«header_change»

norbert möslang // computer

«header_change» is the latest installment in norbert möslang´s long-running work in the transmutation of light into sound. the title refers to the practice of changing the values in the header code of a data file. in this case, möslang changed the headers of video stills from swiss video artist silvie defraoui to create sound files. at the invitation of defrauoi for her reception of an arts prize granted by the city of st. gallen, möslang pressed these audio files to vinyl and mixed them live.

these files also became the basis for the seven compositions on «header_change,» a work of slowly evolving textures, hacking across frequencies of light into sound.

norbert möslang is a visual artist and musician living in st. gallen, switzerland. his activities include audio and video installations, photography, works for internet, improvisation and composition using «everyday cracked electronics.»

debut solo release from english computer-music composer joe gilmore (under his given, at least) ; a set of 5 pieces sourced to improvisation(s), deftly assembled into ringing, detail-heavy clusters of digital sound.

i haven’t made it all the way through a disc of non-hecker contemporary computer music in a while; yet i’ve been compelled to give this a number of spins this morning alone. excellent stuff.

«on quasi-convergence and quiet spaces»

«on quasi-convergence and quiet spaces» is assembled from a series of edited solo computer improvisations executed between 2002-04. the direct-to-disk recordings were often by-products of custom generative and performance-based patches developed for group improvisations. in december 2006 these recordings were revisited after producing similar soundfiles for a site-specific performance exploring the acoustic properties of the holy trinity church in leeds (uk). the material from these sessions was edited and shaped into a coherent whole during january 2007. the work explores the relationship between self and group (other); improvisation and composition at different temporal and physical locations. «on quasi-convergence and quiet spaces» consists of five focused, evolving pieces, which combine rich textural swathes of sound and intricate shimmering tones with dark, organic abstract structures.

joe gilmore is a sound artist and graphic designer living in england. he has been working with sound since 1994, composing works for cd, performance and installation. his work has been published on numerous labels including 12k/line, alku, fällt and entr'acte. he is co-founder of rand()%, an automated internet radio station which streams real-time algorithmic music.

«reframed»

originally a drummer, günter müller continues his exploration of the instrument's inherent resonant properties in five compositions based on processed recordings of bowed cymbals. «reframed» achieves a sense of timelessness, placing the listener deep within hovering layers of shimmering sound. recorded july 2006. processed and assembled august–december 2006.

günter müller was born in münchen in 1954, and has lived in switzerland since 1966. müller has been playing a unique drum set with a mobile pick-ups and a microphone system of his own invention since 1981. the system allows hand generated sounds on drums and percussion to be modulated electronically. since 1998 minidiscs, later an ipod, are included in his electronic set. he performs solo and has collaborated with a large number of musicians, including jim o'rourke, christian marclay, butch morris, otomo yoshihide, taku sugimoto, keith rowe and sachiko m. in 1990, he founded the record label for 4 ears records.

an amazing bit of process music/sound-art from voice crack’s norbert möslang... the buzzing of fluorescent lights made further audible through an ingenious array of contact microphones and dedicated digital hardware (which merely augments existing sonorities in static ways rather than completely voiding them.) the resultant din is that of a massive wall of pure, unadorned electricity; something you’ll want to bathe in over and over again (i’m on my fourth continuous listen.) killer...

«capture»

“capture” documents the audio portion of a light and sound installation of the same name exhibited by norbert möslang in feldkirch, austria in 2004. a bank of fluorescent lights amplified by contact microphones and processed through a pc104 single board computer with software programmed specially for this hardware provide the audio source to the recording of “capture.”
