january 2010 release ; heated duo exchange between percussionist tatsuya nakatani & trumpeter forbes graham ... tons of “sculptural” playing (tatsuya’s prepared percussion is always a treat, forbes regularly playing his instrument sans-mouthpiece, yielding some fine tube-resonance overtones - listen to the sound-sample) ...

the seven immaculately recorded, real-time interchanges here range from amm-esque extended-technique meltdowns to some straight, rhythmically propulsive “fire music” ... recording quality is crystal clear (a studio date such as this is especially notable in this day of minidisc room-recordings of sparsely-attended gigs as albums ; they tend to leap right out of the speakers) ...

blaq002 - tatsuya nakatani/forbes graham “essences” cd

a recording of a meeting between trumpet player forbes graham and percussionist tatsuya nakatani, essences is shamanic, ceremonial, and yet urgent. nakatani is practically orchestral on this disc, wielding an arsenal of bells, bowls, and gongs. graham switches between trumpet and piccolo trumpet, although most would be hard pressed to tell which he is playing. starting off in a meditative, sonorous state and building to a pattering panoply of rhythms, essences is an exploration of the folding and unfolding of mysteries and secrets.

may 2008 release ; first proper disc from boston-area trumpeter / computer-musician forbes graham, recently seen in improvised-music group(ing)s with weasel walter, tatsuya nakatani, etc ... as well as playing on records by metal/indie/core bands like kayo dot, ehnahre, irepress, the red chord, infidel?/castro!, love life, & the one am radio ...

nestled somewhere between a trumpet recital and a mego-lineage harsh computer-music set, this music covers a lot of ground, starting with the sequenced rhythms & overloaded blare of “drowned” & continuing in wildly erratic form through the albums almost maryanne amacher-esque “for you, lily” (listen to the sound-sample) ...

along with greg kelley, forbes is doing great work in liberating the trumpet from its “fanfare” origins ... a great disc for the short-attention-span set, housed in a clear amaray with an insert (detailed below) ...
