six organs of admittance rtz dc3832xcd when you think of the way you used to live, the way you degraded the planet. you didn’t know all creatures are equal! today, you look back and see yourself in a different light. to think that six organs was all that held you up to the divine. six little organs of separation. sometimes that’s all it takes. the double-cd epic called rtz (named after the button on a tascam 484 that “returns to zero”) fashions several lesser-known pieces from six organs of admittance’s early years into a massive prismatic arc, colossal and organic like some wonder of the ancient world. how could it be otherwise? even when existing as only one half of a record, as many of these pieces once did (and still do, somewhere), mr. 6ooa (ben chasny, y’all!) leans into the eternal — letting the winds of time scar his face and the light of all there is burn his skin black. grandmaster chas has sacrificed the body for his music time and again over the years. rtz is an iridescent chimera in full flight, viewed through stained glass. cataloging these early non-album excursions requires a bit of leg-(and mind) work. rtz travels back to the dawn of this century to locate “resurrection,” half of a time-lag split 12” with charalambides. “warm earth, which i’ve been told” is half of a mental telemetry split cd with vibracathedral orchestra and magic carpathians from 2003. “you can always see the sun,” was part of three lobed recordings’ purposeful availments subscription cd series in 2002. and nightly trembling was released way back in 1999 in an edition of 33 copies, all given away for free! that’s some spiritual shit right there. combined with a never-before-released extended piece called “punish the chasm with wings” from pre-millennial days and you’ve got yourself a deep, deep box set, crammed into a multi-faceted lp jacket. rich with excursions to exotic musical climes and rhythmic with prayerful chants from the dark shadows of the earth, rtz uses strings and bells, riffs both warm and icy, glowing lead guitars, massed voices and the pure, open air for its mantras and rituals. as the title alludes, these old sounds were forged in that bastion of personal expression, the four-track recorder. when a man can record a few feet from his bed, he becomes more inclined to render his nocturnal intuitions. and when that man is ben chasny, he can use those remastered (but still good and dusty) early recordings to attain the ultimate goal: a multi-faceted triple-gatefold lp! we should all be so lucky. oh wait, we are — now that we’ve got rtz forever, and more.

march 2009 release ; at long last - the fourth and final installment in this joint edition omega point / em records series, covering the sound-art work of fluxus-lineage sound-artist yoshi wada ... and what a long, strange trip it’s been !!! this whole series has instilled so much collective joy in amongst the leagues of past-looking experimental & drone-music followers that i’m sad to see it come to an end, but all things must ... and what better way than with this 77-minute excerpt of a 2 hour, 25 minute performance by yoshi, garrett list, barbara stewart, jim burton, and liz phillips recorded on february 24th, 1974 at the everson museum of art, syracuse, new york ... the piece opens (listen to the sound-sample) with a dry, slightly overtone-riddled sine-wave drone, over which the ensemble begin to intone on their “earth horns” - extended didgeridoo-lineage pipes (some up to 20 feet long !!!) - in unison over the tonal root ... as the piece gets underway, you really begin to feel the fabric of time slip away ; several consecutive listens-through consumed an entire afternoon, after which i had little memory of any events taking place ... this cd edition happens to be my preferred format-of-choice here as it offers the longest continuous stretch of music (plus, as the piece itself is something of a static, almost sculptural event you’ll probably want to keep this on automatic repeat for a few days - something very easy to achieve with cd players these days) ; comes with a fold-out booklet with english program notes on one side, and a george maciunas flyer for a performance by wada’s lip vibrators (see just below) on the flip. highly recommended !!!

