april 2009 release ; first new music from mr. tazartès in many a year, purportedly a self-curated “sampler plate” from his vast archives ...

right off the bat we’re met with a wall of seemingly unrelated taped fragments :: a couple has an argument in a hallway, a headless drum-machine triggers a maudlin reaction from a former mime ... later several children mimic slowed-down bird song, mr. tazartès sings over a solemn organ part before emulating bedouin folk songs (overdubbed) over an electronic ostinato ... much later still things really hit their stride as nine minutes of looped electronics, field recordings, chanting, and all manner of mystery noises lead us down a path that had otherwise been left undiscovered ... until it was mapped out by tazartès inhis imitable style ...

unfinished black digipack case ; black cd. no track titles, recording credits, nor credits of any kind other than the sticker on the cove ... highly recommended !!!

september 2009 release ; debut from this vancouver-areasupergroup” of joshuamagneticringstevenson, feed & seed’s daniel presnell, jennie pace, and richard smith ...

certainly far away from the current batch of post-emeralds synth-droners, these guys are blazing a different kind of saddle, taking in influences as diffuse as early suicide, “iv” era faust, hell, even a kind of gary glitter-esque schaffel that’s uniquely their own ... highly recommended !!!

von bingen self-titled
long playing record, w/full color inner and outer sleeve
amen absen
september 15, 2009

we would like you to consider owning von bingen’s self titled first lp either for your own personal betterment, or for the betterment of your patrons. to aid you in this endeavor, we submit the following summary of biographies, impressions, and predictions.

von bingen began life when husband and wife duo jenni pace and daniel presnell (astral blessing) temporarily suspended hildegard (their east coast group of clangorous misfits), and relocated to vancouver, bc where they soon met josh stevenson (aka magneticring, and one-time jomf member), and richard smith.

influenced by histories of conceptual art practices and electronic and outsider music native to the west coast, von bingen’s sound is at once reminiscent of distant sonics, such as those found in the labs of 60’s sf pioneers, or overheard in berlin’s zodiac club in the early 70’s, while also anticipating the drone of future decades. folk forms gleefully mutate, reborn as new hybrids, dignified by analog modular and semi-modular synthesizer systems from serge, buchla, and ems. instruments such as the flute, clarinet, guitar, and the drum are defamiliarized through quixotic treatments, originating from experimentations in the band’s studio. by rescuing tones, processes and technology from dusty desuetude, von bingen happens upon a unique retrofit for advanced audiences that is sure to confound, if not altogether please.

within the grooves of this lp, you will not find full-fledged allegiance to current fashions, nor will you find some light loop of cheap sensations, hollow-core historical reenactments, or facsimile sentiments. in fact, we are not sure what you will find at all, and that is the beauty of nature, a potentially infinite system of chances, where the opportunity to un-learn is as important as the opportunity to learn; where memories possess the power to eclipse experience; where all history becomes synesthesia. join von bingen in this new eden, and by all means, have an apple.

yoshi wadaearth horns with electronic drone” compact disc

click the play button to hear an excerpt of "earth horns with electronic drone"
march 2009 release ; at long last - the fourth and final installment in this joint edition omega point / em records series, covering the sound-art work of fluxus-lineage sound-artist yoshi wada ...

and what a long, strange trip it’s been !!! this whole series has instilled so much collective joy in amongst the leagues of past-looking experimental & drone-music followers that i’m sad to see it come to an end, but all things must ... and what better way than with this 77-minute excerpt of a 2 hour, 25 minute performance by yoshi, garrett list, barbara stewart, jim burton, and liz phillips recorded on february 24th, 1974 at the everson museum of art, syracuse, new york ...

the piece opens (listen to the sound-sample) with a dry, slightly overtone-riddled sine-wave drone, over which the ensemble begin to intone on their “earth horns” - extended didgeridoo-lineage pipes (some up to 20 feet long !!!) - in unison over the tonal root ... as the piece gets underway, you really begin to feel the fabric of time slip away ; several consecutive listens-through consumed an entire afternoon, after which i had little memory of any events taking place ...

