july 2009 release ; originally slated for release in 1990 (but only ever reaching “test pressing” phase back then) this storied outing from jephhands tojerman is finally available, thanks to markpetri supplyschomburg’s newly invigorated incubator imprint, who seized the two-decade-old plates, pressed them each onto a single side of colored wax, and began forging each copy of this ... inarguably the most effort-orientedtangible music artifact” that’s crossed my desk in years ...

left & below you can see detail of but a fraction of the elements at work here ; yes, the lps have music on one side (gorgeous, glossed-out plunderphonic pieces, each referencing a particular artist - clues are in the song-titles) and heavily detailed screen-printing on the “dead wax” side - these are housed (along with copious inserts and even a “disclaimer”) inside a “no two copies are alike” assortment of hand-built gatefold sleeves, each with a dizzying array of applique (some have bottle caps, little pieces of “puffy paint”, assorted detritus) ... in a word, the whole package is entirely outrageous ...

the object alone is a source of much wonder ; coupled with jeph’s expert-level treatments, we have a real monster of a record ... frankly, at $18.48 this thing is a steal (esp. considering how many billable man-hours went into each copy’s existence) ; highly recommended !!!

hands to "flatline" lp on 2 one-sided screen printed color vinyl 12"s. in totally hand-fabricated recycled paper sleeves with full color art. this is ambient rhythmic noise by jeph jerman decomposing his favorite musics, and at his best.

back around the time hands to first started churning out lps from colorado springs in the early 1990s, petri supply offered publication of a record to hands tojeph jerman very quickly delivered a master tape of a project recorded specifically for petri, a concept record. along a similar line to reprocessed antique records which had been used on yeast culture’s first single, jeph jerman expanded much further on the idea by creating a series of distinct tracks, each of which are based on old recordings of a different mystery artist.

the resulting drone pieces and sound collages are decomposed musics, or flatlined sounds, where jerman has used production techniques to render new ambient effects from older recognizable sources. there's a clue for each track - the titles are new words made from artist name cut-ups, similar to the types of track titles familiar on other hands to releases. a listener might possibly guess the name or the sound correctly, though these truly are completely new works despite the recycled nature of the sound sources, so it's no easy guesswork. this lp is an example of the history of music feeding back on itself, music swallowing it's own tail, or might be compared to a rotted log being reclaimed into the ground. it's not that harsh of a record, sounding more continuously tranquil, even if made from very rough components.

the packaging was hand assembled from assorted old papers (1960s to 1980s) taped and glued together and screen printed with abstract images relating to the sound sources, and various other oddities that popped out of petri supply archive files. each copy has slight variations, no two being the same, with various labels and cover builds throughout the limited 250 edition. the back of each 1-sided record is also highly printed with images, including lauren swain's radial mandala art, georg odijk’s found art and yeast culture's own cut up visuals. it's so extensively printed that some copies of side b encountered a bit on ink which add to the sound - a petri supply tradition - a tactile and tangible deviation from factory made records.

petri supply press release...

a reissue of the midas music tapes compilation of dutch and international noise "enkele gemotiveerde produktiemedewerkers" on c100 tape make available again some rare tracks in a new deluxe edition.

by 1990, the underground cassette network in the netherlands was well established. in cities such as asten, nijmegen, 's-hertogenbosch, utrecht, tilburg, amsterdam, wormeveer, and zoetermeer the noise tape had already been an essential listening experience since the early 80's.

midas tapes had compiled a great series of tapes called harsh ears now, followed by the zondig lp, and then the long, 100 minute enkele gemotiveerde produktiemedewerkers compilation.  packed with high energy tracks, e.g.p. features screeching live sessions of post destruction music and dva met dva nichts, alongside solo work by winter (aka peter duimelinks of v2 org.), guido doesborg (dwarf farm), ios smolders, roel meelkop (mailcop) and thu20 a collective featuring many of these same people. kapotte muziek and mission papua holland contribute tracks as well.

the international network has been the lifeblood for dutch labels to exist and profit through partnership distributions throughout europe, japan, and north america. at that time artists on different continents already had achieved a comfortable connectedness through postal exchanges. every act on e.g.p. participated in the global art network, and earned the humorous e.g.p acronym, which translates to independently-motivated-production workers (a desirable work trait!). achim wollscheid and lieutenant caramel have supplied interesting sound collages from germany and france.  merzbow and (kk) null perform some high quality japanoise. from north america, smersh, emil beaulieau, gregory whitehead, hands to, arcane device, and yeast culture also serve up an assortment of american style sound processing.

as a payback and thank you to those involved in this tape, incubator has republished this tape in an american edition in 2009.  included are brief track notes in a fold open screen printed 5 x 8" cassette sleeve. limited to 240.
