better ever than never, i always say ...

of the 1,330 new-to-stock titles received throughout 2009, the listings below represent the best-of-the-best ; the titles that we can recommend uncategorically to anyone with even a passing interest in experimental & electronic sound ... or at least the best of the titles that we still have in stock !!!

... and therein lies the stumbling block that has kept this list at bay for the past 6 months ; do we represent every "limited to 100" title that we loved & distributed only for a blip before it instantly sold out only to canonize them and / or add to their aftermarket value, or do we adhere to our long-standing "everything on the site is in print, in stock, and available" modus ? ultimately we decided to go with the latter ; everything below can be yours at a button's press ... and you do need most of these in your life ; it was an incredible year for new music & reissues, with excellent work abound from the labels & artists with which we were lucky enough to be in league ...

i'm never one for playing favorites, but i'd like to single out the reissue of peter liechti's amazing documentary about voice crack, "kick that habit" on drag city (as well as his separately-issued roman signer film ; hadn't watched a dvd more than once in a long time, but these were on constant rotation around the house) ; of course bill orcutt's "a new way to pay old debts" on palilalia was a revelation ; the christina carter 2lp on root strata (seeing her @ the on land fest in september was one of the near-religious concert experiences of 2009) ; the reissue of the destroy all monsters "1974-1976" set reminded me just how incredibly prescient they were & the new vinyl issues of both charling nothing's "the psychedelic saxophone" & the sperm's "shh !" dragged some whispered-about but rarely heard gems out into the limelight ; stephen cornford's incredible sound-art single via the permanent gallery made me wonder how many of our long-term customers were secretly musical geniuses ; the kito mizukumi rouber lp on ultra eczema provided repeat "!!??!!" listening to our many visitors ; and it felt awfully good to be able to offer the spate of "originals" we sourced throughout the year (i.e. the daniel steven crafts & roberta settels lps) ...

geoff was key in bringing in the richard bone disc (going so far as to visit mr. bone at his rural rhode island estate to source our copies directly) ; he also wanted to mention that the james ferraro "last american hero" lp on olde english spelling bee was near the top of his list (ok, i'll admit ; mine too) ... and i know he'd never nominate one of his own records, but his split with christopher "c.f." forgues (as mark lord, geoff as morgan egg) was incredible, as was his expert-level tape edition of my own hallicrafters inc. music (i can nominate the edition, he can nominate the music ; that way neither of us is guilty of that egregious act of self-preservation) ...

bonne année & bon appétit ... -keith fullerton whitman (mms' pied-au-cochon) & geoff mullen (mms' sous chef)

airwaylive at lace” long playing record

  • live at lace (1) (20:35)

  • live at lace (2) (20:35)
april 2009 release ; lp reissue of the legendary “live at lace” concert, featuring the lafmssupergroupairway (joe & rick potts, tom recchion, chip chapman, dennis duck, vetza) ...

with it’s roots in a 1977 eponymous ep by joe potts (based around processes of vetza’s voice), airway had, by 1978, evolved into a fully fledged “noise orchestra” consisting of most of the lafms key players & hangers on ... for this concert (at the still-active los angeles conemporary exhibitions space) the 6-strong crew played an array of “traditional” instruments (drums, bass, mandolin, saxophone), the sum total of which was run through a device built by chip chapman that rendered the sound into a gritty flange of distortions, not unlike contemporary bit-reduction techniques (although assuredly done in the analog domain ; audio input as control voltage, ala moog’s recent “freqbox”) ...

listening to the chaos that ensues pretty much straight-out-the-gate, it’s easy to see how profound an effect this lp had not just on the burgeoning japanese noise scene (keiji haino himself even went so far as to travel to l.a. to track these guys down in 1982 - there’s a great psf disc of this collaboration that we’ll have ... some day) but on the 30+ years of countless noise-rock and freak-out acts that have eloped from greener pastures in the interim ...

easily one of the top 5historical noise” documents ; this “deluxe” edition comes as a full-color paste-on, with a veritable treasure-trove of reproductions (gig flyers, posters, manifestos, polaroids - see below) inside the sleeve ... highly recommended !!!

andré almurol’envol • ambitus” compact disc-recordable

  • l’envol (29:30)

  • ambitus (18:13)
... perfectly timed replication of the other (ref: “musiques expérimentales” ; issued 30 or so ‘pones back) great andre almuro lp, initially issued by the oft-cited boîte a musique (aka disques bam) imprint at the tail-end of the 1960s ...

