chocolate monk press release...
the mongoloid menfrom the void (cd-r)

for one night only the mongoloid men (connelly, olson, young and nyoukis) came lurching into a brighton basement. cheap beer and indian food in their stomachs, beards and hair full of hash smoke. a swarm of metallic insects shitting debris into ears of those who attended. horrible, horrible noise.

smegma / wolf eyesthe beast” compact disc

  • (no tracklisting)
de stijl press release...
smegma / wolf eyes
the beast
this also came to be known as no face lives 036 lp / cd

smegma, man, fucking smegma. they started the whole damn thing. sure there was lee rocky & some soundeffects 78s that set the crew in motion but screw it.. you wouldn't be blasting "the beast" or any "weird handdrawn lp" with rotten ears if it wasn't for this truly motley crew.

in high school my sweet momma would give me ten bones a week for lunch, come monday by noon that shit was blown at the local rec shop. when i only had a couple of raggedy bux left from gripping zorlac stickers, the only option was the dollar bin at the store. it was there that john bender, haystacks balboa, nik reicnek, & peter catham lps blew open my teen mind to the netherworlds.

among the giants was this homemade wreckord by ju suk reet meat. looked amazing… had no idea. threw it on for nearly every day since. mutant loops, improv from alien swamp prom & deviant horrible ideas. changed my life. just what a young mind needed to replace the texas chainsaw massacre.

found out later it was from the smegma camp, a strange unknown mystery troupe from portland. no photos ever... just a numbling clip on a rrr comp video lessard gave me & dilloway, a tunnel view into the spirtual mecca that would the smegma klan.

before the first wolf jaunt out west we dropped them a postcard saying it would be good to meet. soon it mangled into a recording session. we would be so honored. the day came. the smegma house, totally pink, queued us in to rainy, green portland. we knocked. a femme voice said through the door, “use the bell”. nate pushed it and out came a gargled electronic siren. the door openend, rock 'n roll jackie, 5 foot tall, grinning & long beatiful grey hair. we all fell in love.

soon after we meet ju suk & one by one slowly met all the smegmas in one of the strangest nights ever. burned mind, meltzer, stan, amazon bambi, others. all weird as hell, checking us as much as us checking them. yep, this is who we wanted to be with the rest of our lives...

the michigan crew had never been so inspired & moved but by this unholy blending of mutant minds... so we jammed. it was fucking amazing. here are the results. every year we are going to see them & hang like the best friend weirdo family. a total pilgrimage. nate & i once got so blasted from portland cloud that we projected that smegma has always existed, ever since the beginning of time. someone will always carry it on... might be this dude in ypsi who has no face. really. no nose, barely a mouth, always has a broken arm or something.. smells like shit. dude is totally in smegma. fucking life rules.

esquilo (portugal) #es 002 cd
soopa (portugal) #soopa wolf cd

wolf eyessix arms and sucks |live in porto|” compact disc recordable

  • intro | 02:27
  • improv song | 29:32
  • 2 songs | 15:20
occasionally someone will write, offering a wolf eyes thing in an edition of 20 or whatever and i always bite and order like 75 because fuck that whole exclusionist / planned obsolescence / resultant ebay aftermarket thing; micro releases are only good & fair when they sate all possible / interested parties (i.e. people shouldn’t have to bend over backwards and resort to guerilla tactics to acquire the music and support the bands they love...)

