cloaked light / pale blue skysplit” long playing record

  • cloaked light - clear of,

  • pale blue sky - someday
  • pale blue sky - sometime
june 2010 release ; split one (right down the middle) with peter friel’s cloaked light resisting development throughout a side-long band-pass filtered held-fourth (i admire his adherence to keeping things simple & textural) & mike pollard’s pale blue sky introducing an open-ended major-key floater, later emphasising the 9th for extra added emotional whoomph ...

the minimal, grey-noise design elements works quite well given the included sonics, with arbor even going asfaras including a printed inner-sleeve with a just-trapezoidal array on each side ...
arbor press release...

arbor 145 cloaked light / pale blue sky split 12"ep

working together, but differently. clear of, shows cloaked light working within a new mode; an expanded temporal sensitivity through field recording and discrete static chordsslow movement- revealing growth and decay at the subtlest thresholds; disappearing music with a heavy presence, a shifting sense of space, not in the room, but of the room.

pale blue sky’s someday, sometime approaches a similar expansion of perception and unobscuring blur. through tape manipulation, the inner workings of tonal relationships are placed under focus; extending time to reveal new moments; widening the view.  distorting to understand; a reorienting pause. originally conceived to coincide with the cloaked light / pale blue sky california tour with pedestrian deposit, infinite body, earn, and mirror to mirror in january 2010; a testament to a common point and it’s different trajectoriesapproaching the possibility.

mastered by pete swanson; cut at 45 rpm.

ryan garbesreal sugar b/w the lights” seven inch single record

  • real sugar

  • the lights
february 2010 release ; a kind of bedroom overdubbed krautrock from the mind(s)/limb of iowa city’s ryan garbes ... never heard much raccoo-oo-oon myself, but this stuff has me kind of curious ; equal parts silver-applesian electro-funk and wobbly cluster-lineage bontempt ...
arbor press release...
arbor 140 ryan garbes real sugar b/w the lights 7” ep

ryan garbes is the drummer of iowa city bands such as wet hair, dunebuggy, trash dog, and formerly raccoo-oo-oon. his recordings under his own name represent a unique brand of solo multi-track recording with a seamless integrity; through a skillful use of instrumentation and recording technique, garbes eschews notions of low fidelity for songs reminiscent of traditional american garage rock produced in the haze of an early 90’s uk aesthetic. genuine pop songs, cloaked in a comforting wash of reverb, as if lou reed had done a record for creation; more ecstatic than obstructed garbes’ voice is a refreshing one outside the continuum of the contemporary four-track bedroom pop.

february 2010 release ; debut lp from mike pollard’s new post-treetops project pale blue sky ...

five (easy) pieces that jostle & flow, radiating clean electronic warmth ... much like the “ambientinterludes on my bloody valentine’s “loveless” ; yet somehow even more soporific ... very nice.

arbor 137 pale blue sky shades of grey 12” ep

pale blue sky is the new project from mike pollard (formerly treetops)shades of grey is the project’s genesis; a long considered transition uniting the organic drone-work of the former project with compositional structures. the recordings embody a delicate sense of distance; staring out at the moving landscape obscured by the mediation of the window. through blurred fidelity the origin of melody is placed under microscopic inquiry; an exploration into the moment of tonal interaction. pale blue sky utilizes repetition and non-linear movements, attempting to reconcile simplicity, form, and sentiment through modes of difference. placing focus on spatial concerns, as well as emotive potential, the five songs contained within are each different embodiments of the possibility of the transformative decay of remembrance. an ephemeral glimpse; the moment has already passed. for quiet, distanced listening.

sun circlelessness” double long playing record set

  • drums

  • tambouras

  • tambouras

  • gongs
june 2010 release ; hard to believe this is only the secondproper” outing from zach wallace & greg davissun circle, here expanding their vision to four separate side-length pieces, each featuring the duo on a pair of the same acoustic instrument ...

it’s nice to hear the “drums” piece (first performed at the root strataon land” fest) without it’s rising electronic component - the locked-in zones & slight, almost imperceivable harmonic shapes that start billowing into your ears mid-side are unlike anything i’ve heard on record ... by contrast the veritable flurry of buzzing overtones that make up the two tamboura pieces almost seem like overload after the opening piece’s head-space clearance ... and the final gongs set is the perfect come-down from a good hour-plus of next-level deep listening ...