almuro started out with pierre schaeffer, producing radioplays for the club d’essai in the late 40s before joining the grm in 1958 ... he proceeded to produce dark, chilling musique concrète backings to recitations of work(s) by authors such as jean genet & antonin artaud, but by the late 60s he had already begun working on even more sparse & creepy music, paring down the traditional sound-on-sound approach to focus on combinations of single & paired instruments, edited to mask their natural timbres & bathed in a virtual sea of reverb & tape echo to blur the assembly stage(s), yielding a remarkably prescient approach to sound construction that set him apart considerably from his peers ...

the two pieces here, “l’envol(or “the take-off” ; clocking in at a remarkable 29 minutes ; amazing they could fit this on an lp side back then !!!) & “ambitus” are nothing if not trademarks of almuro’s style ... along with the aforementioned “musiques expérimentales” we begin to get a clearer picture of this otherwise neglected composer’s contributions & inventions within the early musique concrète scene ...

mr p.c. has done a fine job w/ the run here, again including detail from the lp itself in the “gatefold” ...

the flight, the energy, or the dream which gives the impetus to the body, thrusts it upward, raises it. beginning of the ascent in and with the air. against it.

conflict of beings, of expression, a field of outrage: that of the arrow, of the askew skyward escape. refuge; nest of the eagle, place of rarefaction, crucible at the top. contact through the vacuum inhabited with the self. blooming ? anyway, the desire for a communication of exceptions.

confrontations. the brooms are already trajectory; birds: rending tensions of space; motions of trees : almost gyratory flights over any point of attraction; thistles, finally : area of waiting, of newly condensed reflexion. however, still too « vivid », suggestive. i sink under the burden of the vibrating aeolians; hence debauchery of ethereality, crystalline, « diaphanous opacity».

general repetition. decantation. suspension. tearing of the matter. appeals and exorcisms, so as to eradicate every hindrance. take off along every phrase, remove everything which might be contaminated in its turn by the impetus. litteraly breathed. reverse fall. fixity of the instant at this initial and decisive stage of the flight. dizziness.

period of indecision and stagnation. i waver, i pile up materials. fluttering of wings against the wind, stand- still, gliding. then at a stretch, the definitive start ; the whole trip at one go, - as usual. through a course however extremely anterior - of an extraordinary panorama, like on a negative proof.

hence: icarian mythical music sacralizing a flying buttress, : superman or caryatid.

ambitus notion of complete quartering, of painful and yet generating scores. «space encompassed between extreme values ». yes, still a little bit more of unreality in the very center of intricacy and compactness.

formerly, the desire to work on hand at once, really opposed materials, let's say : extraneous. i overcharge : a falsifying undulation where the abominable sinusoid might be vainquished; on the other side, a mess of synthetic strings, with too virtuous plectrums and bows. on the whole: wager of some trifle to test the poorness of sources ...

exil, an elementary month. schemes, inventory and solfeggio. i start again with an aim converging with the previous one, : every internal fluctuation, accent, flexional ending or alteration, recurrence will be erectile. that is able to set up for a privileged moment of a continous and total verticality. kinds of multicellular tropisms of the sound matter, or rather of the interstitial vacuum between the two confronting natures.

continuity in the flashing devastation of the opposites. a homogenous body is born of the disparity between causes. turgescence, unceasingly dying and resurrecting from the original principle: touch, contact, mutual embrace, merging, fainting. this owing of the lack of complementaries, and on the contrary exaltation of antagonisms. the identity is achieved in the midst of essential contradictions.

an expansion worked on the level of skeletal autonomies. to obtain the optimal tessitura of a fictitious instrument born of the very impenetrability of the poles. incandescent nucleus of opposite vibrations. the magnetic plexus in a desert of uncertainty.

contrary to what you might imagine, this isn’t a pure synth-noise blowout ; the pair delve into headier zones (including a long section that reminds me of that first philus sahkö 12” - listen to the sound-sample) - but yes, of course there’s some real full-on sand-blasting here, c/o the pair’s vcs3 / paia lineup ...

this one gets a little closer to harsh noise realms than the s/t debut, for the greater part these are room recordings of constantly flitting upper & extreme low-end wave-shapes - the architecture of the space(s) plays a large part in the overall sound (listen to the sound-sample ; the hook must have been absolutely buzzing from the rafters on down) ...

paul boisseletle robot” compact disc-recordable

  • le robot (2) (15:24)
... at long last, here’s the companion piece to the “symphone jaune • symphonie rougecreel pone from way back when ; paul boisselet’s masterful 1965 suite le robot” ...

