1995 release ; second disc of the massive “eres” trilogy ...

one of the many, many projects that’s been on the back-burner since the inception of mms back in 2001 was to acquire copies of, then expose you all to the recorded work of canadian sound-poet/artist pierre-andrè arcand, who, with little fanfare, released these life-changing discs back in the mid-late 90s ...

you often hear (and i often read, via various press releases describing various bands, mainly from brooklyn, mainly influenced by a combination of “gang of four” and “animal collective,” but i digress) the phrase “X was ahead of its / their time” ... arcand is a prime example of someone who was about a decade ahead of their time, or at least the time in which their work could be understood in the greater context of artists working on the fringes of sound-poetry, real-time tape-loop / minimalism, and home-built electronic sound-capturing / modification devices towards a common goal of ultra-personalized long-form music ...

this material, largely composed & performed in real time using rube goldeberg-esque array of cassette and tape loop apparatus & his own voice, framed by folks such as spencer yeh or jason lescalleet’s contemporary work, suddenly makes a hell of a lot of sense to me and, hopefully (by proxy at least) many of mms’ customer-base ... the impact these discs had on me upon first discovering them back in the late 90s is palpable ; but right now they sound like the perfect combination of jerry-rigged live-electronics, the most wasted / transgressive sound-poetry tactics, and a kind of anti-music sentiment that should appeal to just about anyone that’s ever dragged a microphone across the floor & fed it through a delay pedal (a good percentage of you i’d imagine) ... in many ways they’re the missing link between henri chopin, bernard heidsieck, and françois dufrêne’s 60s voice/electronic experiments and the contemporary wave of throat-mangle antics (see: dylan nyoukis, any number of harsh noise / power electronics acts) ...

highly recommended, but please please go for all three discs in the series ; they’re set up to run continually as a single piece work (despite only being available as individual discs) ... the track numbers even continue on from the previous volume(s) !!!

extremely hard to describe in technical terms (or even why this is so appealing) but ultimately one of the most impressive sounding thing i’ve ever heard ... highly recommended ; but as i’ve mentioned above / below, you really need to latch on to all three discs of the series to understand the sheer scope of it all ...

1976. un été très sec. luc ferrari et brunhild meyer chez des amis, près de paris, sont couchés dans l’herbe. ils étudient la carte de la france et font des projets de vacances. luc demande à son amie qui est en train d’arroser son jardin, de lui envoyer une goutte d’eau. elle tombe sur un petit village dans les corbière, une région viticole dans le sud de la france. c’est là où ils décident d’aller en vacances. il parlent avec les gens, avec le facteur, les jeunes, avec le curé et l’anarchiste. comment vit une jeune femme née dans le village, 22 ans, un enfant, mariée à un artisan maçon, le smig pour le ménage? elle dit ses occupations, ses désirs, ses troubles, ses problèmes de femme, la recherche de son émancipation.

1976. a very dry summer. luc ferrari and brunhild meyer with friends, close to paris, are lying in grass. they study the chart of france and make projects of holidays. luc asks his friend who is sprinkling her garden, to send a water drop to him. it falls on a small village in corbière, a wine-producing area in the south of france. it is where they decide to go on holiday. he speaks with people, with the factory, the young people, with the priest and the anarchists. how did an young woman see born in the village, 22 years, a child, married to a craftsman mason, the smug for the household? she says her occupations, her desires, her disorders, her problems of woman, the search for her emancipation.

transfuge / transfuge a/v

this double by pierre-andré arcand integrates various practices: audio poetry, visual poetry, audio and performance art. transfuge is an incursion in electronic music and video art.

the audio cd has three distinct sections: “dj_pa” is a multitrack editing produced in studio and remixed during a performance; “m2” is a section generated by a chain of electronic elements such as a mixing console, a digital recorder and a multi-effect processor, all in closed circuit. feedback without a microphone nor any external source, cracking, disruptive frequencies, rough patches: this is another type of exploration of the loop phenomenon, which is characteristic in pierre-andré arcand’s work. the last section, “eres+22-23”, is a look back at the artist’s past production, with the only difference being that the entire process is carried out in digital mode.

the transfuge a/v video cd includes dj_pa, vidéovox and eclectü. these last two propositions were produced using the macchina ricordi numérique (mrn), a software that develops audio compositions in real time by the accumulation of sounds on evolutive loops. a related video process has allowed for visual and simultaneous construction designed using image samples, repetitions and superpositioning in a progressive continuum.

to publicize the audio collection accumulated by ohm editions between 1993 and 1998, avatar asked eight composers to extract, transform and remix bits and entire pieces whatever way they wanted.

the result is obviously one of very different approaches and varied listening experiences. through ohmix, avatar, as the name of the centre indicates, metamorphoses, changes itself and rematerializes with new pieces. from ralf wehowsky to alexandre st-onge, each reading is a taking-aim, an angle of attack, a posture that comes across like a meeting, a rendezvous of sound. the interweavings are amplified sharings, interpretations enriched by the fine-tuning of each sound sensibility.

ohmix is a weaving of related but dispersed trends. for several years, a number of artists have been creating a new genre by using the sounds of other artists for their own creations and fishing from assorted discs to reconstruct them into a music that is unprecedented. ohmix sees itself as contributing to the history of avatar and of ohm editions.

ohmix was broadcast in november 2001 on the french-language radio service of the cbc, la chaîne culturelle, on le navire night, a program produced by hélène prévost.

[3 phases] gathers together various facets of michael snow’s work. three aspects rarely seen: snow the improviser at the piano, snow the conceptual artist and, finally, snow the blues and jazz pianist, which precedes the other two and without which the image would be incomplete.

les machines animales includes improvised works designed during a residence at avatar. integrating a wide range of microphones and their friction, the creative process has led to sounds evoking machines as well as the animal aspect. the work is structured like a story, the titles well indicate the archetypal form proposing a world of fiction, fairy tales or animation.