... you can read the art direction as sparse or endlessly complex ; much in the same way you can the music ... it appears to make perfect sense given the aesthetic appropriations & the whole package works together to put zach & greg’s whole zen-like mythos in order ... nice record !!!
arbor press release...
arbor 135 sun circle  lessness double lp album

following in the tradition of minimalist composers such as la monte young, yoshi wada, and charlemagne palestine, sun circle exemplifies a contemporary focus on long form drone music. members greg davis and zach wallace have shown their interest in the field most recently with extended works on kranky and root strata respectively; together on lessness, they show a deep-rooted interest in the power of simple forms.

building upon themes from their recent solo work (davis’ subtly shifting tonal work with electronic oscillators and wallace’s acoustic drone work on the glass armonica)lessness is comprised of four side long works each exhibiting a different acoustic instrument in isolation. exploring drums, tambouras (both rhythmic and droning), and gongs with a meditative precision, davis and wallace’s work seems at once both mechanic and human; the product of focus, revealing a vast beauty within the subtlety of the geometric potential of sound.

copper glove, the new project from baltimore’s door (formerly earth crown; who shared splits with secret abuse and kites on past arbor releases), shows a further progression of his one man industrial-noise synth unit. in opposition to his former work, copper glove is more mindful of composition; utilizing tone generators and processed synthesis and vocals to present a dense cut up analog form of industrial concréte. door’s nihilistic optimism carries itself with a sense of effortlessness; ideological aggression, a pure translation. with focused energy, the noise of the machine continues as man controls it. the city is destroyed but we can still live here, forever.

arbor press release...

arbor 122 cloaked light plain curtain c15

these early four-track experiments from peter friel’s cloaked light project offer a look into focus. with the slowest subtlety changes grow, only perceptible through reflection. a new form of seeking to understand; a non-linear music, offering a space of contemplation to look forward and behind.

on a long green hall friel shifts meaning and reorients the place of speech in a lucierian experiment with self-help tapes. on but i’m trying, subtle tonal expansions mirror the manipulation of speech on the previous track, though without the recognizable markers of language the result is more obscured. each track offers insight to the others processes. recorded in summer 2009, these tracks are some of the earliest from the project, a precursory inquiry to the tapes on ekhein and monorail. upcoming split 12 ep with pale blue sky further explores the nature of tonal interactions and non-linear explorations of sound.

  • three legged race - whipped secrets
november 2010 release ; great to finally have some new music from robertthree legged racebeatty (his last, the impeccable “living order / mourning order” set for tone filth was over 2 years ago !!! and even that was a reissue of earlier work) ... his side here is an incredible 3-part suite of gurglingperiodelectronics that retains its melodic charm throughout, even while run through a wringer of home-brew circuits & a fidelity grabbed wholesale via nik pascal’s tractor beam ...

jeff witscher’s side is an epic slice of the real, formatting new phase-aligment vectors, pronounced use of the heartstring-tugging descending line cliché, and at least one morose held-chord weeper (for the ladies) ; all rendered with the spot-on precision that we’ve grown to expect / love ...

arbor 111; lp album
rene hell / three legged race violin petal {auden} / whipped secrets

rene hell and three legged race investigate the space where classically outsider musical forms begin to intersect with more popular ones. taking cues from science fiction and early electronic / tape music and translating them through lens of minimal techno and the personal logic of bedroom recording ; both creating something unclassifiable in it’s hybrid form.

rene hell’s four part suite violin petal {auden} follows his recent lp on type with it’s distinct form of digital synthesis and future-concrète; cyclic music expanding and contracting throughout a cybernetic space. the confusion of communication, control source unknownsignals crossed along a technological drift.

