better ever than never, i always say ...

of the 1,330 new-to-stock titles received throughout 2009, the listings below represent the best-of-the-best ; the titles that we can recommend uncategorically to anyone with even a passing interest in experimental & electronic sound ... or at least the best of the titles that we still have in stock !!!

... and therein lies the stumbling block that has kept this list at bay for the past 6 months ; do we represent every "limited to 100" title that we loved & distributed only for a blip before it instantly sold out only to canonize them and / or add to their aftermarket value, or do we adhere to our long-standing "everything on the site is in print, in stock, and available" modus ? ultimately we decided to go with the latter ; everything below can be yours at a button's press ... and you do need most of these in your life ; it was an incredible year for new music & reissues, with excellent work abound from the labels & artists with which we were lucky enough to be in league ...

i'm never one for playing favorites, but i'd like to single out the reissue of peter liechti's amazing documentary about voice crack, "kick that habit" on drag city (as well as his separately-issued roman signer film ; hadn't watched a dvd more than once in a long time, but these were on constant rotation around the house) ; of course bill orcutt's "a new way to pay old debts" on palilalia was a revelation ; the christina carter 2lp on root strata (seeing her @ the on land fest in september was one of the near-religious concert experiences of 2009) ; the reissue of the destroy all monsters "1974-1976" set reminded me just how incredibly prescient they were & the new vinyl issues of both charling nothing's "the psychedelic saxophone" & the sperm's "shh !" dragged some whispered-about but rarely heard gems out into the limelight ; stephen cornford's incredible sound-art single via the permanent gallery made me wonder how many of our long-term customers were secretly musical geniuses ; the kito mizukumi rouber lp on ultra eczema provided repeat "!!??!!" listening to our many visitors ; and it felt awfully good to be able to offer the spate of "originals" we sourced throughout the year (i.e. the daniel steven crafts & roberta settels lps) ...

geoff was key in bringing in the richard bone disc (going so far as to visit mr. bone at his rural rhode island estate to source our copies directly) ; he also wanted to mention that the james ferraro "last american hero" lp on olde english spelling bee was near the top of his list (ok, i'll admit ; mine too) ... and i know he'd never nominate one of his own records, but his split with christopher "c.f." forgues (as mark lord, geoff as morgan egg) was incredible, as was his expert-level tape edition of my own hallicrafters inc. music (i can nominate the edition, he can nominate the music ; that way neither of us is guilty of that egregious act of self-preservation) ...

bonne année & bon appétit ... -keith fullerton whitman (mms' pied-au-cochon) & geoff mullen (mms' sous chef)

  • spectral vision (18:14)
  • live on romaine 1996 (27:20)
  • astral fight (31:50)

  • live in tokyo 2002 (31:46)
june 2005 release ; double-disc set (in a metal box, no less) covering the first round of collaborations & live recordings by the duo of hiroshiastrohasegawa (of c.c.c.c. fame) and damionspeculum fightromero, ranging from their debut in japan during summer 1995 through a joint tokyo concert, summer 2002 ...

contrary to what you might imagine, this isn’t a pure synth-noise blowout ; the pair delve into headier zones (including a long section that reminds me of that first philus sahkö 12” - listen to the sound-sample) - but yes, of course there’s some real full-on sand-blasting here, c/o the pair’s vcs3 / paia lineup ...

as above, these copies come directly from damion’s stash ; as such mms can off such an attractive price on this classic set ...

june 2008 release ; triple-disc set (in a lovely double-wide jewel case) offering the complete recordings made by damion romero & hiroshi hasegawa during their march 2006 jaunt from los angeles out east to brooklyn (by way of san francisco / oakland) for the no-fun fest ...

this one gets a little closer to harsh noise realms than the s/t debut, for the greater part these are room recordings of constantly flitting upper & extreme low-end wave-shapes - the architecture of the space(s) plays a large part in the overall sound (listen to the sound-sample ; the hook must have been absolutely buzzing from the rafters on down) ...

a totemic set, no doubt ; almost too much to take in all at once !!! mms’ copies come directly from damion’s “merch table” bin, as such i can put this out at an extremely reasonable price ... highly recommended !!!

lace heart
x2 lp

double lp reissue of a 2005 cd-r released on christina's own many breaths imprint. six love songs comprised of elliptical bell like guitar phrases, barely there, sometimes even coaxing silence, set behind the extended vowel sounds of voice. soft gentle performances here, like this whole record was cut very very late at night or in the early hours of the morning. an unhinged 'nowness' is pervasive in christina's work, and 'lace heart' is no exception. there is a very private feeling here, some kinda intimacy that just feels really rare. lovers of past, present & future all collapse into one. memories of smells, tastes & textures all channelled into wide open song. no one really does it like this.

