august 2008 release ; first (mass-market, at least) release in a while from the duo of dylan “prick decay” nyoukis and karen constance ...

the field-recording-laced narrow-band droneset herein has more to do with traditional musique concrète (albeit a crispy / lo-fi one) than any of the pits & lans of contemporary underground sound that the pair has documented via their chocolate monk imprint ; i’d go so far as to say that their invitation to & subsqeuent appearance in the bottrop-boy catalogue has them on their toes ... much of this material rivals that of other contemporary-yet-backward-leaning electro-acoustic composers, with more than a touch of dylan’s zonked sound-poetry thrown into the mix ...

easily the best thing i’ve heard from this axis in eons. highly recommended !!!

blood stereo
the magnetic headache
cd / b-boy 035

blood is dripping from my stereo and my ears. blood stereo submerges its listeners in horror vacui. the awfulness of emptiness is made audible in all its horrific detail. this album can be construed either as a radio play for exhausted ears or the ideal soundtrack for waking up from a disturbing nightmare. reality refuses to return this early in the morning and all that remains is a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach. voices wander around in your head, somewhere there is the creaking of a door and in the distance you hear someone softly crying. british noise wizard dylan nyoukis (from, among others, prick decay) and partner in crime karen constance combine to let rip under the name blood stereo. the pair set about their work in subtle way. instead of loud eruptions of noise they set out to create the most quietly disturbing of soundscapes. think an innocent walk in a transylvanian mountain village or a blair witch forest or any other godforsaken place where your only companions are the whispering voices hell-bent on driving you insane and the howling wind. listen to the magnetic headache with your headphones to feel the sounds dripping through your eardrum and crawling up your brainstem. on the last track, honorary guest neil campbell aka astral social club sprinkles a little stardust into your stereo - a much-needed, soul-cleansing coda after such an ominous head trip.

march 2008 release ; a solo joint from no-fun’s carlos giffoni - here entirely ditching his prior fascination with max-msp fueled digital music ; instead focusing on his twin custom-built ray-wilson / music-from-outer-space lineage soundlab suitcase synthesizers ...

the first/titular piece reminds me a little bit of kevin drumm’s “organ” - a “wall” built around a tonal/quavering held-chord, erupting into a over-gained frenzy near its end ... but, rather surprisingly, the three pieces that follow consist of pure analogue psycho-acoustic tone combinations you’d more normally associated with someone like eliane radigue or brendan murray - cleanly rendered & very far removed from the sort of piecemeal jump-cut shards-of-noise-sound you’d have associated carlos with in the past ...

excellent stuff, very glad that carlos is taking his sound into new directions & trying out new realms that fall outside of the harsh noise spectrum... i only wonder what he’ll do next ...

carlos giffoni
eternal noise
cd / b-boy 032

carlos giffoni knows no mercy. of all the noise terrorists on the loose today, giffoni causes the most upheaval. we know he specialises in brutal and invincible noise collages, but there is so much more to it than that. there is always a glimmer of hope that shines through the dense clouds of noise. his noise lives, broods and swings. his latest album for bottrop-boy is a true revelation in this respect, not just for the listener, but also for the artist himself. after all, the venezuelan artist, who is based in new york, has conceded that this is a new style for him. with eternal noise carlos giffoni enters the holiest of holies, his noise nirvana.

even though giffoni’s earlier works already sounded impressively organic, with eternal noise he is heading for new heights. his customary thick layers of noise sound more subtle than ever before. the four-part suite maintains physical impact, but all faces are turned to heaven, towards eternity. rather than a noise exercise that sounds like a wrestling match in the dirt, this recording represents ascension towards the sun and open heavens. at times you will find yourself almost drowning in the feedback splashing against you, at other times you will find yourself breathlessly captivated by the peregrinations, whirls and swells of sinus tones. giffoni is genuinely inspired by the avant-garde music of the 20th century and the results are miraculous.

how giffoni creates his compositions is of no importance. this is all about their effect on your mood, the spectacle of your ravished soul. you find yourself asking how it is possible that such loud and intense music can be so tranquil and meditative at the same time.

eternal noise reconfirms giffoni’s status as the uncrowned king of contemporary noise. bottrop-boy is proud to release this key work in giffoni’s oeuvre.