i/d/v 01 7” series   a series of 7” records of 1 minute tracks and lock grooves. focus of each volume is on one particular instrument and on the ways in which invited artists address the specifics of duration as defined by the given format. duration here is not considered as a mere quantity of time, but as the subjective relations that we establish within time’s dimension. twelve participants to the first two releases contribute one minute-long track and two locked grooves (of 1.8 seconds at 33.1/3 rpm). each record has six 1-minute tracks and twelve locked grooves. either approached as open works of art or just as dj tools, the records in this series straightforwardly demand an active mode of listening. the first release, i/d/v 01, engages the very idea of turntable as an instrument, as defined by a world-spanning selection of avant-garde turntablists. opening track is lary 7’s minute-long piece, excerpt from a performance in which a vinyl cutting machine was fed with the sound of the room’s ambience, in order to generate a feedback loop. the collection features tracks also by joe colley, busratch, toshio kajiwara, tommy birchett and dieb13.

february 2009 release ; excellent, deluxe double-disc set covering only the earliest electronic music experiments carried out in denmark ... those of who follow the creel pone series will be familiar with a few of these names (fuzzy !!! - but also bent lorentzen & svend christiansen) & the others via the discs occasionally in stock here @ mms on the da capo label (else marie pade, gunner møller pedersen, jørgen plaetner) ... this set offers a selection of pieces (the majority dating back to the 1960s) focusing on the sparse, eruption-oriented work that sets apart the danish scene from the contemporaneous music produced in paris, tokyo, and the u.s. ... can’t get a much nicer cd edition ; the outer sleeve holds a six-panel double-disc gatefold sleeve with an extensive, 48-page booklet (danish in the left column, english on the right throughout) offering a few different chronologies, composers’ notes, and endless 60s gear porn / studio documentation :: the best “geographic survey” compilation i’ve come across this year ; highly recommended !!!

pioneers – the beginning of danish electronic music out on february 21st. finally ! a compilation that holds the earliest recordings of danish electronic music. the cd contains works by danish electronic pioneers else marie pade, jørgen plaetner, bent lorentzen, gunner møller pedersen, fuzzy, svend nielsen and svend christiansen. the booklet contains interviews with all the composers except from plaetner who died in 2002, and a general introduction to the environment surrounding the danish electronic musicians in the late 1950 - early 60's. the music has exclusively been offered to ljud who are very grateful. we cleaned the reel tapes, digitalized the music, made interviews etc. the double cd contains a lot of goodies: tons of so far unreleased music and a piece from 1963 by jørgen plaetner where danish poet jørgen gustava brandt reads a poem on top. one of the earliest recordings in denmark where music and poetry blends together. what a treat !

-- various artists - resonant hole, vol. 1 cdr mysterious compilation featuring eyes & arms of smoke, ara, three legged race, attempt, and irene moon, along with a host of tantalizing obscurities comprising the bulk of its 35-track, 70 minute duration. more questions than answers, here. jeanne vomit-terror sums it up pretty tidily: what is a hole? well, look around, because they can be found almost anywhere. your body is full of holes with distinct names and distinct uses, each abundant with a distinct mucous membrane, like a state bird. look up at the sky. it’s the biggest hole of all—-a hole so big that it goes all the way around you, and there’s no way to know whether you’ve fallen in or whether it’s even a hole at all. you yourself are a hole in the aether. a hole in the hole. you are a shallow hole with yourself at the bottom. your perimeter is malleable and consuming. that is, when you touch a hole, it becomes a part of the you-hole. because a hole is whole. the resonant hole is a useful one. it is a refracting lens for sound and thought, so that all that passes through it is stripped of order and meaning, so that we might know what our sounds are really trying to tell us. it is also a contagion, seeking to include and redefine your whole. this is not a music compilation, it is a mass hallucination. no matter what words you speak into the well, the echo that issues forth is a voice unfamiliar because it is not a sound—at least not as we understand sound. it is a vibration, shaking loose something ancient and intangible, opening the secret streets in the map of your mind, streets with names like rzrz and the appearants and silverware and idiot glee and hugo wheel. some streets are initially familiar, and so you stride confidently, comforted by lamps and shops and trees you know. but they lead not to a home, a heart, but into more holes… holes in holes in holes in holes in holes! a hole so big that it cannot be closed. we are at the bottom and still falling. hole is where the hear is.
