audio warfare and crowd control studies. edited by alku.

less-lethal, vol. 1
alku 63. various artists. 5" compact disc. 11 tracks. 16-page booklet. total program length 51:06

a compilation cd about sound-based nonlethal weaponry featuring tracks by carlos giffoni, dave phillips, francisco lópez, gæoudjiparl van den dobbelsteen, justice yeldham, lasse marhaug, mark fell, powerbooks for peace, torturing nurse, weasel walter and zbigniew karkowski.

keywords: less-lethal, nonlethal, torture, warfare, noise, crowd control, psychoacoustics.

less-lethal, vol. 1 is a sarcastic approach to the use of commercially available music in the military context (see waco, noriega, etc.) it includes a 16-page booklet with an essay by german researcher paul paulun about nonlethal force and its historical relationship with sound and music.

the foundations for this project were laid around 1999, with a long period of research into the equally blurry and fascinating fields of nonlethal weapons (also known as less-lethal weapons) and the behavioral sciences. over the course of this time, we found that one of the most interesting aspects of this phenomenon – full of mythology and speculation – was the use of commercially available music in the context of armed conflict, torture and crowd control. particularly the sheer lack of imagination on the part of military experts who resort to the use of pop music as a weapon, by playing it back for painfully long periods of time at very high volumes.

the direct relationship between sound and behavior has been documented outside the military over the centuries, from the musical treatment of mental patients in the ottoman empire to muzak's stimulus progression theory. with this in mind, it was the psyop’s complete lack of research which provided an excellent starting point for a challenging musical exercise. eleven artists were invited to contribute a sound piece that could be used as a weapon in an armed conflict.

the resulting tracks approach the subject matter in radically different ways. amplitude, duration and repetition may indeed constitute key elements of discomfort, but these tracks all go well beyond that. exploring dynamics and frequency range, structure, latent content, or various aspects from the realm of psychoacoustics, these pieces pose a stimulating (and less lethal) alternative to the average weaponized aor.

alku proudly presents:
evol 'punani quatre'
(alku, 61)

about the cd...
right after evol's live performance last march at lovebytes festival in sheffield, joseph gerhardt of semiconductor films came up with a term to describe evol's recent developments in electroacoustic music. two words: "reinforced concrète". over the last few months, the much praised "punani" series has evolved towards some new territory, where the harshness and raw digital fury of the series' early stages is balanced and confronted with a plethora of subtle shapes and gestures, bubbling audio layers and rubber-elastic sound, reminiscent of classic musique concrète, yet reinforced with evol's characteristic blasting approach to audio.

"punani quatre" is the fourth installment of evol's "punani" series, after releases on fals.ch (the unmissable 90 minute long "superpunani"), scarcelight ("punani shell") and mego ("punani potagia", from the album "magia potagia").

"punani quatre" features 2 new compositions ("jabbercocky xii" for bass clarinet and computer, and "punani testarossa" for solo computer) plus 4 remixes of the latter by highly regarded electronic producers: vienna's peter rehberg (aka pita, of mego fame), swiss composer dave phillips (a usual suspect on berlin-based label tochnit aleph), us noise trio cock e.s.p. and the san francisco sampling wizard jon leidecker, aka wobbly.

powerbooks for peacealeph/null” three inch compact disc recordable

alku press release...
nothing short of world peace through abstract digital audio synthesis techniques.

i think we had a kind of communication working among us, a very magical communication. when you live the picture, when you are not acting, there is no dichotomy...no alienation. what you are doing is real. because i think that if you want a picture to change the world, you must first change the actors in the picture. and before doing that, you must change yourself. right? this must be done. with every new picture, i must change myself, i must kill myself, and i must be born. i must kill the actors and they must be born. and then the audiences, the audiences who go to the movies, must be assassinated, killed, destroyed, and they must leave the theatre as new people. that is a good picture....when i direct a film, everybody - myself included - falls into such trances that there is dead silence, because our lives are at stake.” (alexandro jodorowsky)

powerbooks for peace is alex peverett, james brouwer and joe gilmore.

1996 greetings cd
1999 radio 3 cdr set
2001 regards cdr ep

jon leidecker nació el 1 de abril de 1970, reside en un apartamento en san francisco y a veces sale.

alku, 100% non-professionals professionals.

...

in nov. 12 at art rattan, an oakland performance space, a one-man band called wobbly fidgeted behind a multitrack digital workstation, churning out a sonic stew comprised predominantly of samples culled from local hip-hop station wild 94.9. he generated a ludicrous chorus of rappers chanting "yo"; throughout the set, hundreds of semirecognizable urban pop shards were juxtaposed, often bizarrely. the performance, titled wild why, was both amusingly surreal and jarring, an engaging combination of tongue-in-cheek whimsy, dadaist collage, and social commentary.

jon leidecker, aka wobbly, estimates he works on the over the edge radio show seven or eight times a year; he's also collaborated with local artists like big city orchestra or the chopping channel. his current wild why project came about in part because his tape player broke, forcing him to listen to the radio. leidecker soon realized the sound beds of popular hip-hop tracks were ripe fodder for plunder. "by taking the amazing sound worlds they're coming up with in each of these three-minute songs and isolating them, chopping them up, and freeing them from the strict tempo, and also by detourn-ing the lyrical content so that it doesn't make sense anymore, you can hear commercial rap as experimental music a little more readily than you can in its pop shape," he explains.

though leidecker hopes to release the wild why project on cd soon, and plans to include a credit list of artists sampled, he doesn't intend to pay out any royalties to those same artists. "when we get into money, technically, with over 300 artists on a single recording, who all appear in a matter of seconds on a record that sells maybe one or two thousand copies, there's not going to be any money for them," he says. "there's not going to be any money for me, even."

and leidecker argues he has the right as an artist to assemble a collage of existing material. "i simply do not buy this shtick about how the artists have the right to maintain total control over the use of their work," he says. "once you put your creativity on the table, you'd better be ready for a creative response. and it's only very recently that you've started actually hearing lawyers claim that the artists have the moral right to retain total control over the way that their work is used." musicians who use scavenged audio are, in fact, waiting for the precedent-setting other shoe to drop: while federal copyright law dictates general guidelines for "fair use," there are no hard-and-fast rules regarding the artistic reuse of existing audio. if anything, the rules are dictated by the market: the more money potentially involved, the more likely it is that somebody will unleash the lawyers.

‘when the two have run each other through, the path to your destiny will open’(excerpt from ‘resident evil’ for nintendo game cube, 2002).

yops!
this is anna and roc from barcelona.
we reach you cause we'd like to invite you to take part in one of our nextalku projects.

alku's new compilation is called "x + y = xy".
it is a different approach to collaborations/splits, based on the idea of "blind dates".
we arrange you a "blind date" with another artist. kind of a "blind split".
you must send us a piece of exactly 2 minutes, and so has the other invited person (your couple).
we get your piece and his piece (exactly same lenght). then we overlap both.
x (your piece) + y (the other guy piece) = xy (resulting track on the cd)
please send your track in a cd.

the tracks we have got so far are just amazing and the ones we have tried to overlap work fucking brilliantly. the blind date thingee works top.

hope you enjoy the project as much as we do.
please reply as fast as possible
thanx a lot
