gurdjieff
oriental suite

between 13 and 25 december 1923 the gurdjieff institute gave a series of eight public demonstrations of the sacred gymnastics and movements at the théâtre des champs-elysées in paris. the music, composed by gurdjieff to accompany these dances, was orchestrated by thomas de hartmann and performed by an orchestra of thirty-five musicians.

in january 1924, gurdjieff and his pupils sailed to america for a series of public demonstrations in new york, boston, and chicago.

at gurdjieff’s request, de hartmann adapted the full orchestral scores for a smaller ensemble that would accompany the demonstrations there.

the four cds enclosed with this book contain both the paris orchestrations and the american versions, all recorded for the first time by the metropole orchestra and the little orchestra. an addenda section features music intended for gurdjieff ’s unfinished ballet the struggle of the magicians.

in order to complete the reconstruction of the orchestral gurdjieff / de hartmann music, the oriental suite, compiled by de hartmann in 1956, is included as well.

the 256-page book is profusely illustrated with many new photos and unique historical documents. it further contains recollections of people who were present when these demonstrations were given, as well as a sampling of the extensive press coverage generated by the gurdjieff institute during its first—and final—public appearance.

kodachrome

the beau hunks present kodachrome: compositions for orchestra by raymond scott

performed by the metropole orchestra

kodachrome is a collection of raymond scott's idiosyncratic (and in several cases "serious") orchestral music, performed by holland's 60-piece metropole orchestra.

kodachrome presents yet another overlooked side of scott's legacy. commonly known as the leader of a late 1930s jazz-novelty sextet (which he called a "quintette") whose music was adapted in hundreds of bugs bunny and daffy duck cartoons, scott has also been hailed as a pioneer of electronica. such basta cds as soothing sounds for baby and manhattan research inc. showcased scott's little-known 1950s-1960s work in electronic music.

with kodachrome, the scott legacy grows yet again. after scott disbanded his legendary quintette in 1939, he formed the first of his many orchestras. these bands were arguably more popular at the time than his quintette. however, his orchestra's recordings which got the most attention were often cover versions of popular hits of the day. but scott continued to compose, this time for a larger canvas, and some of his more historically fascinating work often went commercially unrecorded, performed only on radio (and preserved on transcription discs made by scott, who was also a sound engineer).

in 1999, the metropole orchestra recorded the chesterfield arrangements (also released on basta), which consisted of large-scale arrangements of scott's quintette compositions, including such favorites as "powerhouse" and "the toy trumpet." that album was produced by beau hunks orchestra leader gert-jan blom, who also produced kodachrome.

the earliest composition on kodachrome, "confusion among a fleet of taxicabs upon meeting with a fare," was composed in 1935; the latest, "city of new york" and "naked city," date from 1953. all of these compositions (except "taxicabs") are given their cd debut on this release.

kodachrome features original cover artwork by kellie strøm, and liner notes by noted author and jazz historian will friedwald, and a special introduction by elvis costello.

eclektronics
jean jacques perrey & david chazam

the name jean-jacques perrey should be immediately familiar to electronic music fans, particularly those who are aware of the moog synthesizer's golden age of the '60s and '70s, when moog records were plentiful in music shops. but unlike most of those lps -- which usually covered other artists' tunes from the beatles to bacharach to bach and beyond -- perrey's albums were mostly filled with catchy, incredibly happy original tunes showcasing the man's wacky musical sense of humor.

from 1966 to 1970, perrey released four lps for vanguard -- two with arranger gershon kingsley, and two by himself as a solo artist. in addition to their records for vanguard, during the early 60s perrey and kingsley created commercials for radio and television. around 1970, perrey's contract with vanguard ended, and he returned to his native france.

he recorded six lps of electronic background music for the french montparnasse 2000 label; these discs are now very rare and immensely collectible. for the next 23 years, perrey lived in virtual obscurity in france. it seemed that the musical world had forgotten the inventive frenchman.

but perrey's life out of the public eye changed in 1993 when re/search publications produced its first incredibly strange music book. a new generation of young musicians and modern music lovers were discovering perrey's amazing musical legacy. many artists began sampling his records, and dance remix whiz fatboy slim even had an international hit with his souped-up dance remix of perrey's tune "e.v.a.". it was through the re/search book that a young french musician named david chazam became fascinated with perrey's music.