...which makes what luis has done here quite remarkable: he did a wolf eyes thing in a small edition, then, when it sold out in like 2 hours, he re-pressed it. i know that doesn’t seem like such a vanguard move, but in this day & age it is ...and i’m glad because there aren’t many decent-fidelity board-recorded documents of w.e. shows that aren’t filtered through the gunk-bank/micro-cassette of the group. not to mention that there aren’t that many wolf eyes things that filter their sensibility, graphically speaking, through the mind of another; making the beautiful wood-cut-collage sleeve-art of mr. soopa that adorns the textured kraft-stock gatefold cd-sleeve so striking (esp. the three bearded warriors pictured in the gatefold...)

the first track’s got some great anti-uk olson/connelly comedy-banter before slipping into an excellent 30-minute minimal/rising improv of scraping metal and fizzing electronics that, in spots, is on par with the recorded output of such “classic” live-electronic spell-casters as david tudor, m.e.v., gruppo nuova consonanza, etc... not exactly the deep-vein throb we’ve come to expect from the connely/young/olson line-up. this gives way to the “medley” of wolf eyes “hits” (‘stabbed in the face’, etc...) that makes up the last 15-odd minutes...

considering all things this is a pretty damn unique entry into their discography-grimoire. i have a ton of copies, so no rush to get this into your stronghold/outbox... it’ll be around and available from mms to any & all takers for quite a while...
esquilo press release...
wolf eyes
six arms and sucks
|live in porto|

recorded live in porto this release shows a different side of wolf eyes. clearly uncomfortable for playing to a sitted audience, the band throws an unsetting 30 minutes long improvised track ranging from quiet moments – where scrapped metal, electronics and horns melt – to the most explosive harsh noise and guttural vocals.

but this was not the end. without warning, wolf eyes start a 2 songs medley. both well know for the wolf’s concert goers. minimal beats, distorted guitars, cracked-up electronics and noisy vocals fill the remaining 20 minutes.

this edition comes in a gatefold cardboard sleeve with silkscreened original art designed by soopa

limited to 200 copies.

faceneck (belgium) #fn 01 lp

wolf eyes / facenecksplit” ten inch single record

  • wolf eyes

  • faceneck
february 2010 release ; first release from jef cuypers’ “private” imprint, issued as tour merch for a couple of euro dates by the wolf crew & jef’s own faceneck duo ...

each get in a roughly 12-minute track ; i’ll be damned before i commit to figuring out whose side is whose (both sound pretty great actually ; one’s a blaster & the other’s quite subdued - listen to the sound-sample for the latter) ...
faceneck press release...

hey, my name is jef cuypers, and i am one half of the band faceneck. now, the reason i am writing you is the fact that we released a split 7" and 10" for a small  tour with nate and john of wolf eyes. both of the releases are on blue clear vinyl and come with stickers for every band that's on it. the 7" contains new tracks by spykes (john olson) / warning sign (nate young) / vomgrill (dennis tyfus (ultraeczema)) / faceneck (matthieu ronsse and me). the 10" is a split with wolf eyes (new 12 min awesome track). so, we have some left and we were wondering if you are interested in these? greets and thanks in advance!

fang bomb (sweden) #fb 0001 lp

wolf eyes / the skull defektsyes, i am your angel” long playing record

  • wolf eyes - "negative space" [14:17]
  • the skull defekts - "feedback between skulls while sitting in a room" [24:32]
last copies...

ah yes... this one’s a contender... a gorgeous milky-white split lp between current teen-titans wolf eyes (trio lineup of olson / connolly / young) and up-and-coming skandi-skorn unit skull defekts (here working as a duo of joachim “ideal / kid commando / alvars orkester” nordwall and henrik “traditional arrangements of feedback” rylander...)

wolf eyes side: mid-high oscillations encasing some fine, subtle sheet-metal/delay-pedal spazz-out... slowly the goat’s horns begin braying off in the distance before the bottom drops out and it’s all controlled feedback arc-gestures & the occasional click (are those... cd skips? on a record?) the word i would use to descrive the piece overall would have to be mellow - not one normally associated with w.e. but damn if it isn’t one of the most carefully considered bits in their discomnibus...

skull defekts side: an slown-down, almost dancehall “beat” opens the side with occassional harsh noise punctuations (in fact, if you play this at 45rpm you could probably mix it w/some bug riddims) - super minimal/repetitive & engrossing track, reminiscient of a noisier version of the first “various artists” 12” on fatcat. aside from the filtered feedback/noise, this really wouldn’t have been out of place on a mille plateaux lp ca. 1998. plus, i’m using conjecture to glom that the s.d. title is a loose lucier reference, and that’s never a bad signifier...