robert beatty’s three legged race presents a three part suite, whipped secrets. investigating herein an application of earlyautomaticsynthesizer music manipulated into linear form based song structure. developing softly, the first movement sounds like a loner folk recording from a distant future time ; complete with vocals, staring sad eyed across an open expanse, contemplating the state of things. slowly, this form unravels into a more abstract and ‘automatic’ based territory ; rhythmic and melodic staccato signals possessed with an almost intelligent logic of their own. communication shifts from the man to his machine.

august 2009 release ; i’m going to admit defeat here a little bit - one on hand you’ve gotta appreciate james’ whole private-universe-view right now (the printed inner-sleeves offer a ghastly, low-bit collage of iconography from lawnmower man, the robocop franchise, the stealth bomber, vin diesel (?), kirk cameron, etc ... all set over a burning terminator-lineage wasteland) - there’s certainly no one else out there repurposing such “questionableiconographies in anywhere near as interesting a manner ...

... but slogging through this 80+ minutes of plundered 80s tv commercials, soundbites, and bits from said movies, all mixed to the absolute lowest-of-lo-fi‘s ... i can’t help but shake the feeling that there’s, you know, actual great music being made elsewhere right now that’s more deserving of the oddly cult-ish following mr. ferraro’s managed to summon this past year or two ... not saying there isn’t anything redeemable going on here - ferraro’s adherence to his personal ideal is entirely laudable - but i’m finding more & more that my own enjoyment of his music has to do with introductory reactions to his conceptual framework rather than an actual enjoyment of each new signal being piped through the gates ...

... just my $0.02 here ; of course if you’ve been following this stuff all along, this will be a fine addition to the manifold stack of output james has been pumping out in nicer & nicer editions (certainly glad he’s graduated to actual labels & label-systems) ; as always, your call ...

arbor106 james ferraro - "citrac" 2xlp

the citrac collection presents one of james ferraro’s most cinematic visions; showing his recent mode of soundworld creation in top form. by shying away from pure musical creation and opting towards the organic birth of sonic universes james finds a new way to tell a story. evoking vastly imaginative imagery, this 80+ minute suite spanning two lps, contains the previously released “postremo techno mundus symposium”, excerpts and alternative edits from liquid metal’s alternative soundtrack to “digital overdrive”, and the all new “digital tribe”. presenting deep-nightmarish atmospheres of surveillance and captivity on through the rush of the open road; the hypnotic, lo-fi result is one that could only come from ferraro’s alien mind, eternally stuck in a 1980s vision of an impossibly archaic future.

carlos giffoni’s heavy synthesizer work recalls the crushing, massiveness of early industrial music. completely consuming the air around it with heavy vibrations and total deprivation. these four tracks rip holes through the sonic barriers, loud and powerful but with entrancing subtleties and discreet builds. the nature of the 7” format does not harm giffoni’s work which normally exists in extended lengths; instead very succinct and unwavering compositions result: creating four vignettes of grey industrial zones. as the person responsible for no fun productions and the no fun fest, this brooklyn transplants presence in the current progression of the genre is undeniable.

january 2009 release ; ... the mass-market debut of taylor richardson (sunburned member) & danoneohtrix point neverlopatin’s space-madrigal unit infinity window ...

whereas dan’s solo work has a more melancholy flair to it, these are straight atmosphere / lift-off burners, with layers upon layers of almost subliminally warbling synths cut with straight arpeggiations and gated patterns ... a few pages torn from the early tangerine dream / popol vuh cookbook(s), sure, but there’s enough in the way of modern synth-music sensibility (nary a phase-lock, fm, or pulse-width modulation to be found) at work here as to lift this out of the bin of pure pastiche and into the realm of pure mind-expansion ...