three sides of music & and an etching of one of christina's drawings on the fourth side. red vinyl with maroon splatter. edition of 500.

a spartan edition (just a printed sheet of recycled newspaper in a sleeve w/ the record) but the innate complexity of both the included music (as obfuscating as ever) & it’s presentation (each piece is an island, beginning & ending in silent locked grooves with no lead-in / lead-out to speak of ; manual needle placement is necessary to advance to each new segment) makes it worth all the while ... highly recommended !!!

an impressively wide array of approaches, from clattering drum kit abuse, to segments of harsh noise, to company-week-lineage scrabbly improv, to the kinds of effected, arbitrary instrumental performance seen mainly in the “sound-art” sector (on a blind listen in a “listening room” context i would more likely guess this was something from the anton bruhin / alga marghen axis than anything contemporary - the cassette-master fidelity lends well to a certain timelessness) ...

jim haynessever” compact disc

  • : (18:38)
  • :: (6:24)
  • ::: (9:37)
  • :::: (17:18)
june 2009 release ; superb, creaking concrète studies from jim haynes ...

there’s been a spate of music concerned with “decay” over the past few years (especially from the harsh noise & power electronics sectors) ; yet little of it posit decay as anything less than a malevolent force (decomposition, erosion, etc ...) which is why jim’s take on it really stands out ; decay at the molecular level, almost imperceivable in real time but quite apparent in an exploded-view ...

the four pieces here involve field recordings (often made so far away from any given’s sound’s source that their room reflections and natural dispersion obliterate any trace of them) and subtle processing ; just enough to accentuate what’s already there - the gradual, organic change of chemistry over time ...

highly recommended !!!

int032 jim haynessever cd

it gives me great pleasure to present sever, the third solo album by san francisco-based composer jim haynes, whose singular music evades simple attempts to describe it. the process of decaying and wearing down materials is implied in sever; its passages of rough clang and cyclic scraping metal seem implacably tangible, as if one is witnessing time-lapsed erosion in action. for me, sever conjures images of oncoming storms, abandoned industrial sites, huge empty warehouses, creaking glass, ships rocking in a port, the middle of the ocean far from land. sever is an engaging album of evocative, highly visual drone music made up of layers upon organic layers that are in constant motion, and yet seem somehow still.

jim haynes has exhibited at westspace (melbourne, australia), diapason (new york), jack straw productions (seattle), and works (san jose), eyedrum (atlanta). he has collaborated with loren chasse (as the duo coelacanth), keith evans, steve stapleton (nurse with wound), and irr.app.(ext.). he runs the acclaimed helen scarsdale label, and works as the editorial director for 23five, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and increased awareness of sound arts within the public arena. he has written extensively on sound art, noise culture, minimalism, and general music experimentation for the wire, the san francisco bay guardian, metro pulse, the sound projector, and chunklet.

int033 kommissar hjuler & mama bärasylum lunaticum cd

intimate, absurd, feral and aggressive in its homemade weirdness, the music of kommissar hjuler & mama bär has been a well kept secret for too long. hjuler & bär have self published their dada esque sound poetry experiments on small edition lathe cut lps, tapes, and cdrs for years, usually adorning them with elaborate junk sculptures and paintings. intransitive is proud to collect their best recordings so far onto a single, widely available cd so that anyone can hear the music without making a major financial investment.

the husband and wife duo uses deceptively simple means – typically just their voices, a cassette tape recorder and a microphone – to create astonishing suburban dramas that are somehow both sweetly charming and staggeringly psychotic, sometimes at the same time. join kommissar hjuler and mama bär as they perform acts of banal heroics, like exploring the basement... taking their son for a bicycle ride... walking with a red shirt into a field of cattle... pondering reforms made to the danish police system... all viewed through the unhinged lens.

kommissar hjuler & mama bär are painters, sculptors, film makers, and musicians based in flensberg, germany, near the danish border. their artwork has been exhibited in galleries and at festivals around the world. they collaborated with like minded artists such as thurston moore, arnulf meifert, john weise, runzelstirn & gurgelstock, jan iwers, and af ursin, among many others.

asylum lunaticum is not just another name or title, it's an almost too harmless a description of the family hjuler/bar. over decades, kommisar hjuler provided me with his sick but mind blowing art. so rare their works are, it's truly time to dig 'em out and show the world! this cd shall do so.

