23five incorporated press release...

tetsuo furudate & zbigniew karkowski
world as will ii
23five003, compact disc

23five incorporated proudly presents the launch of the 23five series of recorded sound works. founded in 1993, 23five incorporated is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and increased awareness of sound works in the public arena, and to the support and education of artists working with and discussing the medium of sound. for the past 9 years, 23five incorporated has remained at the forefront in bringing the most adventurous elements of sound art to the san francisco bay area. 23five has served as an important benefactor to artists such as john duncan, francisco lopez, achim wollscheid, matt heckert, atau tanaka, and many more. the first in 23five’s series of recordings comes from tetsuo furudate and zbigniew karkowski, entitled world as will 2.

the world as will collaborations between composers tetsuo furudate and zbigniew karkowski reflect their mutual adherence to the principles of the 19th century thinker arthur schopenhauer, who had demonstrated a necessarily pessimistic philosophy within the comprehensive four volume set entitled die welt als wille und vorstellung (world as will). it is the opinion of furudate and karkowski that “will keeps creating the world and history, will creates human tragedies, causes chaos and is the primary source of creation.”

schopenhauer purported that scientific explanation can never do more than systematize and classify that which appears to be reality, and instead offered the theory that reality could be understood through the objectification of the individual will, as the capacity for consciousness to bring reality into being. it is a mistake, however, to assume that schopenhauer implied that will equates only as force. nevertheless, if each individual shapes their desires and understandings through the force of will, then social relationships are based upon a network of self-defining acts; thus, human suffering is not symptomatic but inherent to society as a whole. for schopenhauer, morality is the denial of the force of will, and should be eschewed in favor of the will as the primal creative force even at the inevitable price of existential pessimism.

almost 200 years later, furudate and karkowski have forged a collaborative sound that builds upon these principles, highlighting that their synchronized wills can unleash an infernal majesty through the cruel manifestation of electronic sound. drawing also from the acknowledgement of schopenhauser’s influence upon richard wagner’s vigorous operas, furudate and karkowski have centered world as will 2 almost exclusively upon samples of karkowski’s little heard orchestral work and wagner’s masterful götterdammerung. augmented through the crucible of digital processing, these electronic samples of vivid polyphony found in the masculine crescendos of orchestral sound take a violent turn towards the realms of militant noise. world as will 2 results in an unrelenting soundtrack of expressive power and will, shaped within arenas of sound.

tetsuo furudate is a japanese based composer who has dedicated himself to the dynamics of noise. zbigniew karkowski is a polish-swedish composer presently working in tokyo, japan, having worked extensively within the experimental noise scene during the past 11 years. along with furudate, karkowski has collaborated with francisco lopez, merzbow, pita, helmut schaefer, aube, john duncan, the hafler trio, cm von hausswolff, ulf bilting, and many others. he has performed at countless venues and festivals across the globe, including 23five’s most recent activating the media festival earlier this year.

founded in 1993, 23five incorporated is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and increased awareness of sound works in the public arena, and to the support and education of artists working with and discussing the medium of sound. for the past 14 years, 23five incorporated has remained at the forefront in bringing the most adventurous elements of sound art to the san francisco bay area. 23five has served as an important benefactor to artists such as john duncan, christina kubisch, francisco lopez, achim wollscheid, matt heckert, zbigniew karkowski, atau tanaka, and many more.

metamkine (france) #mk 033 cd

zbigniew karkowskiconsciously unconscious unconsciously conscious” three inch compact disc

  • consciously unconscious unconsciously conscious (2001)
a strange note to end the series on: this 2002 piece by zbigniew karkowski using his familiar blend of distorted low-end gristle and digital ring-mod/oscillator effects.

still; this is the closest the series ever got to “power electronics”, or at least that mego-style of digital sound production (actually, funny story: jerome asked kevin drumm to do one of these around the same time - kevin handed him what is now known as “land of lurches” which noetinger refused outright; frankly i’ll take kevin’s detail oriented synth/computer epics over this any day...)

not the title to start with; stick with the “classic” musique concrète ones and you’ll be golden...

top notch work from zbigniew; the familiar shit-storm of rectified digital fuzz & shifting spectral tones giving way to more subdued tendencies in spots, before (of course) fading out and blasting us with some ungodly wall of skree from beyond the 8th dimension...

recordings of sleaze art (france) #rosa 03 cd

kasper t. toeplitz / zbigniew karkowskile dépeupleur: zkt” compact disc

  • zkt (53:48)
molten burst of digital skree from zbigniew karkowski and kasper t. toeplitz. not far from something lasse marhaug would do; albeit a bit less crispy around the edges...
recordings of sleaze art press release...
le depeupleur _____ "zkt"
rosa_03

le depeupleur is the electronic project of zbigniew karkowski and kasper t toeplitz. both musicians use computers, and create electronic sounds - no samples, no "found" sounds - it's all "pure" electronic. even if their names can (also) be found in the "noise" circles - they did collaborate with musicians such as merzbow, tetsuo furudate, cccc or francisco lopez, to name a few - they are both composers having done, and still doing fully written down pieces for orchestras, ensembles etc

if there have to be some reference to the work of le depeupleur, it only could be xenakis

"zkt" is a long, one-hour piece structured in two parts - it ending being an eternal resonance. re-read beckett.