... aside from having inarguably the best record cover of all time ::

... this is one hell of a rare title, originally issued by the societe francaise de productions phonographigues (same imprint as the aforementioned boisselet lp, along with the original edition of jacques lejeune’s “blanche neige” suite) ; in short :: a musique concrète holy grail if ever there were one ...

like “jaune / rouge” this is a mix of futurism-inspired chamber-ensemble writing, concrète noises (love the demonic cackling at the end of the piece ; listen to the tail of the sound-sample) and garbled tape-speed morass that pushes all of the perfunctory buttons, perching atop the creel pone series as one of the lynch-pin titles ...

paul boisselet

in the domain of sound, much terrain remains to be explored. between the red symphony (symphonie rouge 1944-49), the song of men (chant des hommes 1947-50) and the recent sonic realization of robot, a cinematic-choreograpic puzzle, almost 20 years have elapsed. despite the silence of the last ten years, those who believed in the star of paul boisselet are rejoicing. the robot is not only a success, it also makes a new path in the field of sound for our young explorers. and with good spirits... outstanding.

- jj canal

-- tempo is represented by the regular motion of a metronome.
-- space, by glissandos.
-- man, by the pulsations of a rhythmic life.
-- woman, by keyboard instruments and the full range of human emotion.
-- the composer gave the robot the role of champion of all sonic machinery

just as modern architecture, "that springs forth from the ground," and as contemporary sculpture is both "mobile and stabile," paul boisselet's robot humorously supports a climate within which we all try to survive.

- j.p. doering

with the robot we enter the domain of fantasy. like a mechanic, where the parts interlock, the composer produced music for robot whose elements fit together like a puzzle. p.b draws your attention to leitmotifs and allows your imagination to explore the exquisite point of the scene: listen to the record and hear your own history.

the robot cinematic-choreographic puzzle

(3) a 36-page 12” x 12 book(let) acting as the exhibition-catalogue for the “high fidelity” showing of artists’ records from the egidio marzona collection at the national museums in berlin, containing writings (in both german and english) by wolfgang brauneis, moritz wullen, peter-klaus schuster, and michael lailach, plus the “mureau” score, photos from the staging of the terry fox piece, and a mini “digest” version of a “broken music” style discography ...

lace heart
x2 lp

double lp reissue of a 2005 cd-r released on christina's own many breaths imprint. six love songs comprised of elliptical bell like guitar phrases, barely there, sometimes even coaxing silence, set behind the extended vowel sounds of voice. soft gentle performances here, like this whole record was cut very very late at night or in the early hours of the morning. an unhinged 'nowness' is pervasive in christina's work, and 'lace heart' is no exception. there is a very private feeling here, some kinda intimacy that just feels really rare. lovers of past, present & future all collapse into one. memories of smells, tastes & textures all channelled into wide open song. no one really does it like this.

three sides of music & and an etching of one of christina's drawings on the fourth side. red vinyl with maroon splatter. edition of 500.

anla courtisornitologia” one-sided long playing record

  • ornitologia (21:30)
december 2008 release ; single-sided lp with a 1992-93 piece by reynolsalananlacourtis ...

let’s see what’s in store ... first, there’s 4 minutes of subdued pitched-down guitar clank, after which a massed root-fifth line comes in & builds for the majority of the side (courtis’ take on “doom” ? perhaps ... listen to the sound-sample) before fading into silence, then into a short bit of wobbly modulated feedback ...

pressing is not the most ideal, but then again there’s only 105 of these suckers ...
8mm press release ::
8mm 032: anla courtis - ornitologia - 12" one sided vinyl

a talisman, a living mandala. recorded in buenos aires, 1992-93 (!) and now brought to life by the chants of birds, this is anla courtis 'ornitology', a poem about the secret forces of nature and the most sublime forms of communication hidden in the forest. earth, water, wind and fire the elements that are all living inside these three gems, starting with a spectral ballad, "quetro", and exploding into the second track, 'escua', 16 minutes of epic guitars flying over an endless sea of visions. the last track, 'tersina', is the final redemption, and it comes through as a primitive-electronic assault! pure magic.

140 grams vinyl, limited to 105 copies only, screenprinted artwork (by canedicoda), half of the covers come in yellow with green print, half in green with dark print.

october 2009 release ; wonderful collection of mid-period sound-art pieces from the logos foundation’s moniek darge (often mentioned alongside her partner-in-crime godfried willem-raes) - the first new issue of her work since the 1995 experimental intermedia (xi records)logos works” disc ...