lethecatastrophe point #5” compact disc

  • catastrophe point #5 (1) (22:10)
  • catastrophe point #5 (2) (22:00)
october 2009 release ; a strikingly rich recording of sound-events transpiring “at no 20 warehouse [disused grain warehouse in front of nagoya sea port]” ; triggered/channeled & documented by kiyoharu kuwayama ...

yoshi wada’s “lament” and/or toshiya tsunoda’s recent work for ensembles are both great reference points here ; kuwayama’s use of naturally-occurring ambiance (rain falling through the ceiling) & held tones (amplified through what sounds like just a massive acoustic space) work beautifully in painting a vivid sonic picture, with his “performances” on the assorted site-specific detritus merely augmenting the ongoing tapestry of automatically unfolding sound-events ... highly recommended !!!
intransitive press release ::

int034 lethe catastrophe point #5 cd

catastrophe point #5 is the latest in kuwayama kiyoharu
s signature series of compositions that explore the charged, mysterious atmosphere of disused industrial sites. for this album, lethe turns his attention to an abandoned warehouse by a pier in his hometown of nagoya, japan, using objects discovered in situ to perform a ritual of sonic resurrection. he brings a dead space back to life, giving it a voice and allowing it to speak. metal chains, sheet metal, broken machinery, and factory debris are bowed, struck, and dragged across the concrete floors of the massive hall, reverberating and responding as kuwayama and his microphones scuttle across the desolate terrain. growling cello and unstable horns underscore the torrents of percussive clatter. catastrophe point #5 is a haunting album of volatile, malevolent ambiance.

kiyoharu kuwayama began working with sound in the late 1980s, using half-scale violin, cello, and found junk objects in the group minotaure. in 1999, he and violinist rina kijima formed the improvisational acoustic duo kuwayama-kijima to bring their instruments outdoors and perform in environments with unique acoustic properties, notably underneath a highway overpass and in a construction site. between 1999 and 2003, kuwayama organized the five-day-long lethe.voice.festival in an unused grain warehouse.

lethe’s previous release on intransitive was tsurumai, a stellar collaborative cd with dutch noise legends kapotte muziek. he has also appeared on albums with bassist matt heyner (malkuth, cold bleak heat, no-neck blues band), jonathan coleclough, hidekai shimada (agencement), carter thornton (enos slaughter, izititiz), kiyoshi mizutani, and campbell kneale (birchville cat motel).

for fans of christoph heemann, surface of the earth, the new blockaders, z’ev, or organum.

roman signer: the buster keaton of art

roman signer has had many trades. he’s worked in a pressure cooker factory, as a draftsman, a security guard, forklift driver, a water measurement assistant, and my favorite, in a polyester factory. it wasn’t until 1972 that he saved up enough money to get a studio and start making art. from this biographical account, it’s hard not to see how signer’s instruments have developed directly from his life experiences. since 1973 roman signer has been in over 50 one-man exhibits and around 100 joint exhibitions. for the past few years his artistic successes have enabled him to do without part-time jobs.

signers suitcase (aka signers koffer) is a kind of road movie across europe — from the swiss alps to eastern poland, from stromboli to iceland. immersing yourself, letting yourself be infected, then traveling on. with his deadpanned gags, signer gives a humorous twist to the concept of cause and effect and to the traditional scientific method of experimentation and discovery, taking on the self-evidence of scientific logic as an artistic challenge.

filmmaker peter liechti’s improvisational response frames signer’s visual humor with equally dry relish. a wonderfully diverting road trip, with roman signer leading the way.

seven pieces, each separated by a different quality of “silence” ; the tying bond here is the use of both ethnic folk music (specifically field & location recordings of vocal ululation & almost sound-poetry lineage glottal activities) ... at any given point there are at least two or three elements working in a dissonant unison, causing a pervasive sense of displacement that runs through the album’s core ...

back by popular demand! lionel marchetti's classic album of harrowing tape music from 1999, knud un nom de serpent (le cercle des entrailles), was published by intransitive in 1999, quickly sold out, and remains the most requested title to be resurrected from our back catalog. we're thrilled to make knud available again, now with a striking new cover design and an appreciative essay by bhob rainey ( nmperign , the bsc ).

