yoshio machida is a tokyo based transboundary sound & visual artist. for his 4th cd, he presents his first-ever set of "acoustic" improvisations using steel pans with no electronic processing. steel pan's mystic tone which was born in trinidad and tobago, a country in the southern caribbean sea can be often listened in the latin covered pieces. but this was made from a different perspective. as you could know the process that he changed to use the instrument, gong which was used in his sound collage work based on field-recording to steel pan, the impression of this album is like ambient, minimal music or traditional indian music which he inspired.

the music on this album is unlike fugue, gamelan or tintinnabulation proposed by arvo part. it features over-dubbed minimal improvised phrases that create unique random delay like effects, somewhat reminiscent of wind bell sounds. and there is a piece inspired by the milestone of minimalism, erik satie's vexations, and also a strangely wonderful drone piece created solely from steel pan rolls. like his previous album, the theme of the album is flowers, and the clear sounds of the steel pan are sure to treat you with an ambient, meditative and relaxing listening experience.

what is this cd for?

there are many kinds of music & sound in this world. most of all relaxation cds for babies contain only soft classic music... however, babies must want to listen to cool music more in fact!!

this is a compilation album for such babies. it's the album which interesting and stimulative artists (from dat politics to toshiya tsunoda) participated. lo-fi (cftpa), jumping pop! (dat politics), turntable noise (busratch), electric glitches (ryoichi krokawa), 8 violins' classical (marko ciciliani)... we hope that babies grow healthily with this stimulative album.

tropical electronica?

"infinite flowers" is the 3rd album of yoshio machida, a sound & visual artist, based in tokyo. david toop introduced machida in his book that he started edited / computer music. but in this album, performance of steel pan is featured with his processing system by live electronics (max/msp). the wonderful ecology, beauty and brightness of "flower" which is the theme of this album are expressed more than enough by electronics texture. it's really hybrid, including minimal rendition with mystic sound of steel pan and complicated rhythm by electric-processing. in a unique piece, "!hana mambo!" - means flower mambo - (tr2), humorous robot choir sings with rhythm and creats an exotic atmosphere. electric symphony, namaqua i, ii, iii, iv (tr3-6) means a special place in south african where many kinds of flowers bloom at the same time once in a year. in poppy (tr09), atmosphere of beauty & dangerous aspect (opium) is expressed. as guest musicians, fourcolor (12k, plop) & yasunaga (member of minamo, 12k) played in it.
