the men of station 12-inch is the world’s first introduction to the musical monument that is the 13 & god album — the auspicious meeting of minds and bodies that emerged from a german september shared by anticon’s themselves and the notwist. 13 & god’s debut single bleeds warmth and love onto riding melancholia. the plain words of markus acher steal the spotlight, curling themselves around the band’s music, while b-side “soft atlas” showcases some of doseone’s finer neuroses. his poetry calls the earth’s axis into question over a track that pulses with punched-out drums, only to be leveled by subtle guitar pluck and vocal harmony.

exclusive to this release are two sweeping remixes. the icy cold atmospherics of 13 & god’s “into the trees” are reimagined in dub by why?, who hijacks dose’s lyrics and completely resings them in his characteristic drawl. the other remix, “l’atlas flexible / von gradleute,” is hrvatski’s skittering six-minute mashup of “soft atlas” and “men of station.” it’s a gorgeous rebirth that only hints at the genre-defying range found on the upcoming full-length.

things got a little ugly

late summer set of jamz from mr. alias, working here in more of a minimal / psychedelic mode than evident on previous output (new direction?). some tracks have an all-around live-feel all (much guitar and bell work), while others, to my ears, reveal a deep love for mid-80s synth-pop and... perhaps... boards of canada as well. heartfelt bedroom instrumental hip hop goes no deeper...

the eyes closed ep is five beautifully arranged instrumental songs of filtered polyrhythmic percussion, fat chopped drums, droney synths, pretty string samples and some tv and radio overdubs with anti-imperialist / anti-consumer sentiments. each of the five tracks stands alone, a four-minute electronic pocket symphony with movements and themes, while smoothly transitioning into the next. a departure from early sample-heavy, loop-based alias productions, tracks laden with washy keyboards and eerie guitar rely more on alias's multi-instrumental talents. lying somewhere between ambient brian eno and kraftwerk, eyes closed seems akin to boards of canada or early aphex twin while maintaining some of the boom bap of roots hiphop-- at the same time rainy day contemplative and rhythmically menacing.

may 2003 solo full length from mr. nosdam (a take on painter odd nerdrum?), member of clouddead, reaching quiet, etc... no tracklisting, credited on cd back thusly: “all stuff constructed w/found sounds, mpc2000, dr. sample, the trusty 8 track, casio keyboard & a rather short attention span from spring 2000 to spring 2002 at mom’s, 294 & 11th ave. dax pierson played keyboards on track 2. thanks dose & tim for the 880 & G3 use”. doesn’t exactly tell us what need to know... are you a lycanthrope or not?

regardless... odd’s off-world is rife with very short stringed-together vignettes, synth-pop, cruddy 4-bit casio beats, space-rock, various loves. some of his finest work yet.

no more wig for ohio is a meticulously deliberate two-part arrangement of instrumental songs and far found sounds collaged into a maniacal music quilt that somehow retains cohesiveness. Part one (tracks 1-11) listens like a razor-sharp piss-take on the world around the artist-- an orgy of church hymns and infomercials. The record's second half (tracks 12-24), in all its sick-drum sweet-tone eeriness, reveals a bit of nosdam's human desperation with some of the hardest beats he has ever unleashed upon a sound wave's trespasser's ears. Perfect for headphones, grind dancing, and formal get-togethers of all kinds. odd nosdam is also 1/3 of cLOUDDEAD, part of Reaching Quiet and has produced several tracks for sole, sage francis and others.
