing from tampere. hirvonen is one of the most active musicians of the finnish underground scene that has recently presented us the likes of kuupuu, kemialliset ystävät, islaja, paavoharju and lau nau and a seemingly never-ending stream of beautiful and highly original record releases. uton has previously released dozens of cd's, cd-r's and cassettes on a myriad of labels including jewelled antler, pseudo arcana, last visible dog, digitalis, ruralfauna and his own ikuisuus. he has collaborated with amon dude (avarus), anla courtis (reynols), antony milton (black boned angel), ben reynolds, peter wright, phil todd (ashtray navigations) and jan anderzen (tomutonttu, kemialliset ystävät) among others. the latter collaboration (under the hevoset moniker) is released on lp by dekorder simultaneously.

[024] hevoset - s/t  lp

hevoset is the duo of two of the most enigmatic individuals of the finnish underground, namely jan anderzen and jani hirvonen, both hailing from tampere. anderzen is ringleader of a mysterious multitudinous beast known as kemialliset ystävät (fonal records), a part-time member of avarus and islaja and records solo as tomutonttu (ultra exzema, beta-lactam ring records) with a new album coming out on dekorder this year (hopefully). hirvonen is best-known under his uton monicker with two lp's on dekorder and a stream of releases on last visible dog, digitalis, ruralfauna, jewelled antler, pseudo arcana and his own ikuisuus label.

while most one-off meetings between so-called experimental and improvising musicians often sound like bad excuses for a few beers and endless jams this is quite the opposite - a heavy weight championship finale of two like-minded whizkids cross-fertilizing each other with idea after idea, leading to some of the weirdest and quixotic recordings you will have heard of the two. everything you loved about kemialliset ystävät, uton and tomutonttu is contained in hevoset ..... and more. rural psychedelia, out-of-tune plucked and strummed strings, overloaded organs and effect pedals, jani hirvonen's sweet wordless vocals, ecstatic improvised drone collages, bells, backward loops, jungle percussion and tons of unidentifiable sounds and noises shaped into tight 4 - 6 minute tracks.

[023] antonia leukers “hasenlove” picture-disc lp (limited 300)

"hasenlove" is the debut musical release of hamburg visual artist antonia leukers. she's a founding member of "institut hasenbart", a 10-piece artist collective dedicated to a meta-scientific research of hares and related social, zoological and aesthetical phenomena in reference to the art world and pop culture. leukers has previously created stitched, sewed and animated sculptures while casually growing cucumbers, working for a local in-vitro fertilization hospital and advising young people on erotic issues as a german dr. ruth for a popular online magazine. inspired by a journey to island, hearing local travel guides spontaneously interweaving their narrations with sudden outbursts of folklore chanting and an encounter with wolfgang müller's (die tödliche doris) strategy of transforming and combining his (pseudo-)scientific, documentary and social research into a musical and artistic performance she started to elaborate her fellow artist's lectures with musical renditions.

as a passionate diy home-recording artist she has soldered her own microphones, used cheap toy instruments, gameboys and minidisc recordings of kitchen sounds to create her very own bricolage comic universe. by recycling corny aor mainstream rock/pop songs into some oddly disturbing and wonderfully weird rabbit love songs with newly-made german lyrics and combining these with some truly strange original compositions (ranging from freeform collage to distorted techno to deranged singer/songwriter stuff), she has created a musical love story in 7 parts. spiritually influenced by (though not really sounding alike) german "neue deutsche welle" artists such as der plan and theatrical and surreal performance bands like the residents.

her versions of popular love songs sound like a teenage/female andrew lloyd webber on bad acid. this 1-sided vinyl-only picture-disc lp is a strictly limited edtion of 300 copies. both the gorgeous design and ornamental etching on the b-side have been done by fellow hasenbart founding member renate nikolaus.

