my cat is an alien / keiji haino: 'cosmic debris vol. iii'
cd

cd re-issue of the third installment in the "cosmic debris" split art-lp series set up by maurizio and roberto opalio, aka my cat is an alien, on their own opax records. the vol.iii sees the two space brothers from torino, italy, alongside japanese cult musician and dark shaman keiji haino. imagine a cosmic bomb exploding in your brain, and you'll have an approximate idea of this collaborative release. so, dear new-weird-america's hippy, you'd better keep your ass away from this total blast!.. no freak-folk here. instead, with these two long tracks recorded during live performances in their hometowns, respectively torino and tokyo, mciaa and haino conspired to offer you the two most totally-uncompromising music, the best way to warm up your cold winter days: what do you want more?

haino's track, entitled "whither goes it?/ that which canst not but be described/ as my prayer,/ nowhere held in common,/ lunatic, unknowable..." (yes, it's a poem!), is one of the highlights of his so long career, and mciaa's track "everything crashes like cosmic debris" is one of the brothers' most ass-kicking for sure... still ask for more? ok, read the note and play this record at loudest volume, 'till your stereo calls for mercy. are you satisfied, now? oh yes, we think so... 'dark' + 'alien' are so cool together!

black magic disco (mciaa and jackie-o motherfucker) : 's/t'
2 lp set (in luxurious gatefold sleeve, incl. poster)

black magic disco is the new all-star band featuring tom greenwood (jackie-o motherfucker), maurizio & roberto opalio (my cat is an alien) and ramona ponzini (painting petals on planet ghost, praxinoscope). the project was born out of an idea from tom greenwood, founder leader of the avant-folk-blues ensemble jackie-o motherfucker, who invited maurizio and roberto opalio, aka the italian improv duo my cat is an alien (mciaa), and their close collaborator ramona ponzini (also involved with the two brothers in the projects named painting petals on planet ghost and praxinoscope, as well as in the new collaboration with z'ev) to perform with him for two months of touring throughout all europe in may/ june 2005. as one can imagine, the result was killer.

the music which came out of the live performances was totally explosive, combining ramona's japanese vocals & hypnotic chimes with greenwood's psych-blues guitar attitude & wild turntablism, over mciaa's alien cosmic flux of electric guitars, space toys & percussions, creating a still unheard mixture of sounds unifying archaic & post-modern, western & eastern, sky & earth. this debut cd represents a unique chance to experience almost 80 minutes of that pure and magic live action, divided in four long tracks taken from the original live recordings. black magic disco's logo comes from the pencil of roberto opalio; the gatefold jacket cd artwork, curated by mciaa contains some band photos taken during the live performances included in the record.

my cat is an alien / steve roden : 'cosmic debris vol. ii'
cd

cd re-issue of the second installment in the "cosmic debris" split art-lp series set up by maurizio and roberto opalio, aka my cat is an alien, on their own opax records. the vol.ii sees the two space brothers from torino, italy, alongside californian visual and sound artist steve roden. what makes this collaborative release so peculiar is the natural interactive exchange occurred between the artists, and that came out from the concept behind the experience itself.

roden's contribution thus represents the unique experience of hearing him literally 'playing' guitar chords. his first track, "e-bows and rainbows", developes through the minimal and reiterated sound architecture of roden's so-called 'possible landscapes', where singular source materials such as objects and field recordings are abstracted through electronic processes to generate new audio spaces, characterizing the artist's aesthetic in sound works; the following "my dog is a yufo" is so far a pretty unheard aspect of roden's ability to shape a fascinating intimate piece only with an old electric guitar and his own fingers, and it also demonstrates how a true artist can re-create his own personal universe, no matter what kind of source utilized.

on their side, mciaa deliver another piece of 'cosmic debris', centered on multilayered echoes of voice, toy piano, space drones raising from a distant horizon, and their own physical gestures performed during the recording, which reproduce themselves through the air, re-play and give birth to echoes of real time that overcomes its own essence, becoming field recording itself, mirror and spectre of its immutability. their track entitled "everything waves like cosmic debris" also features ramona ponzini's japanese bells contribution.

the golden oaks (north sea + hush arbors): 'autumn testament'
cd

comprised of brad rose (the north sea) and keith wood (hush arbors), the golden oaks features road show magicians springing forth candles from wooded sanctuaries. composed via the postal system, autumn testament is a hymn to the season of red, gold, and orange. a canopy of leaves shelters the proceedings from the fog that threatens to obscure these sounds. this is a glorious combination of organic grace, blessed by the forests of past centuries and those still in their infant stages. the trees will put tears in your eyes!

cd re-issue of the first instalment in the new "cosmic debris" split art-lp series set up by maurizio and roberto opalio, aka my cat is an alien. this volume i sees the two space brothers from torino, italy, alongside lee ranaldo (sonic youth) and his all-star ensemble text of light* (here featuring alan licht, dj olive, ulrich krieger and tim barnes).

their track "033103 paris" has been recorded live at centre georges pompidou in 2003 and mixed in dual mono by ranaldo & licht at nyc echo canyon studio. mciaa's piece entitled "everything falls like cosmic debris" is a conceptual ouverture to the whole series, performed in april 2006 at their secret recording space called alien zone, located up the italian western alps.

