tom johnson
rational melodies / bedtime stories
ag12 cd

i want to find the music, not to compose it". this statement, one of tom johnson's most effective, explains the general sense of the music of this cd and of most of tom's musical research. the rational melodies are one of the most important instrumental cycles of the "new music" repertoire. here we have the application of rational methodology to musical composition, using additive operations, combinations, permutations, substitutions, inversions and other logical processes as directed by the ear of a passionate musician. "i am certainly not the first person to work with logical sequences and formulas," says johnson. but we, the listeners, must thank him for letting us hear clearly (and musically) this rationality.

the bedtime stories can be heard as delicate, peculiar musical "nursery rhymes"; it's a little 12-story compendium of sound that takes us on an amazing journey in the world of numbers.

roger heaton is, in this disc, simply fantastic. it’s hard to find a better word to describe the sensations that surface as we listen to him. the british clarinetist give us the essence of johnson’s music. in his interpretation rationality becomes joy, inspiration, strength; melodies appear in chic classical clothes and his virtuosity (always needed by the score) perfectly adheres to the scores. and there is also the elegant reading of the texts of the bedtime stories, with that perfect english accent and that clarinet that seems coming from the pages of a fairy-tales (and numbers) book.

esther ferrer is a multi-faceted spanish artist, living in paris for years, but traveling all over europe (much in italy) and in the rest of the world. presenting performances, installations, photographic works, she is a great exponent of "total art" (she was in the group zaj from 1967 until the group discontinued in 1996). for this cd cover, she offers one of her visual structures following the prime number series, an aspect of her work that goes particularly well with the rational processes of her husband, tom johnson. a particular thanks to esther for her kind permission to allow us to use this image.

david monacchi
paesaggi di libero ascolto
ag11 cd

david monacchi’s eclectic approach to sound include both the acoustic and the electronic world.

the real and the artificial. he easily mix them together and, working with a lot of different sound sources, he’s able to define a rich and ever-growing palette of “sound colors”. his primary research with field recordings forms his “travelling baggage” of inspirations. his meticolous action and dedication gives the exact coordinates of his method, so well balanced between the “natural(chaotic) and the “built(rational). this collection represents an observation point on the electro-acoustic side of his work.

la selva degli orologi, is an enchanting landscape of mechanical objects brought to life by mean of a clear musical sensibility. acqua, for water concrete sounds, is an exploration and a cinematic journey thru the first source life. ciclo circadiano, for environmental sounds, is the sum of years of on-site natural recordings, assembled and re-worked, in a genuine “concrete” way, over the 24-hours division of the day. intorno all’origine represent a sort of “darwinian” summation, a path that the author rides, going thru different states (the archaic recalling, the real images, the artificial soundscapes, the new sound experiences) finally finding his personal way of making music. paesaggi di libero ascolto (free-listenings landscapes) is the colourful portrait of a joyful musical mind, that deserve an attentive listening.

biography

sound designer, composer and researcher in the field of sound recording and eco-acoustics. the specifics of monacchi’s research come from the field recordings of natural sonic environments all over the world, which, after laboratory electro-acoustic analysis and composition, become concerts and multimedia installations.

studied electronic music at conservatory of music of pesaro - italy under e. giordani and attended advance courses in composition under w. branchi and s. sciarrino, in electro-acoustics under b. truax and at ircam - paris. he won several international competitions like russolo-pratella, locarno film festival, multiple sound festival-maastricht and was awarded the “erato farnesina” grant by the ministry of foreign affairs for the “world soundscape project” in vancouver.

since 2000, taught the course of musical communication iv and the lab of sound recording techniques and applied sound design at the university of macerata (italy) - faculty of communication sciences.

in collaboration with greenpeace, went to amazon to collect 3d sound samples of the entire 24 hours cycle into the main environments of the equatorial primary forest. through almost 20 hours of extremely rich sound material, he composed the electro-acoustic opera “fragments of a sonic world in extintion” which toured theatres and contemporary music venues.

he collaborate as sound designer and composer to the project tevereterno curated by kristin jones, and to the sonorization of urban spaces and archaeological areas with architect l. cannella. as recording engineer, he’s the director of the coclearia mobile recording studio, which works on productions of early, classic and contemporary music.

