may 2009 release ; absolutely gorgeous edition from kotomimolehillkuroda :: gold-stamped lp sleeves with a 12-page booklet with an overview of the band written by mms’ customer takuya sakaguchi ...

three “studio” takes from mr. mikawa & mr. kosakai (heavy on the low-bit grit & gristle) coupled with an extended “live” flare-out from 2007 in which the duo’s apeshit-but-eminently-controlled harsh noise fury goes un-checked ...

kind of the perfect noise lp on a lot of levels ; highly recommended !!!

[dogma 001] incapacitants "tight" lp

absolutely most awaited full-length vinyl from incapacitants, is the purest noise enthusiast, originally formed by t. mikawa since 1981 in japan. here is the first ever solo lp vinyl in 20 years since the legendary album 'repo' published by alchemy records in 1989.

side-a titled 'k's family' features three brand new recordings with solid sense of direction keeping vigorous strength and stormy dynamics on each track. side-b is a long piece excerpted from overwhelming live recording as typical supreme tag team formation with f. kosakai at showboat in tokyo, 3 june 2007.

this is not only the new testament for all of noise fundamentalist, but also the shining introduction for those who are going to be resident in true noise fields. maximum purity as psychosomatic union proved by intensive electronics causing ghostly and fertility atmosphere filled with harshness. 'tight' is the same pronunciation with the most complex kanji character formed by three dragons and three clouds.

hand-numbered limited edition to 620 copies, comes in silk-screened sleeve with a golden kanji 'tight'. 12 paged booklet contains photos and japanese / english liner-notes by takuya sakaguchi.

li jianhonglovers with cloisonné bracelet / tbt009

hangzhou’s li jianhong has been performing alone and in the duo d!o!d!o!d! for several years, but he only caught western ears last year with the monumental san sheng shi, released by philadelphia’s archive cd. oceanic and desolate, lovers with cloisonné bracelet cements li as a distinctive voice in modern noise. the two halves of this record are an ideal introduction to li’s music: “lovers in misery” offers a restrained, electric swell; “time in the mirror” wallows in hototogisu-an guitar hell.  without sacrificing pacing for density, li has crafted an album that decimates the retrograde psychedelic guitar landscape and trivializes the petty violence of much harsh noise.

edition of 350 180 gm. lps in heavy-stock linen-paper sleeves hand-screened, -cut, and –glued by reuben little of 43rd parallel press.

kodamaturning leaf migrations” long playing record

  • there were seedling from the terraced lake side. doppled sprouting points where winters and springs where beginnings and endings met and these things stuck inside of each other like honey drops uprooting mycelium in the night forest of grmade we spoke with the bubilant sage while we crawled our dance around a fungus stump courting the tiny folks to come and play (18:42)

  • wandering around inside of ourea we blew into the breathing of the stochastic rushing water - and once again,  the mirror was too steams to cross the voracious throat then even falling couldn’t forge a path to send back the frozen land that sleeping river has seen the bombs that just sank into its phlegmatic walls backing up into a cultural ditch we slobbered through the din of the alcoholics’ babble hiding out in shelters where we bounced the wireless in circles, back on top of itself - so much so that the water didn’t come in we waved our leaves over broken branches piles on top of each other endlessly to obscure the spring where even once we slept by the arctic ocean when cloud drops bounced on our strings we rose on top and sang to the stars - so far that the differences were yet to be seen... january 2009 release ; the debut issue from the duo of michael northam & hitoshi kojo ...

as i pore through more & more records that were “put together in an afternoon,” it’s reassuring to hear / see / hold such an artifact borne of pure care / effort over a (comparably) long period of time ; from the fine inking of the lp’s cover / insert (detailed below) to the “not a gesture wasted” nature of the enclosed music, largely informed by the sturm & drang end of the musique concrète canon (a few contemporary touches are thrown in, such as the ringing digital sawtooth waves that dot the first “side”) with an omnipresent sense of the absurd (wouldn’t have caught it blindly, but yes, tazartès is a great touchstone for the kinds of arbitrary-yet-sensible edits herein) ...

definitely my personal favorite of this january oesb batch ; highly recommended !!!

oesb-18 kodama "turning leaf migrations" lp

brand new release - limited to 500 - this one's a monster - one of the best oesb releases to datekodama is the ongoing recording project of two well-known visual and sound artists - hitoshi kojo and michael northam - and this is their first widely available release as a duo. recorded in various improbable locations whenever they crossed paths over the course of several years and then finally edited and assembled in a cluttered garage in the west side of indianapolis. there is a decidedly more improvisational feel and crisp psychedelic aura to these recordings when compared to their other work and one can hear the influence of ghedalia tazartes in how the various recordings were stitched together.

to quote hitoshi kojo:

we are the spirit of forest. our howling has been offered to the many goddesses of the valleys. teething our emptiness they, licking the stars, until white holes appear in our sky through them towards regenerative guides of the tonal-morphic omni-verses.

using found objects to seduce voices from unlikely sources as well as traditional instruments of wind, wires and wood. kodama weaves between emotional poetry and dynamic forces of noises. the recordings have a strong atmosphere of each location - the top of a mountain in switzerland, a campground in ohio, lofoten island in norway, the arctic circle in finland, niagara falls, etc. it includes a lot of the dirts of the raw recordings, but also incredibly beautiful moments such as the session with an owl in a slovenian forest, an alpine summit singing meditation under the vast galaxy, and an encounter with the small people through strange ritual...

limited pressing of 500 copies.
covers & insert printed on 2-color offset press

november 2009 release ; one of the finds-of-the-year in regards to unheard early electronic music ...