yes, it’s limited. yes, the wolf eyes side is good, especially if you’re feel the not-just-totally-full-on-harsh-noise phase they’re currently going through. yes the s.d. side is very good. yes, i have a good amount of copies; probably enough to last through the end of the summer (but these days; i’m getting less and less sure of my “predictive buying” abilities - 47 copies sold of the neon gallery marclay lp in one week anyone?)

fusetron (usa) #fuse 031 cd

wolf eyes / black dicewolf eyes & black dice” compact disc

  • (no tracklisting)
fusetron press release...
"the first young shorty that ever made my preteen heart sweat at night was brandy salem. so fine. the stage was set for some serious 8-year-old dating action but i got snaked by this lame dude named shawn murphy who won brandy's eye by shuffling baseball cards faster & being a little crazier on his four-wheel green machine. it killed me ... all summer i tried to get faster on the cards & upstage everyone on the street big wheel scene, but alas, no salem. she moved to iowa, still think of her when that "i'm in love with the sea" song comes on. fucking shawn....

fast forward 21 years ... in the game of pure electronic hard-core insanity, wolf eyes hear rumors of this ri band of pcp chair-throwing hc yahoos who hold the crown on violence & sonic terror. fuck that. we thought we were the end of the well in electronic napalm. this black dice band wanted to play in detroit ... no one will do it. fear of violence/death threats/general horror left them with no gig. "why would i wanna book a band who is gonna beat up my friends?" was the local consensus. so bd get a monday gig at club olson/my basement in quiet ferndale, home to a handful of whacked out electronic misfit gigs. neighbors of the crib being left side= young couple / right side = quiet lesbian couple with child. my cell rings nonstop days before the gig with crazed young hc fiends asking if the gig is true. i start to get nervous, then i hear they need like 30,000 watts for their gig. what the?

gig day/come home from my office job & the dice dudes are waiting for me. these are the horrible terror junkies who stab people when they play? all i see is smiles, loafers, bjorn playing with a kid, and starry-eyed-vacant-brain danny. weird. then they load in; mounds of amplifiers, mounds. the whole basement looking like iron maiden was gonna play. wolf eyes jams, we think it is intense, whatever. then they play ... starting with solo recorder and then / whoa /the most violent, insane, hiroshima tidal roar of basement sonic terror ever. ever. we never heard or witnessed anything so massive. we have seen the merzbows, the skin crimes, the gravitars, youth in asia, whatever.. this was in a totally different sound universe where the air is filled with concrete. it was louder in the street than it was in the basement black hole of sound. imagine black dice playing in your fucking basement on a monday night! jesus. no neighbor complaints. changed our view on sound/terror/attack. this was our challenge; meet this dice volume unholiness on the same sonic field before shawn murphy & his outlaw band does it better. dudes were so cool two of them even slept in the basement. awesome. so we became best friends. nate called me at work the next morning & said "we are gonna do a record together" i laughed ... that would rule...

so fast forward another two years. here is it is. recorded at a subterranean chinatown studio in two days. tons of jacked eq, no space, cases of brew, clouds of smoke, guinness record for most times "dude" was said. we met on equal ground here. total respect/the record really sounds like the shadow of each band. it was a blast. play it on 16 rpm in a closet and jam along with the bones of an enemy. me, it would be playing the remains of that rat fucker shawn murphy, dude couldn't shake shit at this horrible eerie black pond sound." - john olson, wolf eyes, october 2003.

wolf eyesalways wrong” long playing record

  • pretending alive (5:07)

  • we all hate you (4:54)
  • always wrong (2:29)

august 2009 release ; vinyl version ...