jennifer gentle: 'a new astronomy'
cd digipack

this album is dedicated to giovanni paneroni, amateur astronomer and misunderstood genius. he was born in 1871 and made a living out of peddling sweets and ice-creams around northern italy's towns and villages. in his free time, he developed his own, revolutionary astronomical theories: the earth is flat, surrounded on every corner by perennial glaciers; the sun is nothing more than a small silver ball with a 2 meter diameter and a weight of approximately 14 kilos; copernicus was wrong: the entire official astronomical science is just a bunch of lies; planets don't move, stars are just little fires hung in the sky, the universe doesn't exist. he also invented a new solar compass based on his extraordinaries discoveries.

in his unstoppable attempts to promote the truth, paneroni tried everything and suffered countless humiliations: he stalked professors, was arrested and became a well known character in many italian universities. after some years spent in a mental institution, he died in 1950. thousands of people from all over the country attended his funeral.

"a new astronomy" is probably the most eccentric and out-there jg release to date. recorded mostly in marco fasolo's bedroom on a 4-track cassette machine, the album has been conceived as the imaginary soundtrack for some of their most bizarre, vivid dreams - obviously interspersed by the occasional nightmare. it's made by grainy, hallucinated musical scores trying to depict the beautiful, the scary, the annoying and the simply absurd inhabiting dreams. it runs the gamut from ghostly ambient drones to brain-damaged acoustic sketches, covering everything in between - furious guitar freak-outs and a hommage to british 60's producer joe meek included.

(note: this is the official release of the ultra rare cd-r released by sub pop in 2005 in a 100 copies limited edition).

fabio orsi & gianluca becuzzi: 'muddy speaking ghosts through my machines'
cd digsleeve

muddy speaking ghosts through my machines' is the brand new album released together by fabio orsi and gianluca becuzzi. this album will be certainly followed by other cooperations, considering the big friendly artistic sodality between them. fabio e gianluca are a strange duo, considering the big differences of their artistic back-ground.

fabio orsi is a young and unexpected talent. after his first album, "osci" (lp, smallvoices 2005), produced by gianluca becuzzi, he got a lot of positive feedbacks, worldwide, by the most important international media, confirmed by his second official release "for alan lomax" (cd, a silent place 2006) splitted with cosmical italian duo my cat is an alien.

gianluca becuzzi is a very well known character of the italian experimental scene since from the 80s, under many different alias. recently known as kinetix, gianluca latest release is the very well appreciated "memory makes noise" (cd, smallvoices 2006) a great electroacoustic pearl.

the unexpected uncounter between different forces, experiences and visions of this two artists is prefectly melted in this album: strong and tied, an imaginary place where folkway and research, past and present, distance and closeness, mud and clouds, ghosts and machines meets. shreds of ballads, guitars and old keyboards floating on the vibrant surface of this faery river and disappear, towed off by drones and rumors, pouring between distant voices and centenary blues songs from the alan lomax archive.

raptur and sweet lostness: this is the main sensation. it could be listed as avant-folk, or experimental-blues, ambient- roots or contemporary aesthetics and aching nostalgia...

christian marclay & okkyung lee / my cat is an alien: 'from the earth to the spheres vol.6'
cd digisleeve

this is the re-release of the split art-lp (opax records - special space art ltd ed of 100/ original 31x31 cm painting on wooden support by roberto opalio as cover). last release in the "from the earth to the spheres" split series set up by maurizio and roberto opalio aka my cat is an alien on their own opax records imprint, sees the italian cosmic duo splitting the media with well-known audio visual artist, performer and turntable-art innovator christian marclay together with cello improviser okkyung lee, ubiquitous figure of downtown ny avant-garde scene.

their track "rubbings" is the result of a live performance recorded at tonic nyc in december 2003. christian marclay's trademarked technique of mixing several ranges of lps on his multiple turntables, manipulating, fragmenting and altering the phonograph records' sonic nature in accordance with his "theater of found sound" esthetics meets the uncompromising and passionate playing of korean-born performer lee, whose powerful cello's stabs interact with marclay's waves of screaming sounds creating a unique, stunning scenario.

my cat is an alien's piece "beyond the limits of the stars/ beyond the limits of the grooves" was recorded in 2003 at their space room studio in torino, and has been kept safely in their archive 'till september 2005, when it's been completely remixed and edited appositely for this release. one of their heaviest conceptions to date, the piece is built on electric guitars' strings moaning onto walls of space drones and electronics like ectoplasmic presences emerging from the brillliance of the void. the initial minimal and claustrophobic guitar chords become more and more an ocean of howling moduled feedbacks combined with fragmented and distorted real-time inserts of post-romantic classical music from old 78rpm shellac records, sounding like radio frequencies transmitted via ether from the furthest reaches of the cosmos.

as the title suggests, mciaa's need of a non-finite "space music & art" aesthetics research has led them to etch a ghost track (instead of the final lock-groove you can find on the original vinyl) to un-seal the sounds from their actual support; a purpose expressed throughout the whole "from the earth to the spheres" series' conception.