the gripping drama of knud un nom de serpent illustrates marchetti's idea of popular music as shamanic ritual, a gateway to ecstatic altered states. armed with fierce wit and a razor blade, he smashes together sounds from all over the world into a hallucinatory cyclone of jamaican reggae, french chanson, american avant garde vocalists, thai pop songs, nature recordings, spoken text, and more. the result is a chilling work of furious, obliquely narrative tape collage and tense, frightening scenes. as marchetti explained to the wire magazine, "i've always been interested in the idea of the medicine man. someone who by sheer force of imagination transports you into another world, part artist, part healer. maybe that's what a composer is."

lionel marchetti (france, 1967) is a self taught composer of musique concrète. he has built his own recording studio, and has composed in the groupe de recherches musicales in paris since 1993. marchetti also performs improvised music with microphones and loudspeakers as a duo with jérôme noetinger, as part of the group quintetavant , and with the collective le cube , which performs live music and interactive film. marchetti's book la musique concrète de michel chion was published by éditions metamkine in 1998.

january 2009 release ; first in a batch of three tapes this month from justin meyerstone filth ...

it’s worth noting that these are possibly the most “professional” tapes that have crossed my folding iceberg in a while ; each have “pro printed” shells (white with black silkscreened text/design) with long fold-out letter-pressed j-cards ... in my mind, these releases go a long way towards legitimizing the cassette as an archival “art” format ...

on the tape ; justin’s rumination(s) on “pressure,” ranging from the titular track’s woozy, sub-audible rumble through the painful “through zerofeedback clusters of “compression” to the minute throbbing growl of “pushing(listen to the sound-sample) ...

  • dispositif: canal saint-martin (37:43)
  • disposition en rotondes (remix mieville) (12:38)
  • le centre d'animation (remix cordier) (14:12)
september 2007 release ; a site-specific work by eric cordier & emmanuel mieville, “performed live and composed in realtime during a concert at the centre d’animation jemmapes (paris, france)” ...

the 37-minute live piece (itself something something of a wonder, in terms of how exactly such a tightly controlled bit of live concrète was pulled from thin air) is augmented by later, studio re-workings by each respective composer/performer ...
xing-wu press release ::
xw5003cd emmanuel mieville & eric cordier
dispositif: canal saint-martin
cd 4-panel digipak.

xing-wu’s 3rd release, dispositif: canal saint-martin, has well-celebrated french sound artist/composer, eric cordier in collaboration with fellow countryman emmanuel mieville. the frontipiece of this release is the primary track itself, which was performed live and composed in realtime during a concert at the centre d’animation jemmapes, paris. marshalling well over 30 microphones as a sonic capture and repository of this parisian cultural site, cordier and mieville transform the space and its environs into an organic vestibule of aurality and sounds. but perhaps more importantly and exactly, both these artisans of sound were able to produce and invoke an event for listening — to draw us closer to the act of listening and also, to portray listening as it relates to everything else around, culturally and experientially.

dispositif constitutes part of, and continues in, a long line of on-site realisations of what cordier conceptually regards as a vernacular device — a term which was mainly, and first, used to describe his long-standing but now defunct project, with eric la casa and jean-luc guionnet, called afflux. briefly, a vernacular device intersects and traverses methodologies and approaches commonly associated with the fields of tape music/electroacoustic, improvisation and field recording or phonography. in more concrete terms, it is the transposition of the intricacies and complexities of studio work onto a site specific context in order to unearth and shape the sonic character of the contextual site itself.

aside from the primary track of the live performance, two more tracks complete this releasedispositions en rotonde and le centre d’animation” which are remixes of the primary piece constructed respectively by mieville and cordier.

the box set will be presented chronologically and culminates in a pete's pix vol. 2 featuring 7 tracks from various dates mainly in the uk (including tracks from the thurston moore curated atp in 2006, and dylan nyoukis' 2006 colour out of space fest - both of which feature chris corsano).

october 2009 release ; ... was surprised to learn that, after a decade of recorded music (ranging from their selektion-label set, to two “live” discs on twisted village, to their american tapes “cover” of “salt peanuts”) that this, effectively bhob rainey & greg kelley’s swan-song (bhob up & moved to new orleans a few months back) also does double-duty as their debutstudio” album ...

there’s a bit of dissent as to who birthed the contemporary “reductionism” movement in improvised music ; that’s ultimately neither here nor there, save for the fact that these guys were my personal entry-point into the spectrum of near-silent, gestural improv ... their concerts here in town over the years have certainly forced me to re-think how to listen to music ; the exhilaration not only of the micro-volumes at which they play (far more terrifying than any jet-engine noise or rock/metal concerts i’ve been to ; even a stray cough or shuffle could be many decibels-fold above their playing, causing a near-complete inversion of performer-audience relations) but also the clean break from idiomatic “free improv” and/or “modern classical” modes is always palpable ...