... starting with the electronic drone & punctual, pointillist percussion of 1981’ssand(erupting into a terrifying fury of howls & screams just when you get in the “zone”) & continuing on through “stormfugle’s” low-end hiss & errant electronics, “fairy tale’s” vocal pips & scratchy violin ... even the relatively contemporaryturning wheel’s” in-transit interplay (which sounds remarkably like something komissar & mama would do, btw) it becomes clearer & clearer that ms. darge has been on the true path lo these past 30+ years, wading not in the traditional sound-art or electro-acoustic compositional waters, but inhabiting some nether-region grounded in happenings, self-built / experimental instrument culture, and site-specific performance scenarios that are squarely hers & hers alone ...

excellent, essential work & telling as the first non-graham lambkin / shadow ring-related release on graham’s young kye imprint (who promises a series of releases by moniek in the near-future ; joy !!!) ; highly recommended !!!

moniek darge soundies (selected work 1980-2001) (kye 05)

moniek darge has been active as a composer, violinist, performer and audio artist since the early 70s. she is most widely recognized as one half of the pioneering new music group logos duo alongside her partner godfried-willem raes. the logos duo, which operates under the umbrella of the logos foundation, have been celebrated both at home in their native gent, belgium and on the international stage. they have performed their work in countries as diverse as brazil, new zealand, japan and the us. however, moniek's solo work has been harder to locate, the last published collection being sounds of sacred places (igloo records, 1987).

soundies is the first in a series of releases from kye that aims to bring moniek's solo material before a wider audience. soundies contains the following work: sand (1980) - for two percussionists with tape (electronics) and one participant from the audience / stormfugle (1981) - for two performers, voice, tape (electronics and voice), slides, film, clarinet and violin / fairy tale (1983) - for vocals, violin and tape (koala sounds and dog-growling) / harpje (1995) - for harp samples and performance / caete (1997) - for soundscapes, live musical objects and duo / verbondenheid (1999) - for voices, turkish turtle and live musicians / turning wheel (2001) - for voice, live violin and soundscape.

may 2009 release ; always glad to be able to offer a new raymond dijkstra work here @ mms ... in this case, a suite of 10 1-minute pieces (scored for his now-familiar orchestra of pump-organ & screeching metals)separated by a lock groove and a blank (grooveless) space” ...

a spartan edition (just a printed sheet of recycled newspaper in a sleeve w/ the record) but the innate complexity of both the included music (as obfuscating as ever) & it’s presentation (each piece is an island, beginning & ending in silent locked grooves with no lead-in / lead-out to speak of ; manual needle placement is necessary to advance to each new segment) makes it worth all the while ... highly recommended !!!

april 2009 release ; long-awaited collection of obscure and unreleased pieces by texan electronic musician & composer danielj.d.emmanuel, known far & wide through his early-80s self-released “wizards” & “rain forest music” lps, repped as the missing link between terry riley’s 60s / 70s time-lag accumulator improvs and the 70s / 80s home-studio electronic music / new age revolution ...

this disc is rife with great material, much it on par with “wizards’” filtered-out emanations ... personally i’m drawn towards the two sequencer based tracks “7 note trance(listen to the sound-sample ; odd-time gets me every time) & the 22-minute “changeling(“persian surgery dervishes” recast with a slight motorik-chug) - but the more laminal pieces have a nice desert-sunrise feel to them that’s ultra-inviting, and the more out moments such as “whirlwind(9 minutes of rising bleep) are just icing on the cake ...

john tamm-buckle and michael ferrer have done a great job w/ the edition ; the disc housed in a gatefold cd sleeve, with four individual sheets offering some relevant iconography and notes from the composer himself ... highly recommended !!!

kvist 004: solid dawn
jd emmanuel

release date: april 2009
limited run of 500 on cd

collection of electronic works recorded between 1979 and 1982.

i was first introduced to jd emmanuel’s work two years ago through the re-release of his wizards lp, hailed as a transcendent blend of terry riley, the bbc radiophonic workshop, popul vuh and early kraftwerk. the bottom line for me is that it sounded damn good, in the way that a couple of records i buy every year do - it remains in rotation on the bedroom turntable. without going into too much depth, a conversation about the aforementioned lp led to contact with mr. emmanuel and the tracks that make up solid dawn, a compilation of tracks written between 1979-1982 and originally released in very limited quantities on cassette. these are not dusty old tracks dug up from someone’s basement, they are sparkling new tracks resurrected from the recesses of forgottenness.

basically, i am a seeker, someone who is always interested in learning more about my relationship to the “universe” and the “source of my being”.

a seeker has two tasks in their life-path, to be a student and a teacher.

it is sort of a metaphysical internet, ie, i take what i learn from my different teachers and become a teacher by sharing it with others.

anything i get involved in, whether it is spiritual, business management, human resources, music, etc., i do so to learn how to create a better relationship to the universe and all the beings that make it up
.

an impressively wide array of approaches, from clattering drum kit abuse, to segments of harsh noise, to company-week-lineage scrabbly improv, to the kinds of effected, arbitrary instrumental performance seen mainly in the “sound-art” sector (on a blind listen in a “listening room” context i would more likely guess this was something from the anton bruhin / alga marghen axis than anything contemporary - the cassette-master fidelity lends well to a certain timelessness) ...

december 2007 release ; first of two discs from xing-wu featuring percussionist / composer seijiro murayama (last seen in fine form w/ lionel marchetti on intransitive’s “hatali atsalei” set) ...