cd / b-boy 031

phanta rhei’ - everything flows. whatever else might happen, life hurtles on and everything follows its natural course. music is also subject to these ineluctable laws. while often breaking the mould, when everything is in its right place, the music follows its own course. as it does in the little experimental cabins of laboratory field, or labfield for short. this scandinavian monster collective consisting of david stackenäs (guitars, electronics) and ingar zach (percussion) knows exactly how to manipulate sound. at the same time, ingar zach is also creating a big stir with three-piece kindred spirits huntsville.

not fussed about getting their hands dirty, stackenäs and zach dig for sounds of gold with successful results. sound waves emanate from their instruments slowly. this unstoppable flood of sound is not distinguished by brute force but rather by its boundless subtlety and inventiveness. the listener will completely find themselves submerged by an overwhelming stream. bottrop-boy is proud to release labfield’s first sound experiments onto the world.

swedish guitarist stackenäs and norwegian percussionist zach are known names in the european improvisation scene. they previously worked together in three-piece tri dim, together with saxophonist håkon kornstad. two years later, stackenäs and zach decided to work as a duo, deciding on a radically different course. improvisation, sound art, minimal music and drones are fused to form a completely unique style of performing. zach plays, among other instruments, the unique electronic sruti and saranghi boxes. this is music that evolves quietly and often refers to the dronescapes of free improv pioneers such as amm. the sounds which stackenäs manages to conjure up from his guitars are unprecedented: softly humming, viciously rattling and intensely meditative. zach answers these sounds with the hypnotic pulse of his bass drum and electronic sruti box. this is improvisational music replete with sounds branching in unpredictable directions and slowly smouldering drones. an aural rite of passage fit for these modern times.

starving weirdos
summon with electronic sorcery
cd / b-boy 030

this is the soundtrack of your favourite nightmare. the aural cinema delivered by the starving weirdos is best experienced with one’s eyes closed. a dark psychedelic joyride on the inside of one’s eyelids. instead of the obvious, hypnotically safe vision or bouncing orangey sunspots, entire films are projected onto the eyeball. think desolate valleys, sweaty engine rooms and dark alleyways. the four trips committed to record by this californian band taunt every accepted boundary. the black magic summoned by the weirdos’ guitars, saxophones, electronics and smothered voices culminate in a lynchian cinematic exorcism in four parts.

listening to the ominous opening piece summon one finds oneself lost in a sudden sandstorm. enveloped by whirling sand and surrounded by howling coyotes, the only escape is a dilapidated ghost town. with its wailing guitars and scraping percussion this music is best described as desert folk. listen to in transit which sounds like the unnerving siren song of the grimy urban jungle. the listener becomes inescapably entangled in the low mist of ghostly phantom guitars and vocal reverb.

the core of this collective consists of brian pyle and merrick mckinlay from humboldt county, ca. having produced a large number of limited cd-r releases since 1998, summon with electronic sorcery neatly manages to summarise their work to date. this album has grown into a powerful statement. the menacing and angst-ridden industrial undercurrent permeates the weirdos’ hardcore improvisations, while excursions into free folk humanise and cushion their impact. put on your head phones and hold on tight to your chair. this album marks the sonic raid of plunder by this hungry pack of mad wolves.

summon with electronic sorcery is packed in the beautiful 'envelope' packaging, designed and handprinted by jason dodge & christine roland, a one-off pressing of 250 copies.

with the release of a new form of beauty irish band virgin prunes placed themselves firmly on the map of experimental post-punk. this was the unprecedented cathartic musical experience of the early eighties. din glorious was the name of the breathtaking coda of this legendary prunes session. this type of harrowing noise is also evident on mattin & matthew bower’s a new form of beauty (1975). not a follow-up but a magnificent, searing chords of chords.

basque noise expert mattin has undoubtedly found his blood brother in matthew bower, the british godfather of noise-rock. in his theses on noise (2006) mattin wrote: “the old conception of noise was to believe in freedom; the new conception of noise is to achieve freedom”. this is noise with a higher aim, this is noise as utopian ideal.

using guitars and electronics, mattin and bower mould a relentlessly pounding tsunami of sound. no time to catch your breath in this long, thundering tornado of noise, feedback, distortion and screaming strings. a screeching guitar occasionally lifts its head above the whirling maelstrom. ghostlike sounds rise towards the surface of this sonic mass; is that a wailing, desolate violin or a radio i hear in the distance? am i hallucinating or is this indeed that new beauty?

mattin & bower far exceed the pain threshold. no need to prick up your ears; expect your eardrums to be pierced. just when you think calm has returned, the duo decides to increase the dose. at the end of their piece mattin & bower reveal an unparalleled vertiginous abyss of noise. the listener is transported from high to higher plateaus of sound. cries for help are suppressed as salvation comes nigh. this is white noise from the dark side. this is indeed a new form of beauty.