the language they’ve jointly developed over the years, comprised both of modern-composition-lineageextended techniques” and timbres lifted straight from early electronic music, is unquestionably theirs & theirs alone (despite the hordes of acolytes and straight biters) ; here they finally display it all in impeccably-captured detail in an anechoic chamber-like setting ... frankly bhob’s knee-muted multiphonics & greg’s trumpet-barrel scrapings have never sounded better, and the interplay between the two has, after so many years spent honing their collective craft, reached a third-mind zenith, resulting in an uncanny amount of “happy accident” style moments across the album’s sixsong-length” pieces ...

this intransitive releases comes as a high-detail digipack, coated in a set of bee close-ups (by irene moon, no less) that perfectly articulate the music’s often microscopic inflections ... improv album of the year, hands down ; highly recommended !!!

int035 nmperign ommatidia cd

nmperign are one of the most celebrated and influential bands in contemporary improvised music. yet surprisingly, more than a decade after their debut, greg kelley (trumpet) and bhob rainey (soprano sax) have never recorded a studio album as an unaccompanied duo … until now!

the music is spare and peerlessly inventive as always, but the mood remains light and joyful, with a subtle undercurrent of absurd humor. while improvised music can sometimes seem airless and precious, ommatidia opens the window on a sunny afternoon… the album’s gusts of breath, percussive splatter, and controlled explosions form six succinct pieces that feel alive and vital, while still speaking in nmperign’s utterly unique sonic language. a perfect way in for newcomers and a revelation for long-time fans, ommatidia is the essential nmperign.

previous nmperign albums have employed guest musicians – notably close collaborator and tape loop saboteur jason lescalleet, but also luminaries such as gunter mueller, axel doerner, andrea neumann, and burkhard beins – and subversive or dodgy recording techniques; their 2 x lp on siwa was recorded entirely to micro-cassette and cassette walkman, while an early cd on selektion was edited from live mini-disc recordings. intransitive is proud to present the nmperign album that fans have been waiting for: the core duo, beautifully recorded in an actual studio with excellent microphones.

when not making nmperign music, greg kelley performs with the aggressively psychedelic noise unit heathen shame (along with wayne rogers & kate village of major stars), minimalist chamber group the undr quartet, and raucous rock band life partners. rainey regularly tours with folk/pop duo damon & naomi and leads the bsc, an eight-piece electro-acoustic improvising ensemble. they live in boston and new orleans, respectively.

limited edition cd comes in full-color digipack designed by mike shiflet.orded in an actual studio with excellent microphones.

charlemagne palestinethe golden mean” deluxe compact disc set

  • the golden mean (part 1) (26:12)
  • the golden mean (part 2) (14:25)
may 2007 release ; exceedingly nice edition from stephane roux’s shiiin imprint offering an otherwise unavailable 1979 recording of charlemagne palestine performing simultaneously on two bösendorfer imperial grand pianos at the sorbonne chapel in paris on november 2nd, 1979 ...

the music picks up right where “strumming music” left off ; palestine climbs the keyboard chromatically, pausing on each intervallic change to reveal endless variations of upper-harmonic activity ... as far as early recordings of his solo piano music go, this is one the best ; the ringing architecture of sorbonne emphasizes the swirling overtones drastically ...

now, back to the edition (as i’m sure you’re wondering why these are so expensive !!!) ; each copy comes as a digipack cd (with a poster in the booklet-sleeve, detailed below) with a varying-color chunk of crushed-velvet hand-glued to the “cover” ... this is then placed inside a separate slip-case (presumably to protect said velvet from any outside influence) ... it’s got “gallery-quality” written all over it (well, not literally) & i felt compelled to inaugurate a “deluxe compact disc set” category in the mms db to cover these sorts of painstakingly produced editions ...

ps. i received only a few copies of each color ; early adopters here are welcome to choose from ::

'the golden mean' for two bösendorfer imperial pianos. chapelle de la sorbonne, paris, november 2, 1979, festival d'automne.

recorded by radio france for a broadcast by daniel caux for france culture (atelier de création radiophonique). very luxurious object (which explains the price !) : each cd is hand-made, one by one, and each box is fully covered by the velvet material ! the first 1,000 copies will be a limited and numbered edition with a velvet cover specifically designed by charlemagne himself ! five different colours will be available, 200 cds for each colour.