this cd edition happens to be my preferred format-of-choice here as it offers the longest continuous stretch of music (plus, as the piece itself is something of a static, almost sculptural event you’ll probably want to keep this on automatic repeat for a few days - something very easy to achieve with cd players these days) ; comes with a fold-out booklet with english program notes on one side, and a george maciunas flyer for a performance by wada’s lip vibrators (see just below) on the flip. highly recommended !!!

edition omega point sound art series press release...

yoshi wada "earth horns with electronic drone" (cd)
publisher: omega point / em records (op-0007 / em1081cd)

a world premiere from yoshi wada and em records / omega point: the first-ever release of "earth horns with electronic drone", recorded live in 1974. combining four of wada's self-made "pipehorns" (made from plumbing materials, over three meters in length), with an electronic drone tuned to the electrical current of the performance space, this is a lost masterpiece of early minimalism, placing wada rightfully in the pantheon with la monte young, phill niblock, maryanne amacher and alvin lucier.

recorded live in syracuse, new york, this recording captures the room-filling complex overtones generated by the ever-shifting interplay of the breathing horns and the constant electronic drone. this is a music of ritual hypnotic power, its heavy low end mass and sense of change within constancy engendering a meditative transcendency.

"earth horns with electronic drone" is the fourth and ultimate release in our yoshi wada series, a must for all fans of minimalism, heavy drones, ritual, mystery and world-shaking transcendence. from an original performance of almost three hours, the cd features a 77 minute excerpt; we are especially honored to also offer the full performance as a triple lp set. from earth horns to beyond the firmament: prepare to be elevated!

april 2009 release ; excellent disc of glowing, resonant drones from sun circle member zach wallace ...

performed entirely on a glass armonica built by zach during his tenure out in the hudson river valley, the three pieces here (played by groups of differing number ranging up to 12) absolutely hum with detail ... even with the slight microtonal nature of the instrument’s design, the music stays largely within a modal / tonal center (listen to the sound-sample for a particularly lovely bit) & the spindle’s constant rotation adds a woozy rhythmic underpinning (in fact, after a few minutes i kept thinking it was listening to a slightly off-center lp !!!)

a rare conflux of experimental-instrument design and beautiful music. highly recommended !!!

glass armonica
cd edition of 500

glass armonica is the first solo cd by musician zach wallace. when not counting fauna in the montana wilderness, zach can be seen performing across the incense sticks from greg davis in their stoic long form drone duo sun circle.

zach’s armonica, based loosely on benjamin franklin’s 1761 design, is built entirely from thrift store bought wine glasses and has been modified to handle multiple players. the performances captured here were recorded in ann arbor, michigan, in the spring of 2007. the results are not too far off from what you might imagine if you’ve ever coxed sound waves from the rim of a wine glass with your finger. now just imagine multiplying that sound a few times over until you arrive at a dense fog of resonant tones that hover in mid air while concurrently penetrating your pituitary glad. that’s getting close.

edition of 500 in an offset white case with silver ink.

january 2009 release ; second disc from the duo of wiese & spencer ...

unlikenew york / atlanta” ‘s in-situ / crowd-front presentations, this one features these guys comfortably nestled in spencer’s studio / digs ... the tone is largely insular, with each pulling leads & direction(s) from the other, resulting in a “spiralling-out-of-control” feel as wiese comes to grips with spencer’s hyper-active glottis, ditto spencer wiese’s synth / computer automations ...

... as something of a continuation / update of the “company-week” style improv get-togethers that dotted the 70s / 80s / 90s musical landscape, this set triumphs gloriously (perhaps the influence of these guys touring w/ evan parker ?) - although i can easily see hardcore euro-improv enthusiasts being entirely irked by the kinds of secret language on display (and i’m not talking specifically about spencer’s omnipresent ululations) ...

years in the trenches, these guys are at the peak of their capabilities ... highly recommended !!!

john wiese & c. spencer yeh
"cincinnati"
dronedisco fig. 95

john wiese – electronics, objects, msp, voice, synthesizer
c. spencer yeh – voice, synthesizer, electronics, tabletop bass guitar, objects

the cooperative of composer/improvisers john wiese (sissy spacek) and c. spencer yeh (burning star core) reveals itself again, presenting a collection of new works titled "cincinnati." so far wiese & yeh's previous full-length documents have been culled from live performance situations and one could cite "cincinnati" as the duo's first studio album.