new york synth duo infinity window have been crafting their game for well over a year without much documentation. comprised of dan lopatin (oneohtrix point never) and taylor richardson (prehistoric blackout), this lp shows them at the pinnacle of self-realization. equally influenced by john carpenter and the taj mahal travelers, they create traveling music; music that has the power to transport and overwhelm the listener with vibes outside of those presently available to them. the a side consists of two tracks, both clouded in a heavy haze of fog, dark and heavy though their clarity exists underneath the shroud. the b side’s lone track “skull theft” is the full circle realization of the first two tracks: a light is illuminated and the fog begins to clear. mastered by keith fullerton whitman.

the theme here is on harsh drone work ; removed from the filth & grit these two side-length pieces wouldn’t be out of place on your average collection of contemporary minimalism ... yet filtered through the sensibilities of the underground noise sector, things get much more interesting, with ren’s blown-out oscillator (coming across as a sähko-lineage exercise in pure tone-alteration) leading into matt’s tonal void ... really nice stuff !!!

arbor78 god willing / privy seals split lp

god willing and privy seals are two of the prime purveyors of meditative harsh tones. god willing’s guitar and oscillator drone has been reaching epic levels of hypnosis lately and this piece is a great example. the repetitive nature of textured signals act like the swaying charm of the pocket watch: onward march. matthew sullivan has been crafting his earn project recently, and this, one of the final privy seals recordings acts as a logical bridge. heavy, hi-end guitar and tape interlacing: a harsh movement, but possessing transcendently soothing qualities buried under the deprivation of distorted tones. at the end of the hallway a door lies open. a long overdue document of the la diaspora.

june 2009 release ; it’s neat how this stuff keeps cycling around - one minute you’re expecting (and ... you get) some fully rectified pedal abuse ... then the next the polar opposite ; bedroom guitar soul-baring straight out of the roy montgomery songbook (listen to the sound-sample) ...

as someone who clearly enjoys both, i’m psyched that we’ve finally arrived at the point in time where it’s not only possible to straddle these two very polar divides, but in fact acceptable ... mr. witscher pulls of both with admirable aplomb ; neither the squared-off drone-noise and decidedly more “friendly” guitar pieces come across as half-measures, but ultimately as components of a greater whole. well done ...

the malformed compositions of c. spencer yeh and sick llama come from opposing spectrums of noise music, though their similarities are undeniable. whether it be yeh’s solo piece for violin or sick llama’s gunked tape work, the spirit of improvisation shines through. on yeh’s track, the churning sounds of metal scrapes and light tinges, like crossed electric static and growing, buzzing drones are the result of one violin. his unique approach to the instrument marks him as one of the most exciting improvisers today whether it be with his solo work or through his work in burning star core. sick llama’s untitled piece is one of his most concise and interesting tracks; crushing and dirty with the hiss of tape static. coming from the stoned mind of heath moreland of fag tapes, the expected tape aesthetic is transferred to vinyl with a compilation of cut up compositions, evoking a series of mystery sound sources.

in an edition of 400 7”s in proprinted fold over sleeves with art by maya miller of heavy tapes / religious knives.

arbor 48 soft shoulder - "untitled" cd-r

tempe, arizona is a creative hotspot over run with positive youth and a supportive community.   soft shoulder is the in house posi-punk band comprised of james, james, and ashley of the clatter crew tent city.  on this release they turn in their catchy hooks and traditional structure for two 15+ minute improvised pieces that fall somewhere between tc and graveyards.  total washed out summertime drones for the punk dudes or sunshine thrash for the noise dudes.

in an edition of 100 numbered copies with stamped discs and an insert within a cardstock print bound with neon nineties nylon bracelets.

youth of the beastlantern” seven inch single record

arbor press release...
arbor46 youth of the beast - "lantern" 7"

youth of the beast is pure primitive electronics, suffocating saxophone scrawl and epic percussion.   acting as the solo output for raccoo-oo-oon’s andy spore, this record is yotb’s first vinyl offering following up a few tapes on night people and fuck it tapes.  blistering vocal screeches and mixer feedback blasts meld with stray tones as brass wails and drums are pounded.  spore is a master of channeling the spirits right into the basement where he crafts his jams, creating a captivating mass of noise and psychedelic signals crossing for a painfully beautiful 10 minutes.  breathless sax solos and massive tribal percussion interspersed throughout.  the sum of all these parts is something intense, unknown; an ever evolving sonic creature as bleak as it is restless.