praxinoscope 's/t'
lp picture disc

praxinoscope is a new project which sees the duo roberto opalio (one-half of my cat is an alien) and ramona ponzini (close collaborator of the italian space-brothers).

while in the debut album as painting petals on planet ghost (out in early september 2005 on time-lag records) ramona will focus on her japanese vocals alongside both brothers' acoustic tunes, here she plays little japanese percussions and wind chimes, creating a resonant texture over roberto's alien wordless vocals and space electronics.

the material comes from a whole session recorded in a mysterious location of the western alps, directly transferred to cd using neither overdubs nor outtakes, practice which the opalio bros have made us addicted to.

for the entire length of its 40 minutes, the piece will stifle you the breath because of its so pure essence and intimate mood; a mystic, suffocated chant reminding the silence of ancient rituals, the ultimate exorcism to avert the infinite pain.

fear falls burning 'we slowly lift ourselves from dust'
10" picture disc

this is a set of 28 minutes of new music by fear falls burning for the italian a silent place label. per side fear falls burning explores, as the title would suggest, the darker and nihilistic regions of his drone music. minimal repetitive motives which slowly evolve and expand over the 14 minutes per side into 2 unsettling harmonies of minor and solitude.

all performed live and recorded directly onto hard disc, there's no editing involved in order to maintain the spontaneous interaction of the guitar with its effects and vice versa. the man behind fear falls burning is just the orchestrator while the guitar speaks the language.

aidan baker: 'the sea swells a bit…'
cd

a silent place proudly presents the new aidan baker cd album! aidan baker is one of the most important emergent artist of the last years...! probably this is the most important "musical" aidan baker release..., in fact here the sound is comparable to the best (obscure) psychedelic post-rock releases including great droning, hypnotic and honeiric atmospheres.

spontaneously composed by aidan, who plays guitar (electric & acoustic), bass, tapeloops, drum machine and percussion in his droning 'fashion soup'. in this album aidan uses (as usual) his guitar but also other instruments and tools like tapeloops and sampled dialogue. the result is the three long and beautiful tracks that constructs this album. 44 minutes of hypnotic ambient drone textures in a deep psychedelic & post-rock attitude.

his guitar treatments and amazing looping work get more and more marvellous, as the droning increasing percussions take the listener to a peaceful state of mind. the sound rises all around as the stream floods to the seaside, giving refuge to emotions through numbing clouds of murmuring electric voices. aidan's performances high standards and his instantly recognizable style are here well confirmed, adding to the excellent level of his discography!

tom carter & vanessa arn: 'what is here for?'
lp

limited edition of 515 copies. contains two long and deep duo cuts of univibe-era lap steel/ electronic tone generator improvisation, one side recorded live and stamped w/ the indelible mark (ie, the #15 bus rumbling by) of bullbabe studios, austin tx (the odor of sweat, lone star, and barbeque is palpable). the sounds: monolithic serenity infused with a deep breath from the void, as peaceful and violent as a mountain range. a shame that this configuration is so underrepresented in the discography, as the mesh of t&v's playing is so instantly seismic...

tom carter is best known for his work with charalambides, which he co-founded with longtime creative partner christina carter in 1991. since 2002, carter has also undertaken solo work and collaborations. his 2003 solo tour, centered around the seminal brattleboro freefolk festival, featured unaccompanied solo shows and musical excursions (on stage and tape) with bardo pond, thurston moore, dredd foole, the mvee medicine show, ian nagoski, tower recordings, and double leopards, among others.

vanessa arn became a member of boston/california/texas group primordial undermind soon after tom's brief tenure in the group. the potential for mountainous difference tones between the lap steel and the triwave tone generator (a custom built synthesizer) was immediately apparent to all parties, and tom suggested a collaboration (which was greatly assisted by the fact that tom and vanessa were at the time next door neighbors). a sole performance and a handful of recordings ensued and the results are here for your perusal.

jennifer gentle: 'sacramento session'
lp gatefold sleeve

portland/oregon-sacramento/california: 580 miles. one of the longest trip for the first jennifer gentle north american tour. they play at the academy of fools, a sort of garage converted as an art gallery: a big open space, low ceiling, completely empty, walls without anything, no stage, no audio system, just a microphone. it seams the beginning of a bad night, on the contrary due to the wonderful view and the beautiful californian sun, or just for themselves and their fans, the jennifer gentle decided to play anyway; not their usual repertory to much noisy but just an improvisation made by their instinct. the result was a hypno jam session, relaxed, honeiric.

the day after jennifer gentle play at the davis kdvs radio, where they propose and records the same jam of the previous night, which became the “sacramento session”. back to home, working on marco’s improvisations with different sounds, manipulated, mixed and remixed, they found the specular image from a distorted mirror of the “sacramento session”: “5 of 3” is the perfect b side, the balance and overturn of that californian night. we would like also to remark you that "sacramento session / 5 of 3" is not the jennifer gentle new studio album, but is instead a combo of a jam session together with a studio manipulation.

packaging in a de-luxe and elegant fold-out cover. the vinyl is coloured as solid red.
