| | | collectables (usa) #col 6612 cd sonny sharrock / wayne henderson “black woman / people get ready” compact disc - black woman
- peanut
- bialero
- blind willy
- portrait of linda in three colors - all black
- (plus the wayne henderson record)
| herein lies the fault of the collectables label’s manifesto... why exactly you’d pair sonny & linda’s mind-melt burner with what’s essentially a slightly above-average sounding late 60s soul-jazz-funk tread (henderson’s “people get ready”) is quite beyond the scope anyone familiar with the former. regardless, glad black woman is available in a tangible, semi easy to find form.
in the pantheon of out-guitar, sharrock can certainly be deemed the grand/god-father. this was his first album as a leader (originally on the vortex label) after guesting on miles’ jack johnson and pharoah’s tauhid (i actually transcribed the guitar parts of this entire record during my berklee years, in an attempt to ‘find myself’. no shit). his playing warms icy depths with high-intent fingers. linda’s yalp intones great astral mirth. milford graves and dave burrell guest, their playing is spot on, masterful.
a bold statement & a giddy head rush of damn fine sonorities. burning... |
