marcus schmickler’s recent release on a-musik is yet another proof of his stylistic diversity. his music defies all attempts at categorization. schmickler appears to be well versed in all musical genres, having reached a level of perfection which seems almost unique in these times. sui generis, as they say.

only a short while after his impressive duo improvisation with john tilbury (variety) and with a new pluramon album due for release, schmickler will once again convince critics and audiences. at the same time, this release reveals yet another aspect of his manifold musical activities – composing for instrumental ensembles and choirs. “demos” is schmickler’s most ambitious work to date. premiered in march 2004 in cologne, the piece went on a triumphal trip through half of europe. among other places, it has been performed at cracow and the renowned center for contemporary arts (cca) in glasgow, where it was performed in the course of a three day festival organized especially for schmickler.

”demos” – which can be heard on this release in an arrangement for choir, chamber ensemble and electronic sounds – deals with nietzsche’s thoughts expressed in his “zarathustra” on the extent with which language could be dealt with (or addressed) as music. the piece does so on the basis of fragments from the text. the basis for (t)his philosophy nietzsche perceived in the expression of the choirs in ancient tragedy. marcus schmickler transcends the classic mythic emblems of ancient greek choirs such as recitative and declamation by employing contemporary means. in the overwhelming power of the choir, “demos” – the greek term for “community” and commonly used for “people” – lets one sense the energy, which serves as a metaphor for a people and their ability to strongly voice their desires, their requests and their demands. moreover, schmickler’s abstract and strepitous electronic sounds blend in an illustrative way with the text and the imagination of events portrayed in the dramatic performances of the choir. thus they become projections of the clamour of an abstract mass. “demos” is demanding, disturbing and suggestive in its idiosyncratic blend of sounds. this is a music which passes on the spirit of such luminaries as the late györgy ligeti (“requiem”), jani christou or iannis xenakis (“medea"), but which in schmickler’s contemporary attitude gains a wholly different significance.

complementing the album are two excerpts of schmickler’s musical arrangements for theatre productions. all in all, this is an album which resurrects traditions as well as pursues the hitherto unheard in a unique way. in addition to that, it examines in how far constructivist and post-dramatic approaches can today inspire classic forms with new structures though the amalgamation of text, music and performative elements without betraying the qualities of the originals. joachim ody

felixs’ most recent full-length album... in my mind his best! contains the lionel ritchie cover “hello” (which kind of has to be heard to be believed...), his hit “hit me provider”, a few totally killer gameboy freakouts (listen to the sound-sample), the pre-requisite organ rhythm-box jams (always amazing), and so on...

it’s hard to justify my fascination with felix; there’s much kitsch at work (not an element i normally treasure) but at the same time he’s so living in his own private universe (yuri gagarin is the president and the moon is made of cheese...) that you have to love him on some level... if not several.

if you’ve ever wondered what music i put on at parties, it’s pretty much this every time... no one else is making such rampantly eclectic electronic music (these days at least) and getting away with it... all hail felix.

old school? new school? in reality, both are just a question of orchestral and sound preference. the freespirit, in this case, decides for no school: for only from the fragments of no (ie. no wave in reference to no new york) new forms can originate. and, at best, no would also imply idiosyncratic wanking and autodidactic self-empowerment.

as 11-year-old pre-teen, this gyro gearloose of pataphysical sound felix kubin not only sought for self-satisfaction with his legendary child-band „die egozentrischen 2“ but also instigated the first folk synthesizer against its own instruction manual (of course in accordance with the „zeitgeist“ at that time). the result was an elevated monstrosity from a merciless rage-experiment with frightening precociousness. all at the peak of the neue deutsche welle...

thank god that today, more than two decades later, there is no stopping this former „wunderkind“! admittedly, the mischievous demolition of pop structures, which was once attributed to a juvenile berserkerdom, has since then evolved into a more conscious dada-hooliganism. or - to put it simple with the metaphor of the album title - it turned into the „mothers of destruction“ (in polish: matki wandalki = vandalizing mothers).

the fact that the anaemic ghost of deconstruction doesn’t spoil the 13 tracks on this cd must have to do with felix’ abstruse humor. like his love of sounds, the hum of kubin’s cosmos is powerfully distinct. it reminds (not only) me of tschechoslovakian animation films and – even further back – of the electro-acoustic sound experiments of the fifties avant-garde long before their development into pop.

matki wandalki unites several pairs of aesthetic contradictions. abstract darmstadt goes pop. the result is „witty“ musique concrete and something that i can only interpret as „program-music“ without a narrative „program“.

