... thanks for everyone's patience during the move !!! while it did take about a week longer than scheduled to get even the most basic elements of mms up & running again (i.e. records back on the shelves [in order !!!] ; packing & shipping bench upright & operational) we can safely say that things are finally getting back to normal around here ...

... we're just about caught up with invoicing & shipping orders placed during our closure & we've started opening up the dozens of boxes of new titles that arrived in our absence, updating the site here to show all of the new arrival & restock activities over the past few weeks (scanner & stereo are still boxed up, so full workups are still pending) ...

... as a token of appreciation to everyone that helped us out by placing a "closeout" order in the days leading up to the move (and due to a number of requests for more time to properly investigate / strategize a more thorough sweep of the dwindling list of titles on offer) i've extended the exhaustive "closeoupacolypse" one final time until the end of the spring ; this should afford everyone the proper resources to make their final selections ...

joe grimmbrain cloud” compact disc

  • brain cloud iv (10:50)
  • harpsichord (6:43)
  • brain cloud i (19:30)
  • harpsichord (5:09)
  • brain cloud iii (15:17)
may 2008 release ; a simply fantastic set of ensemble / piano / harpsichord drone pieces spearheaded by providence-area composer joe grimm (aka “the wind-up bird”) utilizing a variant of rhys chatham’s “choiring” to yield a heady array of overtone-magic ... performers on the two “brain cloud” takes include geoff mullen, scott “work/death” reber, luke “lucky dragons” fischbeck, and black forest/black sea’s jeffrey alexander and miriam goldberg.

one of the best discs i’ve heard this year ; highly recommended, esp. if charlemagne palestine’s whole “strumming music” ethos strikes a nerve/chord ...
spekk press release...

kk015 brain cloud joe grimm

the seed for this music was planted when i participated in one of glenn branca's 100-guitar symphonies. the sound was incredible: a deafening, electric choir incorporating so many voices that the each element was subsumed within the group sound.

but i was struck even more by the unrealized potential in branca's approach; the sound was separated into several identifiable voices, so that the impression given was of a conventional counterpoint-driven music. i wanted to make a particulate music that presented itself as a single mass of varying density, comprised of tens of thousands of individual events.

soon afterward, i began to immerse myself in the piano music of charlemagne palestine. i learned from him that when two notes share a particular frequency in their overtone series, that frequency can be made to sing out clearly -- a ghost tone, not played directly, but arising from the interactions among the directly played notes. i began to compose and improvise with this in mind -- i could sketch out desired pitches, and then arrange webs of lower pitches that coincided to produce those target pitches within their harmonic series.

this music deals with overtones. i listen not so much to the direct-played notes; instead, i let my mind wander through the web of throbbing harmonics that arise as a result of their interaction. there are obvious sounds on the surface of the music, but eventually my ears penetrate beneath the surface to where harmonics overlap in countless reinforcements and cancellations. i love the glowing acoustic haze that seems to hover above the obvious notes, and the sustained ghost tones that emerge and recede within that cloudy texture.

the brain cloud pieces are through-composed according to the principles of overtone confluence and particle density. there are no special electronics on these recordings -- the humming sounds are the result of the acoustical interaction of voices, violins, horns, and above all, piano (brain cloud iii was recorded live with three pianos, each played by three people; 18-handed piano). the harpsichord interludes are solo improvisations for harpsichord, equalizer, and slight delay.

nocturnal urban acoustic ecology. returning to the threads of past radio work and a cdr from 2004, ordinary machinery is an attempted transcription of listening and environments (internal/external). after they've waved goodbye and driven away. waiting for the connection. walking cross lots. when did things stop? where did this headache come from?

work/deathphone about to ring” long playing record

  • norabu watanabe between windows

  • changes change nothing naturally
july 2013 release ; ... an extremely inspired move, putting this, arguably one of scøttwork/deathreber’s best tapes (orig. issued last september on his three songs of lenin / tsol imprint) on boutique vinyl (as opposed to the double-digit, albeit meticulously self silk-screened cassette) for a wider audience (kudos to type’s john twells for the upgrade) ... here’s the gush re: the tsol tape ::

... few contemporary artists orbiting the system(s) we tend to document here at mms are met with as much universal praise & respect as scøttwork/deathreber, the providence-based composer, designer, and issuer of increasingly individualized take(s) on lucier-lineage room-specific process music(s) & assorted ferrari-style documentationing(s) of utter, crippling banalities in bafflingly labor-intensive, self-actualized print & sound-formations ...