in 1972 composer kåre kolberg composed this 25-minute piece as an “accompaniment” to anders kjær’s titular “sound-environment(detailed below) installed at the henie onstad art center in oslo ; the master-tape was summarily buried in the center’s archives, until lasse marhaug (in charge of rejuvenating the center’s in-house record label prisma) turned it up, some 37 years later ...

comprised of chopped-up trumpet, lid-slam grand piano, vocal phonèmes (ala amirkhanian’s “lexical music”) arranged into a heavily-filtered, explosion-heavy array, this piece ranks up there with dark concrète masterpieces from the likes of andré almuro, bent lorentzen, and the like ... highly recommended !!!

kåre kolberg: nova cd

available november 2009.

kåre kolberg (b.1936) is one of norway`s foremost contemporary composers and is regarded as one of the pioneers of early electronic music and cross-artistic art in scandinavia. he has composed music for film, theatre and chamber orchestras to jazz acts such as svein finnerud trio and jan garbarek.

the electronic tape composition presented on this cd was composed for the multi-media work nova created together with the artist anders kjær, presented at the henie onstad art centre from the 2nd to the 22th august 1972. nova was one of norway`s first sound installations. it included a specially designed light show and music played from tape - blended together with a huge 13 x 19 meter installation consisting of glass, rubber tires and piles of paper that the audience could walk through.

the composition made for this piece was found on a tape in the centre`s archives and prisma records is proud to release an hitherto unknown gem in norwegian early electronic music history.

december 2007 release ; first release of this epic 1974 drone piece by noted composer richard lainhart (check the double-disc “ten thousand shades of blue” set on experimental intermedia) ...

recorded on suny albany’s recently installed moog modular, “white night” ‘s constantly shifting pitch-array stays wholly in the tonal, each diatonically-tuned oscillator slowly rising & falling out of the swarm in differing periods, causing an extremely pleasant sea of swirling sound & slight upper-register beat-frequency activity ...

one of the overlooked pieces in the early synth-drone spectrum, i’d think ; mirko & company have done us a real service by issuing this in its complete, un-edited form ... highly recommended !!!

richard lainhart - white night
cat.#.: exo1974
format: cd, white jewel-case with four-page full colour booklet, 500 pressings
release date: 24.12.2007

back in 1974, one year before brian eno’s first landmark in ambient-music, some young musician from new york wrote down a fragment of beauty’s hidden story with the minimal vocabulary of sine waves on the young black skin of a moog synthesizer.

the first release on cd features richard lainhart’s masterpiece in its original 29-minutes-version. there’s no single second to add, after this time everything is told though nothing has been said.

richard lainhart about the work’s origin:

"white night" was composed and recorded in the late fall of 1974 at the state university of new york at albany in the coordinated electronic music studio (cems). cems was created by my composition teacher joel chadabe with design and custom fabrication by robert moog and was, at the time, the largest integrated moog modular synthesizer studio in the world.

the piece consists of a dense, continuous four-note chord, each note in the chord recorded in a separate pass to one track on a scully 4-track studio recorder. each track consists of a single sine wave oscillator which is frequency modulated by a group of eight additional sine wave oscillators. those oscillators are all tuned to different tones, each harmonically related to the fundamental chord tone. the amplitude of each harmonic oscillator is continuously varied under the control of an individual sequencer, and each sequencer is free-running - that is, the sequencers are not synchronized to each other, but rather running in their own independent timebases. the result is a continuously-changing complex harmonic waveform which modulates the frequency of the chord tone oscillator, generating a continuously-changing complex timbre based on the fundamental pitch of the note.

the center tone of "white night" is 212 hz, slightly higher than the g below middle c. the other notes create a chord consisting of a perfect fifth below the center tone, a major seventh just below the center tone, and a major second above the center tone. "white night" was composed without reference to the standard a-440 tuning system, as we had no such pitch reference in the studio; i just picked a center tone that felt right, and went from there. as such, "white night" lives in its own pitch world.

the title "white night" came about so: it was late december in upstate new york when i was finishing the piece, and a blizzard passed through town the night of the final mix. as i sat in the glow of the sequencers and tape decks in the university studio listening to the final version, i looked out the window and saw a security light on a building opposite the studio illuminating the blowing snow as it drifted off the roof. all i could see was the snow swirling in the light against the blackness; a moving painting continually drawn, erased, and redrawn, always changing, but always the same. it may sound bleak, but it wasn't - it was beautiful. it seemed to me that the image of the dancing whiteness perfectly matched the sound of the piece, and so i called it "white night" to commemorate that evening of wind and snow.

november 2009 release ; blistering 2-part tape-music / musique concrète composition from graham lambkin, hot on the heels of his (already o/p)salmon run” and “the breadwinner” set(s) ...

utilizing a banner of field recordings, samara lubelski’s violin, and austin argentieri’s guitar playing, lambkin’s adept construct(s) take in the “classic-eraconcrète signifiers (the four elements ; man vs. nature, etc ...), going “off the railsfrequently & delving often into some of walter marchetti’s “home-made electric music” tactics (soft recordings of loudly occuring events ; occasionally the opposite) to yield something that is at once informed by the lineage of electro-acoustic composition yet playfully irreverent in terms of the “properform / flow patterns that have emerged over the past 60-odd years ...

excellent work ; my cursory listens thusfar (in the office, loud, at night, enebriated) have me rating it even higher than the bar-settingsalmon run” ; highly recommended !!!