part 1 : begins on middle c each piano every so slowly sounding this tone first one piano then the other soooo slowly then gradually gradually a little stronger a little faster but everever sooo gradually all the overtones ringing and singing amazing how just two repeated middle c's can have so many ever changing rich little cascading voices behind them then the middle c# is also added little by little creating the interval of a minor second between with beating and beating and overtones beating and beating then the middle d is introduced smoother less sharp and dissonant the major second rich and reinforcing one with the other and their overtones less strident than before a collaborative resonant interval a sing-song then the d# is introduced creating a minor third some say melancholy is the ringing of the minor third soon the middle e the major third arrives brighter more triumphant and jolts and battles with our minor third each pulls its sonic punches minor major minor major and finally major holds on and minor retreats and soon our old major second comes to greet major third and they dance the majors dance such a vibrant and victorious sound but soon the middle f arrives and gradually the majors give up their dancing to let the middle f and the interval of the perfect fourth clang in it's perfection and resolution but this perfection will not last and the devil arrives the f# brings the dreaded tritone the devil's interval is here and all balance and harmony are in confusion it clangs its famous dies irae and ends the first section.

part 2 : we begin with one piano that plays middle c while the other plays the c one octave higher this time the c is lighter and the 2 octaves have overtones that meet in the middle and rise upwards soon the upper c meets a b creating a higher minor second descending much different that the minor second of the first section but the middle c revisited the c# and we have ascending and descending minor seconds undulating together which leads to the higher minor second descending to a major second bb and the middle c ascending to the major second d creating a smoother and jollier high-low sing-song then 2 minor thirds one descending from above the a and the other ascending from below the d# a melancholy augmented chord feeling that continues until the majors arrive though this time one descending from above the ab and the other ascending from below the e again we feel an augmented chord feeling but this time brighter and sunnier and more optimistic and then from above we hear a perfect fourth the higher c with the middle g and from below the middle c to the middle f create a beautiful sonorous chord of cfgc' which gets to dance and sing for a very short luvly time because here comes 2 devils the tritone middle cmiddle f# and the higher c middle f# who dance their devilous prance like little children hand in hand round and round singing dies irae dies illa solvet saeclum in favilla and then the devils fade away and fade away and fade away and fade away.

june 2009 release ; first mass-market release from the long-running duo of ashley paul (here :: alto sax, clarinet, and “greenbox”) & eli keszler (snare drum, floor tom, crotales, metal, cymbals, and bow) ...

straddling the divide between extended-technique riddled modern composition(s) and an aggressively keening strain of high-frequency free improvisation, the pair alternate between bit-reed / bowed-metal screech (the majority of the first side) and more scrabbly avenues (the flip) ; rarely does the music land in any one tonal / rhythmic center, preferring liquid development(s) to stasis ...

on top of the visceral thrill ride that is the music here, the edition itself is something a wonder, consisting of a gorgeous screened lp sleeve adorned with a vellum fold-out, which lifts to reveal the album credits ... not since the days of harry partch’s gate 5 have i seen such a perfect melding of the self-realized record/label spec & the forward-thinking music to match ... highly recommended !!!

eli keszler / ashley paul
aster

aster is the duo and debut lp release of ashley paul and eli keszler. performing across the northeast the past 3 years they have developed a unique style of sound which combines keszler's piercing high pitched resonances from bowed crotales and cymbals with paul's altissimo sustains and drastic pitch bends on alto saxophone and clarinet. the split tone combinations from these instruments is surprising and overwhelming, creating continuously shifting, multi-layered harmonics and intense inner ear sound. spinning discs, invented resonating metal configurations, bending reed tones and voice interference carefully blend creating a wild texture that is both harsh and striking. in contrast, the final piece displays ashley’s wrenching string attacks and eli’s rapid-fire percussion, filled with low-end bowed cymbals and jittery crashes. recorded to 4 track with no sound modification, aster is the first 'official' release of this long standing duo, which plans on a series of releases in the future.

pressed on 160 gram copper plate pressed virgin vinyl, the record is housed in a black inner sleeve. the textured paper cover features a layered silk screened drawing while the inside contains grey pasted notes with an attached 8 x 24 inch three part multi-tone picture printed across a fold-out frosted vellum book. all silk screened, hand assembled and drawn by ashley and eli.

the record comes in a limited hand numbered edition of 300 copies.

april 2009 release ; self-issued full-length cd from the duo pedestrian deposit lineup of jon borges & shannon kennedy ...

stepping back a bit from the project’s harsh-noise origins, jon & shannon proceed in a manner having much more to do with the contemporary musique concrète of lionel marchetti et.al ; multiple layers of sound (filtered-out analogue drones, crackling field recordings and even shannon’s accomplished cello & bowed/scraped metals) are combined in ways that subtly demonstrate the pair’s love for “classicelectro-acoustic modes ...