recorded face-to-face in late 2007 at ashworth tap room in cincinnati oh, "cincinnati" reveals further unexpected developments and strategies of this ongoing partnership.  familiar machineries were primed, but an increasingly alien attitude was fed through and processed into churning and bewildering shapes.  the results of these sessions were catalogued and surgically isolated into specimens by yeh; a little editing employed to carve the forms somewhat presentable, but no "studio trickery" to mask the organic nature. mastered by saff mastering to sharpen the bulbs and polish the blades, the whole of the fourteen tracks form a monumentally intimate body touched by indeterminate intuition, instant composition, and interior logic.

wiese and yeh first joined together on a stage in columbus oh, and since then have participated in the no-fi/cmn "free noise" 2007 tour in the uk, as well as fireworks-laden travels through coastal, midwest, and southern usa.  with many finished missives yet to be issued, and many ideas discussed but not yet realized, the combined restlessness and curiousity of the team insures that "cincinnati" gestures not only towards the past and present, but the future as well.

"cincinnati" is available in an edition of 500 copies in the increasingly alienated compact disc format.  the included 8-page booklet contains a pictoral documenting the typical meeting between the two players.

yellow tears
don't cry lp

yellow tears is the sound of a drop of urine being pushed through an infected urethra. an uncomfortable attraction to the golden realms of natural expulsion, this is the audio collage equivalent of a child’s worst day at a carnival as an actionist nightmare of disturbing imagery and sounds. don’t cry shows these young masters at work carving out sculptures of depravity using god knows what for source sounds. the listener is introduced to a mostly quiet, subtle psychology of fear, childhood trauma and locked cellars. power comes from the absence the familiar. separating themselves from narcissistic heard, the band requires decades of therapy to begin to solve their problems. bad dreams are supposed to be frightening.

june 2009 release ; despite all of the fore-warning (below) i’ll admit to being completely blind-sided by this new richard youngs record - not a collection of somber autumnal dirges, nor a collection of gauzy string drones, but in fact a collection of chicago house anthems, albeit with the regular 4/4 pulse replaced by an entirely free-running rhythm-grid ...

this succeeds wholly in throwing a coup i’d personally tried (in vain) for 10 years to perpetuate ; it treats the rich sound pallette of 80s / 90s dance-music merely as source-material, stripping away the robotic anchor, the melodies, the false sense(s) of euphoria and ennui, leaving only a shambolic array of twisting, dissonant string-synth lines and mis-matched chugging arpeggiations ; the ultimate miasma ...

for me this has been the jam of the summer ; highly recommended !!!

richard youngs
like a neuron
lp

richard youngs is a prolific british musician (located in glasgow) with an extremely diverse output. his new album for dekorder might not be a surprise to anyone following his career. still, a self-proclaimed all-electronicecstatic house record” comes somewhat unexpected. with a line of distinctive synthesizers often used for techno/house music youngs recreates the energy, euphoria and frenzy of these styles without ever trying to recreate the music note by note.

the final outcome sounds like recordings made by aliens who have received transmissions about house music but never listened to the music itself. the album reminds of the sound of hallways/corridors inbetween large house parties where you can hear the music from several floors collide. while it’s an emulation, interpretation or replica of house music, it’s still managing to evoke similar feelings even though some might find it difficult to dance to the music.

in the past, youngs has released several albums on a dozen labels such as vhf, jagjaguwar, table of the elements, gipsy sphinx, majora, chocolate monk, celebrate psi phenomena, fusetron and his own no fans outlet. he has collaborated with neil campbell (aka astral social club), matthew bower, simon wickham-smith and many others and was a member of the a-band and has performed live and in the studio with sunroof! and skullflower. additionally, youngs played bass for jandek, appearing on three of his live records/dvd’s.

culling inspiration(s) from eliane radigue, maryanne amacher, la monte young and other mms-friendly names, ms. ödlund’s music here envelops the listener via an array of impeccably fashioned spectral drones (which remind me a bit of a more natural / elemental version of what bj nilsen’s been up to the last few years) & dense field-recording laced assemblies that rarely mis-step (only “troglodyte” ‘s coil-lite stylings give me the chills) ...