... this & the “interstitialcompanion-tape graft a timeless beauty & a real, palpable sense of human emotional heft onto an otherwise greyed-out palette of gain-staged electronic scatter & wheeze, directly confronting his own, and ultimately the listener’s ill-ease at making difficult life-choices where there is no easy way out ... scøtt’s music gives us all strength & it’s for this we repeatedly turn to him, and will continue to do so as long as he remains dedicated to such elaborate & effective means of idea & catharsis-dissemination ...

... on vinyl the stacked-up layers shine through with an improved-upon clarity that far better suits the music ... highly recommended !!!

work/death
phone about to ring

work/death might be a new name to most, but for anyone listening to noise that is lucky enough to be based in and around rhode island, then scott reber's grizzled drones are likely a well-known staple. reber is something of the noise musician's noise musician, and his deeply knowledgable and surprisingly technical take on the sound has left those able to source one of his rare tapes or manage to catch a show slack-jawed.

one such tape is phone about to ring, which emerged from the ether on reber's own three songs of lenin imprint in 2012 with little fanfare. now type is proud to announce that it is being given the deluxe treatment, and has been remastered by reber himself before being cut to vinyl for the first time. the music itself is hard to get a grip on -- two effortlessly gloomy passages of sludgy, ominous noise, which in the wrong hands could end up falling into usual traps, but with reber at the helm sound both fresh and deeply complex.

instruments are bashed into near obscurity by reber's steady-handed layers of tape-hiss and crunch, and thick, doomy bass echoes like an earthquake in the background. the most startling aspect of phone about to ring is reber's ability to inject harmony into his stark, low-end rumbles and piercing cacophony. comparable to tim hecker or even thomas köner at times, reber makes noise that has a lot more beneath the surface that you might initially realize, and phone about to ring is his most concise and involving statement to date.

cut at dubplates & mastering, berlin.

first release (...after a 7” single and a cassette) on geoff mullen’s rare youth label - a double-disc compendium of contemporary goings-on in the providence, ri area, as compiled, lovingly, by geoff himself.

unlike many other providence “scene” compilations that feature, say, artists now signed to load; or artists that are friends with dom “prurient” fernow, this offers a pretty damn subterranean overview of what’s bubbling just underneath the surface of providence’s musical collective consciousness...
rare youth press release...
v/a : rare youth – new music from providence, ri

2cd compilation

here it is…a year in the making…a collection of new music from one of the most fertile and constantly changing locales in the union. featuring over two hours of music and spread out over thirty-eight tracks, rare youth brings together some of the most exciting artists at work in providence right now: work/death, kites, black pus, xerxes, heart2heart, russian tsarcasm, blue shift, lazy magnet, byron house, teenage waistband, black forest/black sea, unicorn hard-on, synb, leif goldberg, siege engine, lucky dragons and many many more.

sequenced to highlight the great diversity of musical stylings in this small town, this cd takes you on a smooth ride down the many colorful roads of: power pop psych noise, abandoned dronescapes, reckless free improvisation, emo power electronics, late night elven dance music, epic psych rock, shredded throat guitar doom, john carpenter-esque synth despair, witty no-fi punkish noise, genuine teenage love songs, total garbage, marching bands, etc. etc.

with the attention that providence has received for being a hub of louder-than-life, experimental music / art, this compilation tries to provide an updated snapshot of the current subterranean goings-on. it includes many of the artists who are responsible for bringing such acclaim and attention to this small community - brian chippendale (lightning bolt, black pus), mat brinkman, leif goldberg, jo dery, christopher forgues - while also highlighting some of the new and young artists who are taking things in different and exciting directions - russian tsarcasm, alberich, heart2heart, blue shift, summer city, byron house. there are also a handful of tracks featuring visiting artists (pedestrian deposit, brian miller and kevin shields…).

hand-packaged in a double-cd gatefold sleeve, with original illustrations and design by christopher forgues - aka cf, kites, paper radio, low tide, fantasy empire, etc. (his work can also be seen in comics anthologies kramer’s ergot, the ganzfeld, paper rodeo).

compiled and edited by geoff mullen.

edition of 1000 copies.