his research activity and compositions have been broadcasted on several radio programs such as italian national radio2 and rai international, and on tv programs such as the national italian television rai 3 program "fuori orario".

if, bwana
fire chorus
ag09 cd

fire chorus is a work of “construction”. if, bwana (alias, or, as you prefer, “personification”, of al margolis), presents a sound form starting from the concept of “perception”. his concept of electroacoustic music doesn’t belong to the idea of “appropriation(which is behind the gestures of many people now working with natural, non-musical, or “other” sound sources). if, bwana uses his raw materials as animated objects, letting them appear and disappear in his own sound structures. he creates an environment for the sounds, mixing “music” and noise, human voices, landscape voices, machine voices. the four long tracks on this album are four explorations and, perhaps, four different sound “constructions”. chimes is a long, continuous immersion, from the inside to the outside. fire chorus paints a picture such as those of hieronimus bosch, a kind of imploded soundtrack for a complicated and distorted world. day 8: mckenna’s brain is a collage with a strong theatrical aspect, joining metallic sounds to “details” of foreign languages. accidentally angelica, is a long, concluding, nocturnal path, a symbol of the eternal if, bwana’s wandering thru the mists of a panorama of archaic but modern sounds.

if, bwana (born al margolis) is a composer and musician. he has number of recordings under his own name, and has collaborated with such artists as david prescott, adam bohman, and tom hamilton. he’s a member of the group the styrenes. lastly, he’s the deus ex machina behind pogus productions, one of the leading labels of the american experimental scene.

2005 release ; collecting 60s tape-work from this italian composer, aligned with the studio s 2f m in florence (set up by pietro grossi) ...
ants press release...
seven electronic compositions from the end of the sixties plus one instrumental piece from 1983. this is the content of the new cd by albert mayr that “ants” is proud to present. experimentations from near 40 years ago sounding so “contemporary”, today more than ever.

in the fifties and sixties of the past century electro-acoustic music was a very élitist affair; professional equipment was expensive, not easy to find and could be afforded - in sufficient quantity to build a full-scale studio - only by institutions such as universities or broadcasting corporations. access to those hieratic places was rather difficult if you did not belong to one of the contemporary music 'churches' that were influential at the time.

this led several composers to put up a small private studio. this was the case for the studio s 2f m, created in florence by pietro grossi.

since the beginning a small group of collaborators (including myself) worked with grossi in the s 2f m ; we all were fascinated by the new sound world and grossi's radicalism. in fact, through the work with him my attitude toward music (in the widest sense) changed profoundly.

- albert mayr

the work in the s 2f m studio was of high rigour, with the resulting sound structures presented in their brut condition, without any concession to taste or to smoothing out the edges, because the essential thing was to experience the new sound world, to experiment with it.

albert mayr’s proposte sonore, realized between 1966 and 1969 - partly with the battimenti materials created earlier by pietro grossi in the florentine studio -, are certainly a beautiful example of this line of work. proposals of new elements to be integrated in the puzzle; proposte (proposals), and not studies or exercises and not even compositions, presented with the doubts of a listener who is eager to find out what will happen, and not with the presumption and the certainties of those who want rather to find than to seek. a listener who tries to understand and mainly to perceive how ‘the sounds coming from the machine stay together’. it is, on the one hand, this pioneer aspect, and, on the other, the freshness of the results that create the interest and pleasure one proves when listening to these pieces.

poetry and texts by andrew deutsch and giuseppe caprioli.

moltitudine in labirinto is a poetic journey drawn with sound. an unveiled meeting. the minimal sequences, the recognizable character of masin’s music, here are fused with the electronicvision” of giuseppe caprioli, more harsh, materic. the result is a fascinating hybrid, a new modern music, leaden and grieved, lost voice in the maze of memories.

this cd, at the same time the new work of masin and the “first time” for caprioli, stands as a high expression in the lineage of evolution of the ever growing ambient/electronic scene.

john cage
a tribute
ag06 double cd

joshua pierce, piano & prepared piano
robert white, tenor
afmm ensemble

from the liner notes of eric salzman :

john cage wrote for keyboards throughout most of his life. most famously, he invented the so-called "prepared piano" but he also wrote for unprepared piano in both traditional and untraditional ways. his later piano works employ an almost ferocious complication and virtuosity at the outer limits of performer possibility. earlier he used electronic extensions, chance and performer collaboration in complex ways. his early keyboard music was written for himself to play, much of it meant to "accompany" modern dance performances. cage's piano, prepared and unprepared, was the orchestra for a whole genre of solo dance performance by some of the greatest figures of modern american dance.