[022] felix kubin und das mineralorchester "music for theatre and radio play" lp

we are extremely excited to announce the 1st collaboration between the dekorder label and our old friend, local conspirator and private hair gardener felix kubin.

kubin has achieved world wide reputation by releasing post-dadaist, futuristic ndw-influenced organ&korg smash hits on his own gagarin label, on a-musik, ski-pp, meeuw, diskono et al. he has collaborated with people like us, coolhaven, mark boombastik, asmus tietchens, ensemble intégrales, david fenech, ergo phizmiz, boris d. hegenbart, wojtek kucharczyk and many others. his first recordings date back to his teenage years in the early 1980's, followed by his electroacoustic noise duo klangkrieg and the pseudo-communist liedertafel margot honecker.

right from the start felix kubin has written and recorded music for films (hence the title of his first album) by the likes of mariola brillowska and anke feuchtenberger and continues the german tradition of "hörspiel" (radio play) with works such as "territerrortorium", "nachtspeicher", "orpheuspsykotron" and "syndikat für gegenlärm" (with guest appearances by matmos, dat politics and wolfgang müller of die tödliche doris).

some of kubin's most gorgeous and adventurous works are his contributions to "the raft" (a radio play by the mysterious xentos bentos of the homosexuals, directed by lukas simonis of coolhaven, trespassers w, dull schicksal) and his soundtracks for theatre plays by branko simic ("zufall", based on a short story by vladimir nabokov) and the notorious schorsch kamerun. the latter (known in germany as a member of goldene zitronen) directed "hollywood elegien" based on a song cycle by bert brecht and hanns eisler. now the best parts of these works are for the first time available on lp and cd, simply (and aptly) titled "music for theatre and radio play".

while the musical spectrum on this release covers a variety of styles and moods it’s still almost immediately recognisable as a typically kubin-ist work featuring the main ingredients his records and body-and-mind-boggling live shows are famous for. twisted rhythms & playfully clever arrangements that could have been created by a mutated reincarnation of the legendary juan esquivel; hauntingly ethereal tracks sounding like a narcoleptic john carpenter playing angelo badalamenti arrangements; contorted big band music, pre-war schlager and vaudeville sent through a malfunctioning pre-digital time machine; ennio morricone cloned as a russian male choir; instrumental workers' songs hanns eisler might have imagined in a feverish nightmare  - it’s all there, and more!

[021] black to comm / aosuke split-lp

limited edition of 500 copies!

this vinyl-only split-lp release is a meeting of two of the most interesting bands coming out of hamburg, germany at this moment, both continuing the long tradition of both challenging and explorative music coming from this city in the last decades. from krautrock to the origins of the so-called neue deutsche welle from experimental sound artists to some of the finest pop ambient, hamburg is regularly spitting out some of the most singular artists on this planet. both aosuke and black to comm have absorbed influences from all these sources (and a million others) while working towards their very own individual vision.

the two brand new tracks by black to comm are continuing the massive organ/voice drone alchemy of the last double-lp while refining and personalizing his sound, reaching new heights of blazing sonic mysticism.

aosuke have decided to home-record their new material, continuing their loop-oriented, monotone yet highly melodic ambient journeys. working with repetition and small abstractions, all instrumental "loops" are played by hand and recorded live without overdubs (one of the main principles of the guitar/electronics duo), creating surprisingly concrete dormant and somnambulistic soundscapes while fortunately completely lacking the washy and drowsy effects of most ambient music.

black to comm is the one-man project of marc richter who is the brain behind the dekorder label as well. so far he has released two albums on his own label ("rückwärts backwards" and "wir können leider nicht etwas mehr zu tun...").

aosuke is the duo of tobert knopp and ulf schütte, the latter being a label head as well (tape tektoniks). last year they have released their debut "monotone spirits" album co-released by hamburg's audiolith label and south germany's meudiademorte label.

utonalitaju ylimina” long playing record

dekorder press release...
[020] uton "alitaju ylimina" lp

limited edition of 500 copies!

"alitaju ylimina" is the first vinyl album by finland's uton released in a strictly limited edition of 500 copies in a marvellous fold-out sleeve with a full-colour drawing by uton himself on the outer sleeve and some fierce black&white illustrations by dutch artist christelle gualdi inside.

uton is the one-man project of jani hirvonen originally hailing from tampere and currently travelling and recording in india. hirvonen is one of the most active musicians of the finnish underground scene that has recently presented us the likes of kuupuu, kemialliset ystävät, islaja, paavoharju and lau nau and a seemingly never-ending stream of beautiful and highly original record releases.

the music of uton is no exception there, drawing inspirations from psychedelia to free jazz to pure ecstatic drones and noises using a wide range of acoustic instruments from various parts of the globe and a bulk of electronics. recorded in glorious lo-fi the mystery of hirvonen’s sound is difficult to pinpoint; sheer ravishing beauty, elegancy and variegation is stashed behind a wall of grey, inscrutable haze – gorgeous melodies and voices, reeds and alien sounds gleaming through the mist from time to time, shimmering like diamonds through layers of dust.

uton has previously released dozens of cd’s, cd-r's and cassettes on a myriad of labels including jewelled antler, pseudo arcana, last visible dog, digitalis and his own ikuisuus. he has collaborated with amon dude (avarus), anla courtis (reynols), antony milton (black boned angel), ben reynolds, peter wright, phil todd (ashtray navigations) and jan anderzen (tomutonttu, kemialliset ystävät) among others. the latter collaboration (under the hevoset moniker) will be released on lp by dekorder later this year.

