2009 release ; ... inspiring set of contemporary solo improvisations from fmp / saj (the latter being the monogram-oriented fmp sub-label he ran throughout the 70’s & 80’s) mainstay (debuting via brotzmann’s totemic “for adolphe sax” in 1967, & continuing on “machine gun”, & many set with pianist alex schlippenbach, rudiger carl, alfred harth, phil minton, and many others) ; consisting largely of textural, extended-technique studies (and, yes, a bit of straight-time vamping towards the end) ...

sven-åke johansson - cymbals in the night

this all acoustic solo record very often sounds electronic, but don't let sven-ake johansson's deftness with extended percussion techniques lead you to believe that the drummer who played on peter brotzmann's for adolphe sax and machine gun has simply jumped aboard the lower-case improv bandwagon.

there's a fun and exuberance with which johansson rubs cardboard to produce the complex sounds of tapes speeding out of control, brushes the teeth of his drums, and bows cymbals that really separates him from the noise-influenced american school of nmperign's quiet but dark and aggressive hissings.

his cheerful magnification of tiny percussion sounds doesn't really fit among the serious, scalpel-like precision of musicians like christine sehnaoui in europe either. it's no surprise that half-way through side b sven-ake johansson breaks into swing. he can't contain his joy, or maybe more accurately; after more than forty years of releases, johansson can't or simply has no interest in hiding who he is behind the slowly shifting trends of the experimental music world.

there is a reason that drums are typically used in a certain way, in certain settings; been a hundred or so years since edison [or de martinville if yr so inclined] and few solo percussion records worth mentioning. do the math. i’d drive your ass across the world, if i had to is a reboot of a cd-r that dadge himself put out and sent in to brokenresearch and we we’re really taken. it is a totally facile use of rudiments, sound and electronics. it’s clear, articulate and undeniably inventive. when we first cked it it had a stamp of cyrille’s “what about”-which when mentioned to dadge he readily admitted to owning and knowing. over time that stamp has faded and what is left is one of the better improvised percussion records ever released. worlds ahead of most of any “brainy” approach to drums and much more restrained and clear than george stone acolytes and more temporal than the chest-beaters.

there are still so many people steady trippin’ off the futurists and trying to make it faster and louder but it does that on it’s own. when screw decided to upend the idea of time and how one can listen to time, shit slowed everything down and it made sense. houston, the sprawl, the heat, the poverty. detroit, the sprawl, the cold, the poverty. there is a kinship and affection between the 1/4 speed, slo-mo, basement jazz and houston’s favorite codeine addict.

this recording was made with tapes, test presses, outtakes, all played in real time against graveboyz own post-cubist approach to screw mixing us from, where else? the graveyard. chopped up not slopped up. chris riggs adds his destroyed strings to the mix.

olson pulls 2 x duty on this low-level lurk meltdown. the dream time goes 2 vs. 2 for a 1/8 speed that sounds. like contact mic'd drifts of glaciers that make reverb seem like a concept developed by inuits this sound moves slower than slow and spotlight the intricacies of interaction afforded only between people have that particular michigan approach. tovah d-day is in particularly rare form on this one processing everyone in the group and serving as the lee perry on this one.