ideal press release...

christine ödlund "phenomena"
cd album, ideal057 2008, digipack w/booklet

christine ödlund is a sound- and visual artist based in stockholm, sweden and "phenomena" is her debut album. ödlund is educated in electro-acoustic music at ems, the royal academy of fine arts and konstfack - all in stockholm.

her organic electro-acoustic music is drifting slowly over dark depths and is surprisingly detailed, surprisingly lyrical. it seems to communicate with ancient powers, forgotten gods and animals ... it's hard not to drift away and into yourself when listening to "phenomena". it holds echoes of old school industrial music, musique concrete, swedish 60's eam but also something very personal and very own.

"phenomena" is of course presented together with an exclusive digipack with ödlund's images as companion to the compositions. christine ödlund is a very important addition to the swedish contemporary electronic music scene!

a short interview with christine ödlund:

how was your creative process in making "phenomena"?

in my artistic work with audio and image, the perceptual exercise is trying to focus on the space between the two art forms in search for additional hidden senses, dimensions or unknown laws of nature. phenomena has been made in this creative space between sound & image.

is the music composed for your video works or visual art?

in these post-apocalyptic landscapes, the music is materializing into thought-forms, lightnings and other natural and paranormal phenomena

how is the relation between your visual art and your music?

there's a close relationship between image and sound in my art. not in a synesthetic sense but as a way of exploring nature and the supernatural.

what's your inspiration? please give us a few names.

eliane radigue.
marianne amacher.
la monte young. ain soph - especially their dark ambient compositions.
some of the black metal today is also very inspiring.

each of these contain a suite of music by six separate artists gathered around a unifying theme (in this case :: the turntable) ; first a one-minute piece, then a pair of lock-grooves ... the record itself is a feat of engineering (undoubtedly paul brekus’ work) with nary a lead-in or lead-out groove to be found, forcing the listener to essentially needle-drop until the desired effect is reached ...

i/d/v 01 7” series

a series of 7” records of 1 minute tracks and lock grooves. focus of each volume is on one particular instrument and on the ways in which invited artists address the specifics of duration as defined by the given format. duration here is not considered as a mere quantity of time, but as the subjective relations that we establish within time’s dimension.

twelve participants to the first two releases contribute one minute-long track and two locked grooves (of 1.8 seconds at 33.1/3 rpm). each record has six 1-minute tracks and twelve locked grooves. either approached as open works of art or just as dj tools, the records in this series straightforwardly demand an active mode of listening.

the first release, i/d/v 01, engages the very idea of turntable as an instrument, as defined by a world-spanning selection of avant-garde turntablists. opening track is lary 7’s minute-long piece, excerpt from a performance in which a vinyl cutting machine was fed with the sound of the room’s ambience, in order to generate a feedback loop. the collection features tracks also by joe colley, busratch, toshio kajiwara, tommy birchett and dieb13.

i/d/v 02, the second 7” in the series, focuses on a range of original approaches to guitar playing and recording. ian epps, kenta nagai, annette krebs, chris forsyth, giuseppe ielasi and koen holtkamp are all well-known for their idiosyncratic styles, and recognized as contemporary innovators of the instrument. various extended and traditional techniques are articulated in this compendium through electric, acoustic, twelve-string and fretless guitar.

march 2009 release ; tyfus-curated compilation of various readings of richie valens’ re-casting of the veracruz-ian wedding dance into rock n’ roll form (incidentally - the first spanish-language hit in the modern pop era) ...

extremely well-chosen lot at work here, ranging from recent / classic mms mainstays angst hase pfeffer nase, bromptreb, kommissar hjuler & mama bär, anla courtis ... to more obscure names which require a bit more leg-work to get to the bottom of ... the whole thing is of course wrapped up in a gross plunderphonic dennis sleeve, with a poster-insert & a hand-bill from the original scheldapen concert than inspired the comp ...