chazam sent a cassette of his own electronic music to perrey, and proposed that they collaborate on an album. perrey replied simply: "when, where and how?" perrey and chazam teamed up in the studio. j-j brought prepared tape loops (digitally loaded into his kurzweil synthesizer/sampler), but no actual tunes. instead, he had what he called "several cine-reels in my head" -- little movies, imaginary pictures and conceptual ideas that perrey wanted to orchestrate. he described the feel of the music needed, and chazam came up with appropriate rhythm tracks.

david chazam explained, "this album was produced by a person who loves jean jacques' music -- me! i wanted to present his music with some modern technical tricks, but i also tried to recreate the classic analog sound of his vanguard recordings. i wanted to help him create an album that i hoped would be timeless, and wouldn't sound dated many years from now."

jean jacques perrey's music for eclektronics is a perfect blend of the style of his classic '60s recordings blended with more modern, groove-oriented samples and production techniques.

the secret 7
the unexpected

this is the same raymond scott who gave the world "powerhouse," "the toy trumpet," and dozens of jazz novelties of the 1930s long associated with bugs bunny and daffy duck cartoons. he was later an inventor of electronic instruments. during the period he recorded this album, he was deep into modern jazz and working more with small ensembles (the way he began in the 1930s) instead of orchestras (which he had conducted and recorded with since 1940).

scott's 1960 album the secret 7: the unexpected featured an all-star line-up, the cream of new york's jazz cats. however, the names of the musicians were not officially revealed. but as jazz historian nat hentoff stated in the liner notes: "jazz aficionados will instantly recognize the players." this album was originally released on vinyl by top rank in 1960, in a limited pressing. it features a number of quirky scott originals, along with imaginative arrangements of pop standards. there are three bizarre novelty numbers: "and the cow jumped over the moon" and "and the dish ran away with the spoon," which feature scott's then-wife singer dorothy collins on chipmunk-like sped-up vocals; and "quiet entrance," a jazz-noir piece that includes a murder with sound effects.

this is the album's first cd release. it is part of basta's essential reissues series. the album features the original liner notes, the original cover, and a secret url to learn the names of the legendary musicians who played on the sessions.

the metropole orchestra feat. the beau hunks sextette
the chesterfield arrangements

‘arrangements of raymond scott`s compositions, originally arranged for and performed by the paul whiteman orchestra. arrangers include fred van eps, irving szathmary, joe glover, roy bargy, russ case and nathan van cleave. these charts were performed on the chesterfield series between december 1937 and december 1938, but whiteman recorded almost none of them.

gert jan blom, beau hunks orchestra leader, set out to record these arrangements. he chose to work with the metropole orchestra, one of the nest large jazz ensembles in europe, with whom he had previously recorded albums of music by roger roger and andre popp, and dennis farnon's mother magoo suite. the chesterfield arrangements called for a virtuoso saxophone sextet, so blom added the sax players from the beau hunks orchestra. the music of raymond scott has always been difficult to categorize. because he does not fit any of the neat marketing categories, this has helped give his music a particular appeal to modern audiences. in the liner notes for the chesterfield arrangements jazz scholar will friedwald observes, "what makes scott so relevant to our times is the rhythmic accessibility of his work. scott supporters lament that the composer is invariably given scant notice in histories of jazz, but it's difficult to consider the '30s quintette music jazz in any except the broadest definition of the term. the fashion in which scott used rhythm and avoided a jazz conception of time ultimately works in his favor. those wonderfully tricky, rinky-dinky, mechanical sounding pieces fall easy on the ears of contemporary listeners who've grown up with a rock and roll sense of time."

the metropole orchestra
la musique qui fait popp!

highlights from the works of andré popp 1952-62

the eccentric french composer and orchestra leader andré popp (b. 1924) is best known for writing the worldwide hit "love is blue" (us #1 for paul mauriat in 1968).

but there's lots more. over a long and colorful career, popp's own richly layered recordings, full of unexpected twists and turns, were spiked with mischievous experiments in tape manipulation and featured exotic instruments like the ondes martenot and musical saw. popp considers himself self-taught, though confesses he learned many tricks from musical legends jean wiener and roger roger. popp's evocative soundscapes echo one of his contemporaries, nino rota.

la musique qui fait popp features 21 elegant vignettes composed by popp for french radio in the 1950s and 60s. such titles as "bop polka," "ciné surprise," and "skating mouse" reflect the playfulness of this music. all tunes were faithfully recreated by the dutch metropole orchestra playing from the original scores, provided by mr. popp. album produced by gert-jan blom of the beau hunks, with cover art by noted dutch illustrator ever meulen.