[018] kuupuu "unilintu" lp

"unilintu" is the second of two vinyl-only lp's on the dekorder label compiling the best material from kuupuu’s first four cd-r and cassette releases, this time presenting a slightly darker and even more coherent sonic vision compared to last year’s gorgeous "yökehrä" lp which we sold out immediately (2nd edition is now available).

here’s what we said about the first lp:

jonna karanka aka kuupuu is one of the main movers of the (deservedly) much hyped finnish psychedelic free folk scene. originally hailing from tampere she is known as a core member of avarus, anaksimandros, kukkkiva poliisi and maniacs dream. additionally, she has recently started hertta lussu ässä with lau nau and islaja and has collaborated with tomutonttu (aka jan anderzen of kemialliset ystävät) and paavi (as lussu ja paavi).

this lp is a beautifull collection of haunting (sometimes spooky) home baked freeform folk songs, strange lo-fi loops, vocal drones and psychedelic cut-ups, made using weirdly tuned plucked and strummed strings, bells, clattery percussion, unidentifiable wind instruments, backwards tape loops and a ton of other noisemakers all played and recorded by herself; accompanied by her distinctive voice (often looped and layered) with vocals sung and whispered in her native finnish language making the whole atmosphere even more haunting and mysterious. jonna karanka creates an intimate space where the listener feels like sitting next to her in a small chamber or outside in the woods where kuupuu sings a lullaby just for him.

[017] john hegre "colors don't clash" cd

finally, here it is! an album we’ve been waiting for since starting the label a few years ago and it was worth waiting every minute. while maintaining a busy release and tour schedule with jazzkammer (now called jazkamer, a duo with lasse marhaug) which recently included their new glorious metal album for smalltown supersound (aptly titled „metal music machine“), the „panic“ cd on the bottrop-boy label and concerts all over the world (including south america, south east asia, japan, etc.), his marvellous „ballads“ duo album with maja ratkje on dekorder and countless other collaborative projects, he has been working on his solo debut album whenever time allowed.

returning to his original instrument the electric guitar, hegre has produced an extremely diverse album mutating from hypnotic computer-loop drones to some glorious free analogue noise, from abstract banjo-like sketches to thick washes of sludgy doom metal and roaring noise rock, from divine electroacoustic sounds to otherworldly country-esque and classical guitar picking, all within one track, and often all at once, with small and simple melodies lurking within huge drifts of sound. and not one element sounds out of place here, it’s rather like the collages of seemingly inappropriate bits and pieces create a totally unique surreal and creepy atmosphere. dozens of small details suddenly appear from nowhere, transforming even the most brutal noise attacks into complex textural arrangements, making this the most essential guitar album of the year.

the title? it´s a quotation from the late philip charles lithman aka snakefinger. at the end of an interview for the july number of the norwegian music magazine puls in 1987 he was asked if he had any final message for the norwegian people, and he did, his message was "colors don´t clash, don´t worry they never do". he died of a heart attack on july 1st, same day as his single "there´s no justice in life" was released.

"yökehrä" is the first of two vinyl-only lp's on the dekorder label compiling the best material from her first four cd-r and cassette releases, all of which immediately became much sought after collector's items, fetching ridicolous prices on the ebay market.

this lp is a beautifull collection of haunting (sometimes spooky) home baked freeform folk songs, strange lo-fi loops, vocal drones and psychedelic cut-ups, made using weirdly tuned plucked and strummed strings, bells, clattery percussion, unidentifiable wind instruments, backwards tape loops and a ton of other noisemakers all played and recorded by herself; accompanied by her distinctive voice (often looped and layered) with vocals sung and whispered in her native finnish language making the whole atmosphere even more haunting and mysterious. jonna karanka creates an intimate space where the listener feels like sitting next to her in a small chamber or outside in the woods where kuupuu sings a lullaby just for him.

we're proud to say that this has to be one of the most exciting debut albums of the year.

