sheddinghello st. louis!!! - may 28th, 2004” compact disc recordable

  • lapping stairs (11:44)
  • cobblestone wash (8:17)
  • concrete wash (16:43)
autumn press release...
played in st. louis while on tour recently. the night of the show had intense storms, and flooding ensued as we headed from the radio station to the club. the next morning, after a breakfast fruit cup, we headed to the mighty st. louis arch, as sara p. had never been. instead of ascending the manmade wonder that i had visited so recently, i decided to enjoy the beautiful weather in the park, by the mississippi river, with bobby m. and joe s.; paul d. was napping in the van. i had my minidisc and mic with the intent to capture some sounds, but i was largely aimless, which often leads to the most fun times capturing moments. bobby m. suggested i record the river. how obvious and cliche i thought. as they headed back for the van, i walked down to the flooded waterway. soon, as a young boy and his grandmother departed nearby, i was lost in the hypnotic sounds of the river. i quickly realized i should record these moments of relaxation and quiet on an otherwise chaotic tour. if nothing more than as an audio memory of the refreshing morning of solitude and meditation. there are three separate tracks. first, the water lapping against a flooded stairwell, the slapping sound seeming so alien to my ears. the second track, the water washing over a flooded bank of cobblestones, the sounds falling somewhere in between the lapping stairs and the final track: the wash of water over a flooded slope of smooth concrete. ben owenflorida everglades - february 2004” compact disc recordable

  • (1:00)
  • (8:44)
  • (26:08)
  • (1:51)
autumn press release...
these recordings were made in february 2004 on an overnight canoe trip into the back-country of the florida everglades. in 30+ knot winds my partner summer and i entered west lake in the north-western part of everglades national park which connects to several lakes, groves, and creeks, before reaching the 7.7 mile destination at garfield bight on the gulf coast. the first two recordings are from a contact mic submerged in water from the moving canoe. soundings happen as the contact mic brushes through sea vegetation and the changing water depth. the second two recordings were edited from a longer recording entering and exiting the grove between the lungs and alligator creek. the low quality radio shak binaural microphones were placed inside the canoe. the vast expanse of groves that grow in the everglades are an amazing organic structure. the overhanging groves connect two land-masses stretching over to create a tunnelesque passageway that one would have to duck from low passing limbs, branches, vines, and spider-webs. the grove paths are kept just wide enough for one canoe to pass through. along the banks alligators rested in the sun, some in small groups, some with mouths propped open on a fallen tree, or with eyes gently floating above water watching us pass. the sound reflected here within the groves is the reflection from the hull of the canoe and the overhanging grove. autumn press release...
in 2002, i moved with my family for half a year to italy, close to the sea to a place in the countryside near genoa. we tried to form a community together with a bunch of italians. we were living in tents and some ancient ruins (there even was a little church on the area, actually the most proper building, which we mainly used for storing wood) we tried to build a strawbale house but it was raining so much in this year that we really almost swam away. our main hobby was getting the truck out of the mud (we invented a lot of amazing techinques like knotting the rope to the back-wheel and then to a tree to use the car as a wind, towing itself) unfortunately, the project failed and in the end we broke up, still it was a very, very nice experience. i never heard so much silence in my life. i never ate so many flowers. on these recordings you hear first of all, the rain, then, after the sun came out, we made tomato sauce (eating was the second main hobby, i mean, we drank wine out of 15 gallon containers and bought tomatoes bucketwise, you know) so on this day, we drove to the mayor's private house to buy his tomatoes. we squashed the tomatoes. we washed bottles to store the tomato sauce. we lit the outside oven and cooked the sauce on it. in the end we had a nice spaghetti tomato sauce for ,well, a few days. we had a chill out hippy session on the porch (you can hear my 2 year old son wenzel asking stefano a mixture of 'come stai?' (how are you?) and 'cosa fai?' (what are you doing?)) the last track are crickets in the night. i think that this recording is especially amazing because it sounds like an electronic noise but it really is (as all the other recordings) a pure field recording with no editing done at all (just recorded from a very close distance) enjoy. jeph jermantrees & shrubs - 2000” compact disc recordable