the music is largely drone-based (there’s almost always a low-end bed on which the more scattered materials lie) and, for the greater part, quite quiet ; making the occasional blast of “pedal-noiselineage skree that much more effective (at the beginning of “requite” the volume level jumps something like 48db ; serious dynamic range !!!) ...

excellent work, and one of my early contenders for record-of-the-year status ; highly recommended !!!

november 2008 release ; first album for thurston moore & co’s ecstatic peace! from this roadhouse-psych quartet, borne of the ashes of double leopards ...

full, proper-studio album (produced by thurston, no less) ; the band is notably more focused & fuller-sounding here than on the myriad singles & tapes released over the past few years (& reissued via carlos giffoni’s no fun productions as “remains” & “resin”) despite the material overall being much more minimal, arrangement-wise (for example, listen to the sound-sample for the long, wistful drum / organ intro to “the storm”) ...

maya seems to have accepted the role of “lead singer” for this session (aside from a few mike / maya call & response numbers) and largely missing is mike’s bed of modular synth drones ... but the songs themselves are much stronger, their monolithic progressions are getting more & more transfixing, recalling late-night open-road journeys set out on snail-back ...

maya miller and michael bernstein met in new york a decade ago, and began making music together as half of sturm und drone quartet double leopards a few years after that. religious knives came later still, away from the road and the rehearsal space, borne and nurtured in cramped apartments throughout kings county. beginning in 2005, the pair released a string of cd-rs and cassettes, both on their own heavy tapes imprint and through the labels of kindred spirits. steadily moving away from the psychedelic tone baths and modern industrial scrape for which the leopards had become known, religious knives coursed through minimal synth oscillations and spare kraut repetition.

mouthus' nate nelson joined the pair in 2006, lending a powerful presence behind the drums that shaped religious knives' rudimentary jams into rough-hewn, long-form paeans to tar-blackened bummer psych. soon after that, old friend todd cavallo completed the quartet on bass, adding a sturdy low end and dubwise groove that lifted religious knives from cellar murk to black cloud puffs of bone deep alarm.

an active four-piece for a little more than a year now, religious knives have presided over a pair of twelve-inches, a couple of collections of out of print singles and long gone burns, and one full-length. all throughout, these four have traced a path away from the clamour they once knew, bathing slight guitars, interlocking vocals, and solemn basslines in reedy organs and recalcitrant modular synths. the seemingly tin eared would call it noise, but in these eight hands such a set plays as anything but, instead a (cough) syrupy stroll in search of the ghosts of rock's classicist past.

with the door, religious knives have not only found those bygone days, but broken them apart. there are bookmarks to be found here, pages creased in well-worn chapters. but make no mistake - theirs is a sound tied to the here and now, a summer record for those dread days when the heat holds low and skin sticks to cheap car seats and old patio furniture. these six songs are brighter, sharper than anything that has come before, locking in tight on jugular rhythms. it's the score for disappearing neighborhoods and crumbling buildings, a hope of holding onto the past as those around us move fast to forget it. it is scent as sound, the stench of smog and sickly smoke spiraling towards the sky. it is brooklyn, july of 2008. the sun has left us in the east, disappearing somewhere behind jersey, leaving our borough to find the pulse of another night deep with the city's streets.

february 2009 release ; second lp from this zac-davis-led troupe, with ties to no known spheres of logic ...

i’m on record as a fan-for-life of zac’s various transgressions ; this one ups the ante from the similarly seagal-themed “hard to kill” while simultaneously bringing the energy levels down ... these short song-nuggets certainly have a head-nod flair to them (listen to the sound-sample for one of the more “right on” blasts) & the tempos pretty much stay in the lumbering range(s), with much lo-fi drumming pitched down about an octave for that ‘tussin come-down effect ... righteous.

january 2009 release ; second disc from the duo of wiese & spencer ...

unlikenew york / atlanta” ‘s in-situ / crowd-front presentations, this one features these guys comfortably nestled in spencer’s studio / digs ... the tone is largely insular, with each pulling leads & direction(s) from the other, resulting in a “spiralling-out-of-control” feel as wiese comes to grips with spencer’s hyper-active glottis, ditto spencer wiese’s synth / computer automations ...