this one features murayama in improviser mode, alongside saxophonist jean-luc guionnet channeling centuries-old spirits at a buddhist temple ... the music, even at it’s most active (listen to the sound-sample) barely raises a whisper ; guionnet’s circularly-breathed notes trail off into the distance, as murayama’s counter-flail largely sticks to cymbal and floor-tom flourish ...

le bruit du toit,
cd 4-panel digipak

le bruit du toit is a rare meeting, and a recording which took place at a buddhist temple in mishima, between two stalwarts of musicseijiro murayama, founding figure of numerous seminal avant-rock outfits during the 80s/90s like fushitsusha (murayama was its original drummer) and anp (absolut null punkt) ; and jean-luc guionnet, already a veteran and a revered artist in the musical constellation of sound art/composition and improvised music.

a rare meeting, not because this was their first and only time playing together, but rare in the sense that this meeting was a culmination of a series of unprecedented events (mostly seemingly banal and mundane) and musical possibilities that occurred before and during that meeting. this document could be viewed as a portrayal of the very first time they had expressed themselves in a manner previously never explored and rendered conceivable between the two. sounds, approaches and possibilities never before coaxed from their instruments, not to mention constitutive of their overall artistry, have now and hitherto found life during this meeting and after.

le bruit du toit could not only begin here but invites its own possibilities.

  • :::: (17:18)
june 2009 release ; superb, creaking concrète studies from jim haynes ...

there’s been a spate of music concerned with “decay” over the past few years (especially from the harsh noise & power electronics sectors) ; yet little of it posit decay as anything less than a malevolent force (decomposition, erosion, etc ...) which is why jim’s take on it really stands out ; decay at the molecular level, almost imperceivable in real time but quite apparent in an exploded-view ...

the four pieces here involve field recordings (often made so far away from any given’s sound’s source that their room reflections and natural dispersion obliterate any trace of them) and subtle processing ; just enough to accentuate what’s already there - the gradual, organic change of chemistry over time ...

highly recommended !!!

int032 jim haynessever cd

it gives me great pleasure to present sever, the third solo album by san francisco-based composer jim haynes, whose singular music evades simple attempts to describe it. the process of decaying and wearing down materials is implied in sever; its passages of rough clang and cyclic scraping metal seem implacably tangible, as if one is witnessing time-lapsed erosion in action. for me, sever conjures images of oncoming storms, abandoned industrial sites, huge empty warehouses, creaking glass, ships rocking in a port, the middle of the ocean far from land. sever is an engaging album of evocative, highly visual drone music made up of layers upon organic layers that are in constant motion, and yet seem somehow still.

jim haynes has exhibited at westspace (melbourne, australia), diapason (new york), jack straw productions (seattle), and works (san jose), eyedrum (atlanta). he has collaborated with loren chasse (as the duo coelacanth), keith evans, steve stapleton (nurse with wound), and irr.app.(ext.). he runs the acclaimed helen scarsdale label, and works as the editorial director for 23five, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and increased awareness of sound arts within the public arena. he has written extensively on sound art, noise culture, minimalism, and general music experimentation for the wire, the san francisco bay guardian, metro pulse, the sound projector, and chunklet.

int033 kommissar hjuler & mama bärasylum lunaticum cd

intimate, absurd, feral and aggressive in its homemade weirdness, the music of kommissar hjuler & mama bär has been a well kept secret for too long. hjuler & bär have self published their dada esque sound poetry experiments on small edition lathe cut lps, tapes, and cdrs for years, usually adorning them with elaborate junk sculptures and paintings. intransitive is proud to collect their best recordings so far onto a single, widely available cd so that anyone can hear the music without making a major financial investment.

the husband and wife duo uses deceptively simple means – typically just their voices, a cassette tape recorder and a microphone – to create astonishing suburban dramas that are somehow both sweetly charming and staggeringly psychotic, sometimes at the same time. join kommissar hjuler and mama bär as they perform acts of banal heroics, like exploring the basement... taking their son for a bicycle ride... walking with a red shirt into a field of cattle... pondering reforms made to the danish police system... all viewed through the unhinged lens.

kommissar hjuler & mama bär are painters, sculptors, film makers, and musicians based in flensberg, germany, near the danish border. their artwork has been exhibited in galleries and at festivals around the world. they collaborated with like minded artists such as thurston moore, arnulf meifert, john weise, runzelstirn & gurgelstock, jan iwers, and af ursin, among many others.

asylum lunaticum is not just another name or title, it's an almost too harmless a description of the family hjuler/bar. over decades, kommisar hjuler provided me with his sick but mind blowing art. so rare their works are, it's truly time to dig 'em out and show the world! this cd shall do so.