  • (29:39)
autumn press release...
when i first moved to cottonwood in 1999, i spent a lot of time walking around with my recorder, sampling the sonic surroundings. i was surprised at the difference in sonority compared to seattle, where i previously lived. the dryness here lent everything a crispness and fragility that i had forgotten. i experimented a lot with contact mics and my stereo cassette recorder, spacing the mics far apart and attaching them to two (or more) things, mostly plants. these recordings are from my yard, and include a catclaw acacia and several other plants which i've forgotten now. the recorder i used would not allow me to monitor the recording as it happened (who designs these things?!?!?!), so i had to wait until it was over to hear it. i am often amazed at the wide array of sounds and timbres registered by these cheap devices. che chenblock flute signal #1 b/w t-h-r-s-h-l-d-s” c52 cassette

  • block flute signal #1

  • t-h-r-s-h-l-d-s
april 2012 release ; ... lovely set of extended flute-drone antics (the a-side ; not dissimilar from the reed-bed room-toned determinations of yoshi wada’s “lament” ) b/w a more event-heavy assemblage of held tones & rippling interference patternage(s) ...

che chen - block flute signal #1 / t-h-r-s-h-l-d-s cassette
release date: 04/03/12
100 copies

professionally duplicated cassette with laser printed j-card
artwork by che chen
mastered by greg davis

this is one of che's first proper solo releases (after last year's excellent pulaski wave 7" and some self-released recordings). che uses a nice palette of instruments along with tape recorders / loops / delay to create warm fidelity, organic, and pulsing sounds. side a is a beautiful long form flute meditation. side b is an episodic composition alternating between field recordings and instruments / tones, reflecting the ideas of thresholds from outside to in, passing through, up and down. movements from one space to another. che's music hints at aspects of christina kubisch, phill niblock and/or takehisa kosugi's music while forging his own unique path in our current digital age.

block flute signal #1 - a long form piece that works with the harmonic and timbral possibilities of a simple set of materials. two block flutes--a bass recorder and small double recorder (eastern european in origin)--played by humming and blowing simultaneously to create more than one pitch. the tape loop consists of a simple two-note pattern played on the double recorder, pitched down one octave.

(double flute, bass recorder, voice and tape)

t-h-r-s-h-l-d-s - conceived of as a sequence of episodic concrete sounds, out of an interest in listening to things one at a time, as discrete sound forms, that progress in series. intervals of silence and field recordings made while passing through various thresholds and doorways form transitions between the various sounds.

(zither, sine wave generators, feedback, tape delay and field recordings)

minoru sato -m/s & asuna - measure in nature cd

release date: 05/01/12
200 copies

silk-screened cardboard ecopak
artwork by saiko kimura
mastered by greg davis

minoru sato & asuna have been working together over the last 8 years or so. they have previously put out 2 excellent records (on spekk and senufo). their duo finds common ground from two distinct voices. minoru is known for his sound work exploring lucier-esque paths of making physical phenomena audible and the use of feedback and natural resonant frequencies. asuna is quite a musical chameleon, ranging from noise blasts, free improv, beats, pop songs, dense organ drones, field recordings and toy music sound collages.

'measure in nature' collects two long form pieces recorded in 2004 & 2011 spanning the width of their collaboration so far.

'resonances transition in nature states' highlights asuna's contribution a bit more, a thick shimmering and pulsating bed of prepared reed organ drone stasis (reed organs with the keyboard and entire casing removed just leaving the chromatic organ reeds, motor / air system and soundboard) subtly accentuated and filtered through minoru's resonant tubes and vases.

'solid vibrations of each organ through nrf amplification' highlights minoru's system. shifting tonal centers of pure resonant frequency feedback through glass tubes and vases along with asuna's crackling and burnt organ motor textures. this piece is less static than the first with more arcs and waves and weight.

i've been working on putting together a release with these two wonderful japanese musicians for several years now and im thrilled with what finally came together. it was worth the wait. this is an especially focused, conceptually tight and musically rich album.

mirror to mirror is alex twomey from los angeles. his previous mirror to mirror music has been released on ekhein, jugular forest, arbor, gift tapes and more. while alex usually offers up blissful cloud spaces, here on 'yesterday' he moves in a much more melodic way. joyous sequences, bright shapes & radiant harmonics. reminiscent at times of michaal stearns' 'm'ocean'. alex still retains the blissful, peaceful and lush feelings but now its shaded with more movement, energy and inertia. the shape of things to come?