- erik satie

zbigniew karkowski
zbigniew karkowski is one of the most influential electronic music composers working today. linking the worlds of modern composition and industrial music he is a pivotal figure in the development of advanced noise. constantly on the road, he is a frequent performer on the geographical fringes of experimental music culture as well as a mainstay on the established festival circuit.

anton lukoszevieze
cellist anton lukoszevieze is one of the most diverse performers of his generation and is notable for his performances of avant-garde, experimental and improvised music. he is unique in the uk through his use of the curved bow (bach-bogen), which he is using to develop new repertoire for the cello. anton is the subject of several films by the renowned artist-filmmaker jayne parker and he is also a member of zeitkratzer. in june 2009 he was awarded the 'millennium star' medal, for services to lithuanian culture, by the government of the republic of lithuania.

this work is not music in a conventional sense, it does inhabit that world, but in a new way. the cello is treated fundamentally, as a resonating body, transmitting sounds elementally. the bow on a string, the flux of weight, pressure, speed and angularity releases a myriad of complex sound phenomena. the juxtaposition of multiple sounds on adjacent strings creates fluctuating and rhythmical beatings. the detuning of the instrument increases its pitch potential and basso profundity. in combination with computer electronics these elements are multiplied, extended and enriched.

nerve cell-0 is a joyous, ecstatic, exhilarating and epic vista of sound. it defies categorisation. play it very loud.

ww3 : the listening experience

it can be hard for musicians to read the prose of people who think they are entitled to write about this very intimate experience : listening to music. in fact, writing about music is a wager you cannot really win. what can you base your writings on ? your personal impressions ? your understanding of the work? at least try to describe the music ? what is being revealed when our mind sticks to the materiality of sound ? obviously, conveying one's personal experience is the difficult aspect.

the only thing i ever wrote about karkowski's music is this: as many of karkowski's pieces, this is a highly delicate yet physical work, which can be seen as an ode to loudspeakers. this sentence applied to execution of intelligence (2004), a piece produced for volume 3 of the anthology of noise and electronic music. however, i won't get away with this sole formula this time around.

mergence, below the demarcation and mix white conclude the world as will project, started ten years ago, the result of a collaboration between zbigniew karkowski and tetsuo furudate. the first piece arises from an infrabass ocean to crudely develop through a series of distant explosions, percussive energy, and short open cuts. as a whole, the structure is reminiscent of a slow crawling process. tremors follow (with karkowski, something always ends up shaking). for me, the second piece is both the imprint and the development of the first one. furudate's contribution to this joint venture is also easier to grasp. a menace passes by, and we are glad to remain hidden in our hole, letting the beast move along in short bursts (it must be rusty, metallic, torn, scorched).

commissioned and performed by the berlin-based ensemble zeitkratzer, the third piece provides a cathartic and tragic conclusion, achieving what could be called a sketch of chaos.

less-lethal, vol. 1
alku 63. various artists. 5" compact disc. 11 tracks. 16-page booklet. total program length 51:06

a compilation cd about sound-based nonlethal weaponry featuring tracks by carlos giffoni, dave phillips, francisco lópez, gæoudjiparl van den dobbelsteen, justice yeldham, lasse marhaug, mark fell, powerbooks for peace, torturing nurse, weasel walter and zbigniew karkowski.

keywords: less-lethal, nonlethal, torture, warfare, noise, crowd control, psychoacoustics.

less-lethal, vol. 1 is a sarcastic approach to the use of commercially available music in the military context (see waco, noriega, etc.) it includes a 16-page booklet with an essay by german researcher paul paulun about nonlethal force and its historical relationship with sound and music.

the foundations for this project were laid around 1999, with a long period of research into the equally blurry and fascinating fields of nonlethal weapons (also known as less-lethal weapons) and the behavioral sciences. over the course of this time, we found that one of the most interesting aspects of this phenomenon – full of mythology and speculation – was the use of commercially available music in the context of armed conflict, torture and crowd control. particularly the sheer lack of imagination on the part of military experts who resort to the use of pop music as a weapon, by playing it back for painfully long periods of time at very high volumes.

the direct relationship between sound and behavior has been documented outside the military over the centuries, from the musical treatment of mental patients in the ottoman empire to muzak's stimulus progression theory. with this in mind, it was the psyop’s complete lack of research which provided an excellent starting point for a challenging musical exercise. eleven artists were invited to contribute a sound piece that could be used as a weapon in an armed conflict.

the resulting tracks approach the subject matter in radically different ways. amplitude, duration and repetition may indeed constitute key elements of discomfort, but these tracks all go well beyond that. exploring dynamics and frequency range, structure, latent content, or various aspects from the realm of psychoacoustics, these pieces pose a stimulating (and less lethal) alternative to the average weaponized aor.