'a new form of beauty (1975)' is packed in beautiful new 'envelope' packaging designed and handprinted by jason dodge & christine roland.

no canal
cd / b-boy 028

guitar, drums and electronics. there are no further requirements for turning the world on its head. since their inception in 2002, mouthus from brooklyn have delighted and enraptured their audience. thundering noise eruptions, mail-fisted guitar drones, infernal drumbeats and an indomitable drive are these devilish duos hallmarks. this is undiluted rock ‘n’ rock for noise junkies. when it comes to live performances, mouthus are unbeatable. nevertheless, in order to nourish the other parts of the soul, mouthus alternate their teeth-grindingly loud shows with recordings into which rage and energy are consummately channelled. no canal follows a different path altogether. guitarist brian sullivan and drummer nate nelson lead the listener on a journey of exploration. past bricked-up walls of sound and through a swamp of drones the duo descries a terra incognita, a dark world of sound in which innocent idylls of nature are soon subjected to the destructive forces of industrialisation.

initially, pastoral guitar parts are heard, pursued by drums in the distance. this is ethereal music in the tradition of bands like popol vuh. the promised land is hidden behind low mist and impenetrable green. but all hope proves idle: torturing guitar feedback and tribal drums soon tear the dream apart. the industrial torrent of sound seems unstoppable. this is music that reveals itself as a tired, technological beast with a slow heartbeat and creaking limbs. the subliminal menace and naked demise remain audible and tangible. this is a story that has to be told. mouthus cannot be silenced.

no canal is packed in the beautiful 'envelope' packaging, designed and hand printed by jason dodge & christine roland, a one-off pressing of 250 copies.

jazzkammerpanic” compact disc

jazzkammer
panic
cd / b-boy 026

the modern city only reveals its secrets in dribs and drabs. a worn-out world in decline or a place where strugglers could realise their dreams at any moment? surely, the signs are there? abandoned factory buildings, bleak streets, neglected houses lonely people on the underground. the modern city surely holds nothing for any normal person. an extinguished city which has lost touch with its natural resources. the real panic hasn’t started yet, but is tangible for all under the surface of day-to-day life.

norwegian duo jazzkammer reproduces this urban madness in its 35-minute long panic. on this epic album john hegre and lasse marhaug pay homage to their great love of the electric guitar. jazzkammer has greatly enriched its electronic pallet, witness the renewed passion for instrumental music expressed on its metal-inspired album metal music machine, which appeared on smalltown supernoise this year.

jazzkammer covers the full spectrum of the guitar on panic: from screaming black metal eruptions to ominously dark ambient. and all is imbued with a deep blue, deeply disconsolate city blues.

jazzkammer drags the listener to the underground vaults of the city. drifting around in the gritty guitar reverb there is a sudden outburst of the submerged screeching of children, only to give way to earth shattering metal solos. only at the end does some form of acceptance appear; a softly murmuring guitar riff lulls the city dwellers softly to sleep. but the menace remains.

panic can be seen as the disquieting follow-up to pulse (b-boy 017), jazzkammer’s preceding release on bottrop-boy. while one could still hold on tight to the electrifying rhythm of the modern city on pulse, there is no way back on panic. as he did for pulse, yuen chee wai provides compelling artwork and photography for this dark city portrait.

dance music
cd / b-boy 025

don’t be fooled by the casual title of this release; you will hear a veritable ghost in the machine cloaked in pure electronic sounds. japanese composer toshimaru nakamura goes beyond the furthest reaches of sound in his mission to cross the border to the other side. this time it falls to dancing poltergeists and hellish, rattling machines to scourge nakamura’s soundscapes.

toshimaru nakamura is known worldwide as the master of the no-input mixing board. from out of nowhere he manages to conjure up the most insane of sounds. nakamura is on a quest to find the unheard and is latest creations on ‘dance music’ bear witness to the fact that he is willing to pursue that quest to the furthest extremes.

