this album is the second in yorkshire-born composer, singer, guitarist and maverick troubadour michael chapman's series of his more improvised musical releases. the first, 2011's the resurrection and revenge of the clayton peacock (ptyt 068cd), was wire magazine's #5 album of the year, and was widely and favorably received by press and fans alike as another highpoint in chapman's late-blooming career, which has been boosted by the public recognition of his talents by the likes of thurston moore, jack rose, and will oldham.

pachyderm is an lp-length minimalist masterpiece, a single chord ambient work quite unlike anything chapman has done before and equally as surprising and different as peacock managed to be. the second track is a remix of the first side by one rob antony, a young cumbrian neighbor of michael's. together they form a mellow and gently-shifting work that easily beckons auto-repeated plays.

chapman is now 71 years-old and playing better than ever. he started out on emi's legendary '60s harvest record label and turned down playing with both elton john and david bowie's spiders band. it only goes to show, as per the recent rediscovery of the talents of his other contemporaries roy harper or john martyn, eventually, your time will come.

michael chapman, one of the finest acoustic guitar innovators borne of the late '70s uk folk scene, was in philadelphia early 2010, paying tribute to his good friend, the late jack rose, a mighty six-string alchemist in his own right, and a youngster wholly inspired by chapman's critical recordings.

while sharing in the good light of friendship backstage, we asked michael if he'd ever recorded an lp of purely improvised guitar music. it seemed feasible, as the current state of acoustic guitar exploration was in equal measures inspired by both composition and improvisation.

chapman, along with bert jansch, john renbourn, john fahey et al, was a significant and historical informant for this young set. but he claimed to have never even entertained the notion of an lp of exclusively improvised playing.

anyone who has had the good fortune to hear michael just take off in the middle of his songs and simply shred into zones of in-and-out-of-the-chakras stratosphere knows that such an idea could only be wildly welcomed.

as it were, michael got in touch within a week or so and said he was game, and here it is, the resurrection and revenge of the clayton peacock, two sides of unbroken, idiosyncratic guitar improvisation that moves from neck-tapping harmonics into effects pedal kosmische into distinctly strange tone huzz. an odd and lovely, momentous session.

july 2012 release ; ... kind bowled over by this “ensemble” variant of john elliott’s outer space project, heard here (on the a-side) working an almost aphex twin -style “hard” electronic banger amidst three of his finer sequencer-driven numbers ... but then (on the b-side) there’s a side-length suite of “free electronics” that admirably pays homage to the included reference-point composers :: ilhan mimaroglu and tod dockstader ...

... glad john is embracing this new influence-set (clearly he’s a fan of the more outlier-orientted stuff ; his quiet light water gap & lilypad sides have long belied this) ; arguably my favorite single record of his thusfar ... highly recommended !!!

"ii” is the logical progression. it is an effort based on group format, and is an evolution from the debut outer space album. the central core of elliott and veres worked to arrange, record, and mix for a new direction and a new sound; headed down a path of cracked concrete and dissolving memory from the aether. many different textures and composing methods are applied here to make a more varied and spontaneous array of songs. experiments ranging from looped, broken m-400, jagged rhythm beds, and modular synthesis. severing the obsessions of death and anxiety, and creating a work based on "the current" and those involved in the process, "ii" has a different feel with less claustrophobia and more breathable air. imagine the sounds are a liquid, with different masses and changing color.

"ii" is first in a 12" trilogy of sounds to be released in 2012. it's considered to be the second full-length effort by the project. reality comes first here with a narrative of events that are real and happening right now. close attention to detail reveals more than what is seen at the surface. the information is presented clearly; it's up to the listener to use the intelligence provided for full comprehensive understanding.

october 2011 release ; ... major late pass needed on this one, a truly sublime set of solo electric guitar pieces by uk guitarist dean mcphee, limiting his palette to pure guitar / amplifier interactions (as opposed to a double-digit pedal-chain) with absolutely gorgeous results ...

... this is easily some of the best “private”, “bedroom guitar” music i’ve heard in ages, harkening back to the rainy-day vibe of loren connors’ “live in pittsburgh” without actually dipping directly into his (or, anyone’s for that matter) playbook ... highly recommended !!!

june 2008 release ; truly astounding 6-disc collection of live material from nyc art/synth-punks suicide, all recorded on a dictaphone during the band’s first few new york dates & euro/uk jaunts by howard thompson ...

super minimal / stripped down, with just marty’s lone drum machine / synth (maybe even still farfisa @ this stage?) / fx setup backing alan’s primal vox-yalp ... you simply can’t ignore the similarity between the primal, deer-in-headlights vibe of this stuff and contemporary synth-noise / power-electronics (esp. given the fidelity throughout) ...

any fan of the band will need to hear this ; despite the cover-sticker warning that this material is “not for the faint of heart or casual fan” i’d wager this is as good a place as any to get your toes wet (albeit in stunning redundancy ; the band’s 5/6 song ‘77 / ‘78 repertoire will be burnt into your cortex by the end of a complete cycle through this set) ... simply amazing.