that by such cheerful science he would also come out with a real hit for the possibleweb-nerds-casting-show (hit me provider) is no surprise for me. on the conrtrary, it’s more than ever pleasing. with it felix should finally be making the well deserved dough...as for me, i just can’t leave him out of pop...no school? better this: own school! class kubin!

mit wittgenstein in krisuvík - zweiundzwanzig elfenlieder für island" (with wittgenstein in krisuvík - twenty-two elf songs for iceland), the solo cd by wolfgang müller, is released on a-musik, cologne. wolfgang müller, author, artist and the head of the legendary cult band "die tödliche doris", lives in berlin (in the kreuzberg district) and in reykjavík. he is the president of the walther von goethe foundation reykjavík. "in order to create an agreeable environment, where elves would feel comfortable, i must remain equally open to the musical, the non-musical and extra-musical," says wolfgang müller. and so, various musical styles, directions and currents are found running through on on his new cd, "mit wittgenstein in krisuvík". elves and dwarves are behind all of those, inaudible and yet perceptible - some friendly, the others wrathful; sometimes merry, serious at other times.

"recordings from 1981-1985. in the beginning of the 80ies a vivid scene of children bands came to existence in hamburgs suburb bergedorf. the groups had names like "rekronstruirtes relativpronomen”, “architektonisch sehenswertes bauwerk”, “universalanschluss” and “die egozentrischen 2”. behind the two latter ones the nowadays nearly famous sci-fi pop impresario felix kubin, his brother max and a friend called stefan mohr were agitating.

zick-zack boss alfred hilsberg supported them and organized gigs in clubs and avantgarde furniture galleries like markthalle and moebel perdú. some highlights of their work are now released by a-musik and skipp with different track selections on lp and cd."

each track deserves a couple of brief explanations. first of all: as no good sequencers or computers were applied. most sounds and melodies were played by hand. computers made to produce high-wuality music, such as the “fairlight” aroun 1983, were unaffordable. namely a large percentage of people, considered at the time as un-cool, sat in front of cheap monitors of whatever kind on a daily basis for weeks, to mess around with rudimentary programming language by the name of basic on index cards. but that had nothing to do with music. we loved the synthetic for its own purpose, as an aesthetic phenomene in time. as a replica of a world overwhelmed by technology. we made reference to plastic, industry, elevators, television, electronics, and out-of-function music.

the set for the new production of the ballet der krieger (graz opera house, studiobühne) is on a serial image concept. projected image panels act as a stage set that forms a subtle grid background for the one-man performance (choreography: jörg schlick). the symphony diese wildnis hat kultur (1982) forms the musical base of the dance performance.

one instrument is reserved for each of the four movements:
jörg schlick: violin, flutes, violoncello and electric guitar
andi beit: synthesizer.

'minimalist form was combined with expressionist social comment' wrote jack anderson (new york times, 21.05.1985) in his critique of the première. this reference to the field of tension between the minimalist vocabulary of forms or object gesture (performers) and the expressive portrayal of social conditions hits on a fundamental aspect of schlick's work. the symphonic composition accompanies the performance like a 'synthetic heartbeat' that corresponds to the intensity of beethoven's 'eroica' in terms of its tonal character. the 'deflection of the needle', the electronic display of tonal intensity and pitch of the classical symphony, acted as the score for jörg schlick.

"f.x. randomiz is one of those you might have met musically but you won't be sure when. in 1992 there was the infamous slow cd with jan st. werner (now mouse on mars) on that tiny gefriem label. the wire (issue 5/97) wrote: 'slow...an unsung electronic masterpiece, an outstanding pre-oval example of capsized sampling virtuosity.' both musicians appear as dü on the highly appreciated mille plateaux compilation in memoriam gilles deleuze. some may remember the my bloody valentine-inspired 7" by four square logos (randomiz/suchy/werner). now it's time that his solo-album goflex will show his talents to the wide public. recent releases were remixes for microstoria's reprovisers cd and the schlammpeitziger 10" (a-musik) as well as the duoproject holosud (12" on a-musik). goflex is a state of the art example of software-engineering of sound transformation and manipulation. a groovy, sometimes melodic album but radical treated sampled and synthesized sounds will catch your attention. possibly it will satisfy groovers and headphone-listeners at once. a record for consumers and producers."

much like early mouse on mars, this sounds like all of the promise of the “kosmische” end of krautrock (conrad schnitzler, kluster, etc...) filtered through the sensibilities/production of the techno-age. to my ears this hasn’t aged a day in over 10 years...