lethecatastrophe point #5” compact disc

  • catastrophe point #5 (2) (22:00)
october 2009 release ; a strikingly rich recording of sound-events transpiring “at no 20 warehouse [disused grain warehouse in front of nagoya sea port]” ; triggered/channeled & documented by kiyoharu kuwayama ...

yoshi wada’s “lament” and/or toshiya tsunoda’s recent work for ensembles are both great reference points here ; kuwayama’s use of naturally-occurring ambiance (rain falling through the ceiling) & held tones (amplified through what sounds like just a massive acoustic space) work beautifully in painting a vivid sonic picture, with his “performances” on the assorted site-specific detritus merely augmenting the ongoing tapestry of automatically unfolding sound-events ... highly recommended !!!
intransitive press release ::

int034 lethe catastrophe point #5 cd

catastrophe point #5 is the latest in kuwayama kiyoharu
s signature series of compositions that explore the charged, mysterious atmosphere of disused industrial sites. for this album, lethe turns his attention to an abandoned warehouse by a pier in his hometown of nagoya, japan, using objects discovered in situ to perform a ritual of sonic resurrection. he brings a dead space back to life, giving it a voice and allowing it to speak. metal chains, sheet metal, broken machinery, and factory debris are bowed, struck, and dragged across the concrete floors of the massive hall, reverberating and responding as kuwayama and his microphones scuttle across the desolate terrain. growling cello and unstable horns underscore the torrents of percussive clatter. catastrophe point #5 is a haunting album of volatile, malevolent ambiance.

kiyoharu kuwayama began working with sound in the late 1980s, using half-scale violin, cello, and found junk objects in the group minotaure. in 1999, he and violinist rina kijima formed the improvisational acoustic duo kuwayama-kijima to bring their instruments outdoors and perform in environments with unique acoustic properties, notably underneath a highway overpass and in a construction site. between 1999 and 2003, kuwayama organized the five-day-long lethe.voice.festival in an unused grain warehouse.

lethe’s previous release on intransitive was tsurumai, a stellar collaborative cd with dutch noise legends kapotte muziek. he has also appeared on albums with bassist matt heyner (malkuth, cold bleak heat, no-neck blues band), jonathan coleclough, hidekai shimada (agencement), carter thornton (enos slaughter, izititiz), kiyoshi mizutani, and campbell kneale (birchville cat motel).

for fans of christoph heemann, surface of the earth, the new blockaders, z’ev, or organum.

in this 1995 film, we’re taken around the world in pursuit of venerable “action sculptorroman signer (first seen maneuvering a helicopter flight simulator in the film’s opening sequence, then crashing a remote controlled one into an abandoned hotel) ; the film in shot in the same style as “kick(alternatingly grainy color / black & white shots dwell on the subject matter long enough for the subtleties to be noticed) & the whole film has a certain meditative flair (even as, repeatedly, signer’s wool hat is tied to a model rocket & launched into space) ...

roman signer: the buster keaton of art

roman signer has had many trades. he’s worked in a pressure cooker factory, as a draftsman, a security guard, forklift driver, a water measurement assistant, and my favorite, in a polyester factory. it wasn’t until 1972 that he saved up enough money to get a studio and start making art. from this biographical account, it’s hard not to see how signer’s instruments have developed directly from his life experiences. since 1973 roman signer has been in over 50 one-man exhibits and around 100 joint exhibitions. for the past few years his artistic successes have enabled him to do without part-time jobs.

signers suitcase (aka signers koffer) is a kind of road movie across europe — from the swiss alps to eastern poland, from stromboli to iceland. immersing yourself, letting yourself be infected, then traveling on. with his deadpanned gags, signer gives a humorous twist to the concept of cause and effect and to the traditional scientific method of experimentation and discovery, taking on the self-evidence of scientific logic as an artistic challenge.

filmmaker peter liechti’s improvisational response frames signer’s visual humor with equally dry relish. a wonderfully diverting road trip, with roman signer leading the way.

seven pieces, each separated by a different quality of “silence” ; the tying bond here is the use of both ethnic folk music (specifically field & location recordings of vocal ululation & almost sound-poetry lineage glottal activities) ... at any given point there are at least two or three elements working in a dissonant unison, causing a pervasive sense of displacement that runs through the album’s core ...

int014 lionel marchettiknud un nom de serpent (le cercle des entrailles) cd

back by popular demand! lionel marchetti's classic album of harrowing tape music from 1999, knud un nom de serpent (le cercle des entrailles), was published by intransitive in 1999, quickly sold out, and remains the most requested title to be resurrected from our back catalog. we're thrilled to make knud available again, now with a striking new cover design and an appreciative essay by bhob rainey ( nmperign , the bsc ).

