hrvatski / sightingsdiv/orce series 3” seven inch single record

  • hrvatski - une drôle de journée
  • sightings - back to back
click the play button to hear an excerpt of "une drôle de journée"
oo-kah!... here’s the third in the fabulously intense ache-label div/orce split 7” series, this time by penultimate nyc-area/contemporary-era free-crush outfit sightings and... yours truly.

sightings side is so fucking brutal & hazy that i don’t feel i need to go into any real detail (trust me on this one, ok? have you heard their records? my god...) but i will say that this is now probably my single favorite track of theirs due to the profoundly excellent drumming, wasted fidelity, and general damage overall. perfect, in its own grand way...

my side (incidentally... the first non-remix hrvatski track to be released in over 2 and a half years... has it really been that long? damn, i’ve got to get cracking...) is a veritable “young person’s guide to hrvatski”, going in and out of like 37 different bits in just over 5 minutes (much like the track by french prog-demons heldon whose title i ganked here.) using some zonked record crackle, an argeiphontes lyre-destroyed soundfile incorporating the entire contents of my ca. 1998 sound library, doom metal guitars over some very intricate phased break-chop, a dense cutup of jim knox’s green hammond organ with tons of different breaks and serge modular synth blat overlaid, a beautiful recording of a chord organ drone from macao’s place in glasgow in 2002, vst-grunked melodica yammer from 1999 with fully rectified apache, finally landing in a big old mess of 4-part 200bpm gabber harmonies that quickly descend into a bit wherein i’m backwards crab-scratching an original copy of the winstons’ “amen brother” 7” ($$$) over samples of my own lush japanese healing bell chiming before imploding into the... explosion of a whale by dynamite on a beach near florence, oregon on november 12th, 1970 (now... if that doesn’t sound like the best way to spend five minutes of your life then i don’t think i even know you really.)

one-time pressing of some ungodly low number, get it while it’s hot (i’m sensing serious summer-jam top-down applications here folks, especially if your drive to the beach takes < 9 minutes and you happen to have a vinyl killer in your car.)

my cat hates this music. he ran under the bed when i put it on. my cat is an idiot. he doesn’t know anything. i tried to make him appreciate the nuances of this cranky, situationist piece of music, the album as a thudding detournement of negation politics and absurdist subversion; the intricacies of sightings’ repetitive, rumbling drone; or the tapestry of skittery elastic percussion woven by hrvatski; the resolute denial of any set of society’s confines that the record achieves; but he just looked at me, rolled on to his back and said innocently, “mrrrow?” what a pussy. “i thought you were punk”, i sneered. this is the language of greil marcus’ negation, or as he would say “a breach in the pop milieu; in the screen of cultural assumptions governing what one expected to hear and how one expected to respond”. this is why this record is another piece of the puzzle in the div/orce series.

matmos / die monitr batssdiv/orce series 2” seven inch single record

  • matmos - and on and on
  • die monitr batss - blackout cross
splitsville, second in the series, between nyc ca. 1978-hearted, olympia, wa ca. 2003-based dim-mak wonder droogs die monitr batss and matadors martin and drew matmos. both sides caress various divines... i wholeheartedly stand behind the concept and execution of this series of record-objects, this one only strengthens the bond...
ache press release...
the second chapter of the div/orce series unfolds to reveal two tracks so well-made for each other, it's hard to believe it wasn't intentional. both songs push threw themselves, relying on pillars of rhythmic energy, and both seem to collapse on  themselves midway, one from intense digital editing, the other from naive, fee-jazz influenced tom foolery.

the parallels between these artists, however buried or abstract they may be, are certainly present. there is a similar creative energy among them both, made present by the seemingly endless possibilities of potential directions either of these songs could travel in. both seem to be bound by no specific code, leaving them free to wander and explore without any creative restrictions.

from the matmos site: “as playlists and groovier emporiums have already announced, there's a new matmos recording out and about, and it finds us snuggled up with the pride of olympia, washington, die monitr batss. we first caught their heavy no wave skronk at a show at the eagle with da hawnay troof and erase errata, so when ache records proposed a split 7" for their divorce series, we were way up for it. as divorces go, the results sound surprisingly cozy; for our contribution we have decided to cover/deconstruct the song "on and on", which was written by curtis mayfield and originally performed by gladys knight & the pips. our rendition features mark lightcap on guitar and bass and drums by steve goodfriend. drew chopped it up, martin enforced structural adjustments, and kit clayton mastered the results. we encourage you to stuff stockings, decorate the hanukkah bush, or reinforce your devout atheism with vinyl evidence of our new blue eyed soul direction.”

here’s the debut of the trio of zach hill (hella, holy smokes, the advantage (who, btw, are easily the best of the current crop of third-gen nintendo cover bands, hands-down), etc...), christopher willits, and miguel “kid606” depedro... is this record greater than the sum of its parts? not exactly, perhaps it’s exactly the sum of its parts. which isn’t to say it’s a failure or anything, just not the sound of three souls working towards spritual unity (more like they’re battling each other)... but then again it’s not like that’s what you were expecting... (these guys aren’t exactly the parker-guy-lytton trio of free improvisation)...

if i have my anecdotes straight, i vaguely remember miguel mentioning that all three were gazing deep on some especially radiant light sensitive diodes during the session(s), with christopher willits on guitar and what-not, zach on drums and what-is, and miguel on casio and maybe (from the sound of things) a little computer what-what.

personally, i’m into the shambolic ramble-on factor. plus it’s good to hear miguel branch out into non dancefloor missives and he’s certainly got a knack for them (my favorite work of him being the “ps i love you” record). plus christopher excretes pure gold around these parts and zach’s probably one of my favorite drummers around (it’s almost as if they got together solely for my own amusement). a no-brainer...

flössin is:
christopher willits (12k, spekk)
miguel “kid606” depedro (tigerbeat6, ipecac)
zach hill (hella, the advantage, the holy smokes)

“lead singer reminds me of the moments when i'm climbing the staircase to my bands practice space and i am able to hear 4 bands practicing at once, all at matching volumes. it's a documentation of the rare times when somehow, the cacophony that echoes threw the staircase seems to be mildly orchestrated - a snare hit in one room triggers a wash of noise in another, or 2 guitars feedback in key with each other. but the sounds on flössin's debut full length are not accidental, nor are they created by 18 people all playing shitty alternative rock - they are created by 3 stunning improv musicians, christopher willits, zach hill (hella), and miguel depedro (kid606), who play off echother like some uber modern jazz trio. the combined history and previous efforts of these three artists becomes the soil from which new, prickly forms emerge. as the direct opponent to "cold and calculated", lead singer is "warm and spontaneous"; a sonic wash of masterful free-drumming, guitar manipulation, and digital stylings which creates a warmth to bathe in.”