... as something of a continuation / update of the “company-week” style improv get-togethers that dotted the 70s / 80s / 90s musical landscape, this set triumphs gloriously (perhaps the influence of these guys touring w/ evan parker ?) - although i can easily see hardcore euro-improv enthusiasts being entirely irked by the kinds of secret language on display (and i’m not talking specifically about spencer’s omnipresent ululations) ...

years in the trenches, these guys are at the peak of their capabilities ... highly recommended !!!

"cincinnati"
dronedisco fig. 95

john wieseelectronics, objects, msp, voice, synthesizer
c. spencer yehvoice, synthesizer, electronics, tabletop bass guitar, objects

the cooperative of composer/improvisers john wiese (sissy spacek) and c. spencer yeh (burning star core) reveals itself again, presenting a collection of new works titled "cincinnati." so far wiese & yeh's previous full-length documents have been culled from live performance situations and one could cite "cincinnati" as the duo's first studio album.

recorded face-to-face in late 2007 at ashworth tap room in cincinnati oh, "cincinnati" reveals further unexpected developments and strategies of this ongoing partnership.  familiar machineries were primed, but an increasingly alien attitude was fed through and processed into churning and bewildering shapes.  the results of these sessions were catalogued and surgically isolated into specimens by yeh; a little editing employed to carve the forms somewhat presentable, but no "studio trickery" to mask the organic nature. mastered by saff mastering to sharpen the bulbs and polish the blades, the whole of the fourteen tracks form a monumentally intimate body touched by indeterminate intuition, instant composition, and interior logic.

wiese and yeh first joined together on a stage in columbus oh, and since then have participated in the no-fi/cmn "free noise" 2007 tour in the uk, as well as fireworks-laden travels through coastal, midwest, and southern usa.  with many finished missives yet to be issued, and many ideas discussed but not yet realized, the combined restlessness and curiousity of the team insures that "cincinnati" gestures not only towards the past and present, but the future as well.

"cincinnati" is available in an edition of 500 copies in the increasingly alienated compact disc format.  the included 8-page booklet contains a pictoral documenting the typical meeting between the two players.

october 2009 release ; neat fold-out double-disc edition covering a series of pieces curated by martijn hohmann for a “listening room at art gallery lokaal01” in breda, nl ...

the set ships flat (actually smaller than your average dorado gatefold) but opens up like so ::

some great work here, including all-exclusive pieces from machinefabriek (crackly, cheap-reverb plugin rework of aaron martin’s cello), janek schaefer (neat, plunderphonic flamenco piece), runzelstirn & gurgelstøck (classic, aktion-heavy rudolf), merzbow (washing-machine rhythms into a synth blow-out) ...

... then (ad)vance(d) (formant-filter drones & assorted static), justin bennett’s students (ground-hum rich field recording overlay), steve roden (automatic-feeling mystery clank & reed drones - get lost in the long sound-sample), francisco lópez (rainforest hiss), and staplerfahrer (grainy, noisy grisple) ...

most pieces hover around the 10-minute mark, as such there’s enough room for them to say what they need to without feeling hurried ... as site-specific compilations go this one’s a keeper ; highly recommended !!!

march 2009 release ; first of two 7” single records in unframed’s “i/d/v” series ...

each of these contain a suite of music by six separate artists gathered around a unifying theme (in this case :: the turntable) ; first a one-minute piece, then a pair of lock-grooves ... the record itself is a feat of engineering (undoubtedly paul brekus’ work) with nary a lead-in or lead-out groove to be found, forcing the listener to essentially needle-drop until the desired effect is reached ...

haven’t seen an “art record” of this caliber in some time, with the platter housed in a lovely embossed sleeve (with eye-catching coencentric rings) ; a nice record, in every sense of the word ...
unframed press release ::

i/d/v 01 7” series

a series of 7 records of 1 minute tracks and lock grooves. focus of each volume is on one particular instrument and on the ways in which invited artists address the specifics of duration as defined by the given format. duration here is not considered as a mere quantity of time, but as the subjective relations that we establish within time’s dimension.

twelve participants to the first two releases contribute one minute-long track and two locked grooves (of 1.8 seconds at 33.1/3 rpm). each record has six 1-minute tracks and twelve locked grooves. either approached as open works of art or just as dj tools, the records in this series straightforwardly demand an active mode of listening.

the first release, i/d/v 01, engages the very idea of turntable as an instrument, as defined by a world-spanning selection of avant-garde turntablists. opening track is lary 7’s minute-long piece, excerpt from a performance in which a vinyl cutting machine was fed with the sound of the room’s ambience, in order to generate a feedback loop. the collection features tracks also by joe colley, busratch, toshio kajiwara, tommy birchett and dieb13.