int034 lethecatastrophe point #5 cd

catastrophe point #5 is the latest in kuwayama kiyoharu’s signature series of compositions that explore the charged, mysterious atmosphere of disused industrial sites. for this album, lethe turns his attention to an abandoned warehouse by a pier in his hometown of nagoya, japan, using objects discovered in situ to perform a ritual of sonic resurrection. he brings a dead space back to life, giving it a voice and allowing it to speak. metal chains, sheet metal, broken machinery, and factory debris are bowed, struck, and dragged across the concrete floors of the massive hall, reverberating and responding as kuwayama and his microphones scuttle across the desolate terrain. growling cello and unstable horns underscore the torrents of percussive clatter. catastrophe point #5 is a haunting album of volatile, malevolent ambiance.

kiyoharu kuwayama began working with sound in the late 1980s, using half-scale violin, cello, and found junk objects in the group minotaure. in 1999, he and violinist rina kijima formed the improvisational acoustic duo kuwayama-kijima to bring their instruments outdoors and perform in environments with unique acoustic properties, notably underneath a highway overpass and in a construction site. between 1999 and 2003, kuwayama organized the five-day-long lethe.voice.festival in an unused grain warehouse.

lethe’s previous release on intransitive was tsurumai, a stellar collaborative cd with dutch noise legends kapotte muziek. he has also appeared on albums with bassist matt heyner (malkuth, cold bleak heat, no-neck blues band), jonathan coleclough, hidekai shimada (agencement), carter thornton (enos slaughter, izititiz), kiyoshi mizutani, and campbell kneale (birchville cat motel).

for fans of christoph heemann, surface of the earth, the new blockaders, z’ev, or organum.

march 2009 release ; two march 2004 performances from alan licht, seamlessly woven into a single piece ...

this set was originally slated for release via idea recordings during the year following the concerts, yet it remained un-issued until now ; thanks to the efforts of family vineyard’s eric weddle we can all sit back & enjoy the lulling ebow & finger-style vibes (side 1) followed by a coruscating round of whammy-pedal setting-skip (listen to the sound-sample) peaking in a fury of rectifiednoise guitar” antics before subsiding into mutated pitch-shifted amalgams of the intro (side 2) ...

while i love alan’s more recent forays into radio-static & through-composed minimalism, i think of him first as a kick-ass improvising guitarist ; this offers everything i’d want from this mode ... highly recommended !!!

alan licht
ymca
fv63 lp

ymca is guitarist alan licht's first solo release since 2003's a new york minute double cd (on xi), and his first solo vinyl outing since 1994's long out-of-print sink the aging process (on siltbreeze).

largely recorded at a 2004 concert at a cambridge massachusetts ymca by keith fullerton whitman, ymca documents licht's solo guitar set of the time -- a three-part structured improvisation that moves from mournful, layered sustained tones that sound more like a reed organ than a guitar, to a gently plucked middle section, to a final firestorm of loop processing that is a tour de force of "the changing same."

inspired by his friends oren ambarchi and tetuzi akiyama's then-current albums (trieste and don't forget to boogie), licht proposed ymca to idea records to form a kind of trilogy with those releases. with idea's subsequent demise, family vineyard has stepped in to bring this peak performance out as a special limited edition vinyl release, exactly as the artist originally conceived it.

lp limited to 500 copies.

over the past two decades, guitarist alan licht has worked with a veritable who's who of the experimental world, from free jazz legends (rashied ali, derek bailey) and electronica wizards (fennesz, jim o'rourke) to turntable masters (dj spooky, christian marclay) and veteran downtown new york composers (john zorn, rhys chatham).

licht is also renown in the indie rock scene as a bandleader (run on, love child) and supporting player to cult legends like tom verlaine, arthur lee, arto lindsay, and jandek. he has released five albums of compositions for tape and solo guitar, and his sound and video installations have been exhibited in the u.s. and europe. with sonic youth's lee ranaldo, he founded text of light, an ongoing ensemble which performs freely improvised concerts alongside screenings of classic avant garde cinema. he has written extensively about the arts in many magazines and his second book, sound art: beyond music, between media, was published in fall 2007.

peter liechti / voice crackkick that habit” digital versatile disc

  • kick that habit (45:00)
january 2009 release ; domestic, ntsc dvd (replacing the pal edition on liechti’s own best productions imprint - same print / transfer) of my all-time favorite sound-art film, peter liechti’s 1989 survey of the actions of norbert möslang & andy guhl’s voice crack, “kick that habit” ...

starting with the group examining the machinations of a miniature golf course, we’re taken on a trip through late-80s switzerland ; up into the swiss alps for a “long string” performance, back to norbert’s st. gallen workshop for some equipment testing, even a fully amplified / contact-mic’ed sit-down lunch with the group ...

liechti captures all of this in grainy, alternating b/w & color shots ; the camera always acting as an omniscient observer, never interfering with the proceedings (lending a tone of pathos to the film & to norbert & andy’s actions) ...

i’ve watched this film straight through on a semi-monthly basis since discovering it a decade or so back ; rarely has non-standard music-making practice been this sympathetically handled on film, and it’s unlikely it ever will again ... worth it for the raw concert footage of the group alone, but as a meditation on the drive & enthusiasm (in the face of little interest/audience) needed to sustain a life in experimental music it really can’t be beat ... highest recommendation !!!

kick that habit is a 1989 film by peter liechti, an audio-visual portrait of his native country, eastern switzerland. the film collects samples from the land-and-soundscape, underscoring in the process the oft-ignored industrial underpinning of our latter-day culture.

also native to eastern switzerland is voice crack, the everyday household electronics duo of norbert möslang and andy guhl, whose musical workings are explored as part of liechti’s vision. whether clicking quietly and rhythmically or humming and shrieking at ear-splitting volume, their recycled electronics produce innovative sounds and provide an appropriate accompaniment in this cinematic search for the detritus of our culture, the lost and destroyed remains of the last century of progress.