[015] john hegre / maja ratkje "ballads" cd

"ballads" ist the first collaborative album by two key figures of the norwegian noise, improv, experimental, whatever-you-call-it music scene. anyone expecting a rackety wall of distorted feedback guitars and voices will be gently surprised though by the sparse and intimate sketches to be found on this wonderful record. songs are stripped down to their raw bones using only the most essential elements to reveal the soul behind every single sound. superfluous effects seem to be completely absent, creating an open space for miniscule details, always ready to implode into noisier tracks such as "private matter". the album culminates in "hammock moods", a quietly mesmerizing epic finale with maja ratkje humming a beautiful melody over hegre's gorgeous near-psychedelic guitar playing. let's all hope for a sequel to this album!

maja ratkje is a member of spunk (rune grammofon) and noise duo fe-mail. her solo album "voice" (produced in collaboration with jazzkammer) got an award of distinction at prix ars electronica in 2003. in 2001 she was the first composer ever to receive the arne nordheim distinction award. she has collaborated with jaap blonk, ikue mori, otomo yoshihide, wolf eyes, matmos, lasse marhaug, jason forrest, kim hiortoy, ulver and many others.

john hegre is a member of jazzkammer / jazkamer (smalltown supersound), kaptein kaliber, golden serenades, new boiling near the fjords (with members of alog) and others. his first solo 3"cd came out on dekorder in 2003. jazkamer will release their aptly titled new album "metal music machine" in spring 2006 and hegre is working on an as yet untitled solo album for dekorder.

[014] black to comm "rückwärts backwards" lp/cd

black to comm is an alias for dekorder label owner marc richter's audio excursions. "rückwärts backwards" is his debut full-length album recorded between 2003 and 2005 in his adopted hometown hamburg and his childhood home in the black forest located in the south of germany. with a background in many musical styles (from psychedelia to pure computer music) btc's music is never easy to pin down.

this album is essentially created from scratchy shellac and vinyl loops merged with ambience field recordings (with some voice manipulations and kitchen gamelan thrown in for good measure). the warm hiss of analogue recording techniques combined with the apparently antique sounds of vintage organs, acoustic & electric guitars, pianos, glockenspiel and mbira used on these tracks generate a kind of hyperreal, fake nostalgia playing with one's perception of a pseudo-recollection. the layering and hypnotic repetition of short loops extracted from old psychedelia, free jazz, vaudeville and traditional records reveal a haunting melodic quality sometimes not distinguishable within the original source material, evoking a hovering feeling of bittersweet melancholy with an omnipresent, slightly disturbing atmosphere hidden beneath the surface.

the 8 songs constantly sway back and forth between simple, almost naive arrangements and dense surrreal drones with rare, yet intense distorted climaxes making this album one constantly absorbing listening experience.

[013] guido möbius "dishoek" lp

guido möbius is a man on the go. out of his berlin officerecordingstudio he operates the autopilot music publishing house and promotes record labels such as sonig, smalltown supersound and klangbad. additionally he runs the small emphase label releasing among other things a 7" series of 1-instrument music and the last album by anne laplantine. and first and foremost he is a musician, now concentrating on his solo work and live appearances with bass player alexej gottschau after playing in various band formations.

two years ago his solo debut "klisten" had the press and music lovers everywhere turn somersaults when hearing this wonderfully whimsical smorgasbord of countless tiny sounds and instruments. all material on "klisten" had been strangely interwoven, laminated and set against each other yet always remaining songs, almost pop. and despite all the complexity and craftiness it never sounded difficult, academic or pompous. one could dive into this music or simply move within it and discover a new plant behind each corner. but one would never be led astray by it. and if you walked the same path a few days later suddenly new buds had grown and someone might have carved a few weird symbols into the trees.

and just before we started to miss guido möbius he surprises us with "dishoek", his second album, recorded for hamburg’s dekorder label. again featuring a conglomeration of acoustic and electrical instruments (guitar, bass, violin, cornet drums, synthesizer, clarinet among other things.) and a variety of guests, so that one hardly dares to call it a solo album. still everything is magically held together by one single person. melodies and noises, styles and individual characteristics, intelligence and humour collide and become friends for live. we hear krautrock minus rock, folk minus tronics, pop minus popular; psychedelia meets improvisation meets electronica without the slightest know-it-all approach. styles get intermingled, copulate and finally dissolve completely to become only music without the need to be labelled because it is functioning completely within its own context and never fails to astonish. the computer remains a tool, never an end in itself and the alleged separation of acoustic and electronic music becomes completely obsolete. with its wily down-to-earth approach "dishoek" proves that an eagerness to experiment and the will to explore unknown territories do not have to sound arduous yet always have the ability to gently surprise any adventurous listener.