in many ways this is a return to form for the contemporary young / olson / connelly line-up of wolf eyes, with the band replacing the errant, hazily improvised electronics of the last dozen-odd interim releases with a frankly quite powerful focus on live drumming, almost intelligible vocals, and a cleanly & accurately captured cracked-electronic spew that rivals even the band’s breakthrough disc “burned mind” in it’s erosive qualities ...

this stuff absolutely screams on vinyl ; highly recommended, even if you’ve all but signed off on the band ...
hospital productions press release...

wolf eyes always wrong — lp

always wrong is a mantra of severity. wolf eyes has been scouring audiences across the globe with their acid drenched industrial noise and dub terror psychedelia, establishing themselves as the trailblazers of a genre and pioneers of the long-form noise tour. coming forth from the piles of tape loops and effects the bulk of tables reeling with electronics have been shed. this clarity never sacrifices intensity as paradoxically this is the most organic of the full lengths but also the harshest and most dissonant.

opening track “cellar” immediately sets the pace of barraged edits and percussive electronics as startling vocals spit from the dry throat and remain unfiltered for the first time breathing a clear litany of scorn. a new voice is rising and it isn't happy. throughout the album non-electronic beats created from live drums replace programming while colliding tape loops and junk metal bring new unstable rhythm like a house with erroding foundation. “living stone” shows a more natural state of acoustic composition highlighting the despondent subtle plucking of controlled guitar improvisation that could come from natures ghost. forging ahead in “we all hate you” loud tonal horns and architectuarly placed electronics. however their aesthetic core of pummeling hasn't been abandoned as the aggressive “broken order” takes hold with shrill feedback fueling industrial cannon blasts of white hot noise that burn the body from the neck down. an eerie harmonica driven death march straight out of "once upon a time in the west" cries on the closing track 'droll/cut the dog

immediately it is clear that wolf eyes have crafted a statement with maturity that stands at the top of their mysterious discography. always wrong is a denial against conformity and the triumph of walking a path alone. young, olson, connelly

wolf eyes / sicknessthere is a part of me that you will never know” long playing record

  • a diet of speed and beer (13:53)

march 2008 release ; a remarkably clean-sounding electro-acoustic construct by chris “sickness” goudreau, utilizing sounds from the contemporary wolf eyes trio - done in full collaboration w/the band ...

i’ve been on the fence about sickness in the past, but here he does a fantastic job turning wolf eyescreaking morass into a fairly event-heavy suite, rife with both the kind of jump-cut pedal noise you’d associate him with & decidedly more “composerly” moves ... great stuff !!!

wolf eyes / sicknessthere is a part of me that you will never know — lp

hospital productions is proud to release the first ever collaboration between these two legends, wolf eyes and sickness. this is not haphazard but a symbiotic collaboration bridging distant roads. this full length lp is a dark casket of scorched earth sounds, the remains of the cracks at the after shock of discovery. reminding us of the peaks in either artists catalog there is a part of me that you will never know processes the deepest sounds of these four masters in a haze of lone atmosphere and true noise.

this is not not a terror shock, this is the end.

heavily psychedelic. minimal. slow mindbending stuff... highly recommended, a future classic!

since wolf eyes formation during the end of the 90s up until today, their musical output has grown into an impressive oeuvre and gained them successes granted only a few bands. their style places them somewhere in the border area between experimental music, freeform, noise and harsh industrial. "black wing over the sand" is one long session (on vinyl divided on side a and b) that from the very first beginning lays bare the roots of wolf eyes: here is an evident presence of the industrial music of the early 1980s with bands such as throbbing gristle, maurizio bianchi (mb) and gary mundy’s cassette label broken flag.

instead of the harsh dissonances and compact walls of noise wolf eyes are well known for, the wholly instrumental piece moves slowly forward over a basis of silence. in that way black wing over the sand belongs to one of the band’s more accessible pieces of music, and is an excellent introduction to the dark cosmos of wolf eyes. with oscillating movements, wolf eyes conjure up short bursts of noise with screaming high pitched tones where a rhythmic deep and slow bass soon sets in, disappears, returns, increases pace, disappears and returns again. electric guitar, echo effects and sweeping sounds creates powerfully nerved effects over the slow rhythm.

