brainwashed press release...
kill the pedagogue

october 24, 2006

lee newman
michael wells

released in a limited edition of 500 letterpress sleeves, handmade by michael babcock of interrobang letterpress.

this is one of the earliest archives of greater than one, originally released in 1985 on a limited edition cassette in a red chinese envelope with cut outs of paper, a sticker, image, and poster; wrapped with a red yarn and sealed in a ziplock bag.

the music is aggressive and punchy, with beats and horror sounds, yet the underlying drones are dark and thunderous. it's no surprise the group's first full-length record, 1987's all the masters licked me, was released by lustmord and graeme revell's side effects records.

this is the first time for this recording to appear on cd, and it's enhanced with content of images, text, and bonus audio files (including the entire lay your penis down cassette.

number four in the brainwashed handmade series, this was also letterpressed by mike babcock at interrobang (whose clients have included hydrahead, relapse, kimchee, tumult, and sharkattack).

meat beat manifestoradio free republic b/w lovefingers” seven inch single record

  • radio free republic
  • lovefingers
a side: a nice slab of mid-tempo aleatoric break-based extrapolation; almost like a paleozoic / pre-artificial intelligence autechre coupled with the washy jazz & arcanum samplings of a venetian snares record (without the scatology/guilelessness, plus the beats are nowhere near as intricate), with bits of atomic-age bloopery & very well produced/punishing sub-bass thrown in for floor-play.

b side: a silver apples cover (no less), replete with vocals & found-dialogue, recorded live in concert on september 28th, 1996 at thte filmore, san francisco. starts out like the original, descends quickly into an overloaded organ & theremin/ems synthi freakout (actually; the majority of the track... i’m starting to like this dangers guy...)

super-thick czech republic pressing on grey vinyl with a full-color jacket.

aranosno religion” seven inch single record

  • no religion
  • spitting revivalist dreams of everlasting pain
zonked vibes from this oft-nurse with wound colaborator; the first song has this charlie daniels meets alan vega vibe... repetitve/pounding lo-fi beats with confessional multitracked vocals and the occasional bluegrass violin before crossfading into a bit of electro-acoustic string-scrape droning. the second offers fewer clues to aranos’ sanity via a belched whippoorwill of sustained casio notes and almost z’ev-ish dragged-metal ur-klang that trickles down into a pool of processed/fed-back ring-modulated cymbals and location recordings with a bit more violin-scramble and “col legno” aktion (the united dairies connections now making perfect sense.) peculiar in the best possible way, dripping with zombie-oil(s)...

regular weight 7” pressing on translucent green vinyl inside a full-color flat (cover photo by “antithesis” & “dartmouth street underpass” cover-artist jim siegel!) single is long, around the 12-15 minute mark total...
brainwashed press release...
aranos - all instruments

limited to 500 green vinyl 7" singles.

“for some time i found the hypocrisy of "religions" we generally hear of and which seem to dominate the "western civilisation" rather irritating. christians, followers of islam and those of jewish faith all share the old testament of the bible yet seem to be unable to live together without resorting to pretty much constant warfare. this, of course is not a new phenomenon. crusades, persecution of jews, wars between different factions of christians, or different factions of islam are a constant feature of western history. why? obvious explanation stares one in the face: the bible itself. the old testament - root of all three main western faiths is a seductively beautifully written justification of violence and abhorrent behaviour mainly perpetrated by god and his followers. i could elaborate how this also spills into new testament (killing of the fig tree, many of paul's actions, apocalypse etc), but if you are interested, you can read the crap yourself. "no religion" and "spitting revivalist dreams of everlasting pain" are an expression of my dismay.” - aranos

sybaritedolorous echo” seven inch single record

  • dolorous echo
  • the mast
electronic music from this static caravan artist, in a vague morr-music style (mid-tempo, looping, plenty of notes but no melodies per se.) with a fair bit of richie-devine-lineage automated vst-plugin “pep” peppering the slots between the sounds; quite nicely produced.

a-side track shifts halfway through into a triplet-feel part that’s especially nice. the b-side track is considerably shorter than the first, working some wry electric bass and log-drum sounds.

regular weight 7” pressing on blue vinyl housed inside a full-color flat.

xian hawkins - all instruments

limited to 500 blue vinyl 7" singles.

two instrumental songs from brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist xian hawkins. as sybarite, he's released full-length albums on the temporary residence and 4ad labels and has had a number of singles and compilation tracks on labels all over the world. it's upbeat, amazingly well crafted and never wears out its welcome.

greater than oneairstream b/w bloodstream” seven inch single record

  • airstream
  • bloodstream
1999 single from michael wells (early warp artist, otherwise known as gto, signs ov chaos, tricky disco, etc...) this one predates the rest of the brainwashed singles series (which are all spring/summer 2005.)

interesting single (i’m not wholly familiar w/wells’ work); some near-detroitian strings open the a-side which are then abbuted against some mid-80s period united-dairies lineage “terror noises” which slips into a nice super-sub-bass rumble. no beats, just textures. b-side offers a muted, almost gas-ian sub-kick and emotive string lines, also very nice.

regular weight 7” pressing on red vinyl housed inside a full-color glue-pocket sleeve. doesn’t contain the postcard, the sticker, nor the hand-numbering scheme. just the music, which i’m going to assume is the important part...