this release contains two large pieces of more than twenty minutes and just under fifty minutes in length. this music will literally throw you off balance. the widest of frequencies will softly caress the inside of your skull, cause your eardrums and sing in unison with your feverishly screeching nervous system. the music takes its time and alternates between ominous silences, deeply resonant drones and alienated, crackling pulses to create a restless yet inherently contemplative soundscape. softly, your head will rock to and fro to try and find its optimal listening position. you will not find it easy to shake these sounds off. these compositions emanate a ghostly aura, an eerie feel that remains in the air after the pieces have come to an end. nakamura is on to something here and those willing to take the risks are invited to follow wherever he may take them.

the artwork of nakamura's dance music is designed by acclaimed dutch graphic designer karel martens.

plays brötzmann
cd / b-boy 024

how to improvise on an existing work of improvisation? american outfit pillow took the plunge by carefully placing european free jazz legend peter brötzmann’s group improvisation piece images on the rack. don’t expect any tortured notes or twisted chords, though, as pillow respectfully and patiently square up to brötzmann’s music. written especially for his tentet and released on okkadisk, images is one of brötzmann’s most meditative collective works of improvisation. tentet member and cellist fred lonberg holm took up the challenge and together with his pillow quartet breathed new live into the composition, and a completely new piece of music is born.

the reflective mood of brötzmann’s original is admiringly kept intact in pillow’s interpretation, considering that it’s constructed in eleven parts. apart from lonberg holm, pillow is: liz payne (bass, viola and percussion), michael colligan (tubes and dry ice) and ben vida (trumpet and guitar) from minimalist post-rock band town and country. the quartet strives for tight harmony in the tradition of classic sixties improv groups like amm and mev. the totality of sound is paramount and individual proclivities and the virtuoso solo performances are wisely avoided.

plays brötzmann reveals a quartet in full flow; predominantly calm, trance-inducing improvisations will occasionally veer off at unexpected angles, but they rarely loosen their grip on the listener. in this twilight world, the music levitates between modern classical, free improv and melancholic post-rock. impressively, these musicians have managed to dose the ingredients taken from the storerooms of their respective musical backgrounds for the preparation of images to perfection. among such ingredients are ominous strings, wistful guitar riffs, gamelan-like sequences and crashing cymbals. the listener is a traveller in a fascinating soundscape where unexpected musical horizons suddenly appear within reach.

burned bridges and lost loves
2cd / b-boy 023

burned bridges and lost loves is the second part of a project in which friends, colleagues and lovers were asked to remix the works of chicago improvisation-trio tv pow. like its predecessor powerful friends and devoted lovers, a double-album that contains 29 remixes, the second and final installment also offers remixes of tracks that are mostly taken from tv pow’s album friendship patrol. adding another 31 remixes, the total amount of remixes is now equal to the amount of tracks that feature on friendship patrol. on the original score tv pow managed to create a evolving soundscape of unidentifiable field recordings, minimal electronics and serene ambient drones. it’s no surprise that friendship patrol happened to be a grateful source for further exploration.

burned bridges and lost loves includes contributions from tarentel, tim hecker, sachiko m, illusion of safety, wolf eyes, alva noto, stephan mathieu, david grubbs and francisco lopez, amongst many others. these contributors could be classified as a representative sample of currently influential artists in experimental and electronic music.

burned bridges and lost loves comes with artwork by meeuw, yet another remix of the original artwork of friendship patrol.

rob mazurek
music for shattered light box and 7 posters
cd / b-boy 022

getting a grip on the chaos that surrounds us: for american artist and trumpet/cornet player rob mazurek the time has come to make a statement. every right-minded lover of modern music knows his jazz and post-rock explorations with bands such as chicago underground duo, isotope 217, and tortoise. nevertheless, inside this vintage improviser there also lurks a passionate multimedia artist who likes to speak his mind, especially in a time when his home country is starting to reveal the darkest and most vulnerable corners of its soul. the fact that mazurek has recently moved to brazil has not clouded his crystal clear vision of a derailed western civilisation.

mazurek’s installation-cum-composition music for shattered light box and 7 posters expresses his personal vision of the world through sight and sound. this frequently exhibited installation revealing in its simplicity. a flickering light box, smashed in with a brick, along with several apocalyptic canvases tell the story of a grimy and chilly underworld. this installation is inextricably linked to the composition which shares its name, which is now available on bottrop-boy.

hold on tight during this forty-minute cascade of sounds in which mazurek has managed to establish a link between his darkest musical nightmares and the listener who is fed them bit by bit. this loud electronic trip will rarely allow you to come up for air. the source of these electronically excavated and resurrected sounds remains a mystery, but who cares? uncontrollably splitting noise eruptions, unhinged beats, aching alarms and ominous hisses stutter and splutter past, all but refusing to leave the listener alone.  situated somewhere in the middle between the anarchic beauty of early musique concrète, old industrial nurse with wound releases and the rages of merzbow and venetian snares: this is a rob mazurek whom few will have ever heard before.