in an edition of 315 records with epic xeroxed double sided/double foldover (you’ll understand it when you see it) sleeves and printed labels by spore.

arbor43 shearing pinx / silver daggers split 7"

time to tell all the ’77 dudes to get hip to the ’07 sound.  vancouver’s shearing pinx and los angeles’ silver daggers are north america’s ambassadors for the new wave of skronk/thrash/post-whatever punk.

the pinx play angular, expertly timed, staccato waves of noise and punk.  two long songs sandwiching one short one in typical pinx fashion.

the daggers (experts of interpreting animal sounds w/ regular rock instruments) create utterly epic art-punk jams complete with swirling synths and horns based around solid drumming and guitar/bass interplay.

one track was recorded live at the smell, coming complete with mosh philosophies, while the second track recalls david byrne’s “boombox experiments” circa stop making sense. be sure to check out their new record on load!

in an edition of 400 numbered copies on concrete grey vinyl w/ hand stamped labels in 2 color silkscreen cardstock sleeves and a long insert.

warmthwarmth” long playing record

arbor press release...
arbor41 warmth lp

even though warmth main man steev thompson still appears to be incommunicado totally epic recordings continue to surface.  before roxanne jean police was officially over and steev still lived in chicago, he joined up with another then chicago resident branden diven of quilts/american grizzly records. the jams that were created filled a couple of cdrs and the warmth side of the split with quintana roo on not not fun.

this lp consists of a remixed and edited version of the original cdr running at just under 45 minutes.  forgotten smog floats through a northside basement.  sounds emanate but their source is totally unrecognizable.  quiet growing tonal blobs erupt into washes of aural color.  a complete union of samplers, synths, vocals, guitar, organs, percussion, and electronics merge to create the sounds contained within; a loss of individual existence. completely serene.

in an edition of 300 lps on creamy yellow vinyl with hand stamped labels in pro-printed and screened fold over sleeves with art by roy tatum and an insert by steev.

bingesreturn to whatever” compact disc recordable

arbor press release...
arbor19 binges - "return to whatever" cd-r

binges are a hometown favorite here in chicago.  up until this point their music has existed to the public in one form: the live set.  for the benefit of those outside of chicago, the duo, comprised of drummer chris robert and guitar/bass/drum/mic/tape dude anthony decanini, recently teamed up with midwestern raccoo-oo-oon to cover the west coast with their syncopated improvisations. it is only fitting that their first release be made up of live material (recorded to dat tape and mastered with the utmost care).

decanini creates a vast number of growing and receding loops from his guitar, bass, contact mic, tapes, and other sources which act as the perfect foil to robert’s percussion (a serious thing to behold).  it isn’t so much one person acting as the leader as much as the two creating an absolute sonic union of sounds blurring the line between free jazz and noise.

in an edition of 200 screened cdrs in screened sleeves.

tent/citytent/city” compact disc recordable

arbor press release...
arbor11 tent/city cd-r

past the desert smoke and arid dust trails of arizona lies an oasis of broken folk.  occupied by tent/city, this area is like a river of creativity and blessed drones.  six artful dwellers armed with instruments ranging from pots and pans to synths and guitars, pianos and flutes, have the perfect recipe for clattery commune psych. taken out of their natural habitat and thrown into the studio they offer these five tracks to the coyote spirit.

the first three tracks act as studies focusing on different pairings of the featured instrumentation.  this culminates in the fourth track, an epic 12 minute long jam full of rotted synth, flute prayers, electric guitar with hints of the raccoon’s good blessing, all over a foundation of unwavering percussion.

in an edition of 90 triangle stickered cd-rs  with an insert all in a hand sewn paisley pouch complete with button clasp.