tu m’ is a duo from città sant' angelo, a small village in central italy. emiliano romanelli and rossano polidoro have started tu m’ in 1998 (named after marcel duchamp’s last painting) and since then released several critically acclaimed records on labels such as phtalo, ers/staalplaat, fällt, aesova and boxmedia. they have recently started steno with frank metzger of oval (debut lp coming soon on the en/of label). they have collaborated with steve roden for an album release on rossbin and are currently working with simon fisher turner on some new tracks to be included on his forthcoming album on mute records.

additionally they run the cd-label mr. mutt (another duchamp reference) and curate the mp3-label tu m’p3 releasing soundtracks to webcam pictures by a diverse range of artists such as donna summer, dälek, chris cutler, noel akchote, farmers manual, voice crack, alan licht, david grubbs and dekorder artists such as voks, un caddie renversé dans l’herbe and black to comm.

their new album titled "just one night" still contains their trademark improvisations on guitars, alto sax, flutes, toy keyboards, alto flugelhorn, percussion, harmonica, etc. looped, processed and edited into compositions, combined with field recordings and the odd vinyl sample used occassionally. these raw materials are sculpted into beautifully melancholic songs all dealing with the "night" theme, making this their most coherent album yet.

the album has been mastered by marcus schmickler (pluramon, mimeo, etc.). a new track by tu m’ has appeared on the latest wire tapper compilation.

[009] pxp "nada" cd

what is pxp?

pxp is the short identifier of the department for penetration and perversion, a farmersmanual subunit located at [http://wrzk.web.fm/]. necessarily in the spirit of the superunit the department's activities touch a wide range of areas with interleaving methodology and the sonic mapping of which being one subset. the topics being covered might be distilled to exploration of dynamic and selforganizing structures.

what is nada?

nada is the second realworld manifestation in the shape of an audio cd precipitated by pxp on impulse of hamburg based experimental music label dekorder. much in the style of an earlier work , "while(p){print"."," "x$p++}", wavetrap, 2002, which has received an honourable mention in digital musics at ars electronica the same year for being perceived as "a jutting mass of digitized disturbance that fueled our direct reckoning with destabilized mathematics" by the jury, nada represents a snapshot of the landscape a couple of metamorphoses further down the same n-dimensional road, 5 < n < infty/2, but giving in to a slight pull from self-sufficient, specialized systems living in close proximity to more open, general purpose communication networks.

[007] un caddie renversé dans l'herbe "like a packed cupboard but quite..." lp/cd

the curiously titled „like a packed cupboard but quite...“ is the 2nd release for the dekorder label by un caddie renversé dans l’herbe a.k.a. dídac p. lagarriga from barcelona, spain after his beautiful 3“cd „now there’s a weird taste in my mouth“.

not unlike his previous works which have been compared to the likes of pascal comelade, asa chang & junray, penguin café orchestra and steve beresford, the album’s using repetition and simplicity, melody and warmth, charm and a positive naivity to create an addictive, often hypnotic muzak; never overloaded, full of space for tiny surprising ideas/sounds and little elements and influences to unfold their inner beauty. this is contemporary and timeless music without the urge to be (post-) modern just for the sake of being so.still featuring the unusual but fascinating combination of african instruments such as the balaphon, mbira, kalimba, berimbau with modern software, piano, cello, guitar, bass, melodica, chimes, the overall theme of the album is a direct reaction to the widely used (and misleading) term of „exotica“ often found in the writings about lagarriga’s music and other so-called „world music“. often used by our beloved „1st world“ to create a pseudo-romantic marketing niche these terms have become empty labels for cultures we don’t know too well or are too lazy to learn about without accepting the fact that everything everywhere is (or, at least, can be) influenced by anything else. we are not living in a hermetic capitalized surrounding but too often act as if we are...

lagarriga’s music is neither „world music“ nor „exotica“ but simply a music that is trying to be inclusive, embracing everything happening around him (be it music, art, writing and/or simply, and most important, everyday life) in contrast to the often encased exponents of „our“ western culture, without denying the fact that all of us (including lagarriga and, well, myself) are personally thinking and acting within those stereotypes way too often (unfortunately).