the gripping drama of knud un nom de serpent illustrates marchetti's idea of popular music as shamanic ritual, a gateway to ecstatic altered states. armed with fierce wit and a razor blade, he smashes together sounds from all over the world into a hallucinatory cyclone of jamaican reggae, french chanson, american avant garde vocalists, thai pop songs, nature recordings, spoken text, and more. the result is a chilling work of furious, obliquely narrative tape collage and tense, frightening scenes. as marchetti explained to the wire magazine, "i've always been interested in the idea of the medicine man. someone who by sheer force of imagination transports you into another world, part artist, part healer. maybe that's what a composer is."

lionel marchetti (france, 1967) is a self taught composer of musique concrète. he has built his own recording studio, and has composed in the groupe de recherches musicales in paris since 1993. marchetti also performs improvised music with microphones and loudspeakers as a duo with jérôme noetinger, as part of the group quintetavant , and with the collective le cube , which performs live music and interactive film. marchetti's book la musique concrète de michel chion was published by éditions metamkine in 1998.

dispositif: canal saint-martin
cd 4-panel digipak.

xing-wu’s 3rd release, dispositif: canal saint-martin, has well-celebrated french sound artist/composer, eric cordier in collaboration with fellow countryman emmanuel mieville. the frontipiece of this release is the primary track itself, which was performed live and composed in realtime during a concert at the centre d’animation jemmapes, paris. marshalling well over 30 microphones as a sonic capture and repository of this parisian cultural site, cordier and mieville transform the space and its environs into an organic vestibule of aurality and sounds. but perhaps more importantly and exactly, both these artisans of sound were able to produce and invoke an event for listening — to draw us closer to the act of listening and also, to portray listening as it relates to everything else around, culturally and experientially.

dispositif constitutes part of, and continues in, a long line of on-site realisations of what cordier conceptually regards as a vernacular device — a term which was mainly, and first, used to describe his long-standing but now defunct project, with eric la casa and jean-luc guionnet, called afflux. briefly, a vernacular device intersects and traverses methodologies and approaches commonly associated with the fields of tape music/electroacoustic, improvisation and field recording or phonography. in more concrete terms, it is the transposition of the intricacies and complexities of studio work onto a site specific context in order to unearth and shape the sonic character of the contextual site itself.

aside from the primary track of the live performance, two more tracks complete this releasedispositions en rotonde and le centre d’animation” which are remixes of the primary piece constructed respectively by mieville and cordier.

july 2009 release ; frankly mammoth 12-tapebible” of live recordings from matt valentine & erika elder, recorded over the past 7-odd years by the duo, in cahoots with pretty much a who’s who from their extended orbit / family / genealogy / lineage :: tim barnes, samara lubelski, willie lane, nemo bidstrup, tom carter, j. mascis, sloow bart, jeremywoodsearl, chris corsano, and many others ...

the whole thing is presented in an “audiobook” style fold-out vinyl case ; each tape is silk-screened with the relevant dates / info, and there’s a four-page legend explaining who played on what, where it was recorded, and who by ... entirely impressive both as a group effort / hug from the band to / from their “taper’s pit” and as a documentary of the pair’s musical evolution ... highly recommended !!!

mv & ee - road trips 12 x cassette box set
blackest rainbow/alt.vinyl

limited to 250 copies. pro-dubbed cassettes in presentation case.

the box set documents the mv & ee live experience in various incarnations between 2002 and 2009. the music is entirely unreleased material (with the exception of guitar barn featuring j mascis and tom carter, which was issued as a bootleg cdr in the heroine style, but was actually unofficial). highlights include a 2002 mv & ee medicine show performance, the guitar barn jam with j mascis and tom carter, a new band, mv & ee with the wolfpack, a recent set with jeremy earl of woods, as well as classic bummer road and golden road jams.

the box set will be presented chronologically and culminates in a pete's pix vol. 2 featuring 7 tracks from various dates mainly in the uk (including tracks from the thurston moore curated atp in 2006, and dylan nyoukis' 2006 colour out of space fest - both of which feature chris corsano).

october 2009 release ; ... was surprised to learn that, after a decade of recorded music (ranging from their selektion-label set, to two “live” discs on twisted village, to their american tapes “cover” of “salt peanuts”) that this, effectively bhob rainey & greg kelley’s swan-song (bhob up & moved to new orleans a few months back) also does double-duty as their debutstudio” album ...

there’s a bit of dissent as to who birthed the contemporary “reductionism” movement in improvised music ; that’s ultimately neither here nor there, save for the fact that these guys were my personal entry-point into the spectrum of near-silent, gestural improv ... their concerts here in town over the years have certainly forced me to re-think how to listen to music ; the exhilaration not only of the micro-volumes at which they play (far more terrifying than any jet-engine noise or rock/metal concerts i’ve been to ; even a stray cough or shuffle could be many decibels-fold above their playing, causing a near-complete inversion of performer-audience relations) but also the clean break from idiomatic “free improv” and/or “modern classical” modes is always palpable ...