la bamba ; compilation lp

over 15 years ago daniël de wereldvermaarde botanicus (hat and cacti collector cassis cornuta) deejayed a ton of horrible la bamba versions for 2 hours in the now defunct situationist radioshow rtvs (radio centraal -antwerp). the "galdezen" of rtvs yelled/sung along, creating their own versions of la bamba while getting more and more hammered or naturally gone from a bamba trance!

after telling me this short story daniël mumbled "i always wanted to dj all night long la bamba, i think it will drive people insane", this idea expanded into making this international compilation lp , which was made for the ultros exemos la bamba night(mare), february 28/2009 at scheldapen in antwerp. that night daniël deejayed over 300 different versions of la bamba, only to be interluded by a giant lineup of artists performing a live la bamba rendition!

this lp includes la bamba versions by ; sudden infant! floris vanhoof! angst hase pfeffer nase! bromptreb! anla courtis! smack music 7! kommissar hjuler! mitt land och leo! human hairs! daniel de wereldvermaarde botanicus! remork! reijo pami! glands of external secretion! jan van den dobbelsteen! rubber o cement! ludo mich! mama bär! tomutonto! vvm & the synthetic voice of gaeoudjiparl van den dobbelsteen! daniëlle lemaire! kraus! and fricara pacchu!

some of these versions sound very very far away from how u know la bamba, others sound a little bit closer..

april 2009 release ; available at last ; the michigan installment of rrr’s regional noise boxed-set series, covering latter-day activities in & around “the wolverine state” ...

naturally there are a multitude of tracks from current / former wolf eyes members & acolytes, but i ended up being the most impressed with the efforts from redrot (odd, sliding electric bass & almost aphex-twin lineage feedback-squeal beats), evenings (harsh, zap-heavy electronics), cotton museum (woozy electro-acoustic improv), and mammal (ditto on the drum-machine tip) ...

quite reasonably priced, with the 6 lps in plain white sleeves slid inside a silk-screened / decapitated bags unlimited lp mailer coated in an assortment of visages of state-dwellers / originators offering hours of party-fun for all within eyeshot ... highly recommended !!!

february 2009 release ; excellent, deluxe double-disc set covering only the earliest electronic music experiments carried out in denmark ...

those of who follow the creel pone series will be familiar with a few of these names (fuzzy !!! - but also bent lorentzen & svend christiansen) & the others via the discs occasionally in stock here @ mms on the da capo label (else marie pade, gunner møller pedersen, jørgen plaetner) ... this set offers a selection of pieces (the majority dating back to the 1960s) focusing on the sparse, eruption-oriented work that sets apart the danish scene from the contemporaneous music produced in paris, tokyo, and the u.s. ...

can’t get a much nicer cd edition ; the outer sleeve holds a six-panel double-disc gatefold sleeve with an extensive, 48-page booklet (danish in the left column, english on the right throughout) offering a few different chronologies, composers’ notes, and endless 60s gear porn / studio documentation ::

the best “geographic surveycompilation i’ve come across this year ; highly recommended !!!
ljud press release...

pioneers – the beginning of danish electronic music
out on february 21st.

finally ! a compilation that holds the earliest recordings of danish electronic music. the cd contains works by danish electronic pioneers else marie pade, jørgen plaetner, bent lorentzen, gunner møller pedersen, fuzzy, svend nielsen and svend christiansen.

the booklet contains interviews with all the composers except from plaetner who died in 2002, and a general introduction to the environment surrounding the danish electronic musicians in the late 1950 - early 60's.

the music has exclusively been offered to ljud who are very grateful. we cleaned the reel tapes, digitalized the music, made interviews etc. the double cd contains a lot of goodies: tons of so far unreleased music and a piece from 1963 by jørgen plaetner where danish poet jørgen gustava brandt reads a poem on top. one of the earliest recordings in denmark where music and poetry blends together. what a treat !

august 2009 release ; just wow ...

possibly the penultimate release in a series of locked-groove releases instigated by rrronemil beaulieaulessard back in 1993 with the “rrr-100” 7” single record (feat. 50 locks per side by folks like jim o’rourke, idea fire company, borbetomagus, skullflower, chop shop, new blockaders, et.al) then again in 1998 with the “rrr-500” lp (250 on each side by ... one a piece by pretty much a who’s who of late-90s experimental sound) ...

