spring 2007: c. spencer yeh / burning star core.

what was once a passing fancy is now something of an obsession; i need to hear every speck of music that comes out of c. spencer yeh's cincinatti lair. he's been on something of a roll on the prolificacy front over the last few months, which has made keeping up with his activity something of a full-time job...

below is a list of everything i've got at the moment featuring/by spencer. for the un-initiated, i wholeheartedly recommend the ultra eczema lp "everyday world of bodies" and/or the recent "blood lightning 2007" disc on no-fun as launch-off points; both feature spencer's unique blend of deconstructed near-pop music bathed in a thick stew of anti-music gestures & misted electronics. for those seeking something a bit more visceral, go for the "solo violin 1-10" lp on tone filth and/or either of the flaherty/corsano/yeh titles on important. also, the hototogisu / burning star core "volume one" collaborative disc on spencer's own dronedisco label is the closest thing to caveman-krautrock i've heard in a while, and comes highly recommended as well...

october 2006 release; a massive whir of krautrock-inspired doom-drones & psychedelic noise from the hototogisu duo and the full trio lineup of burning star core. a surprisingly varied/dynamic set, encompassing passages that sound not unlike amon düül, closely followed by ones that sound like a lightning bolt bootleg... hell, the last piece even sounds like the lost billy bang/david tudor mind-meld we’ve all been dreaming about...

of the recent invasion of hototo/bxc-related gelt, i’m feeling this one the most... highly recommended.
drone disco press release...
"live in-person" collaborations between hototogisu and the bxc. hototogisu, as you know, are the time-defying duo of matthew bower (skullflower, ramleh, sunroof!, total, etc.) and marcia bassett (double leopards, ghq, zaimph, etc.). for these sessions, burning star core was c. spencer yeh, robert beatty, and trevor tremaine (the latter two being of hair police, eyes and arms of smoke, sick hour, etc.). note that the music on this disc is different material from the heavy blossom companion volume "hg/bxc ii" released earlier this year.

five tracks, totalling approximately fifty minutes. packed into the small horrible room (rip) inside the cedar house (rip) down in lexington ky (still alive), individuals huddled in every corner, painting the room in colored cables, glossy wood and metal boxes. deafness and disorientation was administered through the afternoon on into the night. summoning over two hours of recorded tape, it was decided to cut the baby in half for adoption between two imprints. heavy blossom ferried away the long thick sides of torso, and dronedisco seized the hooves, antlers, and jaw. the disc starts off with an appropriate invocation; from there punches blindly through one stone cloud after another, coughs and gasps from exhaustion, stumbles and lies motionless. the ritual concludes with a moment of naked acoustic/instinctual spasm, then a cut-off of

originally released in a very small quantity on cd-r as merchandise during various us and uk spring tours, the dronedisco half of these sessions has been edited and resequenced for this release in the autumn. the pro-pressed disc comes in a black polycase with black and white inserts and a special randomly-selected 1" button (there are five button variations in all).

tarantula hill, the preeminent east coast usa clubhouse for traveling noise and other obscurant pleasure musics of the early 21st century, was ravaged by fire in march 2006. t hill was also the abode of nautical almanac, a remarkable dada love-sound noise trio consisting of carly ptak, twig harper and max eisenberg. located in baltimore, maryland these fine folks feted the likes of all that is amazing in the underground community of post-free zone music/art/performance. as an irreplaceable venue/hangout it will be completely missed and mytholigized.

lots of cool benefit gigs have happened in honor to tarantula hill since the blaze. ecstatic peace decided to help by throwing together a double cd compilation of artists who had intimate association with the joint.

an amazing array of participation here, all kinds of wolf eyes breakdowns: aaron dilloway, nate young, the graveyards (w/ john olson), the haunting (w/ mike connelly), to live and shave in l.a., leslie keffer, jessica rylan, mark morgan (of sightings), chris corsano and tons more.

musically the cds flow with an astounding dynamic of sound idea exhibiting a scene in glorious rapture to the outer grasp.

important press release...
together chris corsano and paul flaherty have re-written the concept of modern free-jazz with their post-hardcore punk style approach of euphoric togetherness. ferocious, spontaneous, explosive and aggressively lyric they've established their groundbreaking duo with loads of shows and a host of tremendous recordings.

when tales of c. spencer yeh's burning star core project reached corsano/flaherty the duo were eager to see him jam. fortunately, fate brought them together at the destijl/freedom from festival where corsano/flaherty were playing in the dream/aktion unit (with thurston moore) and yeh was there with burning star core. his performance caught the corsano/flaherty duo on fire and yeh's temperature was raised (literally) when he suddenly came down with the flu following his show. fortunately for yeh, flaherty packed him in ice down in the festival hall basement and a solid relationship was forged.

lives were saved. jams ensued. the power trio of flaherty/corsano/yeh was formed.liner notes by john olson aka johnny coors.

the flaherty/corsano/yeh power trio have emerged on album with a dual format/dual release for important. snow blind avalanche finds the flaherty/corsano/yeh in more abstract free dimensions with yeh's presence in the sound even more firmly established. recorded as the snow fell.

first in a series of six ten inch single records reissuing classic burning star core “sides” recorded between 1996 and 2005; some of which were on that double-disc set on cenotaph, a bunch of which are being released here for the first time...

the three pieces on this volume all use a similar sound-set; janked/circuit-bent electronics in pulse/seek/destroy mode, yielding some nice floating electronics puncutated by a regular rhythmic grid & a bit of tape/disc manipulation.

as with just about every emission from spencer’s cincinatti lair these days, this is killer stuff; one of my favorite artists working in contemporary sound...

with this november 2006 “special” issue it’s pretty much official; the sound projector is the best experimental music magazine running, at least from my jilted standpoint...

in this issue mr. pinsent selects a stack of vinyl from his shelf, then sits down and concocts witty expositions on their contents, methods of acquisition, etc... the whole thing has this ritualistic flair but never dips into sheer repetition; there’s always something interesting to say, some revelation to be found.

records reviewed in this issue range from recent noise vinyl way on back to 60s esp-disk originals; not your “keeping up with the new release schedules” coverage here, no sir... ed is as likely to review a rare 1970 french prog lp as he is the new fusetron title.

it’s a joy to read and genuinely funny to boot. if you’ve ever pored the shelves of your local mom & pop record shop for dusty experimental gelt, you’ll be familiar with the thrill of the hunt celebrated within these pages. very highly recommended!