black wing over the sand is yet another proof of how wolf eyes, simultaneously looking backwards and distinctly lets themselves be influenced by the hidden musical undercurrents that lies most close to their heart, with little means and creative craftsmanship succeeds in creating something altogether new, exciting and always unexpected.

black wing over the sand, now released on vinyl (limited to 900 copies) and shortly on cd, is a co- release from kning disk and ideal recordings. the album cover and inner sleeves features art illustration by andreas nilsson, fredrik söderberg och alivia zivich.

mike’s issued a steady stream of excellent cassettes (largely via his own gods of tundra label) over the past five years, but it wasn’t until he foisted a few copies of the “a cruel picture3-disc box upon us back in 2008 that it really clicked for me :: this wasn’t a set of grimy, sewer-escaping sludge but in fact a rather subtle set of chiming minimalism, forged with the same nuance (albeit rendered in far crispier fidelities) as travellers like yoshi wada & charlemagne palestine ...

lo & behold, this disc continues on where “cruel” left off ; offering an uninterrupted chunk of minimal crackle, hissy vocal filigree, ring-modulated guitar klang, and tape-mangled bells, all ebbing & flowing throughout like characters in an altman movie, culminating in one hell of a rising organ drone ...

i, too (much like steve, dom, and ... henry ... below) hear this as the crown jewel in mike’s extensive discography ... highly recommended !!!

ps. i’ve put up an extra-long sound-sample of the piece/disc’s triumphant final section as it’s a gorgeous slow-burner whose subtleties would be lost on a regular 2-minute job ... enjoy !!!
intransitive press release...

int036 failing lights cd

mike connelly's failing lights cd is a deep trip into darkness, density and dimension. this work is not random noise. connelly is able to bend sound and texture at will, with a great deal of control. he sculpts huge amounts of space and intensity with a great deal of grip. really good!

- henry rollins

...

with the first full-length cd of failing lights, mike connelly melds his diverse and obscure personal musical interests into one inspirational album. patience. minimalism. refinement. restraint. filthy dirty home recording, executed with the cutting skill of a sound-art composer and the heart of folk music. an amazing album, by far his best!

- dominick fernow, prurient

...

never before has the solo force of mike connelly been so clearly on display. failing lights is a dark necessity, an important document from one of underground music's most important figures.

- steve lowenthal

...

an evocative work of bleak electronic atmosphere and suffocating dread, failing lights is the intensely personal vision of michigan (via lexington, ky) artist mike connelly. while he has toured the world as 1/3 of legendary industrial/noise units hair police and wolf eyes, connelly spends his days crafting a much different sound on his own. under the failing lights flag, he has selfpublished a nearly uncountable number of cassettes and cdrs of rough drones, detuned improvised grit and unstable acoustics in tiny editions that quickly vanish into collector-land. intransitive is proud to present the definingand first widely availablefailing lights statement, an album of sinewy horror with a fine-tuned beauty within its darkness.

a single piece in five sections, failing lights begins with disquietingly barren negative space. as the album creeps forward, it steadily dispenses sheets of diffuse throat-scratch and skittering strings, culminating in a blast of molten organ. not noise, ambient, improv, black metal, or anything else: this is failing lights .

available august, 2010. edition of 1000, in shrink-wrapped jewel case featuring full color artwork by the artist.

wolf eyes
human animal

after a year of non-stop touring in support of 2004’s burned mind, wolf eyes were ready; seasoned to travel through horrible new areas of sound. during one four-week period at the dawn of ‘06, they laid down the ideas that would shape the new album in their studio, the terror tank.

this new slab is the first with mike connelly (of hair police and the gods of tundra label) replacing aaron dilloway. though he no longer tours with the band, dilloway remains involved and helped to mix the new record with bmg (who also did the deed on burned mind).