michael shannon has been a quiet force in the seattle music scene and elsewhere for many many years. his anomalous records lp 'laguz' first caught my attention and he also made an excellent album 'raido' for digitalis. mike's music is often a one man band affair. he plays everything from bass to percussion to stones / leaves / sticks to dilruba to tibetan bowls and more'sensa atmospheres' is a long form piece that he composed in 1992. it weaves a beautiful tapestry of sounds. a lovely ethno-electro-acoustic journey full of field recordings, home built percussion, oscillators, erhu and dilruba. mike has always been making cool music way before it was cool.

jeph jerman - arrastre cassette (c42)

release date: december 2010
150 copies
professionally duplicated cassette with laser printed j-card

we have a set of surprisingly resonant pot lids in our kitchen, which i've used in various recordings in the past and one night while doing the dishes i had the idea to try playing them in the manner of tibetan singing bowls, by dragging a thick wooden dowel around their rims. i found that with a little practice this worked well, so i made a multi-track recording of four of them. i then, as i am want to do, became obsessed with this idea, buying up piles of pot lids from local second-hand shops and making more recordings, some using as many as ten different lids.

after two months of this activity i was left with over two hours of recordings of resonant metal drones, which i enjoy so much that i thought i'd share them all. comprising nine pieces of music ranging in length from 5 to 20 minutes, these recordings are available on three separate releases, on three different formats: a full-length vinyl record, a 45 minute cd-r and a 40 minute cassette.

arrastre is the spanish word for drag, and also the name of a 19th century mining apparatus, wherein large boulders were drug around an ore-filled pit by means of a large spindle and arm, driven by pack animals.

this cassette release is 1/3 of the arrastre triptych.

chris weisman - transparency 2cd

artwork by ryan storm

in a hardly circulated and seldom referenced 1967 interview with paul mccartney and john lennon from during the making of what would become sergeant pepper's lonely hearts club band, they use the words "jokes" and "folk" in describing their new music. with this crazy perceptual distance between the artist and the public in mind - between what they think they're doing and how we end up boxing it - consider chris weisman's song-based albums not as "pop" but as an almost side effect of jazz, an upper extension (if you will) over a base of changes playing, free improvisation, and guitar teaching.

jazz is more self consciously a field in pursuit of novel pitch relations than the retro rainbow of what calls itself pop now (though his vermont boot grinds deceptively deeply into many of its potholes), and the project of making wrong notes work - at the expense of popularity for over 20 years - is transparently weisman's nerdy ambition (this is the author of a book called "nonmusical patterns and their mystical meanings").

"transparency" - chris' latest (always imagined to be his last) - : joke folk through and through, his "the beatles", 30 songs and all.

- donald christopher 2011

chris weisman's new double album folk/pop masterpiece.
his most personal & accessible album yet.
for fans of elliott smith, the beatles, and weird music.

kurt weisman - orange cd

release date: 02/02/2010
300 copies

silk-screened cardboard ecopak
with black & white woodblock
print copy insert by ben stamper

orange
the color?
a town in new jersey?
the flipside of the beatles?
the fruit?
the sun?
the unrhymeable?

orange is kurt weisman's second album
(after 2008's spiritual sci-fi, a few 7"s & e.p.'s, and his work in feathers)
it is a brilliantly chiseled gem. a beautiful garnet, or perhaps an orange chalcedony.

there are traces of traditional norwegian melodies, atonal counterpoint, simple folk songs, new age blues, spacy doo wop, neo-classicism, love songs and a detour of the following....(orange lady, orange was the color of her dress then blue silk, shades of orange, orange juice blues, woodsmoke & oranges, onion orange, apples & oranges, funktion orange, draped in fluorescent orange, orange claw hammer, oranges & lemons)

kurt abandoned the micro-editing & digital processing of his previous music (for now)
there isn't a trace of computer trickery on orange which makes this a straight forward, well balanced, deceptively simple(r), honest album.
there isn't a single note of filler here, every sound sits still in perfect place.

kurt lives in a cabin in the woods near putney, vermont.
it seems that the quiet, peaceful isolation permeated this music.
these songs were ingrained and steeped deeply within kurt's soul (and fingers) over the course of a few years. now he is a mirror reflecting them back to us with love to the universe.

orange is mostly kurt singing and playing guitars but there are tasteful additions of clarinets from robert stillman (horses) and kinetic sparkling keyboards from eliot krimsky (glass ghost) & a touch of other instruments & sounds by kurt. included is a nice insert of a woodblock print of a horse by ben stamper (ben + vesper) who also helped produce the album.

these are songs of ascension.
(thermal clouds. bird flight. spirits rising. love growing. spirals. wide open skies. heavenward.)