the language they’ve jointly developed over the years, comprised both of modern-composition-lineageextended techniques” and timbres lifted straight from early electronic music, is unquestionably theirs & theirs alone (despite the hordes of acolytes and straight biters) ; here they finally display it all in impeccably-captured detail in an anechoic chamber-like setting ... frankly bhob’s knee-muted multiphonics & greg’s trumpet-barrel scrapings have never sounded better, and the interplay between the two has, after so many years spent honing their collective craft, reached a third-mind zenith, resulting in an uncanny amount of “happy accident” style moments across the album’s sixsong-length” pieces ...

this intransitive releases comes as a high-detail digipack, coated in a set of bee close-ups (by irene moon, no less) that perfectly articulate the music’s often microscopic inflections ... improv album of the year, hands down ; highly recommended !!!

int035 nmperign ommatidia cd

nmperign are one of the most celebrated and influential bands in contemporary improvised music. yet surprisingly, more than a decade after their debut, greg kelley (trumpet) and bhob rainey (soprano sax) have never recorded a studio album as an unaccompanied duo … until now!

the music is spare and peerlessly inventive as always, but the mood remains light and joyful, with a subtle undercurrent of absurd humor. while improvised music can sometimes seem airless and precious, ommatidia opens the window on a sunny afternoon… the album’s gusts of breath, percussive splatter, and controlled explosions form six succinct pieces that feel alive and vital, while still speaking in nmperign’s utterly unique sonic language. a perfect way in for newcomers and a revelation for long-time fans, ommatidia is the essential nmperign.

previous nmperign albums have employed guest musicians – notably close collaborator and tape loop saboteur jason lescalleet, but also luminaries such as gunter mueller, axel doerner, andrea neumann, and burkhard beins – and subversive or dodgy recording techniques; their 2 x lp on siwa was recorded entirely to micro-cassette and cassette walkman, while an early cd on selektion was edited from live mini-disc recordings. intransitive is proud to present the nmperign album that fans have been waiting for: the core duo, beautifully recorded in an actual studio with excellent microphones.

when not making nmperign music, greg kelley performs with the aggressively psychedelic noise unit heathen shame (along with wayne rogers & kate village of major stars), minimalist chamber group the undr quartet, and raucous rock band life partners. rainey regularly tours with folk/pop duo damon & naomi and leads the bsc, an eight-piece electro-acoustic improvising ensemble. they live in boston and new orleans, respectively.

limited edition cd comes in full-color digipack designed by mike shiflet.orded in an actual studio with excellent microphones.

oneohtrix point neverzones without people” long playing record

  • computer vision
  • format & journey north
  • zones without people

  • learning to control myself
  • disconnecting entirely
  • emil cioran
  • hyperdawn
august 2009 release ; gotta hand it to danoneohtrix point neverlopatin (pronunciations vary from “one oh tricks” to “on eo tricks”) - after a pretty damn prolific year thusfar, he’s stilling turning in a-grade work ...

case in point ; this, only his secondproperfull-length (discounting the scores of regional, tape-only releases) ; while there are of course many of the lovely, auto-arpeggiated / gear-changing tunes (at which dan excels) to be found here, there are just as many detours into detuned, cyborg-nightmare wastelands (the first track on the second side quickly descends into a distorted morass of cracked portamento, the telling “emil cioran” starts with a straight machine-music pulse before yielding a fine vapor of harmonizing drone cloudage - listen to the sound-sample) ...

dan’s at the top of his game right now ; i honestly can’t see a near-future in which i won’t be looking forward to each new electronic missive ... highly recommended !!!

arbor115 oneohtrix point never - "zones without people" lp

daniel lopatin’s oneohtrix point never represents a rift in time; an isolationist expedition into the archaeology of sound, notably the analog polysynth as a means of organic creation. zones without people is the second record in the opn trilogy; acting as a bridge between the drifting, alien compositions of betrayed in the octagon and a music more rooted in melody and introspective nostalgia as a search for self. an exercise in in between-ness: reconciling noise and melodicism, the stasis of drone and the spasomadic nature of concret, the historical narrative of 70s kraut synth music and 80s techno. arpeggios and sequencers play a key role in this amalgamation, as these forms of repetition create an attachment to a certain sentiment neither human nor machine. the record reflects this transformation; the a side has distinct emotional flourishes, while the majority of the b side seems to be overtaken in cold, mechanized melodies (like attempts at teaching a machine to feel). the final track hyperdawn is a solution to these two disparate modes of interpreting stimuli: a pure union of veins and patch cables.