kick that habit is a short, tense film comprised of flashing images: footage of voice crack rehearsals and concerts is juxtaposed with visual shards of the fall and winter landscape of the area between alpstein and the bodensee. utilizing color and black-and-white footage as well as combining the visual and the acoustic in an expression that subtly synthesizes the two, liechti delineates a world of existence through sound and geography. like the world the rest of us live in, it’s a world of beauty, quiet tragedy and the endless march forward.

peter liechti is a swiss film maker with over a dozen films to his credit, including the documentaries lucky jack, namibia crossing, signer’s koffer (to be issued in 2009 on drag city as signer’s suitcase) and the crime drama martha’s garten, which received nominations at the rotterdam international film festival, the max ophuls festival and the locarano international film festival.

kick that habit takes its title from a voice crack album of the same name released in 1986. this film operates as a portrait of voice crack’s unique methodology in their prime. norbert möslang and andy guhl are voice crack. their work refers to pioneering radio and electronic techniques on the one hand, and on the other to the achievements of specific art movements of the 20th century such as futurism, the russian avant-garde and dada. their album earflash is available on the dexter’s cigar label.

the package for kick that habit dvd contains a fourteen page booklet with stills from the film and other photos as well as a short essay on the making of the film and a biography of voice crack.

  • signer’s suitcase • on the road with roman signer (1:19:41)
may 2009 release ; second domestic drag city issue of peter liechti’s film-work after the essentialkick that habit” overview of voice crack ...

in this 1995 film, we’re taken around the world in pursuit of venerable “action sculptorroman signer (first seen maneuvering a helicopter flight simulator in the film’s opening sequence, then crashing a remote controlled one into an abandoned hotel) ; the film in shot in the same style as “kick(alternatingly grainy color / black & white shots dwell on the subject matter long enough for the subtleties to be noticed) & the whole film has a certain meditative flair (even as, repeatedly, signer’s wool hat is tied to a model rocket & launched into space) ...

a fine piece of art-film ; highly recommended to fans of “kick that habit” ...

roman signer: the buster keaton of art

roman signer has had many trades. he’s worked in a pressure cooker factory, as a draftsman, a security guard, forklift driver, a water measurement assistant, and my favorite, in a polyester factory. it wasn’t until 1972 that he saved up enough money to get a studio and start making art. from this biographical account, it’s hard not to see how signer’s instruments have developed directly from his life experiences. since 1973 roman signer has been in over 50 one-man exhibits and around 100 joint exhibitions. for the past few years his artistic successes have enabled him to do without part-time jobs.

signer’s suitcase (aka signers koffer) is a kind of road movie across europe — from the swiss alps to eastern poland, from stromboli to iceland. immersing yourself, letting yourself be infected, then traveling on. with his deadpanned gags, signer gives a humorous twist to the concept of cause and effect and to the traditional scientific method of experimentation and discovery, taking on the self-evidence of scientific logic as an artistic challenge.

filmmaker peter liechti’s improvisational response frames signer’s visual humor with equally dry relish. a wonderfully diverting road trip, with roman signer leading the way.

october 2009 release ; brilliant vinyl-only set from robertlichenslowe, most recently seen out on the open road supporting om (both as an opening act & as a “third” ; contributing some ghostly vocals & assorted keyboard / guitar scatter to their increasingly eastern-themed doom-throb) ...

... rather than a set of rob’s now-trademark looped vocals, this one’s concerned with analogue synth & minimalism-inspired guitar patternage, ranging from the opener’s echoes of popol vuh, to the sliding, sky records-lineagecyclamen”, the the pervasive “library music” feel of the majority of the second side (esp. the sonoton, kpm, and studio gsynth” libraries) ...

some of the best i’ve heard from rob, timed perfectly with contemporary synth-music’s shift away from straight tangerine dream-lineage drone-cycling into other areas ... lovely lp edition, housed in a double-a-side paste-on with a full-color poster inside listing the tracks (all titles in ... esperanto !!! ) ; highly recommended !!!

title : fazo iv: la kvalito de speguloj
artist : robert a.a. lowe
catalogue #: rbbd004
file under : experimental, ambient, drone
release date : 11/10/09
format : lp

on fazo iv: la kvalito de speguloj, robert aiki aubrey lowe (lichens, singer, 90 day men) constructs haunting, beautiful, at times hypnotic rhythms and melodies using synthesizers. his love of the warm, bubbling, physical sounds of the synthesizer permeates these seven songs, which seem simultaneously strangely familiar yet also somehow distant and alien.

fazo iv: la kvalito de speguloj (phase 4: the quality of mirrors) is a further extension of lowe’s exploration of sonic vocabularies and emotional landscapes. because the modes lowe utilizes are tonally and melodically universal to his ear, he has titled the album in the language of esperanto -- the universal language constructed to foster international understanding and peace. this notion of univeral understanding comes through in waves on fazo iv. there is a certain tranquility in these tracks -- something very meditative and therapeutic; a calming honesty that leads the mind inward and transcends language.

