this and above/below - a king’s ransom in glorious lathe-cut records, prepared by the “aa records” team of nate “hatred” young and alivia zivich.

to answer most/all of your questions:

1). lathe-cut records are cut, one at a time, in the same fashion that “mothers” are cut for lp pressings; instead of using a westrex/neumann machine/stylus with a stereo head and high-grade acetate, these are cut using an antiquated unit such as the 1950s “rek-o-cut” with a mono head onto thick (1/4” !!) plastic 7” squares (!!!), with either some sort of full-color print embedded into the plastic (ala a “picture disc) or a magnificentlly psychedelic paint-swirl (i assume these were done as the lathe spun...)

2). i’ve played through all of them on a turntable of moderate quality, and other than a few hiccups they all played from beginning to end w/o any serious hitches (although switching your ballast to a heavier setting is recommended.) i’m actually surprised with the quality when compared to “king records worldwide” (i.e. every lathe cut record from new zealand) product; depending on the source-material a few of them sound quite lively... the sound samples on this site were taken from my own turntable/playback equipment (so you know how they actually sound ...)

3). due to the preparation/nature of lathe-cut records, no two are alike. in the same way that no two mix-tapes are alike. some even have false-starts !!!

4). these are all artist/band-authorized editions, limited to as many copies as nate and alivia have managed to produce. i don’t know how many of each were made. don’t ask...

bearing all of that in mind; these are fantastically unique record-objects, just about as unique as one could hope. yes, they are a bit on the pricey side, especially for what are essentially one-sided 7” records; but given the amount of time taken to manufacture each individual record... well... it doesn’t seem all that bad.

to put it bluntly; unless you’re already a huge fan of any of these artists; don’t bother.
otherwise; you need them. all of them ...

custom cut lathes, part one of a collaboration between jackie stewart and aa records (nate young & alivia zivich).

i have always admired jackie's turntable manipulation. immediately after meeting and jamming with smegma i thought it would be great to cut jackie some records for her turntable. i was just starting out cutting lathes and experimenting with different materials. i gave her a red, ruff-cut on a ice cream lid (they all smelled like different flavors of ice cream.) soon after i saw her perform with the lathe. i was blown away seeing her work her magic on the ice cream disk, amazing jamm!

jackie recently asked me to re-groove that original lathe. i told her of course and if she had any other tracks she'd like me to cut to send them over. we got to talking and this idea for a collaboration emerged. the collaboration is on going. the idea is after we cut the custom lathes for jackie she will send back a recording made with them. we will then recut, remix and cutup the music that is exchanged, it can go on and on back and forth. aa records will release the rawest material that is unleashed during this ongoing slaughter festival on double 7" lathes, cassettes and cdrs. -nathan young