this recording of four walls grew out of live performances by joshua pierce and dancer/choreographer sin cha hong at the seoul nymax festival and anthology film archive's courthouse theater in new york city on october 27 and 28, 1994, marking the work's fiftieth anniversary. plans to extend this album as a double cd came about as a result of mr. pierce's brilliant and relevatory performance of the composer's magnum opus: sonatas and interludes recorded "live" at the microthon festival held at new york university on may 23, 1999, marking his twenty-fifth anniversary of live performances and his association with the music of john cage, and in particular, sonatas and interludes.

a very special feature of this summation of pierce's work with the piano music of john cage, is the presence of two compositions here recorded for the very first time: the prelude (piano sextet) for six instruments in a minor, from 1946 and the three early songs, from 1933.

the 56-pages three languages booklet (english, italian and french) including photographs, liner notes by eric salzman, essay by michele porzio and extensive biographical notes of the performers, completes this double cd edition packaged in multipack jewel box.

this release represent a great occasion to approach, at the highest level, the early piano masterpieces of the 20th century most important and influential composer, uniquely performed by one of he’s most dedicated and well known interpreters.

joshua pierce

one of a handful of brilliant and creative musicians of his generation, joshua pierce's passion and sensitivity has earned him a world-wide reputation as a prolific pianist who has forged his own individual and unique style with a vast repertoire of music spanning all eras of piano literature. his technical mastery has afforded him the ability to move easily from the concerti of haydn, mozart and beethoven, to the big works of brahms, liszt, tchaikovsky, rachmaninov, to the provoking sounds of john cage, charles ives, ivan wyschnegradsky, harry partch, teo macero, karlheinz stockhausen, la monte young, toru takemitsu, swen sandstrom, maurice ohana, ben weber, sofia guibadulina and many others.

organ and silence
ag05 cd

wesley roberts, organ

a music concerned for, as the author writes in the disc notes, “… the importance of silence in music…”. this work is conceived not “for organ” but, really, for “organ and silence”, as the silence is a fundamental part of it, and it’s not possible to give it up. it’s an attempt, as the author explain “to permit as much silence as possible, without allowing the music to actually stop”.

tom johnson is one of the masters of minimalism, but he combines this with rigorous logic. his work, free from false glitters, defines, better that any other one, the sense of a research the goes beyond the strict genre definitions, and become poetic application of original ideas.

recorded in nerinx, in kentucky, spring 2001. all transparent jewel case. 8 pages booklet with author's notes and bios, in italian and english.

the application of musical criteria to the organization of time.

when we slow down a sound many times, all the way below 15 cps approximately, we perceive as a series of discrete pulses. in a physical sense it remains a sound, but not for human perception. try now to imagine an extremely slow 'sound' where the fundamental has a period of 60 minutes. the - virtual - overtones would be integer divisions of that period, i.e.: 30', 20', 15', and so on. this is the structural principle of hora harmonica. (albert mayr)

in hora harmonica the author transform sound in rhythm and time become music. all mayr’s work is concerned on the relationship between sound/time/environment and this electronic visionary workrealized in 1983 and only now published - represent one of his most hazardous and conceptually valid expressions.

ora
ag01 double cd

a meditation on silence, ecstatic and radical hearing of a soul who catch the real essence of sound and frees his creativity without a doubt. the result of a deep inner search, involved and involving.  the journey of a non-compromised artist that choose the hardest way to reach a definition of his research.

for pernaiachi it’s the overcoming of the “classic” position of the author. here the author call the nature, he settle any compromise with the instrument, with the musical writing. the work use the sounds of nature, of life. itself is nature, and life. unpolluted. and then difficult to perceive, to hear. it’s a work of silence. an open work, that the listener can ‘compose’ with his own actions.

pernaiachi makes silence sacred: it is a silence charged with all silences. it is a flaming silence. (renzo cresti)

limited edition of 500, numbered, copies. cardboard box in 4 full colours. 20 pages booklet. 2 separate sheets with the diagrams of the composition, to be used for the "montage" of the opera. texts by the author and by renzo cresti, in italian and english.