"two poems"
(cat no. plana-l 18vocson065).
lp record

edition of 385 copies

alga marghen proudly presents an lp edition including two experimental sound works by gherasim luca, created in close connection to sten hanson who invited the rumenian artist at fylkingen in the very beginning of the 1970s and made him discover the possibilities of the advanced ems electronic music studio of stockholm. the two recordings presented here are quite unique as they are the only poems by gherasim luca created through the use of electronic manipulations.

as henri chopin wrote some years later in his legendary "poésie sonore internationale" book, ghérasim luca made a big impression at the third stockholm festival in 1970. luca was born in bucarest in 1913. before leaving to israel he had a leading role among the roumanian surrealist group. he eventually moved to paris where he lived untill the end of his life in 1992. gherasim  luca work is very personal, giving his poems a very uncommon and ironic character. again henri chopin underlines that  "in his recordings, which are not many, he superimposes his very warm voice, marked by his roumanian accent; it's a sound wonder. in fact luca is not a sound poet. he is more a speaker who managed, without complex, to enter into the fylkingen studio vortex. on 4 tracks and with 32 loudspeakers, thanks to his superb voice and his instinctive knowledge of the electronic studio which amplifies words, he gives great pleasure to the listener, even if the latter can not understand french".

autres secrets du vide et du plein(april 1971) and “crimes sens initiales (april 1972) were both recorded one track at the time on a 4 track tape and afterwards subjected to electronic treatments. they were recorded in sweden at ems and first performed at the 1971 and 1972 text-sound festivals of stockholm.

edition limited to 385 copies, also including the reproduction of a worderful drawing by gherasim luca on the front cover, a photo portrait of the author by gilles ehrmann from 1959 and an essay by henri chopin.

  • dawn shrine
click the play button to hear an excerpt of "howl"
february 2009 release ; first widely available release from josh stevenson’s magneticring project (after a heavy tape which didn’t get far beyond it’s brooklyn origins) ...

josh has long been on the scene for a while now, first playing with the group staked plain, then solo as - outhern acific +, then with jackie-o motherfucker & countless other travelers (i know he’s in w/ kemialliset ystävät these days) ; plus he runs the excellent cast exotic archives imprint (remember that lush 2cd phillip werren set ?) ... yep, so he’s been there ...

here we get josh in straight-up kosmische mode ; the thick film of wooshing organs & burbling synths that act as the groundwerk for “white umbrella” do float on for a good 10 minutes, before a riotous wave of acidic / rectified guitar cracks the surface (seriously ; this would make richard pinhas weep tears of acid joy) ...

howl” grafts the direct-guitar tones of faust’s “krautrock” onto a slow filter-sweep evoking the construction of the great pyramid of giza, while the intro-layers of “dawn shrine” recall the radiophonic workshop’s work on william hartnell-era doctor who, before a set of lovely modal animations draw things to a close ...

i don’t want to frame this thing purely as a period piece ; obviously the music was made in the here & now using a combination of vintage & contemporary tech ... but josh’s attention to era detail is entirely commendable, this really could have come out at any point from the mid-70s until now & somehow still sound contemporary, which is no small feat ...

if you’re feeling the current synth-wave, especially the sky records leaning end of it, look no further for a shining example. highly recommended !!!

august 2009 release ; can’t believe i missed this in the previous round, as in many ways it’s the crystallization of joshua & andrew / beniffer edition’s whole aesthetic / “thing” ::

... a hand-bound, 96-page book (printed on heavy card-stock, no less) covering their collage-art, poetry, and assorted constructions presented in a bag with two tapes, offering a side each by dolphins into the future (lieven martens’ new age synth zones), crown now (teenage sound-poetry with a prior tape on jessica rylan’s irfp), man made hill (”pawn-shop electronics” ; but more like the love child of ymo & felix kubin - listen to the sound-sample), and lead sister ii (“a one-man kemialliset ystavat”), along with four double-sided inserts covering the details of each of the musical contributions (see below) ...

the whole thing’s dripping with blind enthusiasm (well, maybe not as much blind as driven) ; by far the most effort-oriented title we’ve have in a while ... highly recommended !!!

beniffer editions winter anthology - book and 2x cassette

96 page monster book featuring the visual smegma of jacob horwood and andrew zukerman and more! contains ayal senior's the last screenplay, an unabridged, unwound stammer through his 340972 film ideas, an instant classic, really... the book includes a 4-way split over 2 cassettes, featuring man made hill (canada), dolphins into the future (belgium), lead sister ii (japan) and crown now (usa) ...

man made hill is all of the jackson 5 (even the dead one) channeled through one white-man with his sub-par pawn-shop electronics and extensive knowledge of "avant-aesthetics". this is guilt-free dance music.

dolphins into the future is lieven martens of imvated, or whatever label he's doing right now, a reformed nude-noise ruffian now turned onto the new age by the holographic entities of jung, gurdjieff and watts and trying to replicate the sound a dolphin makes in a napolitaner carton filled with peroxide.

lead sister ii is a one-man kemialliset ystavat forging new directions with a battery of home-made instruments and noise-makers. why this is not a colony of dumpster-diving vegans in the foothills of some 60's parody is a mystery to me.

crown now is a boy and a girl, a dejected duo brought together because they wanted to make the cheerleading squad. this document of their practice the night before and also the reason why they were rejected is the fourth and final side of your patience.

seven pieces, each separated by a different quality of “silence” ; the tying bond here is the use of both ethnic folk music (specifically field & location recordings of vocal ululation & almost sound-poetry lineage glottal activities) ... at any given point there are at least two or three elements working in a dissonant unison, causing a pervasive sense of displacement that runs through the album’s core ...

int014 lionel marchettiknud un nom de serpent (le cercle des entrailles) cd

back by popular demand! lionel marchetti's classic album of harrowing tape music from 1999, knud un nom de serpent (le cercle des entrailles), was published by intransitive in 1999, quickly sold out, and remains the most requested title to be resurrected from our back catalog. we're thrilled to make knud available again, now with a striking new cover design and an appreciative essay by bhob rainey ( nmperign , the bsc ).