in his special way, maybe kurt has found his own center, his deep bliss, his unique way to tap into the universal body / mind.

ruth garbusrendezvous with rama” compact disc

  • falling down to earth (4:05)
  • fly away (4:17)

  • halloween (2:23)
  • tarp face (3:20)

january 2010 release ; lovely set of guitar/voice studies from vermonter ruth garbus, reminding (in mixed degrees) of kath bloom’s sides (both w/ & w/o loren connors) & linda perhacs’ effortlessly breathy “parallelograms” ... but then again i imagine most will compare the omnipresent patina of tape-hiss & chiming guitar figures to lizgrouperharris ; fans of whom will most certainly want to investigate herein ...

ruth garbus - rendezvous with rama cd

release date: 01/04/2010
300 copies
silk-screened cardboard ecopak
artwork by ruth garbus
recorded by ryan power

ruth garbus used to be in a band called feathers. you might remember them if you were absorbed in the neo-psych-folk-whatever-you-call-it scene about half a decade ago or so. (she still plays with kyle t. in a band called happy birthday / she lives with c. weisman in brattleboro / her sister is merrill tune-yards)

ruth has been slowly crafting a bunch of solo songs in private. a couple of years ago, she made a short album called ruthie's requests on a little cassette machine. (if you blinked, you probably missed it)

well now its 2010 and she is here with some new vermont music.
(and there is more to come....)
this is her orbital turn.
a chance for her tones to float out over the airwaves now...
we are very happy to present you with ruth's debut album, rendezvous with rama.

these days, not many people can pull off a record this lovely of just electric guitar and vocals but ruth does it. her music flows with ease and beauty and grace. her guitar parts suggest cascading choirs and unheard contrapuntal vistas. and her lyrics invoke scenes from:

imaginary worlds (visual art)
everyday worlds (house painter)
we are lucky to get a glimpse into the creative fantasy/reality lands of this quiet artist.

recorded in burlington, vermont by ryan power in a large warehouse with spacious natural reverb.
an intimate fall / winter vibe captured on a 2-track reel to reel tape machine. this is perfect music for snowfalling(s)

fragile and flowing
dark and joyous
natural and quiet
movement and stillness

(possible reference point: vashti bunyan singing & playing an electric guitar, recording for ecm?)
ruth's songs get deeper and different and beyond any of those easy references.

is she a singer/songwriter? folk musician? chanteuse? torch singer? jazz vocalist? new age artist? tropicalia? early music?
im not sure what we should call it.
maybe all of the above.
well it doesn't really matter anyhow because
we think you'll think ruth's new album is super good.

autumn (usa) #ar 009 ep

kurt weisman / chris weismanover the shadow's door” seven inch single record

  • kurt weisman - over the shadow's door

  • chris weisman - over the shadow's door
october 2009 release ; split single from the two weisman brothers kurt (older, higher voice) & chris (younger, lower) housed in art by the weisman sister emma ...

whereas kurt sets the tone with a lovely, straight-ahead finger-picked guitar accompaniment to his overdubbed voices (damn, he get so high !!!) ; chrispanegyric on home recording and christopher forgues is harder to read, cloaked in looped drum-stick hits and a “trickylegato leitmotif straight outta the back-tablature pages of guitar world ...

full-color sleeve holds a bubblegum-pink vinyl easter egg ; nice one !!!

ar009 : kurt weisman & chris weisman - over the shadow's door 7"

over the shadow's door is a unified artistic project by the ever creative weisman siblings. a title was chosen and then kurt, chris and emma set about making music / art to correspond with the title. this is the result...

kurt open things up on side a with lovely spiralling acoustic guitar patterns with kurt's trademark high angelic tenor falsetto vocals (along with the ghost of kurt weisman singing even higher vocal harmonies!)

"no i can not be a man anymore"

on side b, chris slashes and cuts through echoed word raps over spindly guitar licks and drum stick clicks (he'll explain it to you in the song). the chorus reaches a droney low voice counterpoint stasis. a nice little coda at the end with brazilian guitar tones and a chunky bassline.

"who says that i can't find the floor?"emma's artwork is a wonderful children's book style cross hatch illustration. boy crawling on floor trying to open the purple shadow door. boy on the first floor climbing a ladder to peer at the ceiling galaxies / stars. strange paintings on the wall above the orange couch. are there are more questions than answers?

300 hand numbered copies with hand stamped labels on colored vinyl (pink & blue)
