len lye was one of the most innovative artists of his era. based in new york’s greenwich village during the 1950s and 60s, lye was a leading figure in the development of kinetic art. he designed and built a series of moving, sound-emitting sculptures that are breathtaking visually and sonically.

phil dadson is a new-zealand based composer/performer/instrument builder - on my radar through founding “from scratch” - a new zealand localized “scratch orchestra cover band.”

this disc features a bewildering selection of sonorities from a batch of sound-sculptures of philips’ own devising...

sound tracks is the result of a unique collaboration between phil dadson and producer wayne laird of atoll cds.

sound tracks maps a sequence of solo improvisations on a range of invented instruments, with track titles - gloop, peel the unseen, to a circular mirror, laced cool, - as intriguing and evocative as the instruments themselves; longstring zitherum (3 metre long zither / drum combination), gloopdrum (single string and drum-membrane resonator), nundrum (a modified bass-drum resonator with multiple threaded rods), song/stones, overtone-vocals and headrush pedal.