and now, 11 years later, we get the next logical evolutive step ; 1000 locked grooves (500 per side !!!) ; 50 each by 20 artists picked by rrron based on the following algorithm ::

this time i decided to focus on only 20 artists and give them plenty of room to stretch out - really glad i did because this one is much more solid than the other two, noisewise

before i invited the artists, i had devised a simple formula for myself
50/50 = noise/electronic (experimental)
50/50 = new/old school
50/50 = usa/intn'l
50/50 = people i always work with/people i've never worked with

the unsung genius / hero here is undoubtedly aardvark mastering’s paul brekus, who must have spent countless man-hours getting the metal mothers cut just right (i can only imagine the number of time he got halfway through cutting a side before making a single mistake & having to start over from scratch !!!) ... despite the fallout from such a thing a thing (i.e. the deluge of blackened noise tapes & cdr’s i’m going to be handed at gigs over the next year or so comprised of “prurient loops” will undoubtedly be bafffling) the quality & attention to detail put forth by just about everyone is seriously impressive ... easily on the records of the year thusfar & a testament to the staying power & endless, mutating possibilities of the vinyl lp record ...

highest recommendation !!!

february 2009 release ; astoundingly great collection of some of the classic pieces from the 60s avant-garde / live electronic music wave presented here as originally issued (in chronological order) by larry austin & stanley lunetta via their “source: music of the avant garde” magazine & 10” record series between 1967 and 1973 ...

given the covetable / legendary nature of the original issues, the appearance of this set is highly welcome ; aside from the alternate versions of such classic pieces such as robert ashley’s “the wolfman” and alvin lucier’s “i am sitting in a room,” i found myself leaping out of my seat more often than not to check the credits of pieces with which i wasn’t already familiar ; in fact at the tail-end of the 1-2-3-4 punch of the second disc’s arthur woodbury - mark riener - larry austin - stanley lunetta quadfecta (listen to the sound-sample for the lunetta) i wondered out loud if i had the input-selector switch wrong & was instead listening to the new hanson tape ...

this is a major reissue project ; no follower of mid 20th century composition / sound-art practice and or the historic origins of noise should be caught dead without it ...

21050-2 3 cds

source records 1-6
music of the avant garde, 1968-1971

the digital reissue of the source lp's on 3 cds

pogus is extremely proud to reissue the recordings included in the seminal new music journal, source: music of the avant garde, vols. 1-6, issues 1-11, source records 1-6, 1967-1973. the original six ten-inch lp source records contained some of the most important experimental music of the nineteen-sixties to mid nineteen-seventies and they have now been reissued as a 3 cd set. source ended publication in 1973, having published, since 1967 , contemporary musical materials, scores, articles, interviews, photo essays and recordings over seven years, with up to 2000 subscribers to the semiannual journal: the subscribers avidly anticipated receiving two new and critically acclaimed issues each year during that period.

most of the original tape masters for the records, after over forty years, have vanished or have seriously deteriorated; hence, we have carefully transferred, noise-reduced, and crackle-removed all the actual lp record tracks to the digital medium, then mastered to the compact disc format for this reissue: the result is an authentic recreation of the original lp, characteristic sound.

va - the harmonic series - musical works in just intonation - cd

imprec272 - cd

the harmonic series is a compilation of musical works in just intonation created by three generations of contemporary composers who utilize this fascinating tuning system. a dense info booklet is included with notes from each artist. this compilation was curated over the span of two years by duane pitre. the goal of this compilation and its accompanying liner notes is to educate listeners about the origins and use of just intonation, as well as to portray the unique beauty of this tonal “color palette,” which is heard by relatively few in the western world and explored by even fewer.

although all the artists on the compilation work within the avant-garde/experimental genre, each artist lends something unique to the collection, and each employs a different approach toward how to utilize just intonation. within the harmonic series you’ll find an array of instrumentation such as piano, cello, accordion, electronics, guitar, ukelin, saxophone, violin, koto, and more.

the featured artists on the harmonic series are: pauline oliveros, ellen fullman, charles curtis, michael harrison, greg davis, r keenan lawler, duane pitre, theresa wong, and zachary james watkins.