taku sugimoto
chamber music
cd / b-boy 019

taku sugimoto has been one of the most important musicians on the improv-front for some years now with releases on erstwhile, grob, a bruit secret, improvised music from japan and many other labels. redefining guitar music with his ultra minimal way of playing, the most extreme endpoint for this was the taku sugimoto guitar quartet album released earlier on bottrop-boy. on chamber music he puts the guitar aside and composes 3 pieces for violin, cello and piano. he recreates the same sustained sound as his guitar pieces, although these new works sound more composed and could be compared to modern classical composers such as feldman. only after an hour sugimoto's guitar enters the frame together with a banjo for the short closing track.

reproduction
cd / b-boy 018

secular musics of south yorkshire is the new project name for mark fell, who is half of snd and shirt trax. reproduction is his first solo album after having only released a solo 12" as .h on hobby industries in 2000. the album is a reworking of sorts of the same-titled album from the human league from the 80s, using it as source material for not only the music but also for the complete album concept. although close in sound to the snd aesthetic secular musics of south yorkshire sounds more angular and erratic. tracks skip and jump all over the place, working themselves into an asymmetrical beat.

pulse
cd / b-boy 017

jazzkammer are lasse marhaug and john hegre from norway. together they have been making music as jazzkammer since 1998. past releases include timex, rolex (a remix album), pancakes and a live album with merzbow. jazzkammer are relentless sound explorers with no set style or specific 'sound' - they move swiftly from hardcore overload electronics and sonic freakouts to lowercase soundscapes and location recordings. once described as 'sonic architects', marhaug and hegre insist they are merely trying to make 'good music'.

pulse was recorded in singapore during the sars-crisis in april of 2003. it was inspired by a theatre piece of the same title that they were working on at the same time, though the music on the cd does not resemble that of the play. the album pulse is a single beautiful 32-minute piece; its basic structure is a drifting electronic drone that slowly unfolds and mutates, with subtle layers of location recordings and vinyl-static adding color and depth. like pancakes, pulse has a cinematic feel to it, a feeling that is further enhanced by the photos of acclaimed photographer yuen chee wai that grace the cover and 12-page booklet.

fur your bears only
cd / b-boy 016

heimir björgúlfsson is an ex-member of the longstanding icelandic group stilluppsteypa and jonas ohlsson is a reknown visual artist, at the time of the collaboration both based in amsterdam, the netherlands. fur your bears only is their second collaboration after the unspoken word tour album in the brombron series released by staalplaat and extrapool.

fur your bears only is the most melodic and poppy music ever to have come out of björgúlfsson & ohlsson, providing 8 tracks that show how disco & house can get distorted once in the hands of these two gentlemen. from the epic opening 10-minute title track onwards this work is full of abstract dancefloor sympathies. recorded in amsterdam, xiamen, los angeles and reykjavik, fur your bears only is the best example of how good a hybrid between classic dance music and abstract experimentalism can be. with beautiful collage artwork made by the two musicians themselves.

a little lost
cd / b-boy 013

icelandic musician (now based in hannover, germany) sigtryggur berg sigmarsson has been a longtime member of the band stilluppsteypa. since some time he has been releasing solo works as well, with albums on trente oiseaux, ers and fire inc. this is his new solo album, and the best example of the variety of his musical talent. a little lost contains three lengthy tracks, one beautiful piece that gets close in spirit to ambient, one collage piece using amongst else spoken word and a third track which is maybe closest to the familiar sound of stilluppsteypa, on which he got help from irr.app.(ext.).

live in 's-hertogenbosch
cd / b-boy 012

world renowned composer francisco lópez has by now an extensive discography and is seen regularly performing his music live around the globe. yet only a very small portion of his extensive discography reflects his activities on stage. therefore we are proud to release this excellent recording of a francisco lópez concert from 1999, taped in 's-hertogenbosch, the netherlands. in a dark room, lópez sat behind the mixing board and mixed his various sound sources blindfolded, whilst his audience was also blindfolded. unlike his many 'silent' (or more accurately) studio cd's, lópez here builds the sound from extreme silence to extreme loudness. the cd comes with a black blindfold which is recommended for use during playback of the cd at home.