these songs are rotten with metal, reeds, consciousness-erasing islands of black doom; bass-heavy rippers, late-night free-terror jams, afflicted dog-hearts, underwater crabs: pure mayhem. the new double bass attack is showcased on “human animal” and “rusted mange” with scraping strings and a full terror-shriek workout re-organized by dilloway. new directions are countered by “rationed rot,” which revisits the eerie throbbing gristle-esque vocal deployment that dates from wolf eyesdread lp. the album also features the band’s first ever cover song: a dead-on rendering of no fucker’s rotten hxc anthem, “noise not music,” which closed out a lot of shows on wolf eyes’ recent european tour.

as ever, wolf eyes will be living on the road, with australian and american tours in the works, and more on the horizon.

wolf eyes
burned mind

ann arbor, mi’s wolf eyes are at the forefront of a quickly expanding american noise scene. the trio of nate young, aaron dilloway and john olson are the epitome of the self-sufficient musical entity. olson and dilloway have their own labels (american tapes and hanson records respectively) that have been releasing cassettes, cdrs, 7”s, lps and just about every other format, often in painfully limited editions, of wolf eyes material since young first used the moniker in 1997.

their existence as a trio dates to 2000. and they’ve since released albums on bulb (dread, 2001) and troubleman unlimited (dead hills, 2002).

the music that wolf eyes creates is truly terrifying; the soundtrack to street fight that erupts into outright incineration. sonic touchstones include throbbing gristle, early cabaret voltaire, black flag, whitehouse, pre-asheton destroy all monsters, negative approach, swans and early sonic youth. the advocacy of the latter has led to many opening slots and a spot on the entire 2004 lollapalooza tour.

birth refusal / cassis cornuta one sided colab lp

during the last euro tour of wolf eyes, john olson (american tapes) and mike connelly (gods of tundra) decided it was enough! they screamed “i’m not going to bed!!! i never wanna sleep again!!!”,

they missed their flights and stayed in antwerp with the ultra audiobored horror crew for 7 more weeks without food and drinks, just dry weed and cancerbags to suck on! after that intense test to see if they could adapt to the antwerp life style, they finally met up with legendary belgian eccentric cacti and hat collector cassis cornuta, this psychadelic caracter brought his whole space synth and tape lab over to radio centraal to record and intense last gasp jam with the hardly breathing olson and connelly, the end result is an amazing trip to space and back to the mental hospital!

comes in a gross 6 panel cover design and with an etch on the b side!

wabana press release...
wolf eyesfuck pete larsen
cd wabana ore40

as a follow up to their second cd, dread, on bulb records, ann arbor's cassette culture noise therapists hit back hard with an unofficial lp release on bad glue records. even though the band won't take credit for the album's pointed title, wolf eyes later agreed that it was very fitting. the lp was limited to 600 copies and sold out immediately in the summer of 2002. this is a cd version of that lp which is part of wabana's "re-issue the lp" campaign.

wolf eyes utilize old school analog electronic equipment to lay the basic tones of their music, which is then highlighted and ripped apart by electric guitar, horns, homemade noise contraptions and intense vocals. for those unfamiliar with wolf eyes, comparisons are often drawn to throbbing gristle or whitehouse. since the original lp of 2002, wolf eyes have recorded material for hanson records, troubleman, as well as turbo limited cd-r's and lp's on a plethora of small underground labels. this summer will see a brand new full length album on sub pop.

naturally there are a multitude of tracks from current / former wolf eyes members & acolytes, but i ended up being the most impressed with the efforts from redrot (odd, sliding electric bass & almost aphex-twin lineage feedback-squeal beats), evenings (harsh, zap-heavy electronics), cotton museum (woozy electro-acoustic improv), and mammal (ditto on the drum-machine tip) ...

quite reasonably priced, with the 6 lps in plain white sleeves slid inside a silk-screened / decapitated bags unlimited lp mailer coated in an assortment of visages of state-dwellers / originators offering hours of party-fun for all within eyeshot ... highly recommended !!!