the gripping drama of knud un nom de serpent illustrates marchetti's idea of popular music as shamanic ritual, a gateway to ecstatic altered states. armed with fierce wit and a razor blade, he smashes together sounds from all over the world into a hallucinatory cyclone of jamaican reggae, french chanson, american avant garde vocalists, thai pop songs, nature recordings, spoken text, and more. the result is a chilling work of furious, obliquely narrative tape collage and tense, frightening scenes. as marchetti explained to the wire magazine, "i've always been interested in the idea of the medicine man. someone who by sheer force of imagination transports you into another world, part artist, part healer. maybe that's what a composer is."

lionel marchetti (france, 1967) is a self taught composer of musique concrète. he has built his own recording studio, and has composed in the groupe de recherches musicales in paris since 1993. marchetti also performs improvised music with microphones and loudspeakers as a duo with jérôme noetinger, as part of the group quintetavant , and with the collective le cube , which performs live music and interactive film. marchetti's book la musique concrète de michel chion was published by éditions metamkine in 1998.

january 2009 release ; striking double-lp set, covering a collaboration between venerable iranian electro-acoustic composer alireza mashayekhi & his iranian orchestra for new music and younger computer musician atasoteebtekar (the two were previously paired-up on sub rosa’s excellent “persian electronic music: yesterday and today 1966-2006” set) ...

... and by striking, i’m referring both to ata’s transformations of the acoustic sound-materials, and the cover’s intense aperiodic geometric tessellations ::

echoing much of the “live electronic” work that dots the 60s / 70s compositional landscape, the raw acoustic timbres of mashayekhi’s writing are rarely heard herein ; ebtekar’s unfettered electronic processes (including much use of classic modes such as ring modulation, along with contemporary granular & spectral reductions) render the sparse writing a constantly mutating stew of gained squawks and fizzing, gauzy drones ...

it’s rare to hear such a project come from anything other than the academic label-system these days ; even rarer that we’re treated to such a deluxe double-lp edition ... highly recommended !!!

[iso_07] ata ebtekar & the iranian orchestra for new music performing works of alireza mashayekhi "ornamental" 2xlp.

release date: january 20th, 2009
artist location: berkeley, california u.s.a.
total running length: 51:11

an ambitious, extremely complex, and sonically rich project that gives us an immense pleasure to release. an incredible collaboration between ebtekar and alireza mashayekhi's iranian orchestra for new music in tehran, iran involving dozens of trained musicians. ebtekar has recently returned to the bay area from his three year stay in iran where he closely worked with legendary composer alireza mashayekhi. the album spans 50 minutes crystallizing acoustic instruments and electronic music composition with ten tracks fully realized by ebtekar and mashayekhi's orchestra.

ata ebtekar (b. 1972, hamburg germany) aka sote is an iranian-american electronic composer and sound artist. his compositions are sonic tales synchronously decoding and regenerating customary patterns of thought in nature; aural designs of crisis and harmony where contempo meets folklore, orchestrating an artificial saga with a variety of illuminations and analysis. presented here is a full-length album involving dozens of trained musicians performing works written by legendary iranian classical and electronic music composer alireza mashayekhi in which ebtekar was granted freedom by mashayekhi himself to arrange and transform these compositions into fully realized pieces using his techniques of synthesis and electronic manipulation.

"ornamental" continues to explore even further than that which was presented in sub rosa's 2007 anthology, "persian electronic music (yesterday and today 1966-2006)". the album also continues the radical experimental departure from his early electronic music work as sote in the 12"'s published by dielectric and warp records. ebtekar's work continues to be painfully singular and shines bright in its ability to eliminate barriers the world over between noise, silence and modern electronic music composition.

all music recorded in tehran, iran. limited to 500 copies on black vinyl on full color spot-varnish matte jackets. mastered by thomas dimuzio at gench studios in san francisco, ca. artwork and design by brandon nickell.

the key to the kingdom
10"

limited numbered edition of 400 copies!

"the key to the kingdom" is stephan mathieu's tribute to the great gospel preacher washington phillips and the world of raw, early gospel on 78rpm platters. the 2-part suite, presented in the classic 10" vinyl format that comes in a authentic, individually stamped and numbered 78rpm archive sleeve, has been performed on a historic phonoharp no.2 zither from the 1890s utilizing five e-bows and entropic and convolution processes. "the key to the kingdom" is a spin-off of mathieu's "virginals" project, a solo recital of contemporary classics performed on historic instruments.

stephan mathieu is a musician and sound artist based in saarbrücken, germany. during the last decade his music has been released on 16 critical acclaimed cds, both solo and in collaboration with douglas benford, ekkehard ehlers, john hudak, janek schaefer and akira rabelais on some of the finest electronic music labels worldwide (die schachtel, häpna, ritornell, lucky kitchen, headz). his sound is largely based on early instruments, environmental sound and obsolete media which are recorded and transformed by means of experimental microphony, re-editing techniques and software processes involving spectral analysis and convolution and has been compared to the landscape paintings of caspar david friedrich and the work of colorfield artists mark rothko, barnett newman and ellsworth kelly. stephan is a collector of 78rpm records from the 1910s and 20s, the era of acoustic and early electronic audio recording. his most recent album "radioland" made it into "best of 2008" lists in the wire, dusted, boomkat, milkfactory and many others.

december 2009 release ; finally available, the “propermass-market edition of this excellent set of pieces from bruce mcclure, using an involved setup including multiple film projectors, optical sound-tracks, and guitar pedals to yield a dense array of shifting / morphing / phasing sound, in this case recorded as performed (at face-melting volume) at the walker art center earlier this year ...

aside from the unique nature of his setup, the music here couldn’t be farther away from any known paths, largely taking form as a series of looped pulses sent through metallic digital delays resulting in a kind of robotic-feel verison of reich’s early tape-phase pieces ... yet the unstable nature of mcclure’s volatile systems yield tons of polyrhythmic patternage, the woozy timing imperfections lending much to the overall effect ...

oesb-36 bruce mcclure "vouchsafe me more soundpicture (fain make glories)" lp

bruce mcclure is well known on the international experimental film circuit for his unique projector performances that utilize film loops & modified 16mm projectors. but there is also an equally innovative sound element to his work and he has been embraced by the experimental music community as well. bruce performed at the chocolate monk curated "colour out of space" festival in 2008 and was chosen as an opening act for throbbing gristle's reunion tour in the spring of 2009.

during mcclure's performances the optical sound signals from each projector are fed through banks of guitar pedals, manipulated live, and played at extremely high volumes through the p.a. system. the different loops phase in and out of each other resulting in what could be described as a power electronics version of the early tape experiments of steve reich and terry riley, while sparser sections have an off-kilter minimal techno feel reminiscent of plastikman and the early works of thomas brinkmann.

this album features four excerpts from a professionally recorded performance in early 2009 at the walker art center in minneapolis, mn.

july 2009 release ; frankly ridiculous 12-tapebible” of live recordings from matt valentine & erika elder, recorded over the past 7-odd years by the duo, in cahoots with pretty much a who’s who from their extended orbit / family / genealogy / lineage :: tim barnes, samara lubelski, willie lane, nemo bidstrup, tom carter, j. mascis, sloow bart, jeremywoodsearl, chris corsano, and many others ...

the whole thing is presented in an “audiobook” style fold-out vinyl case ; each tape is silk-screened with the relevant dates / info, and there’s a four-page legend explaining who played on what, where it was recorded, and who by ... entirely impressive both as a group effort / hug from the band to / from their “taper’s pit” and as a documentary of the pair’s musical evolution ... highly recommended !!!

ps. note to domestic (i.e. us-based) customers - these are already here in the states - shipping will only be a scant $4 or so via media mail. just thought i’d point that out. been seeing these out for sale in the u.k. for around £47 / $80 (yep, that’s the exchange rate right now !!!) - but always with a shipping tariff of £12 / $20 to the states ... something to think about ...

mv & ee - road trips 12 x cassette box set
blackest rainbow/alt.vinyl

limited to 250 copies. pro-dubbed cassettes in presentation case.

the box set documents the mv & ee live experience in various incarnations between 2002 and 2009. the music is entirely unreleased material (with the exception of guitar barn featuring j mascis and tom carter, which was issued as a bootleg cdr in the heroine style, but was actually unofficial). highlights include a 2002 mv & ee medicine show performance, the guitar barn jam with j mascis and tom carter, a new band, mv & ee with the wolfpack, a recent set with jeremy earl of woods, as well as classic bummer road and golden road jams.

the box set will be presented chronologically and culminates in a pete's pix vol. 2 featuring 7 tracks from various dates mainly in the uk (including tracks from the thurston moore curated atp in 2006, and dylan nyoukis' 2006 colour out of space fest - both of which feature chris corsano).

october 2009 release ; ... was surprised to learn that, after a decade of recorded music (ranging from their selektion-label set, to two “live” discs on twisted village, to their american tapes “cover” of “salt peanuts”) that this, effectively bhob rainey & greg kelley’s swan-song (bhob up & moved to new orleans a few months back) also does double-duty as their debutstudio” album ...

there’s a bit of dissent as to who birthed the contemporary “reductionism” movement in improvised music ; that’s ultimately neither here nor there, save for the fact that these guys were my personal entry-point into the spectrum of near-silent, gestural improv ... their concerts here in town over the years have certainly forced me to re-think how to listen to music ; the exhilaration not only of the micro-volumes at which they play (far more terrifying than any jet-engine noise or rock/metal concerts i’ve been to ; even a stray cough or shuffle could be many decibels-fold above their playing, causing a near-complete inversion of performer-audience relations) but also the clean break from idiomatic “free improv” and/or “modern classical” modes is always palpable ...

the language they’ve jointly developed over the years, comprised both of modern-composition-lineageextended techniques” and timbres lifted straight from early electronic music, is unquestionably theirs & theirs alone (despite the hordes of acolytes and straight biters) ; here they finally display it all in impeccably-captured detail in an anechoic chamber-like setting ... frankly bhob’s knee-muted multiphonics & greg’s trumpet-barrel scrapings have never sounded better, and the interplay between the two has, after so many years spent honing their collective craft, reached a third-mind zenith, resulting in an uncanny amount of “happy accident” style moments across the album’s sixsong-length” pieces ...

this intransitive releases comes as a high-detail digipack, coated in a set of bee close-ups (by irene moon, no less) that perfectly articulate the music’s often microscopic inflections ... improv album of the year, hands down ; highly recommended !!!

int035 nmperignommatidia” cd

nmperign are one of the most celebrated and influential bands in contemporary improvised music. yet surprisingly, more than a decade after their debut, greg kelley (trumpet) and bhob rainey (soprano sax) have never recorded a studio album as an unaccompanied duo … until now!

the music is spare and peerlessly inventive as always, but the mood remains light and joyful, with a subtle undercurrent of absurd humor. while improvised music can sometimes seem airless and precious, ommatidia opens the window on a sunny afternoon… the album’s gusts of breath, percussive splatter, and controlled explosions form six succinct pieces that feel alive and vital, while still speaking in nmperign’s utterly unique sonic language. a perfect way in for newcomers and a revelation for long-time fans, ommatidia is the essential nmperign.

previous nmperign albums have employed guest musicians – notably close collaborator and tape loop saboteur jason lescalleet, but also luminaries such as gunter mueller, axel doerner, andrea neumann, and burkhard beins – and subversive or dodgy recording techniques; their 2 x lp on siwa was recorded entirely to micro-cassette and cassette walkman, while an early cd on selektion was edited from live mini-disc recordings. intransitive is proud to present the nmperign album that fans have been waiting for: the core duo, beautifully recorded in an actual studio with excellent microphones.

when not making nmperign music, greg kelley performs with the aggressively psychedelic noise unit heathen shame (along with wayne rogers & kate village of major stars), minimalist chamber group the undr quartet, and raucous rock band life partners. rainey regularly tours with folk/pop duo damon & naomi and leads the bsc, an eight-piece electro-acoustic improvising ensemble. they live in boston and new orleans, respectively.

limited edition cd comes in full-color digipack designed by mike shiflet.orded in an actual studio with excellent microphones.

february 2009 release ; bitchindouble-tape boxed set from jeff hartford, outlining both his neolithic in-situ amp/voice strategem (listen to the sound-sample ; this is a far cry from your average harsh-noise tectonics - there’s development & a dynamic range pretty much unheard of in this day of “wall noise”) and his inspired xerox-collage artwork (detailed in a small chap-book, included in the box) ...

arbor66 noise nomads - "tone deaf" 2xc20 + zine

total western mass scum. jeff hartford (grey skull, bonescraper) destroys all sonic barriers; forty minutes of harsh, sweating electronics and acoustic rampage straight from the gutter. hartford always leaves the audience guessing, whether it is his cut up garbage sources, contact mic’d gurgles or hairwhips, the end result is guaranteed to be something physical. the truth lies somewhere within the mess of cables and the stack of amps; they must be destroyed to uncover it.

in an edition of 100 double tape sets with printed labels and a zine housed in a 7reel to reel box with full color paste on by nn.

charlie nothingthe psychedelic saxophone of charlie nothing” long playing record

click the play button to hear an excerpt of "the psychedelic saxophone ..."
november 2009 release ; near-exactrepro” of this 1967 takoma sub-label release, centering around 60s capsule-intaker & dingulator inventor/philosopher charlie nothing ...

... accompanied by the occasional bongo-jamming (c/o “brother frederic”) & what sounds like a continuous wash of soft-malleted cymbals (more likely the artifact(s) / “dingulations”of stand-mounted dingulators ; bizarre, hand-crafted guitar-like instruments of charlie’s own devising, built from junked american automobiles, pictured here as played by mid-70s agglomerate “the superfabulous dingulators” ::

... some with up to 21 strings ; playable by fretting, tapping, or by hitting the bodies ala percussion instruments)
, charlie (né charles martin simon) absolutely blows his guts out in a freewheeling stream of sax improvisations, in spots recalling braxton’s “for alto” but far less informed by jazz modes ...

this has long been a cult record, rare as hen’s teeth (even many die-hard takoma completists are w/o a copy) ; so this picture-perfect replica (replete with full-color spray-glue-on covers & accurate repro labels) is a real treat ... highly recommended !!!

charlie nothing
was not born. did not die. does not, did not, will not exist. charlie nothing is the artist.

charlie nothing the artist is a subdivision of charles martin simon the writer. some writers have no problem doing art. for example, henry miller was somewhat of a painter. charles martin simon, however, could not, can not, will never be able to do art. when his wife the artist died, he inherited her art supplies and so he had to try, but the experience proved futile, painful, and produced a psyche fragmentation, which he, having been reduced to nothing, named charlie nothing.

charlie nothing could do art fabulously, did and does.

charlie nothing creations span a wide range, the pinnacle being the guitar sculptures made out of american cars called dingulators. dingulators are the ultimate rock and roll art, which makes charlie nothing the ultimate rock and roll artist. fitting for a guy who doesn't exist, although, non-existence may very well be a criterion (based on the total life performances of so many characteristic artists of the genre).

charlie nothing instrument sculptures play with unique sound.

a photo detail of one of charlie nothing's dingulators appears as the back cover art on the very important and very big fine art book by jake jacobson, hearts & minds, musical instrument makers of america and also as the cover art on the "the western region" section of the book.

charlie nothing had many dingalation bands during the 60s, 70s, and 80s. dingulations ranged from very well received (after one performance in l.a., charlie nothing was offered a ton of money to take a tour to viet nam with bob hope to entertain the troops. he declined, figuring he was more likely to get shot than get the money.) to being spat upon by human beings who could not tolerate the disrespect that dingulation represented to the hamster hierarchy of respectable entertainment.

charlie nothing has had many art shows in very established galleries which are no longer in existence. one of the first canvases he ever produced was purchased by the san francisco museum of modern art circa 1963, after being featured in a show called new york artists. he has performed in many places and times, including an official and very exclusive concert in the los angeles museum of modern art. he has written many songs which were anthologized in the "big dingulator song book," which is unavailable. he composed and produced records and tapes as far back as the late 60s. one of his lps "the psychedelic saxophone of charlie nothing" was produced and released by tacoma records and achieved an infinitesimal degree of infamy in europe under the category of new jazz, which, of course, it was not.

charlie nothing quit performing in the 1980s, believing he had evolved past the entertaining-monkey-jumping-up-and-down-on-the-stage stage.

charlie nothing came back to performing in 2004, realizing he was in fact a monkey jumping up and down.

charlie nothing characterizes himself as a philosopher/clown.
